What makes me to think that is that it's similar to the sword one of the vestal's abilities invokes. It's a manifestation of holy light power. This could be a manifestation of a strange artist's power the Jester has or a metaphoric image as you say (like a highly deathly psychological trick he has, couldn't it be?).
Or he carries balloons full of helium with the spear attached to them, and blow them up at the right time. The question is : why don't we see the balloons when the party move ? Are they just above our sight ? But that would be fun.

Happened to me with Man at Arms It's a great defensive combination having him and Jester on ranks 3 and 2, with a sniper on 4 that has a healing ability and a huge damage dealer on 1 maybe with a healing ability like flagelant You get stress healing, ofensive buffs and healing abilities!!!
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Grave Robber/Jester combo - GR gets higher speed so Flashing Daggers hits 2+3 with a bleed debuff, setting Harvest up perfectly. Grave Robber loves more crit, too. It's a good Warrens/Weald clearing party. Plus Lunge/Fade gives the Jester a nice lady to dance with

Anyways, great video as usual so far, I use the Jester a bunch, it's nice to be able to come out of an area not much worse than I went in it, or, even in some rare cases, better than you were when you went in if you have good luck and play your cards right. Also saves some cash stress healing in the long run. I also like how he looks, ngl.
I remember i used to primarily use Jester up in the front with on guard and damage boosts and finale as my first action to often one shot a back row stress dealer or other squishy important target, then stress heal. Was an oddly effective strat early in the games history and on medium difficulty.
ive found that finale is really good for boss fights. there have been some boss fights where I just thought I was screwed untill i popped finale and took out a huge chunk of the health. althought i guess the reason for that is that bosses take a lot longer than hallway battles
Friend is just recently getting into darkest dungeon, i stopped playing a long time ago (for no reason in particular, i still love the game) I sent him a few memes and these videos started showing up in my recommendeds, watching these guides to see if i should send them to him, along with watching my friend play really makes me want to get back into it

I'm excited to share one of my favourite teams, and that's Jester/Occ/Abo/Leper. My twist on the Support team, in a way. Absolutely agree about Battle Ballad fixing most of what's wrong about the Leper (Acc and speed) Battle Ballad and Demon's Pull are the main engine, while Rake, Hew, Chop and Rage are more than enough as far as damage is concerned. Both frontliners synergise really well as they both have self heal and frontline cleave. Demon's Pull can bring any dangerous rank 4 enemy in reach. Jester is on rank 4 because he spams BB and his stress heal anyway, and Sacrificial Stab surpasses any attack the Jester could do. Sacrificial Stab, which by default has bad Acc, particularly benefits from BB, which is yet another nice touch. Even then, a Focus Ring on the Occ does not hurt - along with Cursed Incense. Significantly, I find this team is the only one with which I can have the Abo under Beast form on every battle. The team has so much stress recovery than the backline stress dealers lose their high priority status, which is pretty fortunate given the Leper's targeting, but also a nice twist on the core mechanics of priority targets. That also makes it particularly relevant in the Courtyard, and I defeated the Viscount with this comp. The party relies heavily on the (top-level!) recovery phase in order to heal and stress heal, and excels in regular battles. In Endless mode however, it would obviously be vastly inferior to a Jestal party. With that being said, I find that there are numerous very powerful comps pairing the Abo with religious characters (which was no possible before CoM), and I believe most players still have not realised that potential.

My best party ever was a Vestal, Jester, Highway man and Man at Arms/Crusader depending on the enemies. Jester was a dedicated assassin working with the highwayman to melt opponents while the Vestal was a dedicated healer and stunner and the Man at Arms and Crusader being tanks and buffers, which the M@A being stronger at buffing and the Crusader making certain runs easier due to his bonus damage to the unholy, as well as being slightly more offensive.
I've been liking your content, keep it up! I liked how you adjusted your tier list, we seem to agree on many things on how you play this game. Flagellant is probably S tier just after Vestal though. [long winded reason, but fight me: flagellant is both reliable and fills so many roles in one character. Backline damage on a frontliner is godsent, he got the best "oh-shit" buttons in the game and both of those heal a set% amount which rules out pesky rng. He's good at chewing through bosses due to his DOTs. He's supricingly good at stress healing, he reduces stress spikes in your party and can take it off himself with camping. Should you stack -Stress on him it becomes almost as good as inspiring tune. His affliction is not AS bad as the default ones, sometimes it's even a bonus. On top of that he got stat bonuses bellow 40% AND perks at death's door, not to mention his restistances. The only real downsides are bleed resistant enemies ofc, ruins is a no-no, cove is situational. But he's IMO THE best hero to bring in the courtyard, the weald and the warrens]
I think that's the best case to make for flagellant. A frontline unit that can heal and damage the back is valuable, and yeah he shreds the courtyard. Thanks for the kind words and spending time with my vids :)

