It always blew my mind that the documentary presented their "buddy system" as efficient and cute, when in reality, parentification is a form of abuse, and is toxic.

I disagree for many years of human existence that was a way of life, the narcissistic self absorbed way people live now and raise their children isn’t ideal either based on the drug addiction, and rampant mental health problems within society at large. I don’t think expecting children to help with their siblings is toxic behaviour in itself, although I will agree the way the Duggar’s did it was toxic, protecting a pedo and sacrificing their daughters,teaching backwards misinformation about women’s place in society and putting their children in public when they were too young to consent, are all horrific things the Duggar’s did, I think expecting older children to help with the younger ones was likely the least damaging thing they did in terms of bad parenting.
The more I learn about Anna, the more I feel sorry for her. The saddest part for me was hearing that she used to be an outspoken and assertive child. Her fundamentalist upbringing broke her spirit.

Imagine being an infertile woman born into a quiverful family. As someone who can’t have children I’ve dealt with a lot of pain because of it including comments from family and past romantic partners. I can’t imagine being in a family where your “value” is completely encompassed around childbearing.

I had fertility issues for 20 years. Myself and extended family are all Christians. I am so thankful that our worth isn't based on having a baby. My family just thought, " A baby will come if it is God's will and plan". My Husband's family, they aren't quiverfull, but they passed so much judgment on us not having kids. Like we were less than they were. Very hurtful. While I didn't go to a quiverfull church, many Christians are very judgmental if you don't have kids. They assume you are being selfish and not wanting children. We tried for years and years. We were surprised with a baby last year. I will never treat someone with infertility as my Husband's family treated us.....it is really disgusting. Not only were they nasty to us, but if someone had more than 2 or 3 kids, they talked nasty about them. Some " Christians " are just mean.
I really hate how the Duggars agreed to the courtship because Anna’s family believed that criminals could be redeemed, and they knew their own son was a criminal. They made sure to choose a wife and family that would look past what he did and believe he could be redeemed, despite the fact that he never received any help or punishment for what he did. It’s so sad to see.

It's honestly heartbreaking that the catalyst for her relationship with Jesus is one based not on love, but on fear. I feel like this is so telling & speaks volumes to how & why she entered her marriage to Josh & especially why she won't leave, it's all centered on fear. Living a life dictated by fear is incredibly detrimental to one's growth & happiness in the human experience. It robs you from living in the present & impedes any kind of personal evolution. Living this way might feel safe, but it's stagnant, never fully realized & just plain sad.
I like how this isn't really shaming Anna, but pointing out that she's just another victim of a cult. When you're told something since you were born, and that if you don't follow it you're going to suffer an awful faith both in life and death, you're going to do it. Anna is also a victim here.

There's definitely some grey in this situation because while she is an adult, she's also been abused and brainwashed since birth, so her brain must be beyond muddled. It reminded me of an old neighbor of mine who kept pressuring me to say the "salvation prayer," going so far as to warn me before a long road trip that I had better say the prayer before my voyage because if I'm in a wreck and die I'll go to hell. For her the only path to "salvation" was to say this magical prayer. I reassured her that I would be fine if I died since my "salvation prayer" happened in the form of my Confirmation in the Catholic Church.
Exactly! I had a friend who is a devout Christian and she told me she was "saved". I started asking her, were you promiscuous at one point? She said no. I said were you an addict? She said, no. I said, well why do you think you needed saved? (She was always a good, solid person, had challenges like anyone else but I was so confused by her) She just kept saying she was ""saved"". This was 15 years ago and I scratch my head over this all the time.
@@bgpainthrse I grew up in a really religious home, not as extreme as them but still pretty religious. My mom had and still has some kind of undiagnosed mental disorder. She has used religion as her identity, personality, etc. was really hard growing up and I hated going to church every Sunday. Even as young as 9 I would cuss out the people there in my head 😂. Well when I was 11, the preacher as he was talking, started walking up near the pew I was sitting in. He looked at me and said “would you come up here real quick”. Strangely I already had a feeling this was going to happen, before he ever said or insinuated anything. I didn’t want to go up there, especially not in front of anyone, it was embarrassing and I didn’t like church in the first place. But I walked up there, he said would you like to ask Jesus in your heart today? I said yeah. He had me repeat after him a short prayer, and as I was doing it I started feeling an overwhelming sense of lightness, like any negative emotion or feeling in me was replaced with pure joy. And as the prayer ended, he blew his breath towards me (felt like his breath was the Holy Spirit/God honestly) and in that moment the joy and peace became even more overwhelming and I lost my balance and fell back. Not completely but I took like two steps back before I caught myself. The next two days I remember feeling the joy and peace still lingering, the happiest I’ve ever felt. It slowly faded after a while but it’s something I’ll never forget. I’ve never felt any peace, happiness, lightness, Or joy like that again in my life. I’m 28 now with three kids, and while I believe in god, we don’t go to church and I don’t teach them about the Bible or god really. But mainly because of the crappy upbringing I had where everything with my parents involved religion. My relationship with god is small as I’m still trying to separate god from the religious stance my parents put in my head. Just thought I’d share what being saved could mean for someone.

