      There are a few pre-sociopathic folks who just don't get nervous. My coach was concerned that I wasn't nervous before competing 3 times. I fully understood that myself and another human were going to try to kill each other for sport and I was cool with that.

    1) Blinking while shots are coming at you
    2) Power in your hits
    3) You have to want it
    4) Unable to maintain composure while sparring bigger opponents
    5) Not being nervous. Not giving enough respect to what you are about to do. Butterfly’s help you on fight night.

    100% I was guilty of the last one for my first fight. When the doctor was reading our blood pressures, he assumed I was experienced because mine was so low. Everybody thought I was going to do great because of how calm I was. I got completely wrecked for the first two rounds. I went into it like it was a light spar, and the other kid came out like he was fighting for his life. Completely took me by surprise.

    • @natelacross3179
      @natelacross3179 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +47

      That’s exactly what happened to me and I ended up losing. I never fought again because I figured I just didn’t have “it” and assumed if I was really built for fighting it would’ve happened more organically (having the intensity and mindset to fight rather than going out so lax and calm). Only made worse by the fact my teammates and training partners were so shocked I hadn’t won easily because I always did so great in sparring. Made me feel like I was a “practice player” and wasn’t a “gamer”

    • @natelacross3179
      @natelacross3179 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kyleconnor2759 I trained my whole life and was always naturally really good at all the combat sports I did (wrestling, kickboxing, judo, etc). I was getting ready to go to college because I was just freshly an adult and wanted to finally see if I was really a fighter or not before I committed to my studies (under the assumption that there’s some innate thing that separates talented hobbyists from real fighters). I had always wanted to fight and wondered how I’d be when the time came so I figured then would be the chance to see if I was worth anything as a fighter. I went into my first actual kickboxing match in a ring in front of a crowd extremely calm (like I had always been when competing in wrestling, or obviously simply sparring in the gym) against a guy who went in their intense and ready to go after having been very calm and even friendly to me prior to the fight (which in my head made him a more “natural” fighter, although he was actually very experienced as I later came to find out). Anyways I lost and figured that although I may have been talented and knew a good deal about fighting, maybe I just wasn’t built like the guys you see on tv from a mental standpoint (maybe lacking killer instinct). I’ve been very busy ever since finishing my degree and studying to go to law school so I’ve never really given it another proper attempt.

    • @MaxPowers2.0
      @MaxPowers2.0 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Wow exact same thing happened with me. I remember being SUPER calm before my first fight which is weird for me because usually I freak out about first time EVERYTHINGS. But before the fight i was super calm, my technique was super crisp and i felt super ready. Don’t really remember really having ANY jitters.
      Well the fight happened and I did the walkout, and as soon as I got in the ring and the bell rang i was like “oh shit.” During and after the fight I FELT like I did way worse than I actually did. All things considered and in retrospect i didnt actually do that bad.
      The guy i fought had about 20+ fights and was a champ in some other kickboxing league and this was my FIRST fight (couldn’t even get any smokers in, because they kept getting canceled for “reasons”) But i lasted all 3 rounds, didnt get really hurt or even dropped and even dropped the guy in the second round with a nice over-hand right.
      I lost by UD but one of the judges gave me the second round. But overall all having all that anxiety rush in at the last second sapped all my strength away and just made me think i wasn’t cut out for fighting, never fought again after that.

    I think one thing we overlook as your viewers too is the fact that you videos are so beneficial to us as coaches too! As a Muay Thai/Kickboxing competitor I use the drills and concepts to help myself improve but I also use them to help coach my students better. Im expecting to have my first home grown student take his first fight in the spring and your videos have helped me correct technical errors in him as well as help the mental sides of things for him as well. Thanks again Gabriel

      I really like seeing comments such as yours.
      I am a big believer there is always someone out there that we can learn from and improve, no matter what our skill level.
      I have been training, competed, and still teach till today for more than 5 decades.
      When Gabriel and his brothers where younger I was their teacher. As they got older and kept improving, I realized I needed to look around to find someone better than me to take them to the next level.
      This is something I had to do a few times - always upgrading - always looking for the best coaches.
      I am pretty darn good at this martial arts stuff, and I am told a very good instructor - but you do not have to really look that hard to find someone better as there are so many skilled martial artists, fighters, trainers, coaches out there in the world.
      The goal in my life was to help our kids all be better than me, as I figured "If I was the top of the food chain in the Varga family - something had gone awry".
      It is great to hear from coaches such as yourself who are humble, always looking to learn and improve, and help their students the best they can.

