Good to be on board ,Biz .The Who is my all-time favorite band ...Seen them seven times, first with Keith Moon on drums in 75/.This one a show-stopper.
"The Real Me" from their album _Quadrophenia_ will knock you outta your seat. The bass alone is unbelievable, the drums are an attack, and the song as a whole redefines "groove."
One of the most iconic rock songs of the 70’s, by one of the greatest rock bands of all time. And this song shows the incredible talents of every single member. There has never been another voice with the power of Roger Daltrey. I’ve loved them since I discovered their rock opera Tommy almost 50 years ago! And this song just never gets old.
The part where it picks up again after the last break with Keith Moon going crazy on the drums then Daltry's scream is my favorite part. Got to see them do this live twice in the mid '80s . Thanks, Biz. Great insights in the lyrics.
YES!! More The Who!!👏👏 Before I get into ur rxtn, I just want u to know they have 2 lead singers.😉 Roger Daltrey (singing this song) and secondary lead singer is Pete Townshend (co-founder, lead & rhythm guitarist). They're both phenomenal!! Now, the thing with a lot of song lyrics is, no matter what Era/generation they were written in.... they're usually still relevant decades later.😉 Lyrics are written by human beings and stem from how they're feeling in a moment. But, even though the lyrics may've been inspired by something specific.... the feelings are UNIVERSAL and can be felt in any given time, year, moment or situation! That's the power of music.... it transcends time, race, religion, social class etc....🤗 K, my vote for the next Who song is "Love Reign O'er Me".... that song is amazing on so many levels!! Great reaction and glad ur liking these guys!!😎 See ya on the next one....💕
It's funny to me how much we think alike! The lyrics make me think of current times.I think you would like one of the live videos with Keith Moon going nuts on drums!
They were all about being loud. Marshall's was a local music store in West London. Pete and John DEMANDED that they make stacked speakers, They invented Marshall Stacks, and that's why Marshall's is now an iconic international business. The Who had the BEST sound system in the business. Two years in a row, the Isle of Wight music festival ( second one bigger than woodstock) had to use the Who sound system for the festival. When they weren't touring they rented out the sound system to other bands. I remember hdaring radio ads for a concert , and at the end of that ad, they said, in a low voice ... And they're using Who sound system.
Keep n mind when this song was released - the height of the Vietnam War, back in 1971. We die repeat ourselves, by getting in a conflict that we had no business getting in . We went from the Korean War right into Vietnam. Th song is praying that we won’t get fooled again and enter another unwinnable war. That’s that my take, anyway. Keep up the excellent work.
So while those American conflicts were not irrelevant...meanwhile, back in England where the Who was from, they were dealing with a massive advancing shift in their economy with industry, coal, etc., on the way out. They had their own youth movements going on, particularly with anti-nukes etc. Meanwhile the "New Left" which was coming up after the old left of the post-WWII was on the way out. (The parting on the left is now parting on the right..."). I think Doris Lessing actually writes very well of that period in England.
Very perceptive Biz. Each generation does define or redefine morals. For example, the world I was born into rejected gay marriage and interracial marriage as immoral.
"I'll pick up my guitar and play, just like yesterday " cause ant nothing changed, we go on day by day no matter what happens. These lyrics are really deep but its so easy to just get lost in the base and drums . RIP Keith Moon :(
What I like about your reactions are that you take on and give an honest and interesting interpretation of the lyrics. I do not think it is easy to do that on first listen. I also love to see the pleasure you are getting out of these classic tunes. Thanks man. 🙂
Great to see you reacting to The Who again, Biz. Especially as you really like the parts where they really cut loose and just start free-wheeling. You should hear (and see) some of their live material from this period. "Young Man Blues" (LIVE AT LEEDS or ISLE OF WIGHT), "See Me, Feel Me" (Woodstock), "The Real Me" (QUADROPHENIA), "Sparks" (Woodstock), "Water" (ISLE OF WIGHT), "Magic Bus" (LIVE AT LEEDS). Loving your reactions, Biz. Particularly Zeppelin, The Who, and Bon era AC/DC. I think you would like a lot of Stones stuff. Particularly their first dozen years or so. Up until the mid 1970's.
Loved the music in this song when I was young, unfortunately I did not pay attention to the fantastic lyrics which was cemented with the final lyrics " Meet The New Boss Same As The Old Boss "
So yeah, I LOVE this song. Fun to watch people hear that last yell for the first time. Those effin drums! [I've never known anyone to be underwhelmed by the vocals! Dang. I feel old.] ... Background on the song............So when the song came out, while the US was dealing with VietNam, Civil Rights Movement etc., back in England they were dealing with a massive advancing shift in their economy with industry, coal, etc., on the way out. They had their own youth movements going on, particularly with anti-nukes etc. Meanwhile the "New Left" which was coming up after the old left of the post-WWII was on the way out and it was not a friendly shift. ("The parting on the left is now parting on the right..."). Etc., etc.
The 3 greatest rock bands (IMO) were Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Rolling Stones. In that order (IMO). The singer for The Who didn't contribute much to the instrumentation. The other 3 members of the band were mainly responsible. Pete Townshend (songwriter, guitar and synthesizer), Keith Moon (drummer) and John Entwistle (bass and keyboards). The singer is Roger Daltrey.
THE WHO, "WE WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN". MY FAVORITE SONG BY THIS BAND. ... MORE "REIGN ON ME", "THE REAL ME", "WHO ARE YOU?", "MY WIFE", "BORIS THE SPIDER ". "SQUEEZE BOX"..."YOUNG MAN BLUES" "THE SEEKER"
It's about overthrowing the existing powers and put new leaders in charge with new laws and then hope those new leaders won't do the same things as the one who came before.
Check out "The Relay" . Pete predicted the internet in 1971 I always feel like Pete Townshend and The Who were always the loudest, but never really listened to lyrically. But he's lived to see the relevance appreciated.
Politics is a cyclical process. You vote based on promises. You (sometimes) believe them, hoping things improve, hoping you haven't been fooled. You carry on.... . (You've been fooled)
Come on you've surely watched CSI? A very blatant in your face anti war song was sung at Woodstock by Country Joe and the Fish. You tube is the only place I can find it. It's called the Vietnam Song.
Who fans love Daltrey's vocals. I'm a fan, but don't consider Daltrey's vocals to be the reason to listen to the Who. He fits the band and he fits their music. His delivery is powerful when the song needs some power, but he is oddly frequently off-key and not quite hitting an intended note. As is typical with fervent fans, this is viewed as a feature, not a flaw, and an indication of how passionately he sings. A band known for destroying instruments at the end of concerts really shouldn't be fronted by a precise and sterile vocalist. I can't imagine anybody else singing these classic Who songs.
Greatest line in any rocknroll song " Meet The New Boss Same As The Old Boss "

