Side Swish Taffeta Skirt // Mandragora Suit Project Skirt

- Time to break out the silk taffeta and make an asymmetric side swishing pencil skirt to wear with my upcoming Mandragora jacket! Drafting the pattern was easy if a bit cumbersome, since with only one seam it is rather a large swath of paper. One seam makes for a quick sewing process though, plenty of time for hand finishing.

But wait there's more! A PO BOX finally wahoo!
First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

Thank you for watching!
I can’t decide which is odder, your choice of floopy and flomp as adjectives or the fact that I totally understood what you meant. 😂
This is the purpose of language after all, so I'm calling it a win 🤣❤
Haha I say my teenagers flump down on the furniture 🤣
@@bravehearticus my bunny flumphs :) it's like a flump only floofier!
@@bravehearticus Hahah, I totally get that. Basically falls and slumps at the same time! Flumps. Makes total sense!
So point #1. Your clothes are exceptional. Point #2 your styling and makeup are always on point. Both together is a VIBE that should get universal respect
Thank you Sarah!! 🖤
I can see what you mean about the polyester taffeta laying smoother but the silk is just so scrumptious looking and the sheen is incredible. I want to reach through the screen and feel that gorgeous green fabric. The iridescence is beautiful.
It’s a glowing green for sure! 🤩💚
If you have time....it would be great if you want to show us your jewellery collection. That necklace your are wearing....cant get my eyes of it.🥰
I love the idea of The Closet Historian bingo/drinking game: "You do you", taping floops, ironing darts, sewing over pins, "This fabric is just delicious", green lights, lapped zipper, "no one will see it except me, and all of you", kittens, heater/air con, silk baron fabric, Mood fabric.
The mantra of intense sewists everywhere (not just Bianca.LOL), "Things got a 'little' more involved than I originally thought."
❤We all have our own thoughts on the proper length of sewing needles. I’m of the opinion that if you are successful in your goal and didn’t destroy the world in the process then go forth and sew the things.😊
Exactly ❤✨
Both skirts are beautiful I wish I was as talented as you I'm sixty years old and I love watching you sew and create patterns
Thank you Carol!
I made this skirt in wool based on your previous tutorial. It turned out great, except my hem was uneven at the drapey part. After watching this video I realized I need to embrace the asymmetry and make another one!
It probably stretched out on the bias like a circle skirt does. If you trim and re-hem it should be fine :)
Yeah the circle cut bits will stretch if you don't let the skirt hang for a bit before hemming, but for asymmetric things I figure its a feature not a bug 😅✨
"Flomp" is such an evocative word to describe the weight and drape of a fabric 😄 it's definitely the correct companion to "floop"
I love felling down seams I have competitions with myself to see if I can make all the stitching tiny and equal I even choose it for hemming sometimes as I love the way the little diagonal stitches look when I am finished I often do them in a contrast thread to as I line everything in black and the thread is usually the colour of my fashion fabric, makes me feel like I have Tim Burton clothes on 😆 I love how these came out! and may have to get some silk so I can have a go 😁 thanks for the upload ♥️
Thank you Charlene! Felling is quite satisfyingly for sure 🧵
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who loves felling seams!
I do adore a swaggy skirt, you get drama and figure hugging, the best of both worlds!
I love orange! It makes me so happy when someone makes something beautiful with it. The green is to die for, too.
Thank you Julie!
Watching your pattern drafting helped me figure out how to draft a pattern for a 9" stuffed bunny. My smöl girl child asked for a dress for her toy. Thank you for your videos!
"Although I do get ink all over my hands..." that brought back memories of elementary school when we were allowed to use pen but only erasermate... which had ink that didn't quite dry... and was the bane of every left-hander, I was blue to my elbow...
Also stunning: hair, make-up, accessories.
Thank you Dannie!
I'm so new to sewing that I just learned you need different needles for different fabrics. 😅 Watching you work is amazing! I don't think I will ever reach your level of skill, so I will just have to live vicariously through your videos.
Thank you! You can do it!!
New Bianca bingo word FLOMP!❤😊
Amen to NEVER having to hear another football game again! And that skirt fabric is divine.
Exactly. I knew she was “my kinda people” when she said,”The only bummer about fall is football.” I can so relate.
