WCW Backstage Assault is a professional wrestling video game by Electronic Arts. It was the final World Championship Wrestling (WCW) game released as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) purchased the company's assets three months later. Backstage Assault features commentary by Tony Schiavone and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. The game is distinguished by the fact that all gameplay takes place outside of a standard wrestling ring. This approach was not well received and to date, the game has sold only 200,000 copies
Backstage Assault is vastly different from other games of its genre. Previous wrestling games such as WWF SmackDown! and WCW Mayhem featured backstage areas as auxiliary fighting locations. Backstage Assault took the concept further by removing the ring entirely and having all action take place backstage.
The primary gameplay mode is called Hardcore Challenge. It consists of winning matches against random opponents until challenged by the champion. Throughout the game, players can unlock wrestlers, arenas, and moves for use in Create-a-Superstar. The player cannot defend the championship after earning it.

This game was probably one of the funniest wrestling games ever. The grunt sounds, the character models, the movement etc was really funny. I still enjoyed this game though lol

You have to appreciate the mindset between making this: "Hey guys, I know other games do both backstage and wrestling rings, but what if we just do the backstage bits? Differentiate ourselves by stuff we leave out rather than put in!"
Never played this game during it's release, only WCW Mayhem. Currently playing it on Duckstation. It's a satisfying beat up 'em up. Using various weapons until they give up lmao

I loved this game as a kid, then I looked it up today and the grown up video game reviewers of 20 years ago said it was horrible. That's their opinion, I had fun :)

GOOD LORD these graphics STINK!! I didn’t realize it when I was playing it back then because in the moment it was fun. I don’t even see how today. It’s no wonder the company croaked MONTHS after its release.

i would have preferred wcw backstage assault been a beat em up/simulation type game going through different cities across the usa with multiple stories since they didn't care to make a decent wrestling game. this could have been educational and fun at the same time showing real time video clips.

At least it's much better than WCW Nitro and Thunder game. Good amount of wrestler to playing, Good amount of CAW and Moveset to pick. Much lively commentator and variety weapons to bang some favorite person head like Russo, Bischoff, Wild Slapnuts 😆

The Graphics in Mayhem looked great. I don't know why they looks so shitty in this game that came out not that long after.
On the advantage it also make you easier to create any wrestler without much worrying about how realistic it is.

I remember i bought this game but for the N64.
Man these are more playable then the 2kgames. When I useto play this when I was young it was so satisfying to do a finisher or burn the person. Yeah and they actually show blood.
Although this game was fun, one nitpick I has was that there was no real entrances. Just the Titantron.

They were actually planning to come out with WCW Mayhem 2, it was in pre production but it was cancelled in the end.

wcw mayhem was well good the graphics and game play etc was ahead for its time so why was wcw backstage assault so shit? after coming out a year after mayhem surely the graphics etc should improve after having another year to improve things after mayhem? the graphics were horrendous just everything about it was awful it was like it was rushed being made! big let down i thought
