Why Was McGonagall ALLOWED to Give Harry a Nimbus 2000? - Harry Potter Theory

  • Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we’ll be discussing why Professor McGonagall was allowed to give Harry Potter a Nimbus Two Thousand broomstick during his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
    Now, other than the fact that the best broomstick on the market seems like an inappropriate gift from a professor-not to mention an extreme display of favouritism-why was it such a big deal that she provided Harry with a Nimbus Two Thousand?

    Well to begin with, I personally feel that she felt bad having to make Harry stay with his aunt and uncle so she found a way repay the suffering he went through. But she also saw the talent Harry had so she thought it be the right thing to do, plus the letter also said first years couldn't bring their own brooms but it didn't say professors couldn't buy them for the student.

      I agree, Harry did not bring a broom to school, plus there IS a slight difference in the book and movie version. Ron in the movie states, " First years never make the house team. You must be the youngest quidditch player in - a century according to McGonagall " completed statement by Harry, in the book during dinner Ron states "First years never - you must be the youngest house player in about" - "a century" Harry said while shoveling pie into his mouth. Since Harry does not have his own broom of course Professor McGonagall will supply him with one. The Nimbus 2000. Why not? He already has the talent, get him a broom to match it!

      @janethernandez724 exactly. It's not like McGonagall and Harry were the first ever to bend rules and they definitely weren't the last ones to bend rules.
      Atleast Harry didn't have to buy his way onto the team.

    First years are not prohibited from joining their house’s quidditch team. It is just that they rarely get picked because the older students have more experience on broomsticks and are generally better athletes than the younger ones.

    I like to think of it as a professor helping a student who was extremely gifted in a particular subject. As to breaking school rules, he was defending Neville against Draco Malfoy and she saw the incident by accident. If Harry hadn't sought to defend Neville it would not have occurred. Often the first sign of a bullied person's willingness to stand up for themselves is their defence of others.

    I think there are two main ways the broom was paid for: (1) Hogwartz has a discretionary fund for occasions like this; (2) Dumbledore or McGonical paid for the broom out of pocket.

    I feel like the reason she even decided to do something like this is because: 1.She saw how skilled he is in flying without any former training which is impressive. She had hope that he could bring honor to Gryffindor Quidditch team as a Quidditch fan and former player herself. 2.The more important point- Snape was gloating on every Slytherin victory right to her face being the asshole that he was. They had respect to one another but also rivalry so she wanted to shut him up for once. Funny how when Minerva asked Flitwick if he can get Wood, Harry had no idea Wood is a last name and he thought she wants to hit him with a piece of wood. I assume Dumbledore wanted Slytherin to lose so badly because he allowed it being the Gryffindor he was.

      It seems like rules get bent frequently in Quiddage not everyone has the same "tryout" standards to achieve to get on a team. Some just need to be rich enough to buy new brooms for the team.
      Don't forget how Harry is a 2nd generation player at Hogwarts aswell. I'm sure the skill McGonagall saw James Potter exhibit "on" the field also helped her decide after seeing Harry's skill on the broom with his "first time" on a broom. We learn Sirius Black bought harry his first and last broom in the books.

      @@egte5 Yeah you are absolutely right. And as for the last part- From McGonagall's POV she didn't see him on a broom as a baby. She only saw him in the school's flying lesson. So at least in that part she didn't lie.

    So I think this is basically a scenario like that haha

    This is another problem with people who’ve only watched the films, in the books it’s clear that McGonagall takes Quidditch very seriously and has somewhat of a rivalry with Snape where they both like rubbing it it when their house wins.

    About who paid for it, maybe it was an "endorsement deal" with the Nimbus Racing Broom Company? Was it a gift from the company to promote their new line of brooms... Something said company might do every few years to show off and for some goodwill. If McGonagall contacted the Nimbus Racing Broom Company, told them about Harry's skill (perhaps literally shared her memory of the event), they might be even more interested in this kind of deal. After all, more than goodwill, it would also be a rather unique honor to be able to say: "We were the company that made the first broom the youngest seeker in Great-Brittain in over a century used to play Quidditch." If I was the Nimbus Racing Broom Company I would use this fact surely in my marketing campaign (especially since it was the mythical "Boy Who Lived", imagine that prestige). It might also explain how they were able to manufacture a new model within a year. The Nimbus 2000 could have been a bestseller if they played the cards right and the only thing they had to do for that, was donate one broom and with the money they made, they could make Nimbus 2001. Hell, it literally paid off the next year already with the Slytherin Quidditch Team (with the backing of Lucius Malfoy) buying 7 Nimbus 2001's.