The way these teen girls talk with wide eyes and an almost child like affect, Anna describing why she got baptised after the accident was like watching an 8 yr old tell a story. It seems to me that aside from parentifying these kids at a young age, they are still kept niave and immature.
That is an intentional affect that the women/girls are taught to employ. It isn't only found in this particular cult, it can be seen in other communities as well.

Watching her tell her testimony is so surreal to me. She was struggling with the same thoughts and questions as I was right before I left the church. I remember feeling like I had to pretend to be a Christian and feeling so confused by other people's immediate and easy connection to God. I was so jealous of the people that were able to have such blind faith. It's sad watching it from the other side after getting out and realizing that I was heading down the same path she ended up on. She was literally groomed and brainwashed for this life, and I wish she could wake up and see the other side.

I met my bio dad at 16 and got in deep in evangelical Christianity and it was heart breaking to constantly be told that our faith, or our prayers or our relationship with God wasn't good because I wasn't manifesting my prayers. Another thing that was drilled into me was how discouraged we were in the act of having self love (loving myself!) which was utterly damaging to me as I self harmed through addiction and other behaviors. I am now free of all that I still love God but i now realize how much religion is actually a cult. It is used to control people especially their pocket books and it does this through fear. So sad!
Yep me too. I would terry for so long and feel so defeated when I never spoke in tongues and thought it was a sin to question the beliefs of the church. Now that I’m agnostic life is so much easier for me. Nothing wrong with being a Christian either but have to be really careful to still allow freedom of thought which she sadly did not have

I've had friends heavy into Pentecostal church be SO MISERABLE, because their husbands don't care about them (they're just there to meet their s*x needs), they're expected to work and do all the house chores and take care of the kids themselves, and they get bad headaches because their hair is so long and they aren't allowed to cut it. Its just sad.
Good backstory for all members of the IBLP cult. Anna and Josh's story is pretty much the same for all young people who court and marry in that cult. The only reason Josh married Anna is that the Holt girl broke off their engagement after finding out what he had done. Jimbob wanted Josh to marry the Holt girl because their families were close and the Holts were wealthy had political connections as well. Anna Duggar was the second choice for Josh Duggar. She was the perfect substitute because her family was poor living in a trailer. And Josh knew Anna was a super fan and would put up with whatever he did. Anna and her family stalked the Duggars because of their fame and their power within the IBLP organization. She prayed for Josh to marry her. I guess you have to be careful what you pray for you might just get it. Josh never respected Anna because she came from the wrong side of the tracks. If he could have married a wealthy girl in their cult he would have.
Sounds like it was literally everyone deciding that Anna is perfect FOR Josh as if she’s an object, without Anna’s input in the matter at all. It’s sickening and heartbreaking to watch.
I’ve watched several documentaries on the Duggars. She was a fan of his family long before meeting them/him in person. She prayed that he would marry her even while he was courting the Holt’s daughter (she ran when she heard about the mol3s!ion). Imho that means she was coveting what someone else had. I do think her family’s belief in redemption played a huge part in them marrying. I also belief she overlooked red flags in hopes of fame.
What makes me sick is there are people in the IBLP that will wonder what Anna did to make him an ungodly man when the reality is Josh is escaping scrutiny of his motivations and actions. He is sentenced based on his actions and inactions only.
Very true! There is a book called “The Great Sex Rescue” (pub 2020). The author references all of these very popular Christian books about marriage and sex, specifically, and quotes the MANY times these authors blame men’s infidelity on women. Like, your husband cheats because you got fat after having a baby. Or your husband wouldn’t cheat if you’d be a more satisfying wife. 🤢 It seems Anna believes Josh is innocent, but even if she opens her eyes to his guilt, she will blame herself, like she caused it by being a bad wife.
@@sayhello5377 that's exactly why she believes he's innocent. If he'd guilty of doing horrible things, the horrible things she's done to "drive" him to it become real too. I can't imagine that kind of mental burden. I think it's something that has been overlooked by other creators who attack her. The cognitive dissonance that would happen if she allowed herself to understand his guilt is tremendous. I can see her now talking with him and he comes up with another person to blame, and Anna eats it up, "oh my gosh you're so right, he is the one who did this!"

As someone who grew up in a similar cult, you’ve explained this and researched this very well. Thank you also for making the statements in the beginning about different behaviors and avoiding generalizations. This allows for those considering leaving the cult become less defensive and open to listening to what you have to say. That being said, having grown up in this and having family in that exact cult, women have NO rights. I have a 29 year old female cousin who is not allowed to move out until her dad has chosen her husband and allowed her to leave. If she does move out on her own, her parents told her she can never return. The amount of child abuse is at least 3 out of 5, speaking from first hand experience. Victims are blamed and shamed. The more awareness we can bring to this, the better chances people will start getting out.

My seven year old talks like that. Goes to show how these kind of extreme practices really stunts someone’s development. I feel sorry on how her life turned out especially since she never had a say in it. Having never watched any episodes of the Duggars, this whole thing looks insane.

Yeah it made me so sad and uncomfortable. Seeing that old footage of Josh talking about what he was looking for in a partner was really disturbing. Knowing that all of that was filmed after his actions really irked me. And then the scene with the siblings lined up and seeing his sisters and knowing the girls were m*****ed by him already was so sad. They look so young and it’s heartbreaking knowing that their big brother hurt them and the parents didn’t really protect them…. They deserved so much better than that. I even feel bad for Anna. If she really didn’t know the extent of his previous behavior and her religion and upbringing prevents her leaving him; that must be a living hell.

