- Gone Are the Days! (aka Purlie Victorious / The Man From C.O.T.T.O.N.) is a 1963 American comedy-drama film starring Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee and Godfrey Cambridge. It is based on the 1961 Broadway play Purlie Victorious, which was written by Davis.[1] Davis, Dee, Cambridge, Beah Richards, Alan Alda and Sorrell Booke reprised their roles from the play. This was also Alda's film debut.
A young, idealistic man returns home to the plantation where he grew up in servitude. With him, he brings his fiance, Lutiebelle, in hopes of convincing the plantation owner that she is really his cousin in order to secure the family inheritance. To aid in the comic complications that follow are his family members Missy and Gitlow, and the plantation owners endearing (but ineffectual) son Charlie. - Wikipedia/TCM Database

Ossie Davis' absolutely magical writing and performance is the best I've ever seen! I'm so grateful to know movies like this existed, and I'm so glad I get to revisit some I've seen through the decades, especially the 60's and 70's. Ruby Dee has a sister named Eurie who worked with my mom at Huron Rd Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Ruby and her hubby (Ossie Davis) came for a visit. Eurie shared with them some hot tamales that my mom had made. They loved them. That made my mom soooo happy! I still have that recipe.

Ossie and Ruby were two of the best...period. Both were brilliant. Growing up watching them two on the screen...almost every thing they did made me proud to be African American. Their art and skill gurgled in greatness, ever resounding "black lives matter."

In the '60s, when I was a child, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee visited Montclair NJ to visit Mr. and Mrs Jones. Almost every 4th of July...they'd visit the Jones family. the Jones were my grandparents' best friends, they attended St Mark's Church...we were pre-teens and there were no selfie cell phones or even the idea of intruding on their privacy by taking pictures...
I have been looking for this since my late 20s, for those that don't like this movie, I thought it was funny and thought provoking. This is what happens when you don't pay attention

Saw a local version of this with my grandparents in 1987 in Fresno, California. Kinda wild how James Coco basically took his Captain Cotchipee character and tweaked it for Boss Hogg on The Dukes of Hazzard.
We have got to continue to educate our young people about the great shoulders on which they stand. How our peeple use their art & creativity to educate & you foster liberation, revolution & freedom. I got so caught up in the script, I forgot it was any part comedy and got caught up in the Dramy. I wish I could purchas it on DVD. I am so glad I found the site.

In his early movies whenever Sidney Poitier appeared to be married his wife seemed always to be Ruby Dee .
In the comments I read that someone had noted that Davis and Ms Dee were 46 and 41 at the time of the movie . Most likely since of their birthadys are rather late in the year they were probably 45 and 40 . But they , especially Ms Dee photographed young .
