    This was one of the most helpful eppisodes I have ever watched. Not because it helped me build a better deck, but it made me realize that it isn't just me that has these problems. I am fairly new to commander, and I keep trying to build new fun decks, but I run into the same kind of issues that you guys described here. I just figured that I didn't have enought knowledge to figure out how to make it work.
    But I 100% want to build decks that aren't what everyone else is playing. I want people to see me play my deck, and say "That was so cool. I never thought of that."
    I really love all of you videos guys. Such great content for a new Commander player. And I am sure it is for experienced players as well. :-)

    The protection from Swords of X and Y not synergizing with the rest of the deck is a really good Challenge. You don't want your equipment to become double edged swords ;)

      Agreed. This is why, as Dana did, I made my Ardenn and Esior deck focus on equipment instead of equipment and auras. I like curiosity and Staggering Insight, but I'd rather just have SoFI not fall off.

      I also try not to include cards that would be a hard counter to my deck if (and when) they were used against me. For example not using swords with protection against my colors in mono or two color decks.

      I really like the swords and the place where I would logically use them is a voltron deck.
      The ones that I have at the moment are hearth and home and light and shadow. I play rograkh and Ardenn partners and playing a light and shadow and equipping to rograkh would not allow you to target rograkh with Ardenn’s ability.
      I’ll find a home for light and shadow soon though

    A possible way to make that 5c exalted deck for Dana is just make the commander Progenitus. Yes, Progenitus would always be the best one to swing with, but 9 games out of 10, you won't be able to summon him. And then it has the flavor of anyone can hold the sword and sometimes win with it, but the big dragon is the ultimate back up plan if the rest of the kingdom fails.

    A deck I ended up quite disappointed in was Syr Gwyn knight tribal. The conclusion I basically came to was she was not a knight commander, she was an equipment commander that happened to have some trinket text about knights on the side and I scrapped the deck in a fit of frustration after building it and trying it out a few times to find that, as I suspected, I could not fit equipment and a tribal strat in the same place with my building style. I ended up trying to make the deck in Orzhov with Aryel but that kept running into the problem that I just ran out of cards and no amount of card advantage seemed to fix the problem. I ended up stripping the parts I could use elsewhere about the time Crimson Vow released so I could use the lands and generic tribal cards for new Edgar vampires. Which itself is now slated for teardown for similar problems and the realization that I just have tribal decks now that do the aggressive beatdown thing better (thinking of you, Tovolar). Complete opposite end of the scale: I like aggressive decks by Arcades, the Strategist was TOO MUCH and TOO FAST.

    Joey I had the same problem as you when building the Asmira deck. But I figured how how to fix and and now it works great! The solution was to remove all sac outlets and instead make it a self destruction deck, meaning adding only creatures with built in sacrifice (Sakura-Tribe Elder/ Foundation Breaker etc) and creatures with evoke, echo etc. And also adding a couple of more Asmira creatures like Lumberknot and Algae Gharial. Oh and as a bonus im adding a challenge the stats here: "Pure Reflection" only sees play in 3 Asmira decks on EDHREC. Its an enchantment that constantly creates creature tokens that almost guaranteed will get destroyed on each players turns triggering Asmira on every turn. This is a card I really should see more play in Asmira decks :)

    I feel the Glen / Wrexial / Lazav / Geth problems. I made a Ghost of Ramirez de Pietro / Armix Filigree Familiar deck, focused on Ramirez getting cards back that I’ve discarded or milled. I meticulously sculpted the cards in it and built it, and played it, and it did its thing! For several turns! And then someone else won the game, because the deck’s thing was just … a little value? Benefiting from discarding cards? The impact on the game was small, and the deck didn’t end up mattering in the game.