    It didn’t say that first years couldn’t be on the team. Ron said that that first years hadn’t made the teams in years, meaning they weren’t good enough. The only rules she bent were flying without permission and having his own broom at school.

    • @Njuregen
      @Njuregen ปีที่แล้ว

      I think first years are not allowed as for I know and they literally had to bend the rules to let him, which they could cause they were in power of Hogwarts. If first years are not allowed to fly without permission that pretty much removes them from getting good enough to join, so Harry was an odd natural.
      A logical reason would be else they neglect study. Also at 11 or 12 you pre-puberty and usually and smaller and weaker and could get serious hurt as a small kid. Might be a rule to encourage study over sports.
      Ginny for example did not join the first year while she was a natural as well.

    • @bobhanson1037
      @bobhanson1037 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Njuregenconsidering both malfoy and harry made their teams show that's not the issue. Harry had a natural gift for it and malfoy had money. So they didn't care about safety with it. They were allowed to fly just under supervision because the normal young student wouldn't be that good and need to practice. It's like a freshman making the varsity team.

    • @BoKnowsDiddly
      @BoKnowsDiddly ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Njuregen they bent the rule to let him have a broom, not being on the team. The permission thing was during the flying class only. And during practice, they would have permission anyway. If he didn’t have his own broom, he could have used one of the school’s brooms. If she really wanted to keep from breaking the rule about owning a broom, she could have bought it and donated it to the team, so Harry could only use it for practice.

    I always assumed McGonagall paid for the broom with her own money, but it does sound a bit silly, she's deputy headmistress, she can probably get some money from the school funds. Some commenters are saying that as a teacher, she wouldn't have the money, and it's a good point, but we also have no idea how much Hogwarts professors / deputy head teachers earn. In our school, deputy heads are said to earn much more than us teachers. And Hogwarts is the only important wizarding school in the UK, those few teaching jobs are basically unique. And the teachers seem to live in the castle and get their food there. Not sure how much they earn but their expenses would be lower without rent and food expenses.

    I dont think there is a rule against 1st years joining the house team, Ron says "first years never make their house team" as first years are normaly just not picked due to lack of flying lessons etc, the only rule mcgonagall broke was a first year having their own broom, which is a fair exception to be made as a person joining a quidditch team would require their own broom for practice and use during matches to save the school brooms being used outside of academic use

    Coz Harry is so talented since birth. He was flying his little broom at one year of age. Gift from godfather Sirius 😊
    But even when neither of them knew this; Professors McGonagall, Dumbledore and Flidwick didn't see any need to protect him from harming himself since Minerva and the whole class (except for Mdm Hootch and Neville) saw that he had an innate flying ability.

  • @theafaith23

    Aside from Harry's innate Quidditch talent, I'm sure both McGonagall and Dumbledore saw in a flash that Harry's life up til then had been no picnic, that he'd had little if anything in the way of genuine affection and encouragement, let alone gifts. I'm thinking this was the primary driving force behind the rule-bending,.

    I am one minute into this video. My personal theory is that she did it for several reasons. First: Gryffindor hadn't won a house cup for several years. Second: she witnessed the innate talent in Harry (not realizing that later we know he was actually given a youth broom by Sirius Black when he was just a wee boy--wait, we see that yet again!), Third, she was the professor to his father and mother. Fourth she was a champion herself. And finally, she had taught alongside Dumbledore for about 50 years at this point as his understudy, and he would give her anything she wanted.

Harry is rich, lets not forget, and I believe still gets royalties from the potions his ancestor created. McGonagall is a teacher. You really think she could afford a top of the line international racing broom? It's just Harry and Ron's speculation that it is a gift from McGonagall anyway. From two kids that have no idea how wizard banking works.

    I think the story would have been better from a certain perspective if Harry had been given an older second hand broom from the supply closet instead of something new and top of the line. That would have made it more his own talent/skill winning the matches than the broom. Especially when Malfoy's father buys Slytherin all new brooms to get Malfoy on the team.
    (And to anybody saying, "but he wouldn't have done that well with an older broom", you're wrong. He'd do just as well as Rowling decided he'd do for the sake of the story. I'm just saying the story would have been better if he'd not been given a top of the line broom.)

    In my country it is not allowed to go on vacation with your family when your child ought to be at school. This is a government rule. They introduced that rule because to many parents took their kids with them outside school vacations. And quite often those kids were not the brightest who easily could miss some lessons.
    But.....the government rule allows a school to overrule this....some reasons are specifically written down...others to the headmaster. (Mostly because family issues like funerals outside the country, other is when a parent cannot get free from his work during the school vacation.)
    In short...Once we did take out kid from school for vacation with such permission.
    School rules are rules to be broken when necessary for a better outcome.