Many champs are incredibly close in overall power, I felt. The only real exceptions are Vestal (S), Leper (C), and antiquarian (S or C). Cheers!
I do rank 3 static jester personally - harvest, slice, ballad and inspiring tune. No movement, no finale. If he gets displaced (which his rare given his dodge), I stick to ballad or tune anyway until someone else moves like the healer or a char with a move ability I should probably swap slice or harvest for a movement ability though. That said there are plenty of times I use both slice and harvest in a battle depending on the health of the rank 3 enemy. Regardless my strategy could most likely be improved. I've never tried a finale build to be honest, the support jester with bleed backup has just been too good. One issue with ballad however is you get diminishing returns from ballad after the 1st one, where you're already so fast and accurate on average you aren't getting as much move economy from further ballads, such that the crit is only thing that retains its value no matter what
I do like that idea too. Or should i say the visual of this team. Where it's literally 3 psycho clowns. Kneesliding with their lutes out playing just music. Scaring everything. I named my god-tier jester Cicero too, before he got a crit peck at 83 dodge from the shrieker and bled out on the turn immediately after because I had just soloed.

Pair that with Bright Tambourine and Zealous Vigil and you can take off a whopping 94 stress on your afflicted Crusader. Add the -10 stress from feasting and your affliction can be easily removed with 2 camp skills.
Does anyone else just OPEN with Finale in mob battles to burst damage the most threatening enemy (usually a squishy backliner) and then spend the rest of the battle using Ballad/Tune from the back? That's the best use of Jester I found, it makes a lot of sense to me.
I've been surprisingly successful running a HWM/Hellion/Jester, at least up to medium Veteran dungeons. They don't give a damn about shuffling, and they're all chilled out hard hitters. I'm gonna be so sad when I lose them to some dumb RNG crap. lmao
Turn Back Time adds an *additional* 15 stress heal to afflicted characters. That's why it's called turn back time, it's restoring them to how they were before they were afflicted
I'm new player and recently started playing jester in party and nvr unlocked battle balland cause it said buff target now I know it's for party I was missing out on so imp skill.
A really dumb meme idea, but you should make a long champion dungeon run with the jester but the video speeds up every time you use battle ballad. Video is gonna be like 8 minutes at most
You mentioned a potential melee jester and since he's my favorite unit I had to comment . I've watched a few videos where you've used him as a "lute hero" which is fine as I have a dedicated bard with crystal lute and the bright tambourine and speed quirks to ensure a stress free environment... But my absolute favorite build so far is the melee jester. I have corvids grace, slugger, and precise striker locked on my jester with warrior of light and deadly as my unlocked quirks *wish you could lock them all* I use critical dice and ancestors pen as my trinkets. And I usually have him in position 2 in most parties(unless it's a boss fight in which he starts at 3 to stack a few ballads) with dirk, harvest, finale and I usually run ballad instead of tune since I don't use any trinkets to buff stress relief making it nearly useless but I crit so often that I rarely need it anyways. The coms I like is. (from 4-1) P.D, VEST, JEST, FLAG. Though leper, crusader or man at arms are also great I just prefer the Doctor Flag combo with jester to bleed and blight the entire enemy team. I have 2 questions though... 1 should I keep slugger locked or trade it with deadly. And 2... Do crystalline trinkets actually work outside of farmstead... I assume they do but I've never been able to properly test it since I only have 2 of them but I still put them on outside just in case. And btw Keep the content coming I listen to these pretty often and you persuaded me to use flagellant and grave robber.
Slugger is worth more than deadly imo. Crystal trinkets work everywhere which is pretty fun stuff. Glad you are enjoying melee jester! You can also try solo with some dodge trinkets if you want him to tank up front. It's pretty hard to hit him at that point. Sorry for the late reply and thanks for the support
I think that the Finale Spear is like exaustion for the Jester, because is the end of the performance and was a pretty long one, for the enemy i have no clue of why actually would be affected maybe a mind game or just depression of not hearing that epic number again?
I’ve been playing a bit of both DD1 and DD2 recently, and been using Sarmenti a whole lot in both. I’ve always liked the jester, and I know this video is pretty old, but seeing how he can fit into some teams and what makes him so good is pretty cool.
I mostly use jester as a turn 1 finale guy. So good for one shotting the back line stress damage dealers. Then the jester can stress heal for the whole fight or have some supporting damage with bleeds
So I'm obviously a little late to the party and I'm almost 3 minutes into the video but the reason I was here was to see if the two buff skills were as valuable as they seem and so far it seems like that might be the case. I'm still going to keep watching because I have gained some perspectives about combat through your videos, which is actually how my question brought me here lol.
Battle ballad is the best button and you should press it on turn 1 every time, and sometimes turn 2 as well. Jester works in just about every party too.
The +4/+8 crit from Thing From The Stars trinket is complete garbage, because it’s completely outclassed by Surgical Gloves which gives 8% crit from melee all the time along with 5% melee accuracy all the time. The crit chance from redeem & reclaim is always 12%, and the Flagellant’s damaging abilities are all melee.
Good trinkets come from higher difficulty missions, medium/long missions, minibosses, bosses, events, or rare drops. You can also buy them from the nomad wagon if you have the gold.
Great stuff here! My only comment is that i sorta disagree with the Jester's bleed targeting being a negative. The fact that it hits 2 and 3 is awesome for me. If the pull is only 3 mobs, i still hit the stress caster. If there is a 2-wide mob in the front or back, i get to hit it (more importantly, if there are two 2-wide mobs i get to hit them both). I guess as long as you bring one other character that can reasonably hit position 4 constantly youre good to go with the jester (if you are concerned about the bleeds targeting)
Harvest: great bleed damage to have when enemy has has hidden teammates, as well as general bleed damage for sacrificing attacks to heal (hp and stress) toward end of battles
The increased crits from Battle Ballad alone are a great source of stress heals for the low value stress that accumulates over time. Then you can throw in some Inspiring Tunes now and then when something big lands I fully agree about Finale. It's such a cool skill on paper. It looks and sounds great. But by them you've set it up most fights are over.
Awesome man theses are the best I've seen as not seen many that cover all good composition with the character. Perfect for me as I love the game but I'm clueless lmao keep up the great content man