I got several pieces of information from this video, but the craziest one to me is that Anna “officially” became Christian (“in her heart”) after she got in a car accident and determined that if she died in the accident, she would’ve gone to hell. Not “oh Jesus talked to me” or experienced some side of “sign” from God. She was literally scared to go to hell. What the actual fuck
Yeah, I'm catholic, and I can tell you. They take the words fear of God far to literally. To be godfearing means to be in awe of him. Not being afraid of going to hell for not being baptized. Like, I would be more moved by her conversion if the miracle was what converted her, as opposed to being scared into it by the car crash. But honestly there is so much wrong with this courtship. I'm sorry, but don't do anything just pray about it if you are attracted to someone, but in the mean time the parents are arranging the courtship is wrong on so many levels. Like, it makes it seem like prayer is what you do to make things happen. When biblically prayer is only part of it but it also requires action. NOT ON YOUR PARENTS!! BUT ON YOU. You’re video came up on my recommendation, and I’m so glad I found you! Hearing Anna talk about how she came to have her beliefs is really heartbreaking. “I wasn’t in the club…I felt left out”. I’ve watched other commentaries on the Duggers and IBIP, and with every video, I’m more and more convinced that these women and children are trapped in a cult.

I take issue with evangelicals who work very hard to "save souls" and convince them they'll burn in hell if their religion isn't straight. Wow, this is a really informative video! You did a great job of finding the facts and history from Anna’s side. I’ve watched the show for years, before Anna and Josh courted. Your conclusion about her family being in prison ministry therefore being more forgiving of a rocky past is spot on!
No mention of his girlfriend who dumped him when she found out about his history of SA? I don't believe for a second that he ever loved Anna but only saw her as a willing mask.

I appreciate that you shine a light on Anna's background so clearly, making the connection between her family's ministry to prisoners and her compassion (and perhaps the Duggar's calculation) that she would help "save" a struggling sinner. I love your take on this! I don’t believe the public realized just how brainwashed Anna is. She’s been taught from birth that she is to worship her husband or burn in hell for eternity. Her entire reality is created by Jimbo. It’s absolutely disgusting because she will likely never recover or “snap out of it”. Possibly because of the fame someone can reach her but again, she is on strict lockdown- no speaking to anyone per Jimbo. He probably cut off her social media access so she isn’t “influenced by the demons”, but then again, she is so brainwashed he probably didn’t have to. It’s so very sad and my heart aches for Anna. This was so good! I appreciate how you spoke about the religion respectfully while acknowledging that it’s not the way it should be. It’s so sad that they ended up being the face of Baptists (and Westboro 🤢) because it really caused a greater force of legalism in the Baptist denomination. I’m happy to see Josh being prosecuted because I’m seeing it open the eyes of many people I grew up with. They don’t realize that the person they are sitting next to could have this entire second life hidden away.

Quite sure they talked to their kids one on one more than that. They likely had that appointment just to make sure the kids were guaranteed at least that much time if it were an especially busy week.
Imagine needing to talk to your parents and them telling you is not your turn wait till Wednesday when we have our one on one 😂. 15 minutes was all they can afford because the rest of the time they spent making babies.

Really appreciate the way you cover this. I've seen so many people trash Anna for not leaving Josh, but not understanding the extent of how difficult that is to do with how the group functions. If by chance, Anna wanted to leave, she would be completely cut off from the only community and support she has. Effectively, shunned, and although there exists programs out there to help facilitating the leave, the number of kids she would have to provide for with her limited job opportunities would be near impossible. They really make it so that if you have a change of heart, it's not easy to leave. The homeschooling, large families, dynamics; it all leads up to being caught in deep.

Really excellent work here. I’ve been following the IBLP/ATI and it’s super families since the mid 2000s and I can’t find anything off base with this video. It also says a whole lot in a little bit of time. I’m going to see if part2 is up and see what else you have produced, as this is above and beyond what other creators have tried to produce. Anna seems like such a kind person. As you look at the pics and vids, it's so sad to see her eyes become dull and lifeless. The light leaving is heartbreaking. I was hoping she would get out, but she is staying on the Duggar compound. I feel she will never be able to leave with her kids and they don't deserve that. It's scary how far brainwashing will go with someone.
I'm a Christian, and have been my whole life. I grew up in an environment where I could ask questions about my faith, and there was never this sense of doom and damnation if I didn't follow (such as evident here). This may be a hot take, but this variation of Christianity is hella toxic and damaging. How many others have church hurt, and/or have walked away from God entirely, due to growing up in environments like this? I think that is so much worse than not dressing conservative, or not speaking softly. My heart just breaks for those hurt. Also. I think it is Christian environments like this that are breeding grounds for what we are seeing unfolding, with covering up abuse, an imbalance of authority, and even seeing that the parents have been placed on a higher pedestal than God.
absolutely, it's religious abuse to instill fear in people and force them to change beliefs out of fear and manipulation. so many stories of people escaping (usually certain branches of christianity) and still having that fear they won't be a good enough person because what they were taught about hell and sins of just existing as a human
I don’t think it’s a hot take, I think the majority of Christian’s don’t live the life these families have lived and joined into these weird cults. It’s like they take one thing and literally turn it into something it wasn’t meant to be. “Be fruitful and multiply” was said to the first people to ever exist, because… no one else existed. the duggars took that out of the context, and in a full planet, in todays world, have 20 kids. (20? 19? You get it.) That’s how many of us Christian’s feel watching this family and the things they do.
It's not like you're wrong. As someone who also grew up in a Christian household & still follows Christ today, I've actually experienced a church that was eerily similar to what these families practice. However, my mom realized something was terribly wrong & removed us from that environment. It's extremely toxic & you begin to see that these sects of "Christians" start adding to the Bible & basically make up rules as they go, desperately leaning on people's ignorance & need for guidance. I was always disturbed by the Duggars' entire system even when tv was trying to romanticize it, it wasn't healthy & them parading around on tv is why everything basically crumbled for them.

