    I had the privilege to meet Paul during the 70’s and see him lift and speak openly about his belief in Jesus Christ. Strength, both physically and spiritually. He had no ego that he carried around like many athletes of today. A down to earth individual. Some of the lifts he performed were amazing.

      I don't know, I admit that I'm quite stupid over understanding your knowledge but I too know this man as he lived down the street from me. And since about 62 years ago I wanted to pay someone back who saved my life by stopping a heavy car weighing over 4000 lbs on a steep hill with his bare hands. I know for a fact that Paul has lifted such enormous weight just as I lifted extraordinary weight. But we don't look for fame on each lift. When I picked up 2 seperate 1600 lb safes that no one else could budge or pushed a truck up a hill or lifted the front end of a car every time I walked by it I didn't call for someone to authenticate it. I worked for a moving company that employed several strong football players but I considered myself different in that I knew God had blessed me with desire to get stronger every day over a 50 year period. One other fact in 1965 I witnessed an interview with a 150 yr old man who was in better shape than most but I doubt many saw it and back then authenticating was not necessary.

    Paul came to our Concordia College sports banquet in the early 70’s. He was a very good Christian man. He strength feats for us were picking up a table with eight guys on the table. He overhead pressed 250 lbs with one arm several times. He then drove a large nail through a two by four with his hand. He ran a home for troubled boys in Georgia. He was a man concerned for others and building the lives of young men.

    The 930 squat at Silver Spring was with plates that had been used for a meet there, so nothing fake. But ALSO: He did the lift in shorts and a t-shirt!! No knee wraps, no supersuit, not even a lifting belt! AND he had to step back out of the rack, unassisted. I doubt most 1100 lb. squatters today could duplicate the lift, and maybe not even 1200 lb. squatters with all kinds of elastic gear it took to make their 1100 or 1200s. There have probably been exaggerations of some of Paul's lifts, but that one alone makes him elite.

    I recall reading that he was considered to be a good and decent man. He suffered from kidney stones and eventually lost one kidney when his kidney was found to contain not 1 or 2 stones but enough stones to fill the space in the kidney. I remember the news article stated almost 100 stones of various sizes. As a child of ten I saw the films of him winning the Olympic Medal. He was inspiration to countless beginning strongmen and even body builders. Much respect to you, Paul, RIP

  • @thatguyfrommars3732
    @thatguyfrommars3732 2 ปีที่แล้ว +121

    Great video! A few additional comments: Paul's 600 lb "push press" was only done to forehead height to improve power off the shoulders. He did this for a set of 3. His full push press was 545 lbs/247.5 kg (pictured on the Rogue website) and he also pressed 480 lbs (218 kg) off stands on camera. He also pulled 595 lbs/270 kg to waist height while standing on grass! Paul's best squat for reps in training was 800 lbs (363 kg) for 10 and 850 (385.5 kg) for 6. Canadian strongman Doug Hepburn, himself the world's strongest man before Anderson arrived on scene, later cast doubt on Anderson's silver dollar squat. Hepburn squatted 760 lbs (345 kg) with a 5 second pause, but he was far off 1,100. Still, he phoned Mapes Casino announcing he was coming to attempt the challenge but they told him not to come. According to Hepburn, news about the incident made it into a local newspaper but I have yet to find it. Hepburn also claimed that Paul's bicep curling ability was relatively weak, under 200 lbs (Hepburn to this day has the record on a straight bar - 255 lbs officially and 260 lbs in training).
    One of the ways you can tell Paul was natural was that he was always big and strong, just like Mark Henry. Neither suddenly blew up in their 20s like you see with a lot of guys today. Earle Liederman in his article "20 year old Paul Anderson" mentioned that at that age Paul was already 295 lbs, and at 21 squatted 714 lbs (324 kg) and was using 410 lbs (186 kg) as training weight on the bench press. These compare well with Mark's single-ply lifts in high school (377.5 kg/832 lb squat, 277.5 kg/502 lb bench, and 317.5 kg/700 lb deadlift). I believe these two were possibly the strongest drug-free men to have ever lived, and interestingly both had similar careers (Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting/strongman, and pro wrestling). It would be interesting to see a video comparison.