YES! it's INSANE!

I saw The Who in concert in 1970, 1980 and 2019. They are my favorite live band.
Where did you see them in 1970?
The part where it picks up again after the last break with Keith Moon going crazy on the drums then Daltry's scream is my favorite part.
Got to see them do this live twice in the mid '80s .

The Ultimate Scream!
Lyrics just as relevant as the day they were written
Keith Moon was an epic drummer. He burned so bright, he couldn't last.

It's funny to me how much we think alike! The lyrics make me think of current times.I think you would like one of the live videos with Keith Moon going nuts on drums!
Yes, Love Reign O'er Me. Please do that for your next Who song.
I believe at one time they were known as the loudest band around. Every member was extremely talented. Keep up the good job
They were all about being loud. Marshall's was a local music store in West London. "Love Reign O're Me" is must :)

Thank you for being possibly the only REACTIONist who did a WHO song. ANY WHO song. Nice job!
What I like about your reactions are that you take on and give an honest and interesting interpretation of the lyrics. I do not think it is easy to do that on first listen. I also love to see the pleasure you are getting out of these classic tunes. Thanks man. 🙂

Your smile of delight said it all! Thank you!
You are welcome
I made it to the end ! I like when you're blown away. I know you like rap,but you get it.

One of my favorite songs thanks Biz I’m having fun
Robert Plant once said in an interview that Kashmir is the definitive Zeppelin song. Well, this is the definitive Who song.
Loved the music in this song when I was young, unfortunately I did not pay attention to the fantastic lyrics which was cemented with the final lyrics " Meet The New Boss Same As The Old Boss "
"I can see for miles" is greatly underrated. Put it on your to-do list!
They are so much fun to watch live
So yeah, I LOVE this song. Fun to watch people hear that last yell for the first time. Those effin drums! [I've never known anyone to be underwhelmed by the vocals! Dang. I feel old.]

Hi Biz
Fuck yeah
Magic Bus from Live at Leeds is fire,
Love it. Please consider checking out 'Love Reign O'er Me' and 'The Real Me' from their epic Quadrophenia album. You won't be disappointed!
Orwell 1984 in a song.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss It doesn’t matter who you vote for, you just get the same old shit
Come on you've surely watched CSI? A very blatant in your face anti war song was sung at Woodstock by Country Joe and the Fish. You tube is the only place I can find it. It's called the Vietnam Song.
Next Who song?
"Slip Kid"......