Slugger is worth more than deadly imo. Crystal trinkets work everywhere which is pretty fun stuff. Glad you are enjoying melee jester! You can also try solo with some dodge trinkets if you want him to tank up front. It's pretty hard to hit him at that point. Sorry for the late reply and thanks for the support
I think that the Finale Spear is like exaustion for the Jester, because is the end of the performance and was a pretty long one, for the enemy i have no clue of why actually would be affected maybe a mind game or just depression of not hearing that epic number again?

I’ve been playing a bit of both DD1 and DD2 recently, and been using Sarmenti a whole lot in both. I’ve always liked the jester, and I know this video is pretty old, but seeing how he can fit into some teams and what makes him so good is pretty cool.
I mostly use jester as a turn 1 finale guy. So good for one shotting the back line stress damage dealers. Then the jester can stress heal for the whole fight or have some supporting damage with bleeds
So I'm obviously a little late to the party and I'm almost 3 minutes into the video but the reason I was here was to see if the two buff skills were as valuable as they seem and so far it seems like that might be the case. I'm still going to keep watching because I have gained some perspectives about combat through your videos, which is actually how my question brought me here lol.

Battle ballad is the best button and you should press it on turn 1 every time, and sometimes turn 2 as well. Jester works in just about every party too.
Used to love solo jester tank build, until solo and finale got reworked and turned into shit

The +4/+8 crit from Thing From The Stars trinket is complete garbage, because it’s completely outclassed by Surgical Gloves which gives 8% crit from melee all the time along with 5% melee accuracy all the time.
The crit chance from redeem & reclaim is always 12%, and the Flagellant’s damaging abilities are all melee.
Where do I find the good trinkets? It's beeing hard to find something about this. It's just by luck?
Good trinkets come from higher difficulty missions, medium/long missions, minibosses, bosses, events, or rare drops. You can also buy them from the nomad wagon if you have the gold.

Great stuff here! My only comment is that i sorta disagree with the Jester's bleed targeting being a negative. The fact that it hits 2 and 3 is awesome for me. If the pull is only 3 mobs, i still hit the stress caster. If there is a 2-wide mob in the front or back, i get to hit it (more importantly, if there are two 2-wide mobs i get to hit them both). I guess as long as you bring one other character that can reasonably hit position 4 constantly youre good to go with the jester (if you are concerned about the bleeds targeting)
Harvest: great bleed damage to have when enemy has has hidden teammates, as well as general bleed damage for sacrificing attacks to heal (hp and stress) toward end of battles

Surprised you didn't mention the abomination, I usually won't even run abomination without a jester to compensate for stress and milk crits.
The increased crits from Battle Ballad alone are a great source of stress heals for the low value stress that accumulates over time. Then you can throw in some Inspiring Tunes now and then when something big lands
I fully agree about Finale. It's such a cool skill on paper. It looks and sounds great. But by them you've set it up most fights are over.

Question, Bleed or Blight what is considered the most lethal dot of the two against the party - and against bosses?
Probably bleed for both. For enemies bleed is more common as an attack, and more enemies are also vulnerable to bleed than blight.

Edit 2: Some use for Solo twice is the scenario you pitch, use Grapeshot for extra crit chance, and Crusader can use his prot mark move to take blows off Jester
