  • My thoughts on the classic psychological mystery-thriller Gaslight, starring Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer (and one of my favorites, Joseph Cotten!). This review is basically spoiler-free. :)

You know, I didn't actually see this movie until a few years ago, and for the first time understood where the expression gaslighting meant. The process is quite chilling. I like your old movie reviews.

Same here. I think the term actually originated either from this film or from its stage counterpart. Certainly very relevant these days.

For anyone who likes Anton Walbrook in the original Gaslight, he is also very good in Powell and Pressburger films such as The Red Shoes, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, and 49th Parallel. I highly recommend all 3 of those films!

The British version is a bit closer to the play. The play was a huge success in London in 1938. It was quickly made into a film released in 1940, after WW2 started. The play then transferred to Broadway in late 1941 (with Vincent Price) and was a smash hit. The huge success on Broadway rather than the British film came to the attention of Hollywood so it was decided to remake it and suppress the British film which had known actors but not box office stars. Both film versions are excellent, some identical scenes, some variations. The ending of the British film is extremely tense and unsettling, while the overall suspense and the atmosphere of the house in the American version are probably superior. Both are definitely worthwhile seeing and while they each fully resolve, nonetheless you are left profoundly disturbed and unsettled because you know that many people must be trapped in such relationships and unlike melodrama, there is no outsider ever coming to rescue them. I think Ingrid Bergman's performance is the best of her career, she really is quite astonishing, the psychological insight she imbues Paula with is decades ahead of its time.

Good review JW. I think this is Ingrid Bergman's best performance, though there are other movies of hers that I like better, (Casablanca, Notorious, and Orient Express.) But this is a phenomenal movie.
If you haven't seen it yet, a Charles Boyer movie I would highly recommend is Algiers. He stars with Hedy Lamar, and is my favorite from both.
So glad you do these old movie reviews. The 30s and 40s are my favorite decades for movies.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I think part of my attraction to old movies comes from my upbringing. We watched a lot of old movies in our house, like Arsenic and Old Lace, A Christmas Carol 1951, Bringing Up Baby, The King and I, The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, The Birds, The Wizard of Oz, to name a few. :) So the foundation was already there. But when I got older I started to appreciate them in a different way and take an interest in things I'd taken for granted before, like the photography, the hair and costumes, the performances... And I loved the elegance and class. Plus the more familiar I became with various actors, the more fun it was to track them down in other, new-to-me movies! :)

@@Weiselberry it's like entering another world, or time - travelling, every time I watch an old movie it's like watching another one at the same time when I think of the time it was filmed, the actors and their stories. And, as you said, it's fascinating finding traces of old films in most recent ones! Happy Easter to all, for us Orthodox it's still Palms Sunday.

This movie is a masterclass in lighting. Just off the top of my head:
The change of expression when going through the dark of the tunnle on the train.
The looming shadow when Puala was standing on the stairs.
Lighting the cigarette and the match light showing the street name. Ugh. So good

The greatest movies of all time are pre WWII movies leading up to the 1950s. That era will never be repeated because of all the trashy movies Hollywood puts out in this day and age. Ingrid Bergman was so beautiful in all her movies. This one is worth watching.

I only became aware of this movie in the last year because of hearing the term "gaslighting" used in the context of a news story about a ballplayer accused by his wife of domestic abuse. I recently watched Dark Waters because of your recent mini review, and that movie had some gaslighting going on, I'd say.

Has `Jerome` ever seen `The Man in Half moon Street` starring Nils Asther? It had a British remake in the 1950s as "The Man Who Could Cheat death" starring Anton Differing. Personally, I prefer the former-though the UK one is regarded well.

    • @Weiselberry
      @Weiselberry  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, I saw The Man Who Could Cheat Death about five years ago. I find Anton Diffring an engaging actor, but I didn't love the movie. The Man in Half Moon Street popped on my radar right after and I'd like to see it; unfortunately, it seems to be pretty rare.

It's a very well made film with good central performances and better production values than the original. But then the original actors were also extremely good and Dickenson was an interesting director - not that Cukor wasn't, obviously. I have a preference for the 1940 version but then I may be biased cos 1) I'm British and 2) I think MGM's attempt to destroy all copies of the first film including the negative was a disgrace. Both are good watches though

Nice review! Although I was aware of the term gaslighting I had never seen
the movie until tonight. Joseph Cotten is one of my favorite legendary actors too. I watched the lengthy ( but worth watching )director 's cut of Heaven's Gate in 2020 and was pleasantly surprised to see that Mr. Cotten was in it! Btw I recommend watching the director 's cut of Heaven's Gate. It's very moving and is wonderfully shot. It has scenes of great beauty and terrible violence just like Cimino's other masterpiece The Deer Hunter. I think it's terrific. P.S. you have beautiful eyes and a wonderful smile!

Great insightful review, Gaslight is so good, I remember after first seeing the 2005 version Pride and Prejudice looking up its Director Joe Wright's next project, it was to be another Gaslight remake, not sure what happened with it, believe I saw Gaslight and the Spiral Staircase the same day after hearing my Mum talk about them, not a bad double bill, big Joseph Cotten fan with Shadow of a Doubt being my favourite Hitchcock film, thought he was also very good in Duel in the Sun, Cotten was always believable, always came across as someone you could encounter whether his character be a gentleman or scoundrel. ~ thank you M.S. Weiselberry ~

That may be your experience, but many of my viewers are not familiar with the older films I discuss. Out of respect for them, and a hope that they'll be inspired to watch the films themselves, I don't cover endings and twists unless I feel it's necessary. Even then, I prefer to give a generous warning, regardless of how old a film is. I don't consider it a requirement to offer play-by-play reactions and analyses in a review, and in most cases, I'd rather keep my comments about twists limited so a new viewer can experience the surprises as I did.
