People who say the 86 needs more power needs to watch this video. It's not about how fast your car is, it's about how good you drive. Real drivers can cut corners and know their car very well.
Speaking as a FRS driver, I feel like watching that... man if he had more power he would have passed the porsche. Not talking anything huge just like 20-30 more hp. Driver mod is real
Do you mean I am letting the clutch out too slow? Or do you mean I am hovering the foot over the clutch after letting the clutch out? Phrased differently: What do I have to correct? The shift itself or removing the foot faster after the shift? Thanks for the feedback. It's appreciated as I am still learning.
It appears you're keeping the clutch pedal depressed too long. You need to let off the clutch quicker. Entire point of a heel & toe is to help match the engine revs when downshifting, but if you blip the throttle and don't let off the clutch quickly enough to grab, it's basically redundant to even blip the throttle.
Okay I understand what you mean now. But in that case I think problem is not what you think. The clutch has to grab at the right matched rpm. And you can hear that happens (most of the times, again I am learning and no expert either :-). If I let the clutch out too late (with rpm dropped back down again), you would hear the engine rev twice: Once from the blip and once when when letting go of the clutch as the wheels would rev the engine up again, I have that in a lot in earlier video material because my timing was off. In the previous session I let the clutch out too fast in a couple of corners and the extra rpm propelled the car forward against my braking. The GT86 has a heavy flywheel from factory and the rpm rise and drop relatively slow. So it's a balance how much to blip and when to release the clutch to find the right rpm that suit the wheel/gear speed. Maybe an explanation for you thinking that it looks off could be that I blip the engine to a too high rpm, and subsequently have to wait for it to drop sufficiently before I can let the clutch go? I keep it in the back of my head next time I go for a drive and keep working on it. Thanks for the feedback.
Maybe your Tune could affect it too. I have a '13 BRZ, so I'm aware how the clutch grab is, but from my experiences, if I let off the clutch that slow (street or track), it'd upset the car. I guess it boils down to the feel and as long as you don't upset your car in the corners. I can't compare it without driving your car, but I've also seen other videos of heel & toe, and they typically are quicker. Do you heel&toe off the track too?
The engine is stock (the video from the dyno was just a measurement). I do heal and toe on the street too. Looking over the video again it seems like I release the clutch quite slowly, almost easing it in. There are more probably explanations: That I got more (too) careful after feeling the car being propelled forward in the previous session. It was quite significant going into a chicane where I was already a bit fast (psychology at work perhaps). Another explanation: I had to significantly alter my driving style for the day. Previous I was on Pirelli tires and the car would oversteer quite a bit, hence most braking done in a straight line, and on power through the curves. This day was the first on Yokohama AD08R (Extreme Performance tire category), and the car would plow if I did as above. So I had to carry more speed and brake into the curve to get the car to rotate. I.e. more stuff to do at the same time for my limited brain capacity and and with less margin for error. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, it's much appreciated. I will keep working on it and see if I can figure out exactly what is going on.
Yes the gear shifts are definitely off. If I may advise when upshifting you should lift your right foot quicker. When you press the clutch it shouldn't go higher in rpm. That's because you're right foot is still partially on the clutch. + just let the quite lazy boxer engine slow down to the exact rpm range before engaging the clutch. Regarding the heel toe you have to engage the clutch right after you tap the gas pedal so there's not fluctuation in the rpm range. Great to see you have fun with that super awesome car ! Caymans are also my favourite targets with the right tires at Spa :-) !
Thanks for the tips. My shifting (both up and down) has gotten even worse since I switched to another ECU tune (at least in my imagination that's the reason). And now I am super conscious about it which probably properly doesn't make it better. I need to stop thinking and "just do it". :-D
You don't have problem with the pedal electronic delay for execute heel and toe rev-match? I have an Auris 2010 and i hate the delay because It's very hard to execute heel and toe
The FR layout gives the GT86 a near 50-50 weight distribution and that makes it stand a chance against the mid-engined Cayman despite the massive power and torque difference. With a bit of tuning to the engine, maybe a supercharger and wide Michelin Cup 2's the GT86 becomes more lethal.
carolyne woods I don’t know because it could have been the novice driver. You should go to fastestlaps.com and compare these two and you’ll see that the Cayman totally CREAMS the GT86. Also, the Cayman is a near 50/50 weight distribution but then is it has a more powerful engine, which is why it creams it.
theburias I don’t know but the comparison tests were far and away, so it does not matter of the type of those tires because the Cayman’s engine is pretty powerful.
