Yeah when he yielded his gun, that was a deep scene. I really hoped to see him have a change of heart being touched by Gods plan and be inspired by Eli simply hearing "some voice" to go West and then keep wandering no matter what or who stands against him. Pity he died like this. When the blade pierced him do you think the writer meant to say that this was divine intervention or something God had a hand in or just coincidence?

I think it's more that he understood when he was out of his depth. His character comes off as genuinely good in the social sense, but also intelligent and aware enough to be morally alert. He didn't necessarily understand Eli had a higher purpose. He realized Eli wasn't fighting a war so much as he was defending himself.

If you pay attention you can see that he only fires when fired upon hinting that he is using sound to aim and not relying on his vision. Such a subtle hint of the end twist. Well one of them anyways.. Great movie!

Strangest part of the movie and one most missed the most.
Eli didn't know about the book. He told the girl he heard a voice in his head loud and clear, where to find the book. He didn't even know it was a bible but believed the voice enough to act on it. Then as it turns out it was written in Braille. Something he was taught to read. Then learned about its contents and purpose.
In his world be literally walked by faith, not by sight.

      @Diallelus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +92

I would normally agree with you but when they made it to Alcatraz Eli said "I have a King James Bible in my possession!"
I understand the main point of what you're saying though.

    • @WizzRacing
      @WizzRacing 9 ปีที่แล้ว +25

That statement puzzled me till the very end. Then the girl left to return for her mother. In which case she would have retrieved the book as well.
Even the headmaster told her she doesn't have to leave. Her reply was, yes I do. As that could mean the mission was handed off to her. They leave you to fill in the blank.
Now I'm making an assumption as the movie ends there, but it fits.

Look at Redridge during the shootout. He's just standing there mesmerised by what's happening. He doesn't move and because he doesn't fire again he doesn't get hit. He knew something was wrong/different about this character. He felt the touch of God on the situation and his spirit softened. Great scene. Great details.

The Bible speaks very plainly about the wickedness of humanity and damns people who extort and control others for their own gain.
Authority belongs to the Lord Jesus alone. Mankind is to orientate itself in this light of the truth and give glory to God in all our ways and we do this in two primary ways, following the two greatest commandments because they sum up the whole of the law:
1 - Love the LORD your God, with all your mind, heart, soul, body and strength.
2 - And the second is like the first; to love your neighbor as yourself.

Eli carries a weathered Heckler & Koch HK45 pistol (an LEM variant as noted by the bobbed hammer and lack of external safety) as his sidearm throughout the film. In true movie fashion, Eli fires about twice as many rounds as the pistol can hold before reloading.Trivia: Even though the pistol had just been out a year when the film was made, the brand new HK45 was sanded and worn down to look very old (as this film takes place in the future, so it will look like an antique vintage firearm) for the film. The actual pistol is currently on display at the National Firearms Museum located at the NRA headquarters in Fairfax, VA.

People overlook how sound Carnegie's arguments are. Not to defend his evil actions, but he makes a very good point. That he can't build anything because he can't tell the people the right words, but the book can help him do that.
What he basically means is that without religion or similar philosophy that would give the masses some core belief system, you get no civilization, because you can't get people to want to be more than just their primal needs without making them believe in something more than primal.
You see it on the town - it is really desolate. Functioning somewhat, but just a dark, ugly, brutal place. It needs a touch of something grander to grow beyond that. A vision all the people can understand and follow.
I actually realized this in my own life too which is why Im pointing it out. Born into upper middle class or upper class, city kid, dad an atheist, mom wasnt I think but acted like she was sorta because of dad. Dad always kinda ridiculed religious people, mocked church, disliked or even hated organized religion. But interestingly enough, he had a bible in the table near his bed.
Anyway...I am more like mom, but often pretended to be like dad and thus I too enjoyed a lot of anti organized religion stuff in comedy, stand up comedy, literature (Life of Brian, George Carlin, God Delusion, etc.). I had my belief too, but I too often mocked some things religious.
I worked in a good company, got fired after 8 years, fell on harder times, suddenly felt what it was like to have nothing. To be invisible to others. And it hit me, now I finally understood why religion is so strong in smaller communities, maybe among people of more modest means, in poorer smaller rural towns - it is because perhaps these circumstances make many people value what religion offers more because they need it more to keep their lives and communities more industrious, happy and functioning. Remove religion from them and it's desolation like in the movie. And in the cities, because of various and more vast means to satisfy our urges, needs, desires, people rely on religion perhaps not as much or in a less IDK strong or firm way.
I realized that I appreciate my belief system more than before during these times and that really my past ridicule of some things makes me feel IDK... like a brat, an arrogant brat or a punk. Because I poked fun at something I need too and perhaps at something that for someone somewhere is the only thing from making them go completely crazy. Or worse.
Basically what I realized is that religion, despite some arguments against certain things - how it is practiced, by whom, and how some people hide behind it, abuse it, etc. is perhaps one of the most essential things holding most of the world together. Whether it's religion in any form on any continent, and no matter how it evolves with time, mankind needs this spirituality and belief system to feel hope, peace, so we feel safe in our minds or souls, motivated and consoled in time of need. Without this, our world as it is would not be where it is.

This scene is so good. Gary Oldman's character knows that you can only project so much force to keep people in line and that you need something more powerful to keep them under control: an idea, philosophy, ideology, a religion. At the end of the movie he loses his goons and the whole place descends into anarchy which just furthers the point of a unifying idea is integral to a functioning and long lasting society.

It is a bit weird how he looks people almost directly in the face.. maybe he got used to it

this needs more attention. I'm on a Denzel scene binge, and I just watched that scene from training day. Love it man. 😆❤️

The twist at the end of this movie is one of the best. The whole time he wants the book without knowing he actually needs him and not the book for the twist at the end such a great Denzel movie, not that there are many that aren't.

He just activated the "Heaven's help" superpower.

I noticed a really subtle detail in this scene. After his reply at 0:29, you can hear him clicking his tongue as if echolocating, calibrating the amount of people and their distances. Cool stuff indeed.

Sorry that this is so late but if your still wondering what it is it's a hk45

And it's so strange that he shot 16 rounds, considering the HK45 is only equipped with 10 round magazines which means 11 rounds if you count one in the chamber. Though who knows, maybe he has aftermarket 15 round mags! Lol

Imagine that, Hollywood Director shows 16 shots fired from a 10/11 shot pistol. Good shootin' Tex! Bad guys lost. Notice how the leader in town tried fancy words, twisting, parsing meanings in order to have evil prevail, especially since he was implying the "meek and downtrodden" would benefit if he had the book. The Pied Piper leading the simple minded down the wrong path of life, typical.

I saw this in theaters in Chattanooga TN while there for work. I was with a couple of work-friends.
When the movie was over, they didnt turn the lights back on for us to walk out. They left the screen dark. Everyone sat there unsure of if anything was coming next. I knew what they were doing though.
I got up and smacked the one guy next to me on the arm and they both got up to follow. After we got about halfway down the ramp, others followed. Still pitch black in the theater.
It was an awesome movie, and what they did at the end was even more awesome.

It’s a shame this movie didn’t have a better director. So much potential with a terrific cast and great plot. Would have loved to see what tarentino or Nolan could have done with those tools.

A lot of infantry actually do use hearing protection, thereare special plugs that allow you to hear voices and block out noises that surpass a certain number of decibels.Of course there are some that choose not to wear them, but like he said tinnitus is a huge problem in the military lol
