How to Make Harry Potter's Nimbus 2000

- In this video, I tackle my very first prop replica project, recreating Harry Potter's Nimbus 2000 (before it got whomped by a willow) from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. As a source, I used pictures of the replica that a company called CineReplica used to distribute.
My broom is made from red oak (it's about a third of the cost of mahogany), and is scaled to 5' (152cm), based on some stills from the first Harry Potter film. My build omits the foot pegs that are shown in the films, since they aren't mentioned in the books, and I think that the broom looks better without them.

I was wondering if you’d be willing to share where you got the twigs you used for the tail?
Thank you! I bought the twigs at Michael’s, a big craft store here in Canada. They weren’t branded, so I can’t recommend them by name, but I would imagine that any craft store that sells stuff for making bouquets or flower arrangements would stock a similar product. They cost about $25 for the package.

Here's my bigger question: if you were going to do this, and remain "true to" traditional historic brooms, how would you do it? So no foam, no epoxy, etc.

So I don't know if Apprentice Marks will ever see this, but I'm trying to figure out the "brush part". Why not steam the twigs so they bend easier? What if you wanted the buck to be made out of twigs? Most importantly, did you try different kinds of twigs?
The short answers are: I didn't think to try, you'd need much thinner gauge twigs, and no I used the first bundle I could get my hands on at the craft store. I was more interested in how the broom looked from a reasonable distance than from up close

Hey Duncan, I got the twigs at Michaels, a large craft supply store. Any large craft store that sells materials for making wreaths or floral displays should carry something similar, although you may need to stain them to get the colour right

If I’m not too late to the show, design masters floral spray paint. It will not eat foam at all, it’s technically made for it.

Austin LaVelle I don’t know what the brand was. I found something close in the flower arrangement section of my local craft store and then added some of the same red oak stain that I used on the handle to them to get the colour right.

Mike Mchugh it didn’t require much shaping. I found a couple of foam cones at a craft store and glued their large ends together to create the buck

How much did it cost to make?
Emily Charlotte I didn’t really keep track, but it wasn’t too much. The oak for the handle was probably the biggest expense. I would say that you could probably build one for around $50 total

Where did you get the broom sticks
We have a craft store chain in Canada called Michael’s. They have a section that’s full of stuff used for making wreaths and floral arrangements. I found a pack of twigs that had already been cleaned and stained in that section.
Ive been wanting to make one with an old cane
Jessica Girl1 I don’t think a cane is big enough. The broom handle is about twice the diameter of a cane, and quite a bit longer.