    This is all absolutely true. My first fight I had absolutely no fear... And what happened? I got TKO'ed. My second fight, I was on the verge of throwing up in the warm up room and what happened? I flash KOed the guy within 20 seconds and won the grappling exchanges. Fear helps you think clearer and see everything coming at you. Thank you, Gabriel! Amazing advice as usual 👊

    Counterpoint: For me, I had my first fight before I nailed down that composure all the way, however, I not only won, but after the fight I had way more composure in sparring afterwards! I think having that first fight really gave me a whole other level of self respect that allowed me to assert myself in the ring and on the mat

    That last one about not being scared is so true. I once agreed to fight someone on the street - really stupid but young and dumb. I did wrestling and understood what full contact meant and I was scared; my friend even asked if I was okay because I was so quiet in my own world mentally preparing myself. The other guy was laughing and boasting with his friends as we walked to our chosen fight spot. I beat the tar out of the other guy while sustaining almost no damage. If you aren't nervous or scared to get into a fight, then you probably have no idea what you are doing and will get your butt kicked.

    • @NicoMound
      @NicoMound 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I think the words "nervous" and "scared" arent the good words to use. The thing is to be totally aware of the danger. And you can do that by staying calm, thats the flow state you need to enter in.
      You can still win a fight while being scared as you did, but that was not the ideal behavior. Some people would have froze in your situation.

    This video really put a lot in perspective for me. Two years ago I had planned to go compete. The reason was at the time I wanted to see how I match up to an opponent rather than a punching bag.
    Life took an unexpected turn and my wife and I were expecting my son at the time and other things took priority.
    Fast forward to today I feel that same urgency I had before I found out I was going to be a dad but now there’s a little more fear involved.
    Fear of hurting someone and definitely of maybe irreversibly damaging myself. This video helped me figure out that while my form is good and I’m in okay shape I still have a ways to go before I feel up for getting in that ring but I know I’ll get there.

    I love the last one. I had some of my BJJ kids compete back in October and I kept telling them it's okay to be nervous, that means you really want to do well and that you care about it. If you don't have any fear, or even worse you're cocky about it, you're going to get complacent and you're going to be your own downfall when you make a dumb mistake.

      I would always tell our students that everyone will be nervous - "the real game is working on being the least nervous, so you are able to function as best you can".
      Gabriel and I both agree that we think it takes around 10 ring fights to start being able to perform close to what we are able to do in the gym sparring.
      I have met many fighters who bite off way more than they can chew way to soon, and not realize actual ring experience counts for a lot. When Gabriel was 20 or 21 and we were looking at fight opponents I would ask him..... If your 26 year old self with 30 fights was to fight your 21 year old self who has 3-4 fights - who do you think would win????
      Congratulations on working with, and passing down important information to kids!
      I know that one of the most meaningful comments I have ever received as a teacher is when a long time student who started training with us when he was around 6, came to me in his young 20's after graduating from University with an Engineering Degree. He said "Sensei Keith, I would like to thank you".
      Thank me for what I asked?
      The things you taught me for all those years about perseverance, dedication and not quitting is what helped me get through Engineering at University when it was really tough".
      That was 10 years or so ago, and after 5 decades of teaching, it is still one of my fondest memories of being thanked for something as a Martial Arts teacher.

    I think this is good advice for self defense too, since blinking and looking away while being punched could mean getting knocked out in say a parking lot, which could get you killed, and thinking you could take anyone without fear/anxiety, could also get you killed. Though you don't necessarily have a crowd watching you outside a bar or whatever, the risks could be extreme, so not losing composure would be important.

    This one matters to me.
    I literally had micro panic attacks all through adulthood due to childhood trauma.
    If voices were raised I'd start shaking all through my insides.
    My best buddy guided me to a local gym here in Australia where a literal Lumpinee Champion (Neung sityodtong) was the coach. I was unemployed from stress.
    After training for a year four times a week i went from panic in someone elses presence to being able to light spar with a pro striker without fear.
    I finally asked if i could get a fight in the upcoming gym v gym comp. Neung said ok. So we really turned up the training. My shoulder and ankle were injured from my own overtraining and i had to drop out
    The point is that even if i never stepped into the ring, i realised that the fact i was willing to meant I'd done it.
    I was finally free from the panic.
    Absolutely amazing.

