This skirt turned out great! I can't wait to see the suit jacket, mistakes and all! I'll be sure to call this retro futuristic realtor if I'm ever in the market for a apartment in the clouds.
Ranging from historical Victorian looks to fetish ones; it's all part of being Gothic! That holographic effect is impressive; it's like light reflecting off an oil slick!
This begs the question "exactly how many of your friends and aquaintances will be intimate with the inside of your skirt, to make the piece labelling an issue?" I dont usually go around showing people the inners of my clothes even if I do know them really well! You brighten up my day Bianca!❤💥! I am totally besotted with your takes on the Blade Runner fashion. I love it!
'What are you doing here, kid'? 😂 So, glad you not only leave in your mishaps and poke a bit of fun at yourself. Takes the pressure off of drafting and sewing for us less formally trained. Mistakes happen❣
Once again.... fabulous. And if anyone is going to be inspecting the inside of your suit, including any one of us, better be buying you dinner and drinks. As for the needle, I'm sure you know already but there should be a special needle for that material. It's sharper and lasts longer than a standard needle or a knit needle.
I love the final look! The contrast in texture is really lovely. Also, the day one realizes that filling multiple bobbins with black/white/most common color thread at the same time is a good day. I was sewing a bunch of Victorian underwear and I realized I should just fill five bobbins with white. I will get through it, I have enough spares, and if I don't, I should buy more bobbins.
plastic clips are excellent for working with these vinyl/pvc fabrics, instead of using pins. would recommend! Also on a modern machine, a bit of tape on the underside of the presser foot is also helpful to prevent sticking.
Yay! Thank you B! 🖤 Edit; the flat-lining is genius! Why have I not thought of that before?! I've just been struggling with wavy, wonky seams forever. You're my hero
I am totally in awe! Those chevrons are amazing, Bianca. The entire skirt is beautiful and so YOU. I'm a little too old to wear Gothic but I certainly love seeing you wear all the different styles you design.
Are you truly too old? I understand the reticence but I am sure this kind of look can work even better on older people and may be worth a try dressing how you like! :D
I'm currently working on my own color block sewing project! Why make something with only 9 pieces when you can make it with 35? I wanted one of those oversized sweatshirts, thought it would be funny to just scale up a regular sweatshirt to the point that the sleeves just about touch the floor and color blocking was a necessity because of the sheer size of the thing. It's a truly preposterous amount of fabric, I have smaller blankets. You've really given me the confidence to draft my own patterns. I made SLEEVES for the first time and they WORKED. Thank you for the inspiration and this very on topic video for me to watch while I work!
Love the skirt but definitely more of a iron on transfer type of person simply to avoid all the layers of sewing. I live quilting but it's a big process.
I used to work at a heat press t-shirt place...and this kinda texture blocked look would be SO EASY to do with the heat press vinyl 😩 And you could do intricate tiny patterns and stuff...I could buy the cutter machine and iron on material but that would be such a rabbit hole lol
I love this skirt. It's so much fun. You always make the process seem less intimidating. I wouldn't have thought to back the stretchy fabric with the pique to prevent the stretch fabric from being too stretchy. Can't wait to see the jacket!
i made a PVC skirt recently. i had to mark my pieces to know what was what. i personally use chalk. i even take the regular school chalk and sharpen it with a pencil sharpener to get a better smaller tip. when i want to remove the marks i use a damp sponge and wipe it away. i also use wonder clips when using this fabric. i worry about misplacing my needles and putting a hole outside the seam allowance.
If I were flatlining anyways, I would have just done the chevrons as applique. But I am lazy, and you were showing us how to colour-block and it looks fantastic, I adore anything shiny and especially anything holographic! I would totally label everything on the inside, I do that even when it doesn't matter. And yes, there is a certain correctness to using a machine from the 1950s to sew futuristic stuff, I shall keep that in mind should I ever find fabric like that and decide to do something with it!! Maybe it would be the excuse I need to get my treadle machine the band it needs...
The color block skirt is just delicious. Looking forward to seeing more videos for the color block clothing line. It is so edgy and fun. I never thought of flat-lining a stretchy or lightweight fabric to the main fabric of a project to give it stability but more importantly the proper hang of the rest of the garment. I have always used interfacing or fusible webbing. They never seem to have the right body. Once again, I've learned something new watching your videos. Keep them coming please. 😀
Flat lining the tshirt chunks with a thin muslin is the key to making a t shirt quilt… if anyone ever asks you to make one… run the other way :) I imagine it would work in clothes too.
@@Susanfuzz thank you for that. I've never made a quilt but is on my list of things to learn. I was thinking of starting with a Tshirt quilt. Never k ew they were flat-lined with muslin but it makes sense.
Your Singer machine has the same design on it as the similar Singer i grew up using. Every time I see a closeup of you sewing I can smell my old machine. It is a nice memory.
This oddly has neo-noir and technowear vibes. I guess it's not too odd since it's a classic pattern (forgive me, I'm not good with history so I avoided decade specific terms) and spandex. Usually when you think of color block, something more recent pops into your head, like loud, patchwork, button-up shirts. This was amazingly creative, and I hope it was fun to make, despite how labor intensive it was. It's always refreshing to see new spins taken on classics.
