This beats TV any day of the week!
Narration is excellent, calling out the bridges abd other right of way stuff.
Take as many videos as you can. All of us who will never get the chance to ride your railroad appreciate it! You guys could sell cab rides, although most companies would shy away. We'd sign waivers and all that. These videos will have to suffice.
Capturing the Cumberland in all four seasons would be a great project. Cab rides in both directions!
Hopefully No. 1 gets fixed up and ready for some cab video also.
Thanks again for helping preserve this!!!

Dang, I'm am so jealous now. Working in a grocery store eats my soul everyday, and it's nice to hear the excitement you have for your job! I know you don't run the trains very often, but the thrill you are getting is infectious and I'm glad you are able to video it and communicate to us what's going on real time. I know on the big Class 1 RR's it's pretty much a firing offense to use a phone or camera while in the engine, so it's great that you can, and can share these things with us who want to know what it's like for the lucky few. I read the Trains Magazine article and wanted to see this railroad in action and boom, TH-cam just recommended your videos to me. This is the 3rd one I've seen so far and I have just subscribed and will definitely be watching more because I'm interested in all of the other jobs you're doing too. Thanks for sharing these with us.

Just those few seconds that you allow for to say what something means helps us understand what you're talking about ,,,, it by no means makes any of us experts on any of it but in later videos ,,, where the same situation comes along ,, it's awesome to have the little bit of knowledge to hat you imparted so us and it's a good feeling to know what you're talking about !!!!

One of the most exciting experiences I ever had at least twice was when the operators were called and told to LOCK the bridge up when the inbound coal train hits a certain point, give him clear signals all the way to destination and DO NOT STOP this train. Any marine traffic would have to be stopped until this train clears. Here is why----this train was what we handled daily so the tonnage was 25,000+ tons with 2 full size road units leading 180 or so cars but the kicker was one unit was dead so if we stopped this train it would never move again until additional units would arrive. When he got to the bridge I saw the lead unit was dead with all carbody doors open on the trailing unit to keep it from overheating in the hot summer weather, running in notch 8 pushing the dead unit AND pulling the 180 loaded cars. This was a real ¨rush¨ to see and hear that second unit running wide open as it roared by the control station which sat directly next to the track and to get the full effect, the door to the control station was left open. This was a real treat. I wish I had a video of this to share as the thrill was exceptional I will never forget.

Also speaking of Trains Magazine one of our NC shortlines, the Aberdeen Carolina & Western (ACWR) was featured on the cover a few years ago. They got some nice power. Not sure if they still have any, but at one point they had a fleet of ex CN GP40-2W units. Then one day saw them for sale on a railroad classifieds website. Got some SD40-3 units on the roster that I believe are ex CN as well plus 2 of NSs former F units.

I was riding on freights long before there was such a thing as a go-pro, but I took some photos on 35 mm film. I even took some while standing at the front, right below the headlight, of the track ahead in Northern Ontario.

I have heard of "dynamic braking" while watching a video on train cars unload iron ore on the Great Lake's circa Duluth/Superior.
Supposedly, the rail companies prefer "dynamic braking" as opposed to "direct braking".
It might be time for a "dissertation" on the difference.

    • @tandrirwin
      @tandrirwin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Dynamics use electrical resistance where regular brakes press brake shoes on the wheels.... The weight of the train causes forward motion down grade. The traction motors on the axles turn and generate electricity. That current is re-routed to a fan cooled resister grid where the current is converted to heat. The process helps to retard the speed of the train. Big advantage with dynamics is less wear on the brake shoes...

You probably get this question a lot, maybe ... and the answers are most definitely on Google ... But I wanted to know from a perspective of one who is literally currently active in the field as of today..... How does one become a locomotive operator and where is the best place to start? (not geographically, but point of contact)
I see this career field and I am intimidated because I feel it would be much like the branches of military in terms of consideration for the opportunity.
I've always dreamed of operating a locomotive as a career but I doubt I will ever get the chance to do that based on location and opportunity. But it is a very strong curiosity I've always had and am very much interested in your personal experiences and thoughts based on your current position and environment.

Very good question with a lot of answers. There are some schools in USA, i believe there 1 in kansas city to learn engine man and conductor. You,ll have research if there are more. Our locos are bid jobs here, we are UMWA, united mine workers america, we run a coal mine that has a rr, so ours is completly different. One good way also is hire on with a regional or short line or transit, then work your way up, but that takes years too. If you can obtain a certification from a school for conductor or engineman, that looks pretty good on a resume even if you have to hire in on a lessor job and work it for a few years. But remember, starting out in MOW you learn a lot bout track and track conditions which will be of significant help when operating a train, best of luck my friend an never give up on your dreams