You are not actually getting any rev match since you don't release the clutch quickly enough...just saying. Possibly something to work on to further improve your driving skills

I learned a lot ( and still learning) from driving the GT86 as well. I get a lot of flak for my heal toe in some of the other comments. What they don't know is that I only started heal toeing a few months before making this video and it's only the 2nd time I was ever on a track. The 86 inspires to become a better driver, that's what's so special about it.
I cannot agree with you more .. it took me a while to learn to toe heel properly and actually I leaned I needed to brake later than normal and to just focus on rev matching into the entrance then it's all 86 design from there I'm my eyes
Man, you heel and toe are not perfect, you are sometimes a bit late with a clutch release in my opinion but you are not bad at all, especially considering time you've been practiced. Far better than me anyway, I can't do that at all in my car, too weird angle.
Speaking as an 86 owner (and loving it), but who has driven a Cayman, I have to say that Porsche driver must be a novice. The 86 is a great drive, and actually more fun on the road, but no way as quick in standard form as a Cayman.
And what about oil temperature ? I have seen on some forums that it was the problem of this car.. too hot too fast... need to calm down after 2 or 3 laps... (I am currently looking for a new car that's why the question)
Thanks for the tip. It was mention in some of the other comments too. The video is fairly old and only my 2nd time on a track as far as I recall. I think (hope :-) I improved since then. I uploaded a lot of videos since this was made.
Quick question, do you use the VSC sport button when you're tracking it? I find all it does in mine is act as a drift mode, I don't feel much difference in throttle response etc
VSC has no influence on engine response. I used VSC off in this video (push and hold TRC off for 5 seconds). This turn vehicle stability control completely off. In my later videos, I drive the car in a special diagnostics mode that turns the remaining features off, most importantly electronic brake force distribution which directs too much brake pressure to the front brakes for track work (note: completely unnecessary and no benefit when driving on the streets, I do it to avoid overheating the front brakes).
GT86 Dude oh well I feel silly now, I've just realised what VSC stands for and that sport must just half turn it off. The funny thing is I was sold it under the premise that the VSC sport would improve throttle response, and just being naive and a little ignorant I went along with it. That explains the tail happiness in the wet😂

Your heel-and-toe is fine, but the timing is not right. You are blipping the throttle too early and you are not even changing the gear at the same time. And you change the gear and release the clutch after blipping. This is not a proper rev match, as by the time you release the clutch, the revs have already dropped quite a bit and the engine still has to take some help from the wheels and clutch to match its RPM to the new gear. You should blip the throttle exactly at the same time while moving the shifter to a lower gear, and release the clutch just after completing these tasks.
I like the video setup you've got going, it makes it easy for us to point out your mistakes...Your heel and toe isn't good and you keep making the same mistake after the jacky ickx chicane; to late on the upshift. You might be better off taking all chicanes in 3rd gear instead of 2nd. First corner after start finish, use more off the track and take the corner in 4th gear.
This is an older one of my videos. This is with Pirelli Zero Nero GT 225x40R18 on 18x8 OZ Ultraleggera. I've since switched to Yokohama AD08R (same size). The Yokohama's are so super sticky, that I had to make setup changes to the suspension (alignment, swaybars, and dampers).

Why didn't he let you pass earlier then? You were faster in most corners. You even say "cmon man" or something. Of course everyone want his car in one piece.
But he was faster on the straights. So sometimes you need a few corners to settle who is faster overall and goes first. The "cmon" was because he was braking so early killing my corner speed, not because he didn't let me past. Of course, these "battles" do get competitive in nature and that's part of the fun. But in the end, either the one or the other should give way.