When the Bible talks about men loving their wives, it comes FIRST before the woman's submission, and sects like this have it completely backward. If the emphasis is completely on the woman submitting to everything and anything, it can be extremely destructive and not God's plan for marriage. The husband has to treat the wife with loving sacrifice and she responds to that out of feeling safe and loved. Also women are only fertile a small amount of time each month. If He wanted us to constantly be pregnant, then we would constantly be fertile. But He's given us an opportunity to enjoy sex without babies too. Does anyone get it?

Thank you for covering this story without throwing Christianity in general under the bus or making hateful comments. My husband was the middle child of 10, raised IBLP and there’s things about it that were horrible and damaging and there’s things that were more positive. His parents were new Christians and easy prey for “cultish” offshoots like Gothard’s. We are still devoted Christians (though NOT legalistic) still want a big family, still homeschool. The bad stuff would be getting spanked in sets of 20, corporal punishment, stringent dress codes, actual misogyny, and the emotional neglect of women and children. But it seems like people are so hasty to demonize the people who are involved in IBLP, when not all of them are bad and in fact many of them are victims themselves.

I grew up in the Independent Fundamental Baptist community in NW Arkansas. I think it’s generally a positive thing that most young kids at my church had the skills to look out for their siblings, clean up after themselves & others, handle responsibility, etc. I don’t think think this lifestyle equates to abusive parentification when kids are still able to depend on consistent adult presence, guidance, and support. (Though the Duggar’s method is much more questionable because this family chose to have so MANY children in nuclear family structure (house was only 2 parents + kids) where it seems there weren’t enough adults to balance the sheer number of young children). But what’s more concerning to me in these families is how much more responsibility, labor, and behavioral standards are imposed on the GIRLS, and at a much younger age than their brothers. I noticed that young girls were often given tasks at times when boys were still allowed to play. Even church activities for teenage girls were frequently based around domestic tasks (running nursery or kitchen) while teen boys activities are more often just games and sports lol. Not only that, but boys can dress in such a way that they fit in with kids their own age beyond the church community, but girls in these communities have to wear antiquated clothing so that it is obvious they are part of an IFB church, and so they have more difficulty socializing with kids & teens outside the IFB community. This is all SO intentional, in order to keep girls disciplined in their social trajectory of getting married and having babies ASAP after high school. It’s all conditioning them to be unpaid labor for their husbands, and to be trapped in financial dependence on said husbands.
Don't sound like theirs any guidance there. If their was something would have been done to stop Josh from abusing his sisters and the other girl . They just sent him to those people in little rock in hopes other people wouldn't know what was going on.

I must admit I’ve struggled with Anna over the past few years flip-flopped into having compassion for her one minute and complete anger and frustration for her the next. But I still can’t completely write her off. My ultimate thoughts are that she didn’t stand a chance groomed from puberty to be the perfect wife mother and help me to her husband and follow the teachings of the IBLP to the latter. She has not done anything wrong she’s lived her pure godly life she married the man her father helped her choose, Bor him seven children without complaint. Realistically what more could this godly woman have done. This lifestyle marrying Josh has basically ruined her life and I blame her parents for seeing the opportunity to marry their daughter into A family who at the time were IB LP royalty. And sacrificing their daughters happiness for fame and financial gain.

Except Josh was 14, he was very repentant and remorseful and it didn’t happen again. Most parents wouldn’t see their young teen as a predator. Obviously they were wrong. But I get how they thought he had gotten beyond it.

I have no problem with the older siblings helping the younger ones. I do take issue with having so many children that the only way to care for them is to schedule appointments for one on one time. Nineteen children? How is that physically or emotionally healthy?

I disagree for many years of human existence that was a way of life, the narcissistic self absorbed way people live now and raise their children isn’t ideal either based on the drug addiction, and rampant mental health problems within society at large. I don’t think expecting children to help with their siblings is toxic behaviour in itself, although I will agree the way the Duggar’s did it was toxic, protecting a pedo and sacrificing their daughters,teaching backwards misinformation about women’s place in society and putting their children in public when they were too young to consent, are all horrific things the Duggar’s did, I think expecting older children to help with the younger ones was likely the least damaging thing they did in terms of bad parenting.
The more I learn about Anna, the more I feel sorry for her. The saddest part for me was hearing that she used to be an outspoken and assertive child. Her fundamentalist upbringing broke her spirit.
She chose to marry into this train wreck. She knew Josh did those things when she first met him. She has to be accountable for that choice.

