    I love this drone. I was always a DJI guy but this thing really goes the extra mile tracking me during activities.

    I see Skydio 2 as best industrial tool yet. Using it as toy to play with from a GoPro POV is foriegn to me-& beneath it's capacity! Using it on architectural sites, real estate, commercial inspections, the cinematic capabilities - like your flight through metal girders for example, etc, Skydio is designed to work! If it is fun for play, OK, (one followed 2 of us on horseback smooth as silk) I'm convinced by the company's release notes, she's built to work....at 100mb/s; zoom on the way; it's pre set quick shots are amazing! Thanx for your review and.POV!

    I only hit dislike coz after a year of u putting this review up, no one ever dislike it, I think that’s amazing!!! So now that I owned a skydio2 I came to watch this review again and learning and understanding more what u were actually talking about the drone. Good review Russ and I’m sure many more skydio2 new user will find this video very informative and useful

    Hey Russ. Ive been looking at reviews of this drone and still cannot believe the capability of the avoidance system. Its insane. Completely agree with you on the "taking it through a cluttered trail", definitely not really what this was made for. Some of the high speed footage while tracking from this drone is incredible. Pretty damn cinematic for it flying itself. Cant wait to see what the next firmware update brings. Great video and review.

    Thanks for the video, I didnt know about that drone. Sure looks cold there! haven't seen snow in my area of Texas in a long time. I learned when I bring in my drone from the cold to put it under a fan and it will stop condensation until it warms up. It may be our high humidity causing it to sweat.

    Nice review 51D! I received mine early on and have 4rs flying time on it, totally agree with your assessment, the software needs some refinement which I think will come. I use it exactly as you described and nothing come close to performing like the SD2 when it's given room for the OA to work smoothly . The game changer is the SD2's low probability of crashing when used within the recommended lighting envelope.

You really do make awesome content! Those rising numbers are going to do the talking for you to these drone companies I feel sure. It wasn't a light decision, but I've just placed a deposit on the Skydio 2 Pro Kit. This will be my first drone. I'm not far from their HQ, maybe I'll ask if I can pick it up in person.
    I'd previously expressed some reservations about the Skydio 2, based on various TH-cam reviews. After watching Skydio's on-demand webinar, "Accelerating Your Part 107 Business with Skydio," I better understood some of Skydio's design decisions and I realized the Skydio 2 may well be the best solution for my needs. I'm in Production Batch 5, now shipping in order received, so I should soon embark on my own learning and testing.
    Now I just need to sign up for the Part 107 exam. In the mobile age, FAA require that PSI's online registration work only on desktop hardware running Google Chrome. I only have a laptop and an iPhone: due to space constraints, I converted my desktop box to a file server for the household. PSI aren't the easiest people to reach on the phone.

    Biggest drawback for me is the relatively large footprint for storage, since it's wings don't fold the way the DJI Mavic Pro's or the Autel Evo's do.

  • @RCModSquad
    @RCModSquad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Just a little food for thought, I think the reason it did so well in the woods is accredited to the high contrast provided by the snow. If you try that same trail with no snow on the ground I believe you will have a very different outcome.
    Just my $0.02. 😇 it was still a nice review.

      The camera is for you, the drone itself is using a different method to avoid obstacles. What the camera is picking up does not matter.

    • @MrPhilbautista
      @MrPhilbautista 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've watched other videos that were not shot during winter and it still did quite well. Maybe not as good as this one but still well enough to avoid branches. It's tracking is based on GPS in the smaller remote but it's avoidance is optical. Just search "Skydio 2" and watch the other videos.

    • @RCModSquad
      @RCModSquad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      philaw123 yep, it’s collision avoidance is optical and this one was “seeing” much smaller branches than others I’ve seen. That’s why I think the added contrast from the snow was the difference.

    • @152drake164
      @152drake164 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The drone uses "depth perception". This is why it can maneuver very well. It doesn't rely mainly (or at all) on contrasting of images to identify an obstacles (computer vision?).