The Porsche smashes the GT86 in every way. It has a 2.7-litre engine versus the GT86's 2.0-litre engine, it will go from 0 - 62 mph in 5.7 seconds versus the GT86's 7.6 seconds, it has 271 bhp and 214 lb /ft of torque versus the GT86's 197 bhp and 151 lb /ft of torque, and the Cayman will top out a whole 25 mph higher than the GT86 at 165 mph. And the Porsche is only $8k more at $40k to the GT $32k
Only American poor brain people reading brochures. Here in Europe. The most importen thinks is driver. Because our roads are not straight. Poor American life.
The older Cayman isn't all that much quicker tbh. Not the standard one anyway (which are now worth MORE than the S due to the bore scoring issue on the 3.4 engine!). The official figures are also miss-leading for the gt86, it will actually get to 60 in 6 sec on good tyres. I've witnessed it myself and it's quicker than people expect. It's also quite a bit lighter than the Cayman.
That's what I am doing in the video, practicing. This relatively old video keeps getting views, I suppose because "Porsche" is in the title. Check out some of my newer ones. Not saying it's gotten a whole lot better but I am working on it. Thanks for watching!
If you can keep the momentum up, the GT86 is pretty quick on a track. It's very light and corners very quick, a bit like a Lotus. Only a Cayman S has a big advantage over it really. Only thing you need is bigger tyres as it loves to go sideways. Both cars are hard to master though.
I'm an Idiot Just go to fastestlaps.com and you’ll see that the base Cayman totally CREAMS the GT86, and that reason would be a more powerful engine and a better weight distribution of 45/55 unlike the GT86’s 53/47. It’s better to have less weight on the turning wheels than on the drive wheels.
Fast is perspective. So tired of hearing they aren't fast. Find a new argument They aren't "as fast" as a Porsche. Well ok I would agree. But "they aren't fast" Just lies.. Needs a comparison to be true
@@alanc.8167 yes 100%. I've had my MY14 86 GTS since late 2018 and when you get this car in the mountains (haven't tracked it yet) it just shines. Your brake disks aren't too happy 😬
Your heel-and-toe is fine, but the timing is not right. You are blipping the throttle too early and you are not even changing the gear at the same time. And you change the gear and release the clutch after blipping.
You forgot the most important aspect of a real race (not a drag race) : The skill of the driver !
With those specs, its amazing he was right on on the Porsche's tail!
It's also quite a bit lighter than the Cayman.
downshifting method is out
You must practise hell and toe. You doing wrong. Rev match faild. Anyway good drive
That's what I am doing in the video, practicing. This relatively old video keeps getting views, I suppose because "Porsche" is in the title. Check out some of my newer ones. Not saying it's gotten a whole lot better but I am working on it. Thanks for watching!
That Porsche just can't drive or it would blow him away.... I own a 86.... it's not fast. Even with a supercharger...
It’s not the car it’s the driver
Fast is perspective.
So tired of hearing they aren't fast.
Find a new argument
They aren't "as fast" as a Porsche.
Well ok I would agree.
But "they aren't fast"
Just lies..
Needs a comparison to be true
@@alanc.8167 yes 100%. I've had my MY14 86 GTS since late 2018 and when you get this car in the mountains (haven't tracked it yet) it just shines. I am an above average driver but wouldn't class myself as "good" by any means. driving at my 8 or 9 tenths I can comfortably gap anything I have come across on twisty roads so far. yes you can put this car in the bushes if you're not careful but the way it is set up stock with an understeer bias (as a warning you're pushing too hard) and 200HP it is pretty much perfect for tearing around on public roads - it is setup to look after you. the engine isn't overpowering the chassis, especially on stickier tyres. it's a car you can really enjoy.
Taiwan really rotten ~ really rubbish ~ pay little ~ can not buy Toyota GT86

In your next life the GT86 will be an expensive classic car and you still won't be able to get one. But that's alright, you can still get a Supra MK 7 then.