I love the swish of these skirts! Orange isn't usually my favorite color, but the mock-up skirt looks amazing with the bat blazer, and so seasonally-appropriate :) Plus, there's something about the single-seam construction that really appeals to me on a technical level. Another great project!
Thank you! I am not usually an orange clothes person, but a skirt is far enough away from my face I thought it might work 😅🎃
I feel you could rock that skirt with a colourful tshirt and totally get away with it! Just gorgeous!🖤🖤🖤
Thank you Karin!
As someone who has only been sewing for a couple of years, it is refreshing to know that even the pros sometimes make mistakes, like not interlining skirts. Means I'm in good company!
So you've got a Mandragora outfit for each recent century!
Ooh, now i must make a bingo card: tie off darts, sew over pins, am i making any sense, clip your curves, I'm lazy, press your seems, you can move darts, lapped zipper, you do you, ...I Love hearing all of these.
in my sewing room, sewing, watching you sewing. 🙂
Just started watching your channel and bless you for sewing over pins and saying 'it's on the inside so I don't care' 😍
Ha! Thank you!
That green silk. ❤ even the orange. I love just about everything you make and this is really up there. I myself cannot wear asymmetric but on you it looks so fancy. Looks really cute with the jacket. I would love to run into you in an antique store. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Vicky!!
I absolutely adored the combo of the batty-backed top with the orange silk skirt at the end of the video. Also, your hair and makeup are stunning! You always come up with stunning outfits in gorgeous fabrics. Last, your hair and makeup are always spot on!
Thank you Dawn!
Great colors, great fashion. You look amazing in these. I love these because the angles and floopies take the eye to the fashion rather the hip.
Thank you Denise!
I'm loving both of these materials. They look amazing on you. Going out to dinner n this skirt and jacket would have all the ladies jealous. Heads would turn!!!!!
Thank you Sarah!
love it! i don't get a chance to dress up a lot, but i think i will be making one of these skirts :D
Thank you Beverley!
Our mere existences are occasions to dress up for. Be stunning, who cares.
Swishy, swishy, SWOOP! It's dressy, it's classic, and it's perfect! Of course, I love it. I hope you still have the skirt you're not happy with; re-use the silk for a top or as contrasting collar and cuffs for a blouse. May I say your hair is wicked cool!
We are finally enjoying a couple of days with cooler temps and no humidity! It's just a tease, but I will take it.
Have a glorious weekend,
xoxo's Sandie🤗
Thank you Sandie! Still waiting for it to cool down a tiny bit more here!
Hope you are safe with your rescue cats. My daughter tried to feed a stray and was bitten. Rabies shots were expensive but grateful they were available.
Oh they are not at all violent luckily, one just had a rash that they spread to me, they are all better now and I am almost all better!
Good 👍
I remember you once said how you actually don’t like sewing that much, you like having pretty clothes and I realise I’m the same way about cooking. I started getting one of those recipe box things and it’s a necessary nuisance for super tasty food
Sewing though I just find really therapeutic, but I am yet to actually finish making a thing
Don’t mind me having a parasocial relationship 😂
This isn't just super skillful and beautiful - it's ASMR - I absolutely love watching your videos! Well wishes from London
Thank you Evi! London is the best ❤
I have asymmetrical hips, so I really dig all the hip swag!
You inspired me to grab the bootstrap block pattern to start drafting my own stuff! I'm a little stuck on tailoring the block, but I know I will get there eventually.
Somehow not hearing you say sill things makes it harder to sew, your quirks make way more sense to me than an instruction booklet 😂😂😂😂
The side swoosh ❤❤❤
Beautiful skirt! Is like work on one side and party on the other
Thank you Natalia!
I am loving all the detail you show for your pattern drafting, I’ve been wanting to try having a go myself for a while but haven’t had the guts to give it a go. I feel more confident having a go having watched your videos so thank you!
Thank you Lesley!
Love it. I'd add a little bling (maybe a broach or dress clip thingy) onto the top of the flippy bit on the skirt for a dressier version
Wow, that skirt and jacket look spectacular together!
Thank you!
the perfect swoosh on a pencil skirt. Love it. :}
Thank you!
