  • Join us on the latest episode of Talking with Docs as we dive into the intriguing world of shingles, a viral infection that affects millions of people worldwide. In this episode, our esteemed medical experts explore the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for shingles, providing invaluable insights to help you understand and manage this often-painful condition.
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. Our doctors discuss how the virus lies dormant within the body after a person recovers from chickenpox and can resurface later in life, leading to the development of shingles. They shed light on the factors that can trigger this reactivation, including age, weakened immune system, stress, and certain medical conditions.
During the episode, our medical experts delve into the telltale signs and symptoms of shingles, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis. They outline the characteristic rash, often accompanied by intense pain, itching, and a tingling sensation. The doctors also touch upon the risk of complications such as postherpetic neuralgia, where pain persists long after the rash has healed, and other potential complications involving the eyes, ears, and nervous system.
In their comprehensive discussion, our doctors explore various treatment approaches for shingles. They shed light on antiviral medications that can help shorten the duration of the illness and reduce the severity of symptoms, as well as the importance of seeking prompt medical attention. Furthermore, they highlight the role of pain management techniques, including over-the-counter and prescription medications, to alleviate discomfort and improve quality of life during the recovery process.
Whether you or a loved one have experienced shingles or simply want to expand your medical knowledge, this episode of "Talking with Docs" offers invaluable information straight from the experts. Join us as we unravel the mystery of shingles, empowering you with the knowledge to recognize, treat, and prevent this common yet often misunderstood condition.

I had chickenpox at age 7. Imagine my surprise when my doctor - a primary care family doctor - asked why I thought I needed the shingles vaccine series at age 57. She said I'd be immune from shingles bc I'd had chickenpox. She is no longer my doctor, and yes, I DID get the vaccines.

I got chicken pox in my third trimester with my second child. I got them from my older son. My OBGYN explained that the baby could be born with chicken pox but I could die. They helicoptered some serum to the hospital and I received 3 injections. I am happy to say we were both fine and I got the shingles vaccine as soon as I turned 50. I watched my grandmother and father suffer greatly with multiple bouts of shingles. And even though I am adopted I wasn’t taking any chances!

Thank you doctors. I developed Shingles on my face in 2019. I am a Registered Nurse in the States. I knew I had Shingles, thought I would lose my vision and went directly to me Ophthalmologist. He put me on the antiviral. I used lidocaine and Tylenol for pain and face oil to keep my face from getting dry and itchy, I asked my doctor about the vaccine and he recommended it 6 months post shingles. You better believe I got the vaccine 2 rounds of it. The first 6 months after I got the Shingles then another 1 year post Shingles. The Shingles hurt and I never want them again. I was under a lot of stress at the time. My mom had entered Hospice and died a few weeks later. It was really hard to have Shingles on top of all of that. My vision is fine! I was really lucky to have no eye involvement.

Wow. I had no idea shingles could affect vision. I am Deaf and my vision is extremely important to me. I now have cancer at 32 years old and apparently the stress from having cancer and its treatments can trigger shingles. I had chicken pox so bad I was hospitalised. I am absolutely deathly afraid of sharps so I have been putting off the vaccine. I didn’t have the covid vaccine either. Now I am worried for my vision so I might go and get this vaccine(if I can at my age in my country)! I am so sorry you lost your mum like that.

I had shingles 5 years ago, at 40. I also have ME/CFS meaning I didn't even notice it due to the pain being the same I already had daily. The only thing that gave it away was the intense itching and red bumps. The Doctor dismissed it at first, then asked a colleauge and I got the diagnose.
I had chicken pox, fairly normal, nothing big. My brother on the other hand had to spend a week in hospital since the rash was everywhere, including inside his throat. Many people don't even consider the fact that it can be fatal.

I was a child that attended a chicken pox party thanks to my Mother, when I was 4 years old in 1964 and did get them, so did my brother. When I was 56 years old, under some heavy stress, I got shingles out of the blue and it came on with a fury. THE WORST PAIN EVER, aside from child birth that is. It was on the top of my head trailing into my eyes. Had to go to eye doctor to make sure the shingles weren't shedding in my eye, at the time, they were not. It lasted 3 weeks, horrible intense pain, headache, nausea, light hurt my eyes, blurred vision, fever, just wanted to sleep. After it was over, I found out I got glaucoma. Now at 64 years old, I STILL have itching at the site where the shingles were the worst, at my forehead hairline. I know it looks like I have bugs as I scratch frequently, but it feels genuinely like millions of ants or spiders crawling on my head in that spot - 8 years after having shingles. The nerve affected by the shingles are still not right. may never be the same. Definite damage. No People, you definitely never, ever want shingles. On a good note; I did read somewhere that those around me during that time, are now exposed to it and their immune systems are acquainted with the virus and can (hopefully) prevent them from getting it.