Skulking under an opponent's board and then increasing Glenn's power with repeatable temporary effects seems like a cool and unique voltron strat. • @zackkelley2940
    @zackkelley2940 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Problem with Asmira is that you have a Selesnya commander that wants to do Abzan things. There's almost no support in w/g for anything evenly vaguely resembling aristocrats. There's virtually nothing that cares about your creatures dying and only very limited ways to bring them back. Most recursion in w/g tends to be either back to your hand or bringing back low cmc creatures on your upkeep. Add black and suddenly you have everything Asmira wants.
    I have an Anafenza deck where I run Asmira and Shirei in the 99. Get those two on the field and suddenly you have an unending deluge of death triggers and an angel that just.. keeps... getting... meaner^^

    I played a Goblin deck back in Onslaught block and loved winning with Skirk Fire Marshal. I never took apart the deck until I began playing Commander just a few years ago. After building a Kamahl, Fist of Krosa deck, as my first attempt, I really, really, really wanted to build a deck around Skirk Fire Marshal. But, not being legendary and not having access to white, meant I needed another Commander. Basically the deck was supposed to look like a janky Boros goblin deck, and then would tutor up the Fire Marshal and unload a hand full of damage doublers, protection spells, and untap effects, and deal 40 to each creature and each player. It theoretically could pull it off, but almost always presented another path to victory faster. Being able to prevent damage to or grant protection for a board of goblin tokens usually means you should just start swinging in. Having your creatures consistently protected means your Blasphemous Act type effects are always one sided. And tutoring for a creature in Boros is just not efficient. I added green, eventually, once I could use Rocco to fetch my secret commander. I built Jared Carthalion, True Heir, and he had a bunch of those damaged based board wipes, too, and I eventually decided that one was more worth my while, combined the two, and gave up on the Fire Marshal. It was the first time I gave up on a deck, and I still feel sad thinking back on it.

    The Tymaret deck really reminds me of one I've desperately been trying to pull off, Subira Infect. The idea was to have a haste enabler, drop a creature with infect, make it unblockable with Subira, then beef it up for leathal, extra points for being able to take out 2 or even 3 opponents in one turn.
    It's possible, but it's just not consistent, and looks like a really pathetic mono-red aggro deck most of the time. Half the people that I've played with think I don't understand what mono-red aggro is supposed to look like, because they've never seen it go off. The other half know that I'll spend most of the game as an easy target so they can kill me easily before I go off. On top of everything, Subira has a decent draw ability, but when you're waiting to combo off, discarding your hand for value suddenly stops being as acceptable a price to pay, so I also need someway to work around that.
    I'm hoping to make it work someday, but I feel like I need to at least wait long enough for my playgroup to forget about what it is trying to do before I give it another go, which makes me not that motivated to try to brew with it for the time being.

    Matt I went through the exact same thing you did with your Araumi deck with my Pinger deck. At its heart it is an Izzet deck and I used to run Niv-Mizzet the Firemind as the commander. It FELT perfect. The problem was it was way too slow and needed more untap cards during other's turns that only green could provide. I fought with myself for months because I had never added a color to a deck before (I have gone down colors and that feels different, more ok for some reason?) So now it is Riku of Two Reflections deck. It's still mostly izzet but with the few green cards I needed to make it hum. I almost never cast Riku but there is not really a Pinger commander in these colors so he is just there for color identity, and occasionally I can double up on my pingers so that helped me justify using him as the commander. It is my favorite deck but man, if I can ever have just a few more aoe untap cards in blue, I will revert it to an Izzet deck because that is what it is for me.

      tymaret's second ability is actually more interesting to me than going aristocrats tbh, ive been thinking of making a self discard deck where i keep returning him to my hand and discarding him for red rummage and other good value cards

    • @dislikebutton9571
      @dislikebutton9571 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      with necromancer's stockpile you can discard tymaret, make a zombie and draw a card, then sac the zombie and use tymarets ability to return him to your hand. 4 mana draw a card, so not very good, but it gives you an etb and death trigger along the way and its an instant speed mana sync.

    I couldn't make Mairsil the Pretender work. I loved that it was odd and potentially powerful and combo oriented. The downside is that it's weak to graveyard hate and really weak to artifact hate. Vandalblast, Bane of Progress, and noncreature boardwipes just kill the deck. Kroxa, Titan of Death's hunger was difficult too. Now there's several more cards for that deck than a few years ago. It's just kind of expensive to build.