  • @Paunzi1

    • @noonespecific9463
      @noonespecific9463 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make that 2 competitors, check out the evo 2, three different models and removable gimble so you can switch out the cameras , 40 minute flight time and super cool range. If it all works as advertised it’s going to be an amazing platform . Cheaper than most DJI drones on that first model that’s going to be released in like 2 weeks. I’m hoping all that’s going to stay true. It also has 360 degree obstacle avoidance, top, bottom and both sides. The price on that first one is going to be 1475 is what they said in the vid I seen.

    This drone is what it is. You have to decide what you want to do with the drone and buy the one which fits your needs.
    It's like cars.... some people like high performance cars and other people like cars to cruse with.
    Who knows what DJI will come up with next maybe a switch to change from the Skydio 2 type flying to the DJI Mavic 2 zoom/pro. all in one drone.... just change the profile.

  • @davidwalker2402
    @davidwalker2402 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Mavic 2 really does well in open spaces give it plenty of room and you would be surprised just how good it really is, it will also give you so much better footage M2 tracks the subject, skydio avoids obstacles .

    • @Glen.Danielsen
      @Glen.Danielsen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      David, brother of DJI: in my view, after having seen so many drone crash compilations where Mav’s eat twig and fall like leaves, I wonder. God bless!

    • @davidwalker2402
      @davidwalker2402 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glen M. Danielsen I think you miss the point, 51D said that using skydio around twigs small branches causes it to track the obstacle first causing footage to be very choppy, so for best results skydio need to be flown in an open area, so both these drones in an open area there is very little difference, but I suppose if you bought skydio for the purpose of tracking and you weren’t really concerned about the footage, well yes it’s better at that, I just wonder how many realized that they would have to forgo something as important as footage in a camera drone .

    • @Glen.Danielsen
      @Glen.Danielsen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Walker Good points, yah. I’m always missing points, darn it. For me though, I would want a drone to be able to prioritize its own well-being _first,_ footage being secondary, I think. If an advanced drone is tasked with finding its way out of a tumbleweed, I would expect it to forget about footage. Russ mentioned that he hoped that the footage might become smoothened while avoiding objects; I wonder if what he means is that the blue bird’s A.I. might become more skilled at choosing pathways when following. Maybe that could be next for wonder device! Thanks for reply, David; together we will move safely through our samara.

    • @davidwalker2402
      @davidwalker2402 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glen M. Danielsen well I don’t know if skydio can improve on what it has, I hope they can, I would love one but now I’m trying to figure why I would need one as day by day it seems to fit into only one category and I’m to old for all that running about ;+)

    I've had the Skydio 2 for about the same amount of time as you, and I'm really enjoying flying it. I fly a lot of non DJI drones so I'm not having same issues as many DJI only guys are . In fact I'm a Anafi owner, so using the controller is almost second nature for me. I love the camera on it, strait off the memory card the video is very nice. It's lacking a lot of features that other drones have, but I tend not to use such things as Hyper-lapse and orbing features that much anyways, so I can live without them for now. Good review Russ, by watching most of your Skydio video's, I can tell you really like this one.

    Hi, I was wondering how you take care of your mavic mini batteries and what you would suggest doing with them for storage even if it's just for a short time like overnight or 2 days I know for 10 days You're supposed to keep the battery at around 40 to 60%.

    • @51Drones
      @51Drones  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Discharge the battery to 40%-65% if it will NOT be used for 10 days or more. This can greatly extend the battery life.Two days fully charged will not be harmful but don't leave it fully charged for more then 3 or 4 days.

    Excellent video and flight evaluation on this drone. This drone amazes me with what it can do! Love the looks of it also. The controller needs tweaking to make it better. Charging is also an issue unless they have fixed it already.
    My problem is that with all the rules coming down the pike, I have lost a lot of interest in drones. Was planning on buying a Mavic 2 zoom and even a Mavic 2 pro. Now I am thinking it through. The Mavic mini is the best option for me right now.

You have given me great feedback, to make the decision to remain on the waiting list for my Skydio2.