Currently going through Shingles, age 35 and immunocompromised (for treatment of Crohn's disease). Started out as intense flank pain on my right side. I almost never take pain meds normally, and the pain was so intense it had me reaching for an old vicodin prescription in my medicine cabinet. Went to a doctor who checked my urine, said it's back pain and sent me home with an Rx for muscle relaxers. Literally the say after I started getting a rash at my backside, which I at first thought was from agitation from running my heat pad so much for the back pain. But the rash kept spreading and spreading and exploded across the right side of my body (front and back, very sporadically on my side). Finally I reached out to a doctor again who immediately knew what it was and prescribed me Acyclovir. Thankfully the initial flank pain is mostly gone and pain from the rash has so far been manageable, even though by surface area it's covering a pretty big area of my back. Thank you for the video, very informative! Wish I had this information a little sooner 😭

If I had known there was a possibility to prevent getting this illness I would have taken it. So please if you can, take that . Getting to be that ill is terrible.

I got a rash over a month ago, (while on vacation, and yes, I had been under a lot of stress & depression) at first it looked like little raised dots, similar to being bitten by an ant or spider several times. After about a week it looked worse, so I went to a pharmacy and the pharmacist said they thought it was shingles. It was uncomfortable, sometimes, but not awful. The next day went to a hospital walk in clinic. The Doctor didn't think it was shingles because it was on one side, but I had showed him under my arm were a few pimple looking spots (I think from heat) so he said it can't be on both sides. Prescribed a steroid cream and penicillin, saying it was a rash that got infected. It did start to look better. When I got home and showed my Dr she said it was shingles and prescribed an antibiotic cream. It has gotten better, but the places where the blisters were is deep and a thick scab grew, which seemed worse. I stopped the anitbiotic cream and started just using vaseline. The scabs fell off and it is very slowly looking better, but I think it will have a scar. I would say that the pain is worse now, just on the spot on the right front, just below my breast. Not all the the time, but many times a day .
I am going to get a vaccine, but should I wait for awhile? I've also put off doing a mamogram just because I don't want anything touching that area. Any suggestions about when to get a vaccine?

11 years ago my Dad had shingles. I was 42 at the time and had not had chicken pox (my parents didn’t believe in pox parties due to the possible risks). I caught the virus from my Dad even though we were very careful (we didn’t realize just how contagious it is). When I was 50 they approved a vaccine for 50 and over so I got it right away. I didn’t want to go through what my Dad went through (his shingles was over his neck and side of his face, but stopped just before his eye), he was in so much pain! My mother, grandmother, aunts, etc. have all gotten shingles so I made sure I got the vaccine. The first shot didn't bother me in the least but the second, kicked me hard! I didn't break out, but I even had a fever. That all lasted a good week. My mother had a very severe case of shingles. Her entire torso, both front and back, both sides, and down both arms were covered. It took months for all the blisters to heal, and she was left with a lot of scaring. My mother had permanent nerve damage (Postherpetic neuralgia you mentioned) that lasted for the rest of her life. She was unable to take warm showers and certain material in her clothing caused pain. After seeing her, my grandmother, and others suffer, I made sure I got the vaccine. I sure hope I never get it or anyone else!

I was one of the few people I have ever known that had shingles when I was just 25 y.o. I was a young mother of a child with a genetic life-threatening disease, worked full time and went to night school. No big surprise, I was stressed and run down. It was awful. Not only the pain at the site of the rash, but I had a splitting headache for days, and just generally felt awful. Hard when you have a toddler. This was in the '70's, so not treatment of any kind back then. Just was told I had to live with it until it passed. EGAD! That event was actually what convinced me to start running and take better care of myself. Still running at almost 70. Thank you shingles. 😆

For the first time in my life, i got shingles. Never confirmed by a doctor bcos the day it appeared was after i saw him due to terrible pain along my right arm. My skin got a weird feeling to it , like a current flowing over it. I kept telling the young doc the pain has spread along my shoulder blade n front chest. The doc has no clue but took blood test , ecg n xray that day. Blood test was normal . They thought i overworked and stressed myself. He gv me 4 days MC . Well, that night i saw pink rashes under my upper arm but thought i was allergic to antibiotic. I should gone back to the doc n show him the rash but didnt bcos i thought it was nothing serious. The rash turned to blisters then start to darken in the centers. The day i came back to work I showed my nurse colleague and a doctor on duty . They confirmed what i had slowly suspected . Now the ugly blisters has dried up n shrunk. I am now trying to reinforce my immune system, bcos now I know what had triggered my immune system to become weak. Thks for reading my elaborate experience.

