******IMPORTANT PLEASE READ****** Here's some quick thoughts about the practice of using alloy pellets for testing airguns. Good / Bad / Doesn't Matter?? For all those that say alloy pellets are a gimmick to increase velocity claims... I want to let you all know that I feel the exact same way. However, we can keep complaining about it, or we can learn to work around it, as companies are not going to change the way they are doing it these days. Here's what we know: * Are alloy pellets accurate - generally not * Are alloy pellets stable - nope * Is shooting above the sound barrier practical for accuracy with alloy, or any pellet? - nope.. not really * Does accuracy need to be considered when testing for baseline velocity - NO So why do they use alloy pellets for testing velocity? That's easy, it gives them the biggest numbers. Here's something to consider. When I test with lead pellets, I generally use RWS Hobby pellets which are wadcutter pellets. They are not that accurate either. So velocity testing isn't really about accuracy. It's about VELOCITY and establishing a baseline for velocity and energy. To do this you must use the same projectile in all your testing and you need to know the weight. I use RWS Hobbies, Gamo uses their Platinum PBA ammo, both have a known weight. Here's another thing to consider. A lot of manufacturers specify "up to" velocity with "alloy" pellets. Do they tell you which one, how much it weights? Not generally so they are really telling you nothing at all. At least Gamo identifies the actual pellet used for testing. It's very light, terribly inaccurate, BUT we do have a grain weight to go by which establishes a baseline of performance. What other manufacturer puts that on the box? So we have a baseline of 1520+/- with the Gamo Magnum shooting 4.7 grain Platinum PBA ammo = 24.12 FPE at the muzzle. Since Gamo uses that same pellet on all their break barrels, whether we like their choice or not, it does give us an actual baseline for performance, something that other manufacturers fail to provide. So if we look at Gamo's offerings these days we see: 1200, 1250, 1350, 1400, 1450, and now 1650 (.177 class with alloy pellets and I'm sure I may have missed a few numbers there) if you are looking for a product to meet specific power outputs, you can use these numbers to dial in to which product is going to best suit your needs. It's not a perfect system, but it is a system, and it's actually better than what most other manufacturers are providing their customers. Again, don't get me wrong, I would never shoot PBA Platinum ammo for anything practical, and never for hunting. But if it's the pellet they use to establish their baseline velocity and energy numbers, then it does its job in the same way the RWS Hobby pellets do when I test with lead pellets. I hope this is helpful. Cheers AGW
Totally understandable. I was really wondering though if it chews up the lead pellet?? I think that would be most people's concern about an air rifle of that speed.
Hard to imagine sending a 177 caliber 1500 feet per second. I just watch as they tumble out of the gun into the target and sometimes not even hit the target. Trying to keep accuracy with this magnum becomes argous. I do understand were on the breaking edge of technology but Gamo boasts a lot of bullcrap do the math and weight not. Just blow 15 bucks on some pba platinums and you be ready to throw the gun away.
Jerry.. none of us here are advocating buying or using PBA ammo. Gamo's platinum PBA and their gold PBA is just terrible stuff. If you want accuracy, use lead ammo (generally speaking, as there are some great new non-lead options coming out) and the heavier varieties seem to make the most of these magnum springers. The point my comment above, was to state and point out that while the platinum PBA is pretty much worthless for target shooting or hunting, it does work to get a baseline velocity and power output. Because Gamo uses the same pellet across the board for their baseline testing, it is an accurate guide for that purpose. And, Gamo's really the only manufacturer that I'm aware of that advertises what pellet was used for their "up to" velocity testing. Cheers, AGW
The whisper series makes this gun look bad. Your sending a 177 caliber pellet at 1500 feet accurately I bet your not. This magnum is finicky when it comes to pellets if your shooting a 7.4 grain crossman sounds like 22 and will not hold a group period sloppy as can be including the crossman 10.5 domed no groups but a little better than the lighter pellets.so right now i'm stuck with this gun desperately seeking a good pellet to make a group, any suggestions would be awesome. I do pest control on honey crisp apple ranches and have 2 Gamo whisper elites and can tap birds at 50 yards they fly off so I was figuring the magnum could knock em down at 60 in the right conditions. For pest control any of the whispers seem to be the best ever I have bagged over 800 starlings figuring to improve with the gamo 177 magnum is certainly a pipe dream.
