Super Mario Bros. on Marimba (with 4 Mallets) by Aaron Grooves

Koji Kondo is my hero! He composed the music for Super Mario Brothers and Zelda, which are two of my all-time favorite NES soundtracks.
I transcribed the "Overworld" and "Underworld" theme music, note for note, from the original Nintendo game. It took hours upon days upon weeks to learn to play on marimba with four mallets. View my transcription here: www.aarongrooves.com/sheet-mus...
Fun fact: The Nintendo Entertainment System was capable of producing only 4 sounds at a time: 3 tone channels + 1 noise channel (plus an optional sample channel, which was not used in SMB). It’s amazing how much these composers were able to do with only 3 pitches at a time. Due to this limitation, the composers truly had to rely on great melodies and tasteful chord progressions in order to make the music enjoyable. Some of my other favorite NES OSTs are “Megaman 3,” “Castlevania 3,” “Double Dragon,” “Shinobi,” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”
For this video, I recorded the audio and video separately to get a good marimba sound.
Marimba: Saito 4 1/3 Octave
Mics used: Rode NT2A (stereo pair)
Mallets used: Malletech LS17Z
Camera used: Canon T3i
Thanks so much for watching!

Brightening the world four mallets at a time.
This sounds more original than the original
I agree
How can it sound more original than the original? That doesn't even make any sense at all.
So because the quality sounds better, it then sounds more original?
You are aware that the original played on a very limited gaming console right? Which could only play in 8 bit sound and later 16 etc.
There are piano recordings of these songs from Japan from a long time ago, they release the music in high bit rate formats with real instruments a lot. It's known as game music and you can buy the CD's of it, they do it for Final Fantasy and Zelda as well.
@JC Denton I will walk you through why it's illogical honey. The original is the original, period. Nothing can sound more like it sounds than itself, no different than no person can look more like you than you look like yourself. This really isn't rocket science.
If you actually believe that something can sound more like the original than the original sounds like itself, you clearly lack even kindergarten level logic skills. Because what you are trying to argue for doesn't make any rational sense.
@Drive-By Troll It is, isn't it. But these kids clearly don't understand that the early consoles didn't have the memory space to store songs (thus it was played via 8 bit midi sounds and created by the computer).
Of course Koji Kondo played this piece many times on his piano, but for the game it couldn't store a real sound recording because of the limitations at the time. Though CD's of proper recordings on CD's were released in 1985 (only a few years after the game's release) in Japan. This is because Toshitada Doi invented the CD and it was released in Japan around the time the first Mario game came out.
This is when game music started to be released, video game makers would record professional pieces for CD's and release them to the public to buy. Of course eventually as time went on the video game industry went over to CD and DVD type technology and could include the high quality music right in the game itself.
There are only two originals of this song, the original midi as part of the original game and then the original first ever piano recording by Koji Kondo.
@Drive-By Troll xdddd😂😂

As someone who has played marimba with four mallets for over seven years I can appreciate the level of time and effort he put in to learn the song so flawlessly.
And he not only learned it, but mastered it so it looked completely effortless.
The syncopation required to pull it off is insane!
The marimba is such a satisfying instrument. Like you could be having the absolute saddest day in your life but once you hear the marimba your mood just goes up almost immediately!!