First, thank you for all your TKR vids. My Ortho Doc released me after one year check-up. All your info helped me heal as well as possible!
Got dose 1 of the 2 dose vaccine last May. Three days later, I had shingles symptoms on the outside of my left thigh. I am one of the "lucky" ones that had a reaction. It was a wake-up to those that have not vaccinated yet. A minor case of shingles symtoms is STILL way better than the full-blown version! My leg cleared up in about a month, and I will get dose 2 at the end of September. Hope I don't get a reaction then, but if I do I will deal with it.

A subset of shingles is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome RHS is when shingles appears in a cranial nerve. I had this in 2018. For the first 10 days the only symptom I had was extreme vertigo and an ear ache that had no outward appearance of anything wrong. Toward day 10 other symptoms such as burnt feeling on my my tongue. And finally on day 13 the right half of my face was paralyzed. It was at that point I went into the Hospital and it took 5 doctors to determine RHS. Because one tiny vesticle was just starting to show way inside my ear. And as mentioned because I didn’t have the correct medication I was severely injured by how long the disease ran rampant. Please everyone be aware of this version of shingles. So ocular shingles isn’t the ONLY critical shingles on the head. I was diagnosed at 51!! Other symptoms include loss of taste, hemifacial paralysis (Bell’s palsy). I have permanent balance damage. I lost hearing in the affected ear and have permanent facial paralysis!!! Luckily she didn’t suffer any damage to the optic nerve, and doesn’t have any postherpetic nerve pain or any other lingering side effects. They were extreemly painful, as if insects are pinching my face in waves. At that point I went to the doctor and he diagnosed it pretty fast and gave me antiviral tablets and creams to ease the pain.
During the week I was on it my fave swelled up really bad, and I had blisters everywhere on my face(on the right side). Shingles mostle affect one side of a body part. Eventually, the swelling went down and the blisters dried up. I then had scars for about 3 months. But they cleared up.
But, I still have a scar to this day because I tried scratching one of the blisters when I had no idea it was, and thought it was a pimple.

Hi! I was 36 when Shingles paid me a visit. We were getting to go on a trip to celebrate my hubby beating cancer. My workplace had heaped lots of work on me two days before we left and I was overwhelmed trying to finish it all. Going to a doctor when I wasn’t at home in Canada was a bit scary too (it was our first cruise…super expensive to visit Sick Bay). During the week we were on board the ship, I also had a lung infection and a bladder infection too due to my immune system being AWOL. I visited Sick Bay every morning to monitor what was going on. Had phantom pain in my shoulder for 6 months. Every once and awhile when stress starts, I pause, remember the Shingle pain then calm down. Thanks for getting the word out about the vaccine 💉 as it really just isn’t an “old people’s disease”. Hope your wife feels better soon! Thanks also your all the knowledge you two freely share with us. ❤️

I’m 57 and had shingles. It was extremely painful. I ended up having shingles on my left shoulder where I had shoulder surgery. I thought I was experiencing pain just from the surgery after a year , but than I started getting a rash on my shoulder. So when I went to the doctor that’s when I was diagnosed with shingles. I had to weigh it out for a month. It was HORRIBLE !! The pain was excruciating!! I will definitely be getting my vaccine because I do not want a recurrence.

It was monstrously painful! I had it on my lower left arm and left rib cage and abdomen. That was 22 yrs ago and it still spooks me that even with the shingles vax it might come back. I'm 69 and really do not want a second visit from that virus monster. My arm and body were an oozing mess and very hard to care for and contain the mess. Lots of gauze, scrip creams and pills. At least it was summer and I could wear very loose clothes. Amazingly, the shingles ended abruptly after 6 weeks. Just like someone flipped a switch off. Over night everything got dry, no more oozing. Within 4 days only pinkness on skin remained. I never had pain after and I am so thankful for that.

Likely a misdiagnosis by the pediatrician. You cannot get shingles before Chicken pox as it is the same virus. Chicken pox is the first contraction/outbreak of varicellla-zoster Virus (VZV). Shingles are the subsequent outbreaks of the same virus that lays dormant as the doctors explained in the video. There are MANY skin conditions that can look like shingles - as they produce blisters on the skin - most common being allergies, forms of dermatitis, and cellulitis.