I know this vid is old, but how do they figure that is best for pesting and plinking instead of hunting? I have a .177 gamo magnum and i have a .22 wildcat whisper. The .177 shits on the wildcat for penetration and raw power, plus is just as accurate. So explain to me why the weaker wildcat is marked as a hunting rifle and the stronger .177 magnum is marked for plinking.
They classify hunting guns by caliber, I.e. .22 for hunting and .177 for plinking. There will be overlap when you take a standard power .22 and compare it to a magnum power .177. The .22 Gamo magnum will run circles around the .177 magnum for power, range, and accuracy. Cheers AGW
Wow, salty much or is this just Paul's alt account? First off Gamo is not at all high-end but that is not their market either but "junk"? How is Aaron arrogant? (will leave out the name calling out) Gamo has gotten much better and for under $200 everyone is about the same quality at those price points. SO what are you shooting that is so much better than anything Aaron at shot? If you say any brand made in the US that is not a PCP then you are full of yourself. As a under $200 springer Gamo are just fine, so are Hatsan and I would trust both over Crossman / Benjamin or Daisy any day...
What good is the 1500 fps if you can't hit target with such a light pellet? It also is too loud for use in most back yards. Why do these manufacturers always sell velocity instead of accuracy with knock down power? Velocity over 1000 fps is useless if you cant hit what your aiming at. They should just say the true velocity of the pellets your more likely to use for accuracy, which are going to be much heavier than those allow pellets and the velocity would be much less than stated to sell their product.
We did the first look of the .22 as well. It's on my channel page. Also, we are taking these up to the north rim with us and will be looking at them in more detail there. cheers AGW
For sure.. the 10.3 JSBs are shooting really well out of it. We'll be taking this and the .22 out to the range next week for some more in depth target practice. Still breaking in on these. They are very difficult to cock. Not for light target shooting for sure. Cheers AGW
+Expert Airgun Reviews / AirgunWeb / AirgunWebTV yes yes this the one I've been waiting on please review the 22 cal 4 hunting...watching airgun web while hurricane hermine passing through...this wind & rain is crazy
You can keep asking.. but it's not going to help us get it done any sooner. We've been out of town for about 3 weeks. We have a lot of footage to go through. Maybe by the end of the month we can get it done. Cheers AGW
gimmicky junk. pellets going that fast loose accuracy. this gun was literally built for people who dont know any better and see a bigger number on the shelf at walmart.
I think this guy's is so boring no offence I am fan of your channel and I don't think I missed an episode but man do I not like this guy's reviews might be all the right stuff but and specs but dam
Edwin - thanks for your feedback. This is Aaron's 2nd video. He will continue to improve as we find the right rhythm. The point of these videos is to very quickly show basic features and out of the box performance numbers. Folks have been asking for hard data, even basic data, on this product since SHOT back in January. If I can have help in the studio to preview these while we work on the full reviews, then it creates more content, and gets the raw data to folks that only want to know the numbers. Aaron will get better with time. It took me years to get the hang of things and I'm still learning. Cheers, AGW
Yeah Rick, Maybe folks should go back and look at some of your earliest videos and have a good laugh. You've gotten much better with time and I'm sure Aaron will do the same. I for one have no issues with him, he speaks well and has a good demeanor. The only way to get me to focus more on the host verses the guns is if you put a swimsuit model on your program. Say, that's not a bad idea!
Thanks for the kind words.. I've floated the whole swimsuit model concept a few times but my wife still objects.. just not sure what the problem is there! Oh well.. Cheers! AGW

I've not found that an issue. My plan is to shoot the heavy JSB and the heavy H&N pellets for testing accuracy. We'll see how it goes.

To make matters worse I purchased a 169,00 dollar hawke scope and the gamo 177 caliber magnum ate it in 20 rounds come apart internally as I watched
How stable is a .177 pellet at that velocity???

Hi. I like this rifle but such accuracy (.177) at high speeds. I appreciate a response
The way you get accuracy from this is to use heavier pellets.
