Phil is superb. I sat next to him on a flight to LA in 2010 and he did his full repertoire.

steve wright in the afternoon was and is the best radio ever especially the charters like david bowie, Mr angry, Mr Mad etc.. In the 80s it used to cheer me up so much after a shit day in school. Thank god for steve wright in the afternoon.

morfamike, I agree: he had some fantastic characters.

Malcolm from the Arts Council, Gervaise (keep yer tongue out!), Sid the Manager (sign 'im up boy!"); brilliant!

Ahhhhh, back in the days when Steve's show wasn't as dull as a rainy Monday in Doncaster.
Wish I could go back to the 80s when life seemed so much better.

Such a legend. Thank you for the good times. ❤ RIP.

I vividly remember occassionally listening to the Steve Wright in the Afternoon show when it was actually air on BBC Radio 1, from 30th March 1981 to 24th December 1993.
I always thought that Phil Cornwell's truly excellent impersonations of the likes of David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Michael Caine et al were just absolutely hilarious, especially when he usually interacted with Steve Wright who would often play it both completely straight and deadpan.

Couldn't agree more, my first job as a painter and decorator, (aged 17) listening to Steve Wright in the afternoon with all the different characters in it, brilliant, then he was reined in by the good ole bbc, now he's just a bland middle-of-the-road dj.
      What a waste...
