    As a Romanian, I was wondering when Dacia or any other car manufacturer would build a BASIC electric car, that is JUST a freaking car! I don't need AI, I don't need self-driving, I need a car to take me from point A to point B! That is all! I just now find out they did it! Well done!

  • @bfunieru

    I actually own one (I'm from Romania). Here it was dirt cheap - 8000 EURO after all incentives. I agree with the review - it is very good for city driving. Minor drawbacks are: cannot charge from 3phase A/C, can use only one phase. Thus, if you're connected to a 20Kw AC charging station it charges with only 6.6 kwh which means long charging times (3hrs from 20% to 80%). Real range is around 170 km winter - 200 km summer, city driving. Other minor negative aspects: driver cannot control rear electric windows, no light in the trunk nor glovebox, no armrest. Apart from this, it is an excellent workhorse for daily driving.

    • @jur4x
      @jur4x 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Lack of three-phase is a problem for continental Europe in general. In my house, for example, it is easier to provide 11KW charging on 3-phase rather than dedicate a single phase to 7KW.

      What a shame. Twice the range of my Smart Fortwo but little more than half the power. There's absolutely no point in that range if the car won't reach motorway cruising speeds. Cutting the range to 80 miles to save weight and cost would make even more sense for a city car.

    I live in France and after watching this video have rented a Dacia Spring from my local supermarket (E Leclerc) for 5€/day plus 20c/km. It’s on my driveway right now and I agree 100% with this review - if I want one long term Renault will let me take it home for 89€/mth for four years - no down payment!!! And if I add another 20€/mth I can use a Renault Scenic ICE car for up to 30 days a year with no km limit!!! It’s a killer proposition meaning you can do all your long journeys in a Scenic and use the Spring for all the in town journeys. And I like driving it, a lot. My other car is a VW Polo - I’m just about to pay to have the clutch replaced then I’m selling it and renting a Spring. The cash from selling my Polo will pay off my credit cards and the rent for the Spring is half of the current monthly card payments - so who cares that I won’t own the car in 4 years time, the depreciation on the Polo was higher, and the savings on my credit cards more than pay for it anyway :-) I hope you can get it in the UK too!!

    6:55 About the "space for four adults". In a (sub-)compact car like this, it is perfectly normal for the front occupants to move their seats a bit (driver) or quite a bit (passenger) forward to help accommodate the third and fourth passengers in those rare occasions where four equally sized adults actually travel in such a car at the same time. So evaluating the rear seat space with the front seats in the "normal" position is slightly beside the point.

    • @deanchur
      @deanchur 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most people I know with small cars use them as 2-seaters with emergency seats, which is what they really are. With my normal driving position in my Fiesta the seat behind me is unusable, which is fine because in all the time I've owned the car I've never had someone sit in them.

    REALLY enjoyed that! Jack Scarlett has done a magnificent job here - informative, amusing, sensible! I honestly think that if I won untold millions on some lottery I would be reasonably happy with a Dacia Spring! I have little to no interest in rapid acceleration and spend 90% of my time in cities. I must admit - given the lottery win premise - I would have something (still EV) different for out of city journeys, holidays etc.
    I once hired a new Ferrari in the 90's thinking it would be great for a holiday in Cornwall: I sat in crawling traffic jams on the M5 for many, many hours, then was scared sh**less in narrow lanes with granite walls close by. Since that week, anything that moves was more than good enough, equal to or better than a Ferrari. I have no intention of having anything "fancy". A Ford Fiesta does the same job just as well.

      Same here, it took its sweet time doing so, but it easily got to 120 km/h. It didn't really feel confidence-inspiring on the motorway, but for other roads it's sufficient. I didn't really like it though. Too narrow, my arm was touching the B pillar. The steering wasn't smooth at all, no heat pump for heating, lots of road noise in the cabin. I honestly think getting a 3 year old Ioniq, Zoe or Leaf for about the same price is a much better deal. subsidies on new BEVs may still get the price to a level where it may be worthwhile.

