Fitbit Alta - How To Reboot, Reset or Restart

- Restarting your fitbit Alta (generation 1) is easy & quick. You won't lose user data, but is the recommended action whenever your fitbit is acting up such as: not synching, isn't responding to taps on the display and any other odd things.
You'll need your USB charging cable and plug it into a USB port.
Next plug the fitbit alta to the charger.
Notice the small round button at the USB plug portion of your charging cable. We simply need to press this button three times within eight seconds. Take your time pressing the buttons. You should feel a short vibration on the fitbit with each time you press the button.
If done properly, your fitbit will display the logo and software version. At this point, you can remove the device from the charging cable and if you are paired to a smartphone you most likely will not have to pair it again, so you can use the app and sync.

Thank you, I wanted to change my display from vertical to horizontal, but it just wouldn't let me after 5 attempts at syncing, discovered your video. Turns out I was only pressing the button once. 🤦🏻♀️ will try fix mum's later with the same method as she's been having issues with it for months

My fitbit froze on me (never happened before) and I googled "My Fitbit is freezing up" but when I read something about a button to restart it I looked on my fitbit and couldn't find anything. Then I TH-cam searched "Alta fitbit freezes" and found your video. Didn't expect that button to be on the charger! It's ok now, I really appreciate the video. : )

The reset doesn’t work for everyone, my Alta HR just stopped working....obsolete wouldn’t get another Fitbit, all this company cares about is sales, never mind building a strong customer base.

I also have a similar charger without the button..but what I did was to plug and unplug the charger 3 times out of the USB outlet and it worked.

Debra Siemen Yess this is what mines doing. It works when plugged in but once I put it on my wrist it doesn’t do anything or respond to my taps.

Please help me, put my fitbit on the charger and it turns on like normal, full charge. As soon as i take it off and the screen goes black it wont turn on again until i put it on the charger. What do i do?!?

I just bought an alta from craigslist without dongle or cable charger, how do I reset it so that I can use it without issues? I will buy a charger soon but I wanted to know if I could even use it. I didn't do my research well but I was able to pair with my iphone with the battery life that it had left.

hmmm, I think that's something that fitbit support can help. I haven't seen the workaround for when the button is missing.

Hello Jim, I tried restarting my Fitbit Alta at least three times, the Fitbit logo appears, then says "v.21.37.11". Before I did so, there was a battery symbol with an exclamation point in the middle. After restarting it several times, it still appears. What should I do?
+Jewel Pippin hmmm that should have restarted after a few tries. You might need to give a call to fitbit support as I haven't run into this situation where it didn't recover.
when I double tap it doesn't do anything unless I plug the charger in and it doesn't have the charging sign I also checked the app and it was successful at syncing and I checked its battery and it said 75 but it still wouldn't turn on when not charging.

You can change that in your screen settings / display choices.

if the reboot didn't work, I'd call fitbit support to see if they have a better trick.

My daughters Alta is dead out of the box. It doesn't even show the charging/battery icon. It'll have to go back for replacement. Quality Assurance goes downhill fast when a company churns out thousands of their products every day.
Second Unit Aerials they will go out of business, I got mine in the mail today brand new and it is faulty won’t turn on only if you plug it to the charger and the screen has white lines which is a dead pixels. Not worth it I bought for the style and I’d like to have a small fitness tracker.