    43:00 you could try to build It around combat tricks, if you attack with a 1/3 skulk Is very effettive, but After blockers are declared you punp him up with some instant combat tricks, you draw lots of cards and refuel for the next Attack, idk if this could be a valutable strategy, but I think it's a unique idea for WU

    May i recommend a "Korona the false god" commander for your exalted style!
    That way you'd want a lot of creatures sometimes and you wouldn't always have control of your commander. Then your other creatures would have their chance to shine more likely.
    Obviously use vows and other cards effects that make you not be able to be attacked or have other players incentivized to be the one(s) attacked.
    Fun deck

I've thought about doing this with the mono blue shrine creature but it just being a mill deck seems kind of boring tbh.

Not only does mono-black not work well for group hug, but Nightmare Moon's ability doesn't really work with the Commander format (since "wish" effects don't work). Quite a shame.

    • @the1only1witness
      @the1only1witness 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dorsalfin22 Yea, having access to multiple colors helps. What really made Golos insanely strong for a lands deck was the ability to put utility lands into play at instant speed. Flickering Golos to get out Bojuka bog in response to someone about to combo with their graveyard always felt amazing. Or flickering to grab Glacial Cavern when someone was going to swing at me for lethal was too fun. Plus the colorless casting cost and the ensured land fetch allowed me to way reduce the cost of the deck (ie, I didn't need fetches and other expensive ways to fix mana since I could always grab World Tree after casting Golos if I needed colors) and it allowed me guaranteed access to some of my wincons (primarily Field of the Dead).
      I'll miss that deck for sure. I haven't built or played any other deck that has had the same ability to deal with any kind of strategy without counter magic like that deck could. I literally just took it apart a few days ago to take out key $ pieces to use in other decks.

    In general, I have yet to make a Izzet commander deck work for me. Spellslinger isn't something I really have a lot of experience with or really gravitate to, and I would like to have one where it doesn't feel like a pile of goodstuff and that is how every spellslinger deck I look at looks like and it bugs me. The other thing with Izzet commanders, some of them really push you towards artifact decks, and maybe it's because at one point I had a Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain cheerios deck and I just hated how good that deck turned out to be and how long those turns turned into, so I have kind of sworn off artifact decks period. So I am waiting to find an Izzet commander that breathes some fresh air into that guild.

    Been in the middle of trying to make a jund lifegain deck for a while. Secret commanders and inspiration are Gyome and Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar but I never want to be the one to ask for special permission partners and every other jund commander that I've looked at falls into sacrifice matters. So the decklist just has too many themes of food tokens, and discard, and treasure tokens and graveyard reanimator and clue tokens so I just keep getting lost in there being an embarrassment of riches. Hoping the next set will be the one to help me find focus.

    With Sunscape Familiar or Nightscape Familiar in play, alongside Morophon, I'll be casting PPs for free.
    Beast Whisperer, Zendikar Resurgent, Soul of the Harvest, Primal Sage, and I'll be drawing and playing and drawing and playing and...
    Bloodbond March will mass recur my PPs, and free sac outlets will call for a reckoning.
    There are planeswalkers who can untap all my creatures, like Jace, Ingenious Mind-Mage and Gideon, Martial Paragon.

    I'm surprised about your difficulties with Wrexial as I feel like my Wrexial deck performs really well. Maybe it's the play pattern: I usually don't cast my big kraken friend until he's protected and ready to end the game, after I've filled the graveyards and have pieced up the sequence that will lead me to victory (extra turns and extra combats spells are the key). My deck fills up my own graveyard along with my opponents, so if there's nothing meaty in theirs, I can reanimate beefy creatures from my own. I love that the power level of Wrexial scales with the power level of my opponents. I remember a game against a table that had much stronger decks than mine, and once I felt the shields were down, I just sequenced 3 extra turn spells to victory from their graveyards.

    For Matt's Glenn deck, I'd love to see it built around as a weird Azorius Maro deck. You'd kind of be ignoring the skulk thing and relying on different unblockability, but having Glen with Double Strike and enchantments and equipment like Righteous Authority and Empyrial plate would allow for some very novel wins out of nowhere when you have a full grip of cards. Glen smashes for 8 in first strike damage, draws you eight cards, then smashes for 16 for the knockout.
    Could be pretty cool. I hope Matt finds a way with this one!
