Idk Karate pairs better with boxing Imo. Boxing is a mobile style. It's easy to create a hybrid without contradicting ether styles fundamentals much. Muay Thai is very much it's own complete system, with its own strategies. The upright more squared stance takes power out of the back hand and spreads it across both hands more equally. This is fine but coupled with the lack of mobility it hurts your punching power and defence against punches.

I have trained kyokushin for 10 years took me 8 years to get my shodan (black belt) and while also entering kickboxing fights and doing kickboxing classes on the side but my main base has always been kyokushin, that’s what got me started. I will say kyokushin has its place for sure it’s legit the training is hard and the strikes are effective, but the style lacks head punch’s and head movement which is where you will be attacked in a real fight or street fight, also it lacks hands, we are trained to hit hard and punch threw the target where as with hands you need your hands to be quick and make them flow which they don’t , we punch stiff and hard and it’s noticeable

This is good against the Shotokan/sport karate stylist. For Kyokushin guys, you'd have to re-think. They don't fight in a bladed stance, but with square hips, they don't use side kicks much and they have incredible conditioning. They constantly train for being able to absorb absurd tons of damage and just walk through it so breaking them down like you would be able to do against a sport karateka will be very difficult. Their main weakness is certainly the lack of effective head movement since their competition format doesn't allow punches to the head so that's what I'd be going for. They also get separated in the clinch so they won't be liking finding themselves in one.

one thing that always confused me about kyokushin is the constant forward pressure, like they lean into each other with the techniques. That feels like it would make knees and sweep easy to setup, but I can't say for sure. Kyokushi fighters are weird.

@@Rotscrek The constant forward pressure is the mentality they're taught, bonus that they don't have to worry about face punches. Knees are allowed in virtually all Kyokushin Organizations and there's an abundance of knockout reels of head and body knee knockouts. As for sweeps, it depends on the organisation of competition, Enshin and Ashihara highlight compilations are full of them

Fighting isn’t rock-paper-scissors, but there ARE tactics that work like that, and I think karate tactics do neutralize a lot of Muay Thai, and a lot of Muay Thai tactics do the same to karate. It’s not ALWAYS “the fighter, not the style,” because often it’s the right tactic at the right time.

There are some that are more comprehensive, the style that I take and teach includes full contact, even to the face (on a limited basis for safety), stand up grappling, and ground fighting (mostly escapes to get back to the feet)...I think it mostly depends on the knowledge of the instructor and what he/she is willing to teach.

I would love to see more theoretical comparative videos. I also as a full contact karate practitioner agree with your assessment of the two styles and add that the bare knuckle training of the hard styles of karate also changes the way you fight and defend, as does the wearing of gloves. Karate does need to evolve a bit in its training to plug its gaps (as do all martial arts really) and I have been watching karate combat from the beginning to see if it would lead in a positive direction. Technically you shouldn't have to practice kata to learn how to fight like Stephen Thompson. Also yes the kyokushin point karate divide is substantial as people point out, but I think on broad strokes the things kyokushin guys bring to the table that muay thai fighters will be unfamiliar with are unorthodox kicks like point karate or tae kwon do guys too.

As a karate practitioner, I really suggest honing in on boxing If you’re going to start Sparring Muay thai guys that’s the only thing that saved me when I first started Muay Thai. That and having unorthodox kicks and movement from the karate. I wasn’t really able to catch up until I started integrating Muay Thai basics as well but I do think all three of those things complement each other very well. solid boxing, unorthodox movement in attacks from karate and Solid fundamentals from Muay Thai.
Unfortunately, I think there is a cap on karate striking but I think it compliments MMA a little bit more then straight up Kickboxing or Muaythai competition.
I think having a wider stance helps you deal with takedowns a little bit better than a narrow Muaythai stance but the pinnacle of striking is definitely Muay Thai

Ashihara and many Kiokushin "spin offs" for example are quite respectable even facing Muay Thai. Point karate with no contact sparring on the other hand...
Training methods make a huge difference. I would say that's what makes Muay Thai so effective, although its arsenal also helps quite a bit.

