Another thing to consider is that everyone is familiar with the house animals, and three out of the four founders expected muggle borns to enrol in Hogwarts. Since most of them would have had no exposure to the Wizarding World prior to receiving their letter of acceptance. This means those who grew up in the muggle world like Harry and Hermione wouldn't have been familiar with magical creatures.
Umbridge and Snape could produce a patronus. I don't see why Slytherin wouldn't be able to. He was friends with Griffindor before they fell out and got along with Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw enough for them to found the school. Presumably he wasn't all bad. Given that Muggles persecuted Wizardkind, it was understandable that he had an issue with them. I don't know that in attitude he was worse than Umbridge. This all begs the question of when the Patronus spell was created and consequently whether ANY of the founders have a patronus. I'm not enough into the lore to know.
@@Davidofthelost Well I would disagree on two - hippogryph and Gryphon are quite similar do one of them is out for sure, and badger is not a magical and enough dangerous creature.
I really like to think that it's canon that the houses' mascots are the founders' Patronuses. I was thinking about what magical creatures could fit for each house: Gryffindor: a dragon or a Phoenix (for the fire) Slytherin: a Basilisk (for obvious reasons, kkk). Hufflepuff: a Niffler (couldn't think of another magical rodent) and Ravenclaw: a Thestrall (I thought about it and the reason is in order to perceive their existence you most have a certain knowledge (to know about death, in a deeper level; to have witness it and comprehend it).
I think it’s unfortunate that we’ve only seen houses for Hogwarts and Ilvermorny, and none of the other schools. Doesn’t give us much to compare and contrast with
The other schools may not have houses. Ilvermorny was based on what the founder knew about Hogwarts. Other schools in other cultures wouldn't necessarily have followed the same pattern.
I agree that the animals were the forms of the Founders' patronuses. It is interesting that all four are predator species and the most typically aggressive of the animals is actually the badger. I think the Ravenclaw colors in the film were actually blue and platinum, which was still a confusing choice given that silver and platinum are more difficult to tell apart.
Another thing to consider. Perhaps the founders did select magical creatures as their mascots. However, as time went on and Wizard society separated from Muggle society, knowledge of most magical creatures was lost to Muggles, but not all. Knowledge of a few magical creatures remained, but Muggle society forgot that they were magical. Certain traits might have remained in Muggle fiction like the abilities of some serpents to hypnotize their prey or the ability and obsession of some duck billed platypuses to find and store valuables, but modern Muggles just dismissed it all as fantasy for children.
Aside from the lion being a large breed of cat and one of my favorite animals, in my opinion Hufflepuff is the best house for it's choice in students, I'm a Hufflepuff
Do we know when the Patronus charm was invented? Its main purpose is to defend yourself against Dementors and I think Dementors where discovered in the 15th century for the first time. This makes me wonder if the patronus charm was already known when the founders chose tthe animals of their houses.
Ok HUGE peeve here I know that Salazar Slytherin could DEFINITELY produce a patronus. I mean just look at history by the time they were preparing Hogwarts the muggles were downright HUNTING and KILLING wizards and witches so it stands to reason that at least ONE of the greatest wizards of the time had at least half a brain and could realize that muggleborn students were a pretty BIG risk. Frankly I’m astounded that Rowena didn’t back Salazar cause while I can totally see Godric being all ‘Haha! Who cares if anyone tries anything they’ll meet my trusty sword!! 🗡️’ and Helga just being incredibly trusting and naive one would think that Rowena would at least see the risk and think that maybe some measures could be taken. In fact head canon here I’m think she might have helped Salazar build the chamber and select the monster as a measure to guard the school.
@@KimP0612 Yeah, I checked & it is. I get the griffin & chimaera mixed up sometimes & think a griffin has a lion head (sometimes I think it has a lion body, too).
Well, the reason might also be that JKR didnt think of giving houses magical mascots, and only thought of that when time came to make more money of the back of magical beasts and appeal to the American audience by making them feel special that their school had no ordinary mascots... Just saying. ^^
why are only mankind seperated to wizards and muggles, how about the rest of the living beings? We got got common owls and not all of them on earth send letters and magically know where their recipient are, are they bewitched? grew up on potions or have they got magical genes? How about the rest of the student pets like cats, rats and toads? Could be there be magical lions badgers eagles and snakes?
actually I think all snakes are more or less magical in the HP universe...they have their own language and can talk! the boa in the zoo Harry set free can read english
All owls are like that (in books/movies). Cats are non-magical, the magical version are kneazles. There are crossbreeds of cats & kneazles, where they just look like normal cats (this is mostly for wizards in the muggle world). Dogs are just like cats (not magical), their magical counterpart are crups (they can be crossbred in the same way as cats & kneazles). I don’t really know about toads, rats, badgers or eagles. I don’t think that’s mentioned. I think lions are non-magical, there are animals that are part lion in the wizarding world; griffins (which most know about), but also chimaeras, manticores & sphinxes.
I disagree. Gryffindors (in books & movies) are reckless & fight for fame. Hufflepuffs are kind & fight purely to protect others. (If not for the kindness part of it, I’d be mostly Gryffindor. Well, & I don’t care much for fame. I’m pretty close between all houses, not against any of them).
I think the animals for each House should be: Gryffindor: Gryffin (obviously) Ravenclaw: Raven Hufflepuf: Badger Slytherin: Nothing (This House should not exist)
@user-re3uv3dm6n Why? Slytherin was founded on some very evil beliefs. Any group based on the idea of blood purity should not exist. Slytherin allows those wizards who are prone to evil meet and scheme with each other. If they were not grouped together, perhaps they would not end up associating with one another. Leaving a house named after Slalqzar Slytherin implies that Hogwarts tacitly supports his beliefs. This could allow them to corrupt students who might not have been vulnerable. Putting a student into a House with such an evil reputation communicates lower expectations for that student. It is insulting to give up on someone at the beginning like that.
@user-re3uv3dm6n I replied to this, but it seems to have vanished. Here is what I can remember from that. 1: Slytherin is based on some evil beliefs, Iike blood purity. Allowing it to exist might be perceived as endorsing those beliefs. 2: Grouping students with evil tendencies allows them to form lifelong associations with other evil wizards. It also lets the bad ones corrupt those who might not otherwise become evil. 3: Putting a first year student on team evil is a little bit insulting. You cannot give up on people so easily.

It would be interesting if Slytherin chose a basilisk instead of a snake
Even muggles should be familiar with creatures like dragons, unicorns, and griffins.
I think Slytherin would be able to cast a Patronus. I mean if Umbridge could… anyone should be able to.
Failing that, they could also represent Animagus forms of each founder.
Awesome as always thanks ❤

I have an idea for "theory" Imagine that other founders had their own "Chambers of secrets" - what deadly creature would they put in respectively?
Gryphon, hippogryph, and Honey Badger. Honey badger being the most dangerous. Even more so than the Basilisk.

The name of the element "Platinum" comes from the Spanish word "Platina" meaning "little silver".

The cowardly Lion wanting courage.

The Gryffindors’ mascot is a griffin, not a lion. But I’m pretty sure the symbolism largely carries over.