      That’s the problem. The Govt don’t want us plebs in this car. They’re striving to take car ownership away from the ordinary citizen. They want us on bicycles and rented e-scooters (the dangerous latter at obnoxious rental prices). You get the distinct impression the Government’s view is - only the rich elite should be able to afford expensive electric vehicles (with a tax break incentive to boot), the rest of us should ride steeply priced public transport or a bicycle (or walk in the gutters) - and be grateful. Basically, we should own nothing and be happy…..!!!!! Don’t be surprised if they prevent this car from being sold here……or introduce something as cruel as battery rental….!!!

      I think that’s exactly why they don’t give such rebates. The premium stuff i believe have larger profit margins, so the carmakers can turn a profit while paying taxes and what not. Basically, governments will have more money in their pocket to spend on other things, if car makers sell the higher end stuff. Cheap stuff like this Dacia, the price is so low, most don’t need rebates, plus being an EV, if you charge it well, you’ll recover that costs over a Sandero quite quickly i’d imagine. Finally a car review that makes sence, and about a car (and the brand) I adore. When my current Sandero will have reached the retirement age it will be for sure the Spring. As you very well said, this is all that most people actually need. It gets you where you need to go 99% of the time. My company car was a Ford Grand C-max with loads of space. It wasn't my choice (I was kinda forced to "choose" it) and I hated it for its size and total disabillity to easily move around in cities and certain shopping mall carparks. Sure it came in handy when I need to go for the full 1,5 times a year to Ikea but the rest of the time I was eating my steering wheel out of frustration. Give me small cars any time, even you're a household of 4 to 5 people. My parents did that, actually most parents from my generation had to do that beceause big cars weren't affordable untill the mid eighties and later. By then every thing got screwed in the car industry where everything had to grow bigger by every new model generation. Not speaking about the amount of utterly useless crapp called "luxury option", better know as gadgets you will use 1,5 times in the entire car lifespan and is mainly aimed at bragging about it with your neighbor or girlfrien (which of course doesn't give a damn).
    The only thin I miss is a proper charging network, certainly in cities and small villages (it totally lacs in hell whole Belgium where I'm from).

    I loved my inexpensive, 3-cylinder, 4-speed manual 1987 Suzuki Forsa. It definitely was not fast but it was adequate for where I live. I've been looking for a basic electric car and I think the Dacia Spring is it. It has about the same horsepower (Dacia-44 vs Suzuki-49.) It looks like it's the same size too. I guess like many people, I've been waiting for a reasonably priced electric car. Cost is much more important to me than huge acceleration or huge range, so the spec is more than adequate for me.
    The bottom line is that if this was available in right hand drive, here in the UK, my search for the right electric car would be at an end. I hope that Dacia will decide that there are potentially millions of UK drivers waiting for a reasonably priced electric car to be brought to market.

And of course finally I have bought one as a little family car (not 2nd car) at least for a few years. If I will want to go on holidays I will go by plane. Or anytime I can rent a bigger car once a year. It's a few thousand euros cheeper car then the cheapest petrol one so I can afford it from the price difference. Not to mention that practically I can travel for free all year long. It is cheaper then public transportation. I've had a Spring on loan for a couple of weeks while Dacia try to track down a battery fault in my brand new Sandero Stepway. I live in Ibiza and it would be perfect if I didn't live in an apartment and the nearest public charging point wasn't 20 minutes walk away. The Spring keeps making me think 'new 2CV'. It's got the same sort of practicality. The narrow wheels cope well with unsurfaced roads although the suspension's a little unforgiving. You really notice speed humps and cobbles. It does feel a little flimsy and my only complaint with the controls is that some of them are below my eyeline such as the aircon and heated rear window. That could be because, as I understand it, this is basically a rebadged Chinese car and I'm a little taller than they are in the far east. As I say, if I had access to charging I'd buy one rather than the Stepway

    This is a great review of a great car. I did a test drive a month ago and I was impressed as well. It is dead slow and the range is not fantastic, but everything else is just perfect for a car this cheap. And it drives well, it is very comfortable and silent. If you want to get from A to B in a city, you should shortlist this one.
    The only thing I am really afraid of, is an electric Kia Picanto (or EV1 for that matter) if they every decide to make one. The current Kia Picanto (or Hyundai i10) is much better than everything else in it's class, if there is every going to be an electric version, it will be better than this Spring. A few bad things : no control of rear windows from the front, no lamp in trunk, only 2 seatbelts in the back and not the best at handling ... Had a few scares in the countryside at first.