Then I had a few bumps behind my ear the looked like bites. The next day there was quite a few more abd I thought it was an eczema flare up . The next day they became more like blisters and I knew it was shingles. Went to urgent care and got on Acyclovir asap. The rash lasted over 2 weeks but I ended up with Post Herpatic Neuralgia which lasted a few more weeks. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. If you are due for a shingles vaccine do not put it off!!

On Memorial Day 2018, I bumped the top of my head on the overhang of my house while leaning forward to water some flowers that were planted beneath it. It hurt at that moment & I peppered my front lawn with some very colorful words; but I really though no more about it. Two days later, I started having pain in & around my left eye. As the day went on, the pain in my eyeball itself progressed to the point where it felt 1000 times worse/stronger than any ice cream headache/brain freeze that I had ever had. I was so beside myself with pain! Later that day, I developed severe itching & redness all around my left eye, in my left eyebrow & the left side of my nose. Also, my eyelids were also swelling shut! Uncertain if I really *did* have an injury from bumping my head or if I had some sort of ‘eye illness’ going on, I wasn’t sure if I should contact my PCP or my ophthalmologist. Fortunately, I made the correct decision & my ophthalmologist wanted to see me ASAP. No matter how insignificant the details were, I related the whole story to him. He quickly diagnosed me with Eye Shingles! To him, the sequence of events perfectly painted a clear conclusion! He explained that when I bumped the top of my head, I ‘woke up’ the dormant Herpes Virus that was hanging out on my Optic Nerve for decades, leafing to Eye Shingles.
Because the period of time between bumping the top of my head to my presentation in my ophthalmologist’s office was within 3 days, he felt that prescribing Valtrex would lessen the severity of the Shingles. I am to take Valtrex for the rest of my life, because I am immune compromised. I have MS & I’ve had my colon surgically removed due to another disease process. I did have Chicken Pox at age 15, long before there was a preventative vaccine. Oddly though, I *did* have Shingles around my torso about 5 years prior. I was on the ‘waiting list’ at my pharmacy to receive the Shingles Vaccine at the same time as I got Eye Shingles. The vaccine was very hard to obtain at that time. By the way I am 70 years old.
I hope that by sharing my story, at least one person benefits. Any anomaly with your eyes is always considered an emergency & you should seek medical attention immediately!
Thanks for reading my story. 😊

    • @carolmackowiak752
      @carolmackowiak752 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Oh! I neglected to tell this final fact : Eye Shingles left me with Post-Herpatic Neuralgia all along the path of my Optic Nerve on the left side of my face. My PCP has prescribed the strongest acceptable dose of Lyrica (Pregabalin). This is a lingering painful side effect of Shingles that *not* everyone gets.
I’d also like to mention that within just a few days of being diagnosed with Eye Shingles, I got a phone call from my pharmacy informing me that it was now ‘my turn’ to receive the Shingles Vaccine! What irony; but, you better believe it-with a swollen, painful eye, I took myself to my pharmacy & got my Vaccine! Two days from today, I’ll be getting my annual Flu Shot & Covid Booster Vaccine. If it is recommended, I’ll also receive a 2nd Shingles Vaccine/Booster. Thanks again for reading my story. I hope this at least helps ONE person! 😊

I, had shingles last year, aged 60. I'm sure it was caused by stress. I had blisters left sided on my head and in my face, including eye lid. Fortunately the inside of my eye wasn't affected. This caused my worst ever head aches including nausea and fever. I was prescribed anti viral medicine and over the counter pain killers. I didn't feel that any of the medicine relieved my symptoms. I probably went to the doctor too late (about 3 days after the first symptoms). The worst pain and the blisters cleared up over about 10 days but some symptoms like itchiness on the left side of my scalp which caused pain when scratching, remained for several months.

I had intermittent episodes of iritis over the years and had a standing order for prednisone eye drops from the ophthalmologist. Thankfully no flareups in a while but still ruined right vision. It took me years to convince the doctor's assistant that she WAS NOT going to get me corrected to 20/20 on the right.

I was dealing with skin cancer when I was diagnosed with shingles. My doctor got right on it. I took an anti-viral pill in his office and then he treated the rash aggressively by having me take lukewarm baths with something he gave me to put in the bath water, which were followed by a skin cream that he prescribed. I sailed through that. I wish I could have sailed through the skin cancer as easily as I did the shingles.

Day six back to the hospital and shingles was finally recognized (reddened skin but no vesicles yet) - too late for antiviral to be effective. From my spine to my sternum, entire armpit down to almost my elbow and across the top of my breast, with several moles involved. The most sustained agony I've ever experienced or hope to experience.
