There is no negativity here, just honesty. Sewing is great, but it can also be very frustating and sometimes even disappointing and stressful. Let’s acknowledge that and then find ways to get past that. Because it is worth it. Love how you used the print! 💕

I've gone to thrift shops and bought XXX large sized garments just for the fabric. I once bought a floor length double knit dress and made may girls each a pair of slacks and one pair of shorts. I also bought a yard sale or thrift shop garment just for the buttons.

I just started sewing again this past year. Sergers were not really a thing back when I started sewing in the 70’s. When I started back sewing, I went to TH-cam and found your site and TomKatStitchery. There I learned about the wonderful help that sergers provide. I purchased a Babylock Celebration and it came this week. Now I need to learn how to use it! I’m looking forward to the journey.

When I was pregnant with my 4th child in a 3 bedroom house we added on a master suite, small bedroom and dinning room to make a 5 bedroom home. I wanted a sewing/craft room at the time but we chose to not incur the added expense. So, in one of the dinning room walls we added and 5 1/2' wide closet with bi-fold doors that I planned out for a sewing space. This closest was built with a good light and storage spots for my machines, fabric, patterns, iron and board... and other supplies. It has a 2.5 X 4' drop down laminate topped table that I sewed at and I used the dinning room table as my cutting station. I sewed for extra income and pleasure over the years. That was 30 years ago and now that my children have all left I could move out and I have 4 spare rooms I still sew at my closet area. I altered my graduating granddaughter's prom dress and mended my 20 year old military grandson's work slacks last week. I've made clothes for the other 7 grandkids (and my kids) and also sewed baby clothes for the baby #10 due next month. I could easily move to one of the spare rooms but I have adapted to my corner of the dinning room and love it. I guess what I am trying to say is not every one needs a huge room to be creative in, you just need a spot that feels right for you.

I started sewing at 10, on a 1930s, Singer 201K. That machine sewed backwards and forwards in a straight line and required me to learn a lot of seam finishes (French, Hong Kong, flat felled, bound, hand felled, hand rolled, lapped or plain pinked). At 56, I now have a 4 thread overlocker/serger, but still prefer a hand finished seam on a woven fabric. Problems are opportunities, so long as we can get past thinking about the things we can't do, to focus on the things we can do.

I can identify with things getting the best of me. I made 4 summer dresses for a trip to Charleston, with Carolina ad enjoyed accomplishig that task. I have purchased a sewing journal to keep better track of my sewing makes but have not had the energy to sew for several weeks because of a Lupus flare that saps my energy. Pushing too much just seems to make things worse. So I am just cutting out a few at a time and will more than likely sew them production style. The interfacing, then the shoulders, then any darts and gathering stitches needed. Leaving my sewing room when I tire and then picking it up again when my energy returns!

Very good tips! Thank you for sharing your sewing wisdom. I am trying to fit my sewing/crafting into my busy schedule. I have not sewn since March when we remodeled our house. I am also in college for my Early Childhood Education/Special Education degree and work full time during the school year. Not to mention family, church and other commitments. I am learning to prioritize and schedule them into my days. Organization and keep things tidy is crucial and I am working on this. I am working on organizing my whole home now that it is finished and I have more storage space. I am making a list of each area that needs attention and will concentrate on them. Prioritize what is important and schedule it.

All my sewing is on hold. Something unexpected happened 3 weeks ago yesterday. I fell and broke my left ankle. Surgery was needed but didn't happen until 10 days later. My sewing room is in our basement, and I have to keep ankle elevated and iced almost non stop. See my ortho surgeon again next week. Hoping to get an estimate of my returning to sew. Yep things happen. So for now I am creating lists of patterns to download/buy. Also trying to buy some fabric online for now. Not lots, but a couple of pieces to look forward to working with.

I had bunion and calf surgery and had 3 projects lined up for the 6 weeks of recovery. 1. Upper body exercises- worked till I tried to get off the floor, but couldn’t get up with the use of only one foot. 2. Organize photos on the computer-could only tolerate my foot below my heat for 45 seconds. 3. Easy mending-(see #2 reason). Just do what you need to to heal.

A couple of years ago I broke my arm and had to have surgery. A few days later, I could sew because it didn't affect my wrist or fingers. So the doctor put a more restrictive cast on! Wah! I should have kept my big mouth shut!

I really appreciate your thoughts about sewing struggles and joys. It keeps it real and away from that Instagram tendency for no one to say what was difficult or disappointing. I have made 3 Melody dolmans - 2 successful and 1 a disaster (but I learned from it and am using the fabric for cute pockets!)

Thanks for the perspectives and ideas, Karina! I'm glad you're pleased with your new dolman top. Many tips and ideas we can try ourselves. I have been somewhat less excited about serger finishes lately. I had to unpick a pair of trousers that I over-engineered for some reason, and it took about 5 nights of phone-chatting to get it all unpicked. Nonetheless, I do like my serger and sent you some Ko-Fi towards your new one! :-)

Your blouse is so cute it has inspired me to make a Melody. For your facing, you could have sewn the interfacing right sides together to the edge, then pressed in to the inside and that would finish the inside. I learned that trick from Sewing with Nancy in the 80's.

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I know that technique and the reason I don’t do it is that I prefer to manipulate the fabric the least possible. The sewing the interfacing on the edge and turning it has the potential to deform and stretch the piece. That’s why I don’t ever do that.

Hi Karina, I'm following your TH-cam videos for a while now and love them. I have bought basically all the patterns you have recommended and now need to sew them.
The biggest hurdle for me is that I'm overwhelmed very easy by everything I want to make that I can't decide and I'm very anxious to just start a project and enjoy the process.
I loved the dress you are wearing in the video when you talk about gathered skirts and higher waist lines. What pattern is that? It looks gorgeous on you 🤩.
Thank for all the time and effort you put in your channel, you are my go to for pattern instructions when sewing.

Your Melody is gorgeous. I love the Melody - it's one of my most worn makes. Great tips. Looking forward to seeing your new serger. I've had a similar nightmare with my sewing machine. The timing needed resetting and (due to COVID) I took it to a different technician. Cost £40 but still wasn't sewing right. I took it to my usual technician and found the other guy had really messed it up. Cost £60 to get it working but the other tech had filed down the hook (!!) so it's now really fragile and the hook really needs replacing which will cost quite a bit and may be uneconomical to fix. Really upset as the timing adjustment should have been an easy fix. Instead it's cost a ton and possibly ruined a perfectly good machine.