Imagine being an infertile woman born into a quiverful family. As someone who can’t have children I’ve dealt with a lot of pain because of it including comments from family and past romantic partners. I can’t imagine being in a family where your “value” is completely encompassed around childbearing.

I had fertility issues for 20 years. Myself and extended family are all Christians. I am so thankful that our worth isn't based on having a baby. My family just thought, " A baby will come if it is God's will and plan". My Husband's family, they aren't quiverfull, but they passed so much judgment on us not having kids. Like we were less than they were. Very hurtful. While I didn't go to a quiverfull church, many Christians are very judgmental if you don't have kids. They assume you are being selfish and not wanting children. We tried for years and years. We were surprised with a baby last year. I will never treat someone with infertility as my Husband's family treated us.....it is really disgusting. Not only were they nasty to us, but if someone had more than 2 or 3 kids, they talked nasty about them. Some " Christians " are just mean.

I really hate how the Duggars agreed to the courtship because Anna’s family believed that criminals could be redeemed, and they knew their own son was a criminal. They made sure to choose a wife and family that would look past what he did and believe he could be redeemed, despite the fact that he never received any help or punishment for what he did. It’s so sad to see.

It's honestly heartbreaking that the catalyst for her relationship with Jesus is one based not on love, but on fear. I feel like this is so telling & speaks volumes to how & why she entered her marriage to Josh & especially why she won't leave, it's all centered on fear. Living a life dictated by fear is incredibly detrimental to one's growth & happiness in the human experience. It robs you from living in the present & impedes any kind of personal evolution. Living this way might feel safe, but it's stagnant, never fully realized & just plain sad.

It reminded me of an old neighbor of mine who kept pressuring me to say the "salvation prayer," going so far as to warn me before a long road trip that I had better say the prayer before my voyage because if I'm in a wreck and die I'll go to hell. For her the only path to "salvation" was to say this magical prayer. I reassured her that I would be fine if I died since my "salvation prayer" happened in the form of my Confirmation in the Catholic Church.

Exactly! I had a friend who is a devout Christian and she told me she was "saved". I started asking her, were you promiscuous at one point? She said no. I said were you an addict? She said, no. I said, well why do you think you needed saved? (She was always a good, solid person, had challenges like anyone else but I was so confused by her) She just kept saying she was ""saved"". This was 15 years ago and I scratch my head over this all the time.

She has used religion as her identity, personality, etc. was really hard growing up and I hated going to church every Sunday. Even as young as 9 I would cuss out the people there in my head 😂. Well when I was 11, the preacher as he was talking, started walking up near the pew I was sitting in. He looked at me and said “would you come up here real quick”. Strangely I already had a feeling this was going to happen, before he ever said or insinuated anything. I didn’t want to go up there, especially not in front of anyone, it was embarrassing and I didn’t like church in the first place. But I walked up there, he said would you like to ask Jesus in your heart today? I said yeah. He had me repeat after him a short prayer, and as I was doing it I started feeling an overwhelming sense of lightness, like any negative emotion or feeling in me was replaced with pure joy. And as the prayer ended, he blew his breath towards me (felt like his breath was the Holy Spirit/God honestly) and in that moment the joy and peace became even more overwhelming and I lost my balance and fell back. Not completely but I took like two steps back before I caught myself. The next two days I remember feeling the joy and peace still lingering, the happiest I’ve ever felt. It slowly faded after a while but it’s something I’ll never forget. I’ve never felt any peace, happiness, lightness, Or joy like that again in my life. I’m 28 now with three kids, and while I believe in god, we don’t go to church and I don’t teach them about the Bible or god really. But mainly because of the crappy upbringing I had where everything with my parents involved religion. My relationship with god is small as I’m still trying to separate god from the religious stance my parents put in my head. Just thought I’d share what being saved could mean for someone.

Seeing what a bubbly outgoing young woman she was, to the meek, quiet wallflower she’s become is so sad to see. You can see the progression from the start to their relationship to now. Also, so young & 7 children? Josh will NEVER be rehabilitated...I hope he’s sentenced to the fullest extent, so she can finally have her body back (not that having a big family is a bad thing, I hope ya’ll know where I’m coming from), get the help she so desperately needs & hopefully raise her children out of the public eye.

Watching her tell her testimony is so surreal to me. She was struggling with the same thoughts and questions as I was right before I left the church. I remember feeling like I had to pretend to be a Christian and feeling so confused by other people's immediate and easy connection to God. I was so jealous of the people that were able to have such blind faith. It's sad watching it from the other side after getting out and realizing that I was heading down the same path she ended up on. She was literally groomed and brainwashed for this life, and I wish she could wake up and see the other side.

I met my bio dad at 16 and got in deep in evangelical Christianity and it was heart breaking to constantly be told that our faith, or our prayers or our relationship with God wasn't good because I wasn't manifesting my prayers. Another thing that was drilled into me was how discouraged we were in the act of having self love (loving myself!) which was utterly damaging to me as I self harmed through addiction and other behaviors. I am now free of all that I still love God but i now realize how much religion is actually a cult. It is used to control people especially their pocket books and it does this through fear. So sad!

