Well an easy thing to say/see is he sings like he thinks of his voice like a trumpet and in a similar range and feel to his lines. (I have to shoot later, for the key, but won't because of gratitude for your transcription(s))
@@paulgibby6932 I agree. I didn't analyze the notes, but he seems to scat in the same style and level of detail that he blows. Really impressive. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that he played what he heard. This is quite the demonstration of it.
Have been listening to this version of Just Friends a short while ago - what a coincidence! Indeed, Chet's melodicism is something musicians can all learn from.
I believe that's the reason why his solos sounds very melodic and organic. While there are some common bebop phrases, the solos aren't conceived from patterns or theory. Ultimately, to make something sound very musically, you'll need to trust your ear and intuition, and Chet was full of it. There is video with Flea (from RHCP) when Chet sings the melodies of Daahoud and Joy Spring. That's the way he ingrained the jazz sound in his ear and that's what's eventually comes up in theses solos you transcribed. Thanks for the clip!
Many yrs ago I studied w an older sax player that recorded w Chef in Italy..there where charts and a couple songs Chet didn't know at all and the changes where rough...so Chet says just play it listens they play if one more time he jams on it then they record and my teacher said it was insanely great, melodic on some real hard charges so later they had some drinks and dinner and he says to Chet...what chord scale did u play in so and so change and Chet says Wtf is a chord scale and he laughed and everyone was like....shit...unreal player
I love Chet's music, so thank very much for this video. He was such a beautiful soul filled with passions and demons. May he rest in peace, as he deserves. May I recommend you a very nice cover done by an Argentine actor/musician called Alfredo Casero? You can find it by searching "Alfredo Casero - I remember you", here in TH-cam. The trumpet solo was in charge of "Gillespie" (the Argentine one, Marcelo Rodriguez 😅) and the bassist was Javier Malosetti, another monster. I shall warn you that the entire album was made in a comedy key (rioplatense humor), nevertheless, it has many wonderful tracks. Hope you like and enjoy it.

The music school makes everyone do that. Teachers make you do it too. I just play what I feel and sometimes it doesn't sound so good. I don't know what the notes are in relation to the chords. So sue me.
"you should be able to sing what you play" is a very standard type of advice in jazz education and whilst it's a great motto, I don't think many people really can do it. And, at least not as well as Chet Baker ever could hoppe that helps putting it in context Jorre
Chet could play the trumpet like he was scatting and vice versa. Some people can shred, but it doesn’t really feel organic. Chet’s lines feel natural true, unlike some who can only shred and don’t have the feel. It is all a bit vague haha.

Trumpet is pitched in Bb, a whole step lower than the written music it plays from.
