    Funny. Just as my fingers were poised to heap praise on you, you give us a glimpse into how TH-cam works. Sorry it’s not more watched because you’ve saved me from m-a-d-n-e-s-s. More than once. Haha! So thanks and hopefully more will watch. Now a bone to pick with you for showing the collar per directions. It bums me out that there actually IS a reason for sewing it that way. From the day I watched your video (then smacked myself in the forehead for not thinking of it). I’ll ONLY sew with fabric that works with your facing idea, thank you very much….genius. I’d just finished 2 shirts and a dress with this collar (and the facing finish at shoulders). 2 hours to make each one, except the collar then 2 days on each collar/facing. Aarrrggghhh! Each time I was sure I’d get it right, but noooooooooo. 😛 I think these are much more difficult than collars with stands, but love them more and you for showing me the light! Come on TH-cam, we need these things.

    EXCELLENT VIDEO! I have struggled with this technique for years and don't know why I have never improved. You have made me feel less guilty about it because you make it clear that it is a common problem that lots of people have and lots of little things can go wrong in the process. You are so right, that waiting to cut that little snip is the right way to go.

    Such a great instructional video. Wish I had this 2 weeks ago when I had to do this with minimal instructions on a tiny fiddly newborn sized shirt. At least I can say I did it 90% the same as you would: I was lazy and I did machine stitch the facing in the ditch of the shoulder seam, but hey, it looked good nonetheless. I really enjoy this kind of videos, please keep making them.

    Your videos bring so much rationale to sewing instructions and make a blind processes thoughtful and logical. Now I feel like I understand what I am doing rather than blindly following instructions and hoping for the best.
    So far I learned:
    - cutting collar on the bias for more bending
    - stay stitching can be replaced with a basted interfacing to stabilize the curves
    - interfacing the upper collar
    - size difference between lower and upper collar
    - sewing at an intersection rather than pivoting and then turning neat corners
    - topstitching the collar depends on fabric -- what are some of your other thoughts on what fabrics look good with a top stitch or not?
    - snip in after matching the seams
    - basting to keep things in place before using machine
    - using slip stitching for finishing
    do you discuss directional sewing in any of your videos? I keep ending up with seams that are longer on one side than the other :(
    I am only working with woven fabric right now, how do I know when I can move to knits in your opinion?

    Love the details you show in your tutorials. I have 2 questions - I'm drafting my own pattern for a camp collar blouse and see that you have placed the notch for the end of the collar about an inch away from where you joined the front facing to the bodice at neckline. Is this a standard placement for any placket width? the second question is to do with button/buttonhole placement. I am planning to do a separate front facing and have allowed for a 1" placket (adding 1" more width at center front) for 1" buttons. Do I mark for these at the original center front line or are they marked at a halfway point on the added placket width? thank you for any guidance you may offer.

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This pattern uses 1" from the center front, but it could be a little more.... not more than 1.5". I don't really understand what you want to know with the placket. A 1" placket is too narrow in my opinion. The center front of the pattern will always be the buttonhole placement, you can adapt from there.

      @dianneunderwood8456 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LiftingPinsandNeedles Thank you for your quick reply - sorry for the confusion as I realized after I sent this question to you that the buttons and buttonholes need to be placed at center front. You response did confirm that for me which I very much appreciate.

    Thank you for the detailed video and for the many helpful tips you gave! I'm about to sew my first collar and I was confused by the limited directions in the pattern. I feel much more confident now to give it a try.

    I make a lot of camp shirts for my husband. I have a difficult time getting the collar facing to look nice where the facing tucks up and in where you clip near the fold. I can always see the seam.

    I have sewn for many years but still adore your technique videos. You ALWAYS have some very practical tips that are so valuable and have taught me something every time. Thank you for all your efforts. You are a wonderful teacher! I made the Melody Dolman once and, although the end result was fine, I did struggle a bit with the directions in the pattern. About to try it again now that I have seen it demonstrated more clearly.
