Quite genuinely, I've never found wheel of misfortune that confusing? The wording is weird, in the same way that animate dead is, but in effect: Everyone choose a number. Everyone who chooses the lowest doesn't wheel, everyone else does. Highest takes damage equal to the number chosen.

    • @EulogyfortheAngels

I absolutely love today's topic! The thing that blew my mind, I just hadn't thought of it this way, was @4:53 "the more complex the commanders get you sometimes you get decks that are pretty linear. They are asking for really specific cards if the commander is doing a specific thing" and that is something I realize I have pigeon-holed myself into with 4 of my decks. Two of them I have grown quite an affinity to. So I absolutely love complex commanders, and at the moment I have too many complex commanders and looking for simpler commanders to balance things out.

52:00 Yep... and Moraug gets even more complicated: I've seen player playing a land during they first main phase, expecting to be able to attack twice in a row...
Except, the untap trigger will happen right before their first attack phase (which is their additional one), and not for the second (aka regular) one.
Although they still get 2 attack phases, unless their creature have vigilance, they won't be able to attack twice.

I absolutely agree. I have taken her apart recently and I'm starting to feel that creeping regret. My favorite Marvel character is Tony Stark and Breya just gives me those feelings of brilliant ingenuity that I enjoy. I tried Inalla and while wizards is one of my favorite tribes, I feel the creatures don't provide a lot of value on their own. Even with Inalla it's just a bit underwhelming to me lately.
I made Nicol Bolas and I love Grixis control. I had a modern deck for a while that did that. While it is what I currently have and enjoy, I hear those delightful siren calls from Breya, pulling me in to rebuild her and make her my main deck for all eternity.

I played against a newer player playing Balmor, Battlemage Captain, combined with young pyromancer effects it is such a pain to keep track of how big which creatures are. Just last week, I also played a newer player who built krark and sakashima. There's way too much going on in how to stack everything and what to select with topdeck manipulation like ponder and brainstorm etc. that he ended up buying a simpler smashy precon right then and there. He was learning quickly though, i hope he will come back to his coinflipping deck at some point, he'll be a good player soon.

Not sure where to ask this, but I was thinking of putting Ebon Praetor in my Hapatra deck. It seems like it would register as 2 -1/-1 counters but I have no idea if it would actually work.
Also along those lines I'm wondering how those more obscure counters would interact with literally anything that cares about -1/-1 or +1/+1 counters. Frankenstein's Monster would probably be the most obvious example of these sort of counters.
Yes, MTG has a card called Frankenstein's Monster. And yes, it's THE Frankenstein's Monster.

You don't choose a number until Wheel resolves. If your opponents allow your Deflecting Palm or Comeuppance to resolve first (targeting Wheel's ability) then whatever number you then choose, if it's the highest number, the wheel player will take that much damage. I don't really run complex Commanders it would seem, maybe OG Multani is the most complex, since it's Voltron that starts out with Shroud, and uses group hug to grow bigger. It's not an especially complex deck (big beaters hitting people is not rocket science), but I think it's probably the most counter-intuitive of my decks. Many of my decks are complex in practice, but usually because they are crawling with self-synergy and thus can surprise me sometimes. This is more of a beginner problem I suspect, where more experience will lead to fewer (but more entertaining) surprises.
Funny about Cathar's Crusade being too much work to bother with, even if it's technically a good card, I suspect that's probably a big part of why I ended up removing Mazirek from my Meren deck, it usually won if it came out, but tracking all the counters was not fun. Good card, but not what I was trying to do with the deck ultimately. I think I ended up with Visara the Dreadful in his place, fits the Vorthos of strong women better while offering a way to interact with creatures. Sometimes I want Ravenous Chupacabra for immediate results, but sometimes I need the real deal, a repeated 'no strings attached tap to kill' effect on a 5/5.

I'd argue the reason Breya seems so complicated is mostly her edhrec page. There are a lot of combos on her page. Just craming all of them into one deck without thinking about them much can lead to a lot of times where you don't know what you should cast. Focusing on 1 or 2 combos specifically and building the deck to support them, things become a lot clearer.
