    This one is a shining example of Keith Moon's brilliant insanity. His drumming was absurdly active, but that's absolutely crucial to the very core of the song.

      There was a guy on TV talking about Keith Moon's playing. He said it was the same as a guitar player switching from right handed playing to left handed. I don't know what that means but I was impressed.

      @@robertcoates6800 I think it means that you have to think a lot (maybe too much) about what you are doing when playing along to what amounts to a "click track". In other words, you can't just be yourself, you have to totally conform to an external standard of timing. Another example for a guitarist would be playing in time with a delay or tremolo.

      In my ignorant youth (I'm early 50's now), I totally did not get The Who. Now? Good lord. Their legendary status is well deserved and "Love Reign O'er Me" is Exhibit A. Perfection. A Masterpiece in every sense of the word.

    The most iconic yell that defines rock n roll. Roger teases it and then just lets it rip. Keith basically plays one long fill and Pete has that classical ear of knowing how to add all the right sounds. And John just holds it all together. A work of art.

      @@28if It's a lowrey organ which was then run through an arp synth. The organ makes all the actual sound but the synth modified it with filters such as changing the frequencies coming through and stopping and starting the sound in quick succession

      I was watching a doc on them and someone (I think a music journalist ...and fan) described them as 4 guys that played like they were each in a different band lol. I think that’s what made them great. They each had a strong musician personality and style. I also like that their fashion senses are completely different. When the whole band looks like the same it can look like they’re wearing a uniform .

He was standing with another Blazer Wally Walker and turned around and my friend offered. He smiled and said “ah...no thanks....dude...lol...we could see the stage which was elevated quite well. A great concert and Keith was still alive....

    Your reaction to “Baba O’Riley” was literally the reason I started watching you! He used a Lowery organ through an EMS something or another synthesizer. No one had ever really used this in this way before and he had to teach himself how to use it as there was no one out there who could teach him. Pete Townsend was a total Pioneer and is an absolute Legend! This band was composed of 4 Legendary performers. Keith Moon, John Entwistle, Roger Daltrey, & Pete Townsend. 🎶💪

      Just a small FYI ... Pete's last name is spelled, "Townshend." Just like the Townshend Act from the late 1700s that helped get colonists stirred up to start a revolution. Hmmmm ... wonder if there is a blood relationship ? 🤔 (Also, spellcheck kept trying to change it back to Townsend.)

      You'd think so. But that iconic scream that you're talking about is missing from his reaction as it actually comes straight after the organ solo, a few seconds after 13.18, He misses the end of the song by a long way. The one you heard at 9.01 although great, is too early in the song. This is my all time favourite song and has been for 50 years.

    A little trivia for you. At one time The Who was listed as the loudest band in rock n roll. They were also one of the first bands to sign on for the Concert for New York City....charity concert after 9/11. Lastly, if you really want to get a sense of the band watch the 1979 concert movie The Kids are Alright.

    The instrument is a "Sequencer", an early form of a synthesizer. You should check out "Young Man Blues" Live at the Isle of Wight or try "Love Reign o'er Me" two epic songs, in different ways.

    “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss...” timeless. That lyric is just so TIMELESS. Because it’s so f’ng true, especially now. Could exalt about the insanely brilliant musicianship, vocals, lyrics and composition, or tell you that it’s a synthesizer 😂. But others on here already have so I’ll just write it’s hard now to love The Who. I certainly do. Then. Now. Always. ❤️

    Pete Townsend used a synthesizer with a tape loop so he didn't have to play it on stage. They were four brilliant musicians. Drummer Keith Moon died young but he was unique.

    Have I listened to a group I know is good? I veer away and hear a new song that reminds me they are on another level? Yeah. The Who, Love Reign O'er Me. I've always enjoyed The Who and while they are not my favorite band, Love Reign O'er Me is a real aural pleasure.

    THE WHO has put out a lot of great songs over a long career, but my favorite era is their early live stuff. My Generation from their Live at Leeds album is a straight up banger all the way thru. Or if you want to see them play live, check out Amazing Journey/ Sparks 1975 - Keith Moon is a mad man on the drums.

      Another great one that I don't think I've ever seen anyone react to is "Pure And Easy". In my opinion, if Pure and Easy had made it onto the original Who's Next album it would have been in the same league as Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again. Hard to believe a song as amazing as Pure And Easy ended up on the cutting room floor when Who's Next was released. Thankfully they included it on the Odds and Sods album.

    I saw the Who live, twice in the 70s. It was a thrill to see Roger Daltrey come from the wings and leap across the stage while screaming "yeeeeeeeeeeahhhhhh!" right near the end of the end of the song. Followed the truest words ever uttered in rock and roll, "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

      Pete drove the basic rhythm and pace of the music which allowed keith and john to flow musically and explore the backing sounds. Thats why there isnt a standard bass/drum drive to their music. I am a old school who fan love all their stuff

    My Generation! An early Who song, love that one. The Who rocked Woodstock, the 60s concert in a NY farmer’s fields. They played at dawn Saturday morning. Imagine hearing Tommy, as you wander among 400,000 concert mates in the rain!