Once again, an enjoyable video. I like how you explain your rational for why you do things the way you do. Love the side swish.
Thank you Beth!
Brilliant idea to eliminate the side seam on the pencil skirt side. These skirts came out beautifully. I love the dramatic floop!
Thank you Flynn!
the green and gold eyeshadow + the necklace and the black dress 🥺 bianca u r killing me
My apologies 😅❤
You are JUST SO TALENTED! I love all of your videos!
Thank you Becky!
I absolutely agree about football. Love your work
Thank you!
Ummm, the staging on your intro! That snake on the wall is coming up perfectly from between your victory rolls! Well done! Also, awesome skirt! Crayola washable markers are great for sewing garments that you plan to wash because they completely wash out! Also, I use a white Derwent watercolour pencil to mark dark fabric all the time, it works so well and comes off really easily!
Thank you! Yes I can imagine watercolor pencils are perfect!
This is some lovely pattern manipulation, I did a similar thing to my favorite umbrella skirt pattern, These two are very similar, but all my floof is at the back. It hangs so nicely as a one seam skirt. I love the colors of these skirts! Happy Official Spoopy Season!
Thank you Michelle!
I imagine the kitties were banished while laying this out 😂 they would have loved helping. That orange 🧡
They are not allowed in the basement at all luckily for sewing 🧵
Poor babies 🤣
I feel like a broken record…. But I do love watching your channel and your georgous outfits each time👌👌👌 can’t wait for real spooky season and what you have in store👻👻👻👻👻💕💕💕💕
Thank you Patti!
The floopy swish of this skirt is truly stunning!
Thank you!
The one seam construction seems so logical to me! Beautifully made and fits. . . .amazing! Just Amazing!
Thank you!
U are one of my favorite people to watch when I do a sewing project
Thank you!
Absolutely LOVING the Halloweeny outfit! And I can't wait to see the complete Mandragora suit!
Thank you!
Watching you draft the skirt I thought of Madeline VNA I was masterful and I think that would be so beautiful if you attach the bodice and made a dress oh what about a double Draper drape on either side I’d love to see you draft that and I would love to see you become a part of no me patterns sensational
love the fall colors, the flow, and the shimmer!☺
Thank you Marcco!!
Once again very nice. I like both of them, the orange one does bring out the bats on your jacket❤
Thank you Stacie!
OK. Off topic, but that green necklace is PERFECT! It is my ideal style of necklace.
Thank you! I picked it up on etsy searching "1950's necklace set" 😅✨
@@TheClosetHistorian thanks for the search tip 😁 now I can dive down the rabbit hole lol.
I think I need my own blue patterning table of doom
Wonderful job!! I’ve been making circular belly dance skirts for eons and to get the 45 spots of the hem facing to hang exactly the same as the skirt and perfectly evenly, run a basting stitch along the top edge, the edge you will hand stitch down to create the hem, of the facing and just pull the bobbin thread tight, no puckers or gathers. Use an awl to pull it every 6” or so and it will make the easing to match the 45 of the skirt perfect. For me the stitches are much more evenly spaced than my brain can make it and it takes less time to just push the fabric around ever so slightly than try to convince it to lay flat on its own.
If the 45’s are the same there’s no rippling of the hem as it moves.
You do amazing things! I love your videos!
You kill me you make such beautiful things. If I could just lose 10 more pounds I’m gonna go back to the beginning of you showing how to do things and start making outfits. I will wait for your stuff to come out. Beautiful
Thank you!
Love this skirt! I’m going to examine it in closer detail once I’ve got my block pattern done. I was particularly intrigued by the lining. I would love to see a video on lining (or a series on different lining techniques😁 for skirts, dresses, sleeveless dresses, etc.). Please oh please!!!
Thank you Linda!
You always seem to have the best timing! Somehow you consistently put out a video about something I'm working on or daydreaming about! I've been puzzling over how to add some fullness to a skirt without pleating it (because the fabric is thick) and couldn't quite picture how some of the pattern ideas I had would work. In comes Bianca with the answers!
I'm excited for you to buy your own place, I can't wait to see how you decorate it!