      @@51Drones I guess I wasn't clear. What I was asking is that right now, with any standard drone, yes, I can command my drone to go where I want it to go with a controller. But if I do, then its all on me whether it crashes into something. So, with the Skydio, if I sent it into this hypothetical thicket, even though I tell it to go straight, will it avoid obstacles automatically but still generally follow the path I want it to follow through the obstacles and emerge out the other side intact?

  • @sky173
    @sky173 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think if they increased the size and gave us a full-size controller, it would be perfect as a replacement for the Mavic series. I love my old Phantoms. This may give it a run for it's money.
    EDIT - YAY! The Phantom 4 V2.0 is coming back!

      Sky173 it makes me wonder what’s next for mavic 3. Seems like a cool drone. Like the evo. Till the mavic 2 came along. I’m glad innovative products keep coming. Gives us great options. Just wait till the competition responds to buy. Can’t wait for the new drones this year.

    • @sky173
      @sky173 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EdibleThoughtz I can't wait until other companies can compete with the quality and inovation of DJI drones. The Skydio appears to be the right step in that direction. 2020 should be interesting. I've never owned any Mavic drones, only all of the Phantom series. For my needs, they are perfect. I may have to jump up to the Inspire 2 later in 2020 but the P4Pv2.0 does a great job for now. I can't stand the controller on the Mavic series. I'd pay a premium for a full size controller, like the Phantoms.

    can you answer this question for me? while I do love tracking shots from behind or in front, my favorite is from the side. for example, i'm biking in a straight line forward. the drone is perpendicular to me, looking right at me but flying in a parallel path, maintaining the same distance. I like this shot because it maintains the sense of speed, a view of the background and the parallax movement, etc. With a traditional drone, I can't see anything coming at the drone because the drone is looking at me. and with a traditional drone, it's looking forward and can't see the periphery. in all these videos of this drone, I don't see the kind of shot I like. I see the drone spinning around me or tracking me from behind. Does this drone handle my kind of shot well? Thanks

    • @51Drones
      @51Drones  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Russ, I think yours is one of the best reviews I've seen on the Skydio 2. I watched many and at first I was gonna smash the buy button and drop around 1500 for the controller and Batteries. Then I started to think about my use case. Yes I'm out here to in Western Rural Iowa its openness everywhere, rolling hills, farms and beautiful State Parks and huge Lakes. Wind Farms just all over the countryside. It's really Gods Country out here. So yes its perfect for it but I just don't think it's perfect for me. I've flown DJI almost from the beginning, I've had 2 Phantoms a Spark and a Mavic Air. It's great to know the P4 is coming back, I'll buy it in a heartbeat. I won't even have to think about it. I think with my others will do well. I have a Pocket as well so I'm kinda fan boyish on DJI. Just not the Mini. I like real Drones that can be used for things other than selfies. This really should send a message to XDynamics about the new Evolve 2 build it and sell it at a price we can all afford and we'll run to you. Otherwise it's still out of reach for the most of us.

    • @noonespecific9463
      @noonespecific9463 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Droning Harry , you should check all the info on the new Evo , I also like DJI drones and have 2, but I’ve been running into issues with them not letting me fly in places that I should be able to, not a terrible amount of times , but for the price it really shouldn’t happen even once, and their generic responses for support send my blood pressure up. The evo 2 is going to be priced better 1475 on the 8k version that releases first and very soon. And the specs are really amazing if they stay true it’s going to be an awesome drone I think, and best of all, no geofencing , no big brother as I fly safe always and don’t need one anyway. If you are wanting what that phantom provides and willing to pay I agree it’s an outstanding drone with an awesome gimbal and camera set up and probably one of the best for certain types of footage and that may be exactly what you need , but if you can live with the forward mounted camera it’s sounding like that Evo is going to be awesome, probably worth a look. For what it’s worth, Happy flying either way you go for sure though!

I’m looking for my first drone and there was no other candidate so far but the Mavic Mini. but now I’m not sure. :) considering that I’m planning to use it for years the price different is not a game changer. but the size, the useability... if Skydio 2 would have a kind of “Fly more combo” I think I wouldn’t hasitate... what do you think?