    • @abhinavkumar547
      @abhinavkumar547 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I agree specially after 1900 because before that, we don't know much accurately about those earlier strongmen , i believe the two strongest drug free man have been Anderson and Henry. Like u said Anderson was a big child since his childhood, Henry was also a very bulky child since childhood. In the 4th grade he was 5'5 and 225 lbs already. When he learnt to squat, during his first day at squatting in his school as a 15-16 year old kid he did 600 lbs for many reps. He would have continued doing it further but was stopped by a coach due to the fear of him having an injury. His elder brother held the squat record in their school of 670 lbs and was a good football player too. People who saw henry squatting that day knew that his elder brother's record would not stand more day. In modern era ie., from 90s until now , i think he was a prodigy.
      Actually Henry did 832 lbs squat, 815 lbs deadlift and 525 lbs bench press all by the age of 18 years and was already the 3 time Texas State champion by then holding all 4 powerlifting records in bench press, deadlift, squat and total in Texas. By the age of 19 years old, Henry was declared world's strongest teenager officially by Los Angeles Times in 1990 as he by that time held the all time teenager world record in both squat ( 832 lbs) and total 2,033 lbs. He was spotted by Dr. Terry Todd in 1990 and after watching him encouraged him to learn olympic weightlifting as it has more money and opportunity of worldwide fame than powerlifting.

    Paul Anderson is one of very few men in history who had absurd "natural" strength. I would say that Paul Anderson's strength reminds me of Mark Henry. Many underestimate how strong Mark Henry really was. He still holds the all time world raw record total of 2314.8 pounds. He squatted 948 pounds (raw), deadlifted 904 pounds (raw), and bench pressed the remainder weight, all at the age of 24. Mark Henry could have done more, but chose a career in wrestling.
    Since Mark Henry officially performed these lifts at a similar bodyweight to Paul Anderson, I would have to say I think Paul Anderson WAS that strong. Also, Mark Henry was not even in his prime when he accomplished these feats. Mark Henry also completed a snatch with 396.83lbs and a clean and jerk with 485lbs, again considered lifetime drug free. It is possible, just very rare to see such raw strength.

      I agree Henry's strength completely remind me of Anderson. I truly believe both were clean. There have been many strong men like them in the history of mankind before the invention or discovery of drugs. And there will be another guys in the future like them. People try to judge everything based on their limited knowledge and logic of what they know currently.
      Just a bit correction - Henry currently doesn't hold the all time raw powerlifting total record of 2,314 lbs. That was once a world record for few months before he himself broke his own record by totalling 2,336.9 lbs in 95 . That was actually as per my research the 4th best all time powerlifting raw total in untested powerlifting and all time world record in drug tested powerlifting. Right now he doesn't holds these records consisting of all federations but wdfpf.

    Excellent video. Paul was undoubtedly the strongest man who ever lived. His individual official lifts have now all been surpassed - but to this day no-one has even come close to surpassing his combined total of best official power lifts AND best official Olympic lifts. All of Paul's lifts were achieved without super suits, wrist wraps, spotters or help in getting the weight out of and back into the squat rack etc. The best and strongest ever in my opinion.

    the thing is you have to compare the greats of previous eras to the other greats in their era. if paul trained with modern knowledge, programming, coaching and diets, he would basically be guaranteed to be lifting far greater numbers in every lift. this guy was unparallelled in his time, and that means he would likely be on the highest tier in this era as well. the only difference is that strength sports have grown significantly more popular, so the top echelon of the sport is just more crowded.