Thank you Jane! Me too really ✨
So lovely as always, gotta love a humongous pattern piece. I'll definitely be trying this one!! Love it! 💚🖤🧡
Thank you! Yes the pattern is unwieldy for sure 😂
oh the green skirt is simply dreamy! and random perhaps but your voice is always so pleasing and relaxing to listen to haha
Thank you!
I've been distracted thinking about how to do a back swish instead of on the side like 1940s does Edwardian and I think the answer is just do extra back panels and pleat it like a walking skirt, it'll be easier
Very pretty 😀
Thank you Jenn!
Your narrative are just hilarious. The skirts and jacket are stunning.
Thank you!
I am not sorry, but at 4:15 I was laughing to myself about how big and floopy your pattern was for you to manage :'D
Fair and factual ✨
Those skirts are so pretty. I was a little concerned that so much swish might be a bit much but it’s marvellous, and a delight with the jacket!! Cant wait for the silk jacket!😊
Thank you Pauline!
A little bit like does anyone wearing a crinoline resist jumping up and down there's a need to swish when wearing anything that has a train! Even if that train is on the side!! I see what you mean about the heft of the pumpkin one - the slightly thicker lining does give a sumptuous look to that poly fabric. The green is beautiful too but not quite as much heft! Looking forward to seeing the jacket.
For some reason, Grandma taught me to French seam just about everything to finish seams. I need to figure out felling still.
Love this skirt 😍 I need to try and sew my own
Thank you! Do ittttt! 🧵
I love this skirt in both colors. I wish I could wear a skirt like that.
Thank you Melody!
Beautiful! I love both of them!
Thank you!
Beautiful!
Thank you Caireen!
Both are very elegant. 🌻🍄
Thank you!
11:27 @theclosethistorian you are getting real technical here with the fabric behavior jargon, it's going over my head here! Flomp?... Phlomp?......
I love the swish!!!!
Thank you Liz!
I am loving how this is turning out!! So excited to see the beading!!
Thank you Beth!
watching you hem the skirt was so helpful because I made a circle skirt out of this lovely fleece fabric and interlined it with some (cheap) lining fabric, but I've been worried about how to hem it. Thank you!
I always hem curved things with bias, clean and very satisfying! ✨
Yay so pretty and swishy
This one was mind altering pattern origami!
I find that I suddenly have a need for a swishy skirt in my life . Thanks to creating my own pencil skirt block (a la C.H.herself) I think I can play around with the back and have my own swish following me. .
Thank you Valerie! You can certainly add flare to the back!
You look stunning
Thank you Vicky!
So beautiful! I can't wait to see the jacket. I know it's going to be amazing!
Thank you Kathryn!
Beautiful!! I love the swish when you turn around! I like your seam backed tights. Do you know about Secrets in Lace? They make authentic tights and other vintage inspired lingerie.
Thank you!
Love this skirt!
Thank you Lesli!
I feel the pain of the missing black muslin with other stuff in my sewing dungeon😂
so swooshy! Love it! 😍
Thank you Kaz!
Beautiful skirt, I love it.
Thank you Laurie!
Gorgeous. You are amazing!!!
Thank you Cathy!
Outstanding design !!! 💖Oh, how I just love this skirt style !!! Magnificent Job !!! 💖 Speaking of Magnificent, your Victory Rolls are so stunningly lovely. 💖I failed to mention them last week, (sorry about that). 😸 The Batty Back Jacket just dominated my brain. 😻 All of us with Creative Minds, have the ability to just skip mundane details such as "placing ointment on a little scratch." Plus the fact, what if that ointment got on that gorgeous silk? Travesty, it would be. 🙀 I am sorry the kitties are being so rambunctious with you. Enjoy it, because it seems they lose their love of rough-housing way too soon, for my taste. 😻 I hope you will do another video of how you do your eye shadow because I wish to attempt it myself to dazzle some fussy people I know. 😹 Do you know if the eye shadow would remain beautiful during a motorcycle ride while wearing safety shades and a half helmet? 😺
Thank you Dolores!!
I am going to make one of those skirts it looks terrific
Thank you Trudi!
You seem to be missing a silver-topped black cane to complete the orange skirt and Batty jacket outfit. Yes?
Will you do some get ready with you videos so that I can steal your eyeshadow looks?
😂 One day!
Thank you very much!!! It was really interesting!! xXX