I grew up practicing Karate - then started doing muay thai in my 30s. A guy in the class was explaining that one strategy was to kick the guy in the leg and chop you down. I remember thinking 'that is so dumb, i'll just do a downblock and then throw a straight punch' - i was in for a rude awakening. I came to love Muay Thai and it made me a much more confident fighter. Oh and yes, practicing getting punched in the face was so critical to that development. I wish i'd had Muay Thai as a kid.

I would argue that punching in Muay Thai is very regional. In western countries like the USA, there is a LOT more emphasis on the boxing part of Muay Thai and less on the clinch. I work as an official for a larger organization and this is what we see at tournaments and fight events. Also, with ONE and MAX there has been a big push for knockouts and keeping the action going, which is leading to more boxing in Muay Thai

sorry for long comment. TL;DR: kickboxing = full contact Combat sport version of karate. just like muay thai = combat sport version of muay boran. so a fairer comparison would be muay thai vs. kickboxing, whether dutch, japanese, or american, even if we're talking about kickboxers who haven't trained in traditional karate at all (so, more than just the karate representatives like rick roufus). similarly, few muay thai fighters have muay boran experience.
i have this crazy notion that karate is more equivalent to muay boran, not in terms of effectiveness or whatever but in terms of its role as a non- combat sport martial art. just as muay thai was an adaptation of muay boran as a combat sport, non-muay thai kickboxing is simply the adaptation of karate for combat sport. whether it's dutch style or japanese style (adaptations of kyokushin) or American (adaptation of shotokan and tkd for the most part). in terms of technique, but more importantly their historical origins.
point fighting is its own thing, mainly a compromise to have a competitive format more palatable for more conservative sensibilities, esp. in Japan, at the time. kyokushin lacking face punches was for similar reasons, but had an advantage when it involved more throws. but since those are off the table in most full contact striking sports, and also have been subtracted from competitive kyokushin since then, it had to be adapted into japanese and dutch kickboxing to compete effectively in full contact face punch formats.

Catching the side kick and dropping an elbow onto the ankle bone while holding it in place as you stretch it often has a good result but you you have to be practised at it ..The Thai side kick is safer as you twist from a teep into a side kick after you see it has landed and pull back fast to avoid the elbow drop..spinning techniques are dangerous because if the muay thai jams it he can stike the back..In Thailand an elbow was allowed to the back of the neck when I was active so the spinning hook kick defense was to step in and catch it then catch the forehead from behind and slam the other elbow into the back of his neck ..It was so dangerous there was a 30000 baht bonus for a spinning technique knockout back then in the 80s..

In my opinion... Karate and muay Thai can be combined. Using karate at the beginning of a fight and kickboxing from middle to End. I do both styles and find that in general, karate doesn't work for me past round 2. My karate style is Shotokan. Deep stances, springy, lots of explosion and power, and for me after round 2, the dynamics of it become too tiring. So I shorten my stance and go more kickboxing with a focus on defensive string at closer range.

Only problem with this is that, you show footage of Andy Hug, a kyokushin fighter.... Who didn't do those snappy side kicks, preferring big low kicks and even spinning heel kicks to the thigh. A style that's full of leg chopping, a style that has insane conditioning and durability challenges.... If you want KYOKUSHIN karate vs muay thai, look at Akimoto's fights in ONE. WHich whilst being under kickboxing rules, are closer to MT's rules than sport karate. Gabriel, just google Kyokushin conditioning on youtube and you'll see hardened bodies that rival some of the great Thaiboxers. Lots of Kyokushin fighters are more than capable of checking kicks and firing back with powerful body shots, or returning with their own kicks. Dissappointing video, thought you had some understanding of Kyokushin since you've got Andy Hug in this video but I guess I was mistaken.

Gabriel you forgot to mention that there are some karate practitioners who also mix boxing with the way they fight. Some of the best kickboxers in the world such as Hirotaka Asahisa and Jonathan Di Bella mix boxing + karate. Also karate has evolved since the days of Rick Roufus. A lot of karate practitioners now know how to check leg kicks, they also learn other martial arts some even practicing Muay Thai. There are many ways to avoid leg kicks, Savate fighters are excellent at this, and they usually beat Thai boxers in kickboxing rules.
Another karate practitioner who was successful against Muay Thai fighters was Pete "Sugarfoot" Cunningham. Check out Cunningham's second fight against Sagat Petchyindee. He showed how to beat Thai boxers.