      I can totally relate because I also had a great fear of conflict and would also get those micro panic attacks if someone just raised their voce.
      10 months ago I started training MMA ( BJJ and Kickboxing) and I could actually feel my anxiety/ fear of conflict diminish by a considerable "amount" every month. Present day - I'm finally able to walk on the streets without fear and panic and I can finally enjoy walking outside. In a way MMA for me was even better than all the therapy I did in the last few years. It's great for anyone who has severe anxiety and panic 👍

    From a boxers point of view i 100% agree with everything said in this video. This video is a great checklist for even a boxer to go over when sparring to know if your ready to fight. Ive litterally had a coach once tell me if i want to take a smoker fight at a time i felt i wasnt ready and i was told "you either got it or you dont" at that time i always trained on bag and was a beginner at sparring , i felt i need to spar a lot more before i take a fight and at this gym we spar 1 time a week. I was not ready but i didnt want to look like a coward so i said yes. Willing to take a loss even as long as i dont look like a coward. And now i look back at that and i realize how foolish that was . I wish i had someone like this man as my coach or at least watching over me at that time to tell me "no your not ready" now im alot older and alot more experienced and i would be terrified for one of my sons if they had a coach like that. I learned alot from that coach, but i could have learned alot easier. Lol

    I would say from experience, the most important thing out of everything else is endurance. If your cardio isn't to the top, if your not pushing yourself to exhaustion to the ponit of vomiting, your not ready to win. No matter what's in your arsenal if you're to gassed to do it... trouble. Run 3 miles before you even work out. Train, spar, work out, then run another 3 miles. Then do wind sprints till you think your lungs will explode, throw up. That's how intense your endurance needs to be. Shout out to my wrestling coach Sgt. Mad Max Renner. You made champions. Thank you.

    Lack of power can also come from being used to holding back in sparring. I think I held back a little too much in the fight I had. It was especially tough because it was non-decison so I was getting mixed messages about how hard to actually go. My team mates were saying just go full-force and let the ref tell you if you need to dial it back, but then the ref was telling us all to keep it light and technical. Just make sure your electrolytes are sufficient and I utilize bone marrow broth to keep my hemoglobin level up so my energy doesnt bottom out from an adrenaline dump if I get hurt and my body goes into flight or fight mode. Our pops taught us this before we were teens because in the gym occasionally we'd see young boxers defecate themselves from a hard gut shot combined with nerves and the associated adrenaline dump when things got real intense.

    Define 'Fight.' With what I call a fight I agree with only two of your point, the first one and the last one. If a person still flinches and blinks at an incoming hit, he lacks experience, and is not ready. If he isn't afraid, then he lacks respect for himself and his opponent. He overestimates himself and underestimates his opponent. Hugely detrimental.
    Now, in a contest between athletes, there are rules, and you are generally using same or similar skillsets. But in a fight, there are no rules. It is literally survival of the smartest. Total Chaos ensues and you can never predict your opponent's actions, or even his reactions and available power at any given time.
    My credentials? before I turned 8 years old, I faced my own mortality 3 times. All of them were the actions of other people. In two of those incidents I had zero control, someone had to act on my behalf. These were all purposeful actions by people in my environment. It was never a ring, never scheduled, and all of those people did it because they wanted to and literally had no care about whether I lived or otherwise.
    So please, Define Fight. I have trained a bit of BJJ, it is a bit fun. But it wasn't serving any purpose for me and basically was wearing me out. I am almost 50. My other skills I have real experience, and real training. A good amount of it. It is just the English language, although my only language, doesn't lend itself to the nuances of various meanings of a single word. For instance, Love. The Greek language has five words for love, because of the different types of human love.
    Are you referring strictly to sport? And do you believe you can ever be ready for the real thing? There is a lot of variables involved when contemplating the reality of fighting for your life. It is literally a carnal experience, and like a wild animal you have to go 100% with any and all resources without any consideration of "What will it look like?" Nothing cool about it at all.
    It is just a slight pet peeve of mine when someone speaks about fighting and not actually being clear about what it means to actually 'fight.' And no, I don't mean any disrespect, I just want to understand. And I want to add, sometimes that fight for life does not involve any kind of physical contact with your opponent. I was able to get help to them to be rescued, but ultimately couldn't fully save them. I'm all that is left. So please sir, Define Fight.

    As far as being nervous goes…I was preparing to teach a medical student how to do a procedure and the patient was rather sick. After I explained how the procedure would be done she said, “I don’t know, I’m just really nervous.” I said what’s wrong with being nervous? It’s your body and brain talking to each other, preparing for a challenge. Another physician chimed in and agreed, saying if you aren’t a bit nervous, that means you must not fully grasp what’s at stake.
    I’m not a competitive fighter, just a hobbyist, but I imagine the same principle applies as you enter the ring.