Yep me too. I would terry for so long and feel so defeated when I never spoke in tongues and thought it was a sin to question the beliefs of the church. Now that I’m agnostic life is so much easier for me. Nothing wrong with being a Christian either but have to be really careful to still allow freedom of thought which she sadly did not have
@@AliciaM5555 there is such a difference between Faith and Religion and a lot of people just don't understand that. I grew up in church and didn't get closer to God, until I stopped going at 18. I've had friends heavy into Pentecostal church be SO MISERABLE, because their husbands don't care about them (they're just there to meet their s*x needs), they're expected to work and do all the house chores and take care of the kids themselves, and they get bad headaches because their hair is so long and they aren't allowed to cut it. Its just sad.
Good backstory for all members of the IBLP cult. Anna and Josh's story is pretty much the same for all young people who court and marry in that cult. The only reason Josh married Anna is that the Holt girl broke off their engagement after finding out what he had done. Jimbob wanted Josh to marry the Holt girl because their families were close and the Holts were wealthy had political connections as well. Anna Duggar was the second choice for Josh Duggar. She was the perfect substitute because her family was poor living in a trailer. And Josh knew Anna was a super fan and would put up with whatever he did. Anna and her family stalked the Duggars because of their fame and their power within the IBLP organization. She prayed for Josh to marry her. I guess you have to be careful what you pray for you might just get it. Josh never respected Anna because she came from the wrong side of the tracks. If he could have married a wealthy girl in their cult he would have.
It does not seem they attempted to deal with Josh's problems. Marriage isn't therapy for deviant behavior.

Sounds like it was literally everyone deciding that Anna is perfect FOR Josh as if she’s an object, without Anna’s input in the matter at all. It’s sickening and heartbreaking to watch.
I’ve watched several documentaries on the Duggars. She was a fan of his family long before meeting them/him in person. She prayed that he would marry her even while he was courting the Holt’s daughter (she ran when she heard about the mol3s!ion). Imho that means she was coveting what someone else had. I do think her family’s belief in redemption played a huge part in them marrying. I also belief she overlooked red flags in hopes of fame.
It appears that she really liked Josh however it does appear that the parents had some control over who they date.
What makes me sick is there are people in the IBLP that will wonder what Anna did to make him an ungodly man when the reality is Josh is escaping scrutiny of his motivations and actions. He is sentenced based on his actions and inactions only.
Very true! There is a book called “The Great Sex Rescue” (pub 2020). The author references all of these very popular Christian books about marriage and sex, specifically, and quotes the MANY times these authors blame men’s infidelity on women. Like, your husband cheats because you got fat after having a baby. Or your husband wouldn’t cheat if you’d be a more satisfying wife. 🤢 It seems Anna believes Josh is innocent, but even if she opens her eyes to his guilt, she will blame herself, like she caused it by being a bad wife.

I can't imagine that kind of mental burden. I think it's something that has been overlooked by other creators who attack her. As someone who grew up in a similar cult, you’ve explained this and researched this very well. Thank you also for making the statements in the beginning about different behaviors and avoiding generalizations. This allows for those considering leaving the cult become less defensive and open to listening to what you have to say. That being said, having grown up in this and having family in that exact cult, women have NO rights. I have a 29 year old female cousin who is not allowed to move out until her dad has chosen her husband and allowed her to leave. If she does move out on her own, her parents told her she can never return. The amount of child abuse is at least 3 out of 5, speaking from first hand experience. Victims are blamed and shamed. The more awareness we can bring to this, the better chances people will start getting out.

The way Anna speaks, telling her story, she really sounds like a child.
My seven year old talks like that. Goes to show how these kind of extreme practices really stunts someone’s development. I feel sorry on how her life turned out especially since she never had a say in it. Having never watched any episodes of the Duggars, this whole thing looks insane.
All the women are sheltered and sound immature. No newspaper, no magazines, no radio, no TV. Education at home via religion based information such as the planet only being 10,000 years old. No outside real world friends.

Yeah it made me so sad and uncomfortable. She tells it as this fun and beautiful story of redemption and realization, when from the outside it’s so obviously a story about an independent little girl being shamed and terrorized into conforming so hard that she completely lost herself. Seeing how sad and empty she looks nowadays with all she’s been through, I can only hope that little girl is still in there and finds a way to come out

Seeing that old footage of Josh talking about what he was looking for in a partner was really disturbing. Knowing that all of that was filmed after his actions really irked me. And then the scene with the siblings lined up and seeing his sisters and knowing the girls were m*****ed by him already was so sad. They look so young and it’s heartbreaking knowing that their big brother hurt them and the parents didn’t really protect them…. They deserved so much better than that. I even feel bad for Anna. If she really didn’t know the extent of his previous behavior and her religion and upbringing prevents her leaving him; that must be a living hell.

I got several pieces of information from this video, but the craziest one to me is that Anna “officially” became Christian (“in her heart”) after she got in a car accident and determined that if she died in the accident, she would’ve gone to hell. Not “oh Jesus talked to me” or experienced some side of “sign” from God. She was literally scared to go to hell. What the actual fuck
Yeah, I'm catholic, and I can tell you. They take the words fear of God far to literally. To be godfearing means to be in awe of him. Not being afraid of going to hell for not being baptized. Like, I would be more moved by her conversion if the miracle was what converted her, as opposed to being scared into it by the car crash.
But honestly there is so much wrong with this courtship. I'm sorry, but don't do anything just pray about it if you are attracted to someone, but in the mean time the parents are arranging the courtship is wrong on so many levels. Less as a way to get famous and more as almost I don't know, a ministry thing? Also I'm sure the added money from a hit TLC show didn't hurt when they have 20 kids on just Jim Bob's income. Maybe they did do it partially to get famous, but that's never really been the vibe I picked up.