Terrific video!!! Love love love the color-block look - especially with the exotic fabric. Adds a bit of glam & danger. (I would personally also love to see a matching handbag in the same materials, and maybe add some shiny black boots??? A girl can dream...) Can't wait to see the jacket part of the project.
I really loved how the texture blocking turned out. And all of that top stitching...Oh my! Can't wait to see the jacket comes out. Much Love from the UK xx
Lovely! Take a knits class. You will love sewing with knits. Lynda Maynard does them with zoom classes. I’m taking her tailoring now. I love wovens, too, but sometimes nothing compares.
It is 2:29 AM in my country right now as I finish this video, but it’s so worth it to watch your videos as they come out! Can’t wait for the jacket, so I can make a dress like this myself :)
I loved this skirt !!! I was wondering if it would be a good idea to have a second pattern but keep it whole, with all the notes of the panels to use it as a reference to ease the process of finding which piece goes where....🤔
Yep there are still things made with pure latex I only know this because I have an allergy to latex. Very annoying at times Love the skirt it sure makes for an interesting outfit.
Love the skirt, it came out amazing. I am trying to put myself on a no buy because I haven’t sown anything in months and have a stash I should be ashamed of, Bug you might have just convinced me to pick up some of the weird holographic coated fabric I saw a few weeks ago and hadn't left my mind. I am in a need for weird/interesting clothes
Finding this so pretty... the headache of plasticy fabrics Is too strong for me to order some though, also as someone who is really sparse with pinning I found it so funny to see the maniacal number of pins when you were attaching the waistband in the best way possible 🤣🤣
This turned out great, I'm looking forward to seeing the jacket with this. I wonder if it would be easier to do the skirt in four panels, front, back and sides, with the chevrons as appliques? Since the piqué is the heavier fabric, it wouldn't affect how it moves, would it? My concern would be the shifty-ness of the stretch fabric, but if it was stay-stitched all around where the fabric would fold under for "hems"/topstitching, maybe that would minimize that? Just thinking out loud.
When making patchwork with repeating stripes like you have here quilters will cut long strips of the fabrics and sew them together, then cut the shapes that are needed out of the resulting block. The same method may help with this sort of pattern.
Re: pins and plastic-y surface on a stretch fabric - excess holes also increase the chance of the coating starting to peel over time ETA: if one does indeed burn plastic on their iron plate acetone is a great solvent but only if the plate is stainless steel and not teflon like some modern irons are (acetone melts the teflon)
You'd actually be surprised at how much is made of real rubber tree latex these days. It's in band-aids, mattresses, and most elastics along with a bunch of other things and companies often don't say if they do or do not use latex because they want to protect trade secrets. Source: my experience from living with someone with a severe latex allergy
It could just be me, but I feel like your past few videos have felt sort of rushed and sped up (the intro and voiceover, I mean) to the point that setting the videos to 0.75x speed is better to watch. Otherwise, great work as always. I would love to see the colour block chevron dress from the same lookbook but I understand that the process would be very similar to the Blade Runner dress.
I love that holographic fabric, it's so pretty! I'm wondering, when you did the darts on the back panel, would it also have been possible to sew the darts into just the woven lining fabric, and then traced the darted lining to cut out the shape of the knit fabric piece? I know it's more steps, but if someone wanted to avoid having the dart lines on the special effect fabric, would that work, given the stretchiness of the knit? Also, I feel like I say this every time I comment so I'm sorry if it gets repetitive, but your eyeshadow look in this video is so gorgeous!
I always do my skirt waist bands that way because I basically don't care what other people think of the inside of my skirt I think it is a very dramatic look
The first time I sewed with a knit fabric nearly put me off sewing for life. I've learned a lot since then, but still stick to woven fabrics as much as I can.
This reminds me of my dreams of a full on leather femme fatale dress, I feel like it's one of those things that I'd only feel comfortable wearing out with a girlfriend, so it's on the back burner until I actually make an effort to date 😂
Hey, fellow sewists and Bianca enthusiasts, I found another super sewing that you might enjoy: Tara Dighton. She is on TH-cam under her name and does vintage sewing videos. She is a pro, too, and her esthetic is so fun.

Take a drink every time Bianca uses her hand instead of the clapper, lol. Thank you for the colour blocking demo, the skirt looks great!

The 99k was lucky to find you, she has such a rewarding life in your lil sewing den!
I want this skirt so bad! It's so cool! I would wear it with a cropped white tank and some combat boots😎
Liking this video before watching because I know it will be good.
Definately Blade Runner worthy. You look exquisite in that skirt and top with the perfect under clothes to fit the look and shape.

"Label the crap out of the panels" made me chuckle.

Old enough to be totally eccentric and wear what the heck you want.

I am definitely going to try that tip about flatlining knits. My walking foot is so slow and noisy that I never want to do long seams on knits again.