That was my first time I tryed it. I did it with no belt like BIG Paul! Paul never yoused a belt when he picked up cars! And every car that I pick up was with no belt! From age 14 to 29 I pick up 17 total cars when I got older my car of choice was 4door hunda acord 1988 the back of the car weight was close to 3000 pounds! I did a reverse lift I gripped the bumper with my hands and slid the bumper on the back side of my ham strings and I would lock out at the top they I would set it back down in a controlled manor so I would not get hurt 😮🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😊💚💚I watched the world's strongest man on TV with BIG LUE Franco THE HULK NOW YOU KNOW MY LIFE STORY THAT'S HOW I GREW UP GREAT TIMES! 💚💚💚💚💚💯

    It's harder psychologically to be the ground breaker. In other words to by the 1st in history to do a certain weight. When it's never been done before there is always that doubt in the mind of 'Can this weight really be lifted by a human without a catastrophic injury?' For example when Super heavy weight powerlifter Garry Frank retired from Pro Football he could then focus only on powerlifting. The biggest total in history at that time was about 2453 lbs. (Total of your best squat, bench press and deadlift in the same meet) by Ed Coan of Illinois and he'd held the record for several years. Garry did 2462 aprox., then 2500+, 2700+, then 2804 lbs. within just a few months span. He was on the cover of Powerlifting USA Magazine seemingly every month with new all time total record. What proved that the mental barrier is the biggest limiting factor in lifting (and really any sport) was that within 6 months of Garry's 2804 total; 3 or 4 other lifters also went over 2800! They then believed it could be done and could train believing that goal was doable. As they say new ground is the hardest ground to plow. As with Garry, Paul had that rare mindset to be the pioneer. To go where no man had gone before. It's a rare few who will get under a weight in the gym or a meet platform that can and will kill you if something goes wrong...especially if no one has ever tried that weight before. That being said. I don't think we'll ever know how great Paul could have been. The strength sports were still in there infancy then with no one to push him. Competition drives you. And in his time Paul had none!

Even steroids at the time if taken were nothing like what is available today. He is an American strength legend. He also ran a home for orphaned youth. He was loved by his community. He is the last super heavyweight gold medal winner for the USA. He was a great static lifter, probably no endurance, but was very fast. He did some fast sprints at his heavy weight. Fast twitch muscle was a likely
    strength for him. Mr Anderson was his own trainer and nutritionist. He used crude equipment. The Russians were amazed by his strength. Genetic freak.

      Courts of law take the evidence from eyewitnesses of credible standing to this day. Credible witnesses gave testimony to Paul Anderson's feats of strength, if such testimony is good enough for a court to put someone in prison for the rest of their life, it should be good enough for you to believe a stupid lift.
      Here is another man that you're going to call a liar. His name was Dr. Terry Todd .
      In 1963 - 65 Dr Todd was the first heavyweight champion of the United States powerlifting association at the beginning of the sport.
      He was the first man to Total over 1900 lb in official competition, and the first to squat over 700 in verified contests.
      Dr Todd says that he saw Paul Anderson in person, squat a set of 10 repetitions of 800 lb right in front of him in 1964. You're going to have to say that the man who held the official world record is lying to you about witnessing his own record being bested by 80 lb for 9 more repetitions than he did with the lower weight.

    To be overly specific, what exactly does "strength" mean? I'm wondering since a lot of the highest lifts are so high because the mechanics of the length of their range of motions is smaller, therefore allowing for more to be lifted (within a certain range because you still need muscle). A very simple example being how long arms is bad for bench press. If we were to define strength by maximum energy output in lifts (similar to punching power) then who would be the strongest? How would we even measure such a thing?

    What alot of people don't realise is that when Paul competed in Olympic weightlifting, the rules were that the bar wasn't allowed to touch any part of their body until the weight was cleaned to the shoulders. If you look at weightlifting from the 1970s onwards, lifters lift the bar as close to their body as possible almost always grazing some part of their body. Keeping the bar that close to the body made the Olympic lifts much easier compared to how the rules were for when Anderson competed. I think with today's rules his Olympic lifts would have been much higher.
    I'd love to hear comments from any weightlifters explaining how much harder the lifts are when you can't brush the bar up and past your body, instead keep the body out in front. It explains why their form looks abit of compared to more modern lifters.
    Amazingly strong and an amazing man who devoted his life after lifting to Christ and to helping homeless kids that he would raise money for to help support his charity for the children.

I would lay down on the edge of the Holland leg press the front end of an early 70's LTD. I never completed but was only able to get a best bench of 350lbs and a squat of 375lbs. I don't have any idea how much I was able to deadlift in my senior year but the most we had to put on the bar was 605lbs and I did three to five sets of 10.