I take issue with evangelicals who work very hard to "save souls" and convince them they'll burn in hell if their religion isn't straight. If we all could be indifferent to the religious beliefs of others, or lack of them, the world would be a much more peaceful place for us all.

No mention of his girlfriend who dumped him when she found out about his history of SA? I don't believe for a second that he ever loved Anna but only saw her as a willing mask.
You brought up a great point around 22:58 that Anna was likely selected due to her family's prison ministry and forgiving spirit towards those convicted of crimes. That is an interesting point I hadn't heard before.

I appreciate that you shine a light on Anna's background so clearly, making the connection between her family's ministry to prisoners and her compassion (and perhaps the Duggar's calculation) that she would help "save" a struggling sinner. I've never seen this analyzed this way, and it makes so much sense. I also appreciate that you separate out Anna's perspective from your own thoughts and analysis.
I love your take on this! I don’t believe the public realized just how brainwashed Anna is. She’s been taught from birth that she is to worship her husband or burn in hell for eternity. Her entire reality is created by Jimbo. It’s absolutely disgusting because she will likely never recover or “snap out of it”. Possibly because of the fame someone can reach her but again, she is on strict lockdown- no speaking to anyone per Jimbo. He probably cut off her social media access so she isn’t “influenced by the demons”, but then again, she is so brainwashed he probably didn’t have to. It’s so very sad and my heart aches for Anna. I truly believe she knows not what she does. Somebody has to protect those kids though. She’s choosing Josh and it’s devastating, but she thinks she will go to hell if she doesn’t.

This was so good! I appreciate how you spoke about the religion respectfully while acknowledging that it’s not the way it should be. It’s so sad that they ended up being the face of Baptists (and Westboro 🤢) because it really caused a greater force of legalism in the Baptist denomination. I’m happy to see Josh being prosecuted because I’m seeing it open the eyes of many people I grew up with. They don’t realize that the person they are sitting next to could have this entire second life hidden away.

Really appreciate the way you cover this. I've seen so many people trash Anna for not leaving Josh, but not understanding the extent of how difficult that is to do with how the group functions. If by chance, Anna wanted to leave, she would be completely cut off from the only community and support she has. Effectively, shunned, and although there exists programs out there to help facilitating the leave, the number of kids she would have to provide for with her limited job opportunities would be near impossible. They really make it so that if you have a change of heart, it's not easy to leave. The homeschooling, large families, dynamics; it all leads up to being caught in deep.

Really excellent work here. I’ve been following the IBLP/ATI and it’s super families since the mid 2000s and I can’t find anything off base with this video. It also says a whole lot in a little bit of time. I’m going to see if part2 is up and see what else you have produced, as this is above and beyond what other creators have tried to produce. as a Christian (not of these denominations at all, im non denominational) i appreciate the unbiased tone you presented this. it is sad when people twist the word to fit their sin, but everything comes to light and those that commit wrongs will be punished eventually. the beginning of the video was nicely said & i loved the "this isnt tea it's information!" you are very mature, i've seen so far about 5 of your videos today and i applaud your good work! keep it up. you are very well spoken.

Anna seems like such a kind person. As you look at the pics and vids, it's so sad to see her eyes become dull and lifeless. The light leaving is heartbreaking. I was hoping she would get out, but she is staying on the Duggar compound. I feel she will never be able to leave with her kids and they don't deserve that. It's scary how far brainwashing will go with someone.
I'm a Christian, and have been my whole life. I grew up in an environment where I could ask questions about my faith, and there was never this sense of doom and damnation if I didn't follow (such as evident here). This may be a hot take, but this variation of Christianity is hella toxic and damaging. How many others have church hurt, and/or have walked away from God entirely, due to growing up in environments like this? I think that is so much worse than not dressing conservative, or not speaking softly. My heart just breaks for those hurt.
Also. I think it is Christian environments like this that are breeding grounds for what we are seeing unfolding, with covering up abuse, an imbalance of authority, and even seeing that the parents have been placed on a higher pedestal than God.
absolutely, it's religious abuse to instill fear in people and force them to change beliefs out of fear and manipulation. so many stories of people escaping (usually certain branches of christianity) and still having that fear they won't be a good enough person because what they were taught about hell and sins of just existing as a human
I don’t think it’s a hot take, I think the majority of Christian’s don’t live the life these families have lived and joined into these weird cults. It’s like they take one thing and literally turn it into something it wasn’t meant to be. “Be fruitful and multiply” was said to the first people to ever exist, because… no one else existed. the duggars took that out of the context, and in a full planet, in todays world, have 20 kids. (20? 19? You get it.)
That’s how many of us Christian’s feel watching this family and the things they do.
It's not like you're wrong. As someone who also grew up in a Christian household & still follows Christ today, I've actually experienced a church that was eerily similar to what these families practice. However, my mom realized something was terribly wrong & removed us from that environment. It's extremely toxic & you begin to see that these sects of "Christians" start adding to the Bible & basically make up rules as they go, desperately leaning on people's ignorance & need for guidance.
I was always disturbed by the Duggars' entire system even when tv was trying to romanticize it, it wasn't healthy & them parading around on tv is why everything basically crumbled for them.
@@bunchofbrunners8473 Totally. I always want to point out that God makes things a certain way for a reason, like the order of things--first things are always more important. When the Bible talks about men loving their wives, it comes FIRST before the woman's submission, and sects like this have it completely backward. If the emphasis is completely on the woman submitting to everything and anything, it can be extremely destructive and not God's plan for marriage. The husband has to treat the wife with loving sacrifice and she responds to that out of feeling safe and loved. Also women are only fertile a small amount of time each month. They figured married life would “fix” him and take care of his needs. Or once he got into a adult routine then everything would be ok.
Thank you for covering this story without throwing Christianity in general under the bus or making hateful comments. My husband was the middle child of 10, raised IBLP and there’s things about it that were horrible and damaging and there’s things that were more positive. His parents were new Christians and easy prey for “cultish” offshoots like Gothard’s. We are still devoted Christians (though NOT legalistic) still want a big family, still homeschool. The bad stuff would be getting spanked in sets of 20, corporal punishment, stringent dress codes, actual misogyny, and the emotional neglect of women and children. But it seems like people are so hasty to demonize the people who are involved in IBLP, when not all of them are bad and in fact many of them are victims themselves.

I grew up in the Independent Fundamental Baptist community in NW Arkansas. I think it’s generally a positive thing that most young kids at my church had the skills to look out for their siblings, clean up after themselves & others, handle responsibility, etc. I don’t think think this lifestyle equates to abusive parentification when kids are still able to depend on consistent adult presence, guidance, and support. (Though the Duggar’s method is much more questionable because this family chose to have so MANY children in nuclear family structure (house was only 2 parents + kids) where it seems there weren’t enough adults to balance the sheer number of young children).
But what’s more concerning to me in these families is how much more responsibility, labor, and behavioral standards are imposed on the GIRLS, and at a much younger age than their brothers.
I noticed that young girls were often given tasks at times when boys were still allowed to play. Even church activities for teenage girls were frequently based around domestic tasks (running nursery or kitchen) while teen boys activities are more often just games and sports lol.
Not only that, but boys can dress in such a way that they fit in with kids their own age beyond the church community, but girls in these communities have to wear antiquated clothing so that it is obvious they are part of an IFB church, and so they have more difficulty socializing with kids & teens outside the IFB community. This is all SO intentional, in order to keep girls disciplined in their social trajectory of getting married and having babies ASAP after high school. It’s all conditioning them to be unpaid labor for their husbands, and to be trapped in financial dependence on said husbands.
Don't sound like theirs any guidance there. If their was something would have been done to stop Josh from abusing his sisters and the other girl . They just sent him to those people in little rock in hopes other people wouldn't know what was going on.

Watching young Anna Duggar with her sister talking about wanting to volunteer in prison ministry and having no idea that in the future she’ll be essentially REQUIRED to be the most disgusting type of prisoner’s personal support system
Her talking about she'd be in hell if she died as a child and a responsibility of her parents was crazy. So much of what they believe is not Biblically based.
Hence why she was chosen for Josh……
I must admit I’ve struggled with Anna over the past few years flip-flopped into having compassion for her one minute and complete anger and frustration for her the next. But I still can’t completely write her off. My ultimate thoughts are that she didn’t stand a chance groomed from puberty to be the perfect wife mother and help me to her husband and follow the teachings of the IBLP to the latter. She has not done anything wrong she’s lived her pure godly life she married the man her father helped her choose, Bor him seven children without complaint. Realistically what more could this godly woman have done. This lifestyle marrying Josh has basically ruined her life and I blame her parents for seeing the opportunity to marry their daughter into A family who at the time were IB LP royalty. And sacrificing their daughters happiness for fame and financial gain.
god i hold so much disgust for her. she is constantly calling him in jail, despite being aware of everything he has done. seen holding hands with him going into court. it's just disgusting. i don't feel bad.

Anna is a grown woman with 7 kids . She knows what right or wrong . She should be worrying about what Josh will do to them when he gets out of prison.

She and her PARENTS knew Josh had a problem before they even started courting. Who would willing let their child pursue a relationship with a predator. I’m sure they low-key blame her for Josh’s behavior.
Josh has money, they sold their daughter out.
Except Josh was 14, he was very repentant and remorseful and it didn’t happen again. Most parents wouldn’t see their young teen as a predator. Obviously they were wrong. But I get how they thought he had gotten beyond it.
Poor Anna, married to the most dangerous kind of predator, and living in denial about the situation. So sad for her children.

“Michelle reserves the privilege of being the children’s first buddy” … Mother… she’s their Mother & that’s her natural responsibility & while it is a privilege to be a Mother it is also no one else responsibility but her own. I also get that they prefer to have the Lord decide how many children they should have …but surely they wouldn’t go out & purchase/ adopt pet after pet or home after home under the same notion. The Lord blesses you with money, sure, but if you & you alone can’t provide adequate care for each & everyone of those things/ people then don’t blindly collect them. Children deserve better.
I have no problem with the older siblings helping the younger ones. I do take issue with having so many children that the only way to care for them is to schedule appointments for one on one time. Nineteen children? How is that physically or emotionally healthy?
