  • This unexpected video is made far more informally than usual but I wanted to bring you the news as soon as possible and therefore hope you will forgive the hand held shots and busy layout background.
Given the recent sadness over Hornby’s poor quality control this new model seems to shout “We have listened” I certainly hope so because if this is the standard going forward the hobby will be better for all of us
Do Check out Sams Trains full review of this model.

Be nice to think that Hornby have seen the light and got their quality control house in order. There is no doubt that given the prices of new locos we are entitled to expect that they are good quality

  • @bluebellModelrailway

Should run like a dream. This is the first Hornby model I have come across that has a proper large diameter flywheel, which does what a flywheel should, and that is to allow the model to "run on". I have two of them as a result, and after careful running in, they will both "run on" a good 18 inches each, if you cut the power to the track. In other words the flywheel doesn't just smooth the motor as in other Hornby flywheel models, it actually allows the model to cruise gently to a halt, over a decent distance. The whole chassis construction is also totally different from any previous steam model. As Hornby's products are now made in the PIKO plant (Ex East German Manufacturer) near Canton, China (since about 2015). I suspect this new chassis is a result of changes to PIKO's own range, by their German design team.

The B12 was a similar runner, that is an absolutely perfect one. And seeing how that one's already a few years old, my hopes aren't high for Hornby to have suddenly turned a new leaf, but when they hit it out of the park, they really do all-out.

Don’t think hornby have changed on quality look at the A2/2 which people are reporting has had bits falling off, warped running plates, the livery is wrong just to name a few, in my opinion the rebuilt versions of the merchant navy from the early 2000s to about 2006 are far superior when it comes to quality and performance and it is something that no matter how hard hornby try they will never surpass that.

It's true that Hornby are capable of producing a decent model but the problem is that quality is not consistent. The Hush Hush for example was a insult to the customer paying grossly inflated prices as the retailers were limited and could only be purchased directly from Hornby as Sam's Trains experienced to his cost. Paying top prices and having it poorly packaged is simply unacceptable. Another problem Hornby should address is keeping their best models in the range for longer. Most notably the Standard Class 6 Clan Class and the Crosti 9f which even though was part of the Railroad range was one of the best.

A Hornby product perfect out of the box!! I think Simon Koehler must have paid you for this review?
Seriously, I will need more evidence that Hornby quality has become significantly improved and is consistent before I will purchase their product again. Everything I purchase from this company is faulty and prices are now becoming very inflated (Hornby not alone in this respect) I used to rely on the tech support at Hersden to rectify any problems but even that has gone to pot in the last twelve months, guess they will blame Covid, convenient. Spare motors are still an issue ( oh how I have suffered with that S15).
Sorry to sound sceptical, I truly hope Hornby have turned the corner and I hope your MN continues to please however, I will be watching to see if motor issues appear in particular and if others report problems.

I've already watched Sam's review of the blue engine. He was the first TH-camr I got to know, and was also the inspiration behind my own channel, Kelly Ashford Trains. A long time ago, before I had a home to call my own (and this laptop), I was looking at the TH-cam main home page. I came across a video thumbnail I'd never seen before, and saw the logo Sam's Trains in the top left hand corner.
"What's Sam's Trains?" I asked myself in silence. "Who is Sam?" I clicked on the thumbnail and the video gave me the answer. Seeing Sam was a railway modeller of sorts, and loved steam engines as much as me, I subscribed to his channel and gave his video a like. He and I have been best TH-cam friends ever since, and I can't thank him enough for showing me how to become a member of his channel. I'm at the top of the membership ladder: Chief Mechanical Engineer. I don't know what I'd do without him, considering I love to scare him out of his wits with ghost train and gunpowder van requests. That's only in jest, not deliberately. That's the story of how Sam's Trains and I met each other on TH-cam.😂

Lovely example Mike. You know, I've never had a bad running loco from Hornby, new or used. Sometimes the detail is sub par, but I have been lucky I suppose. Bachmann on the other hand, that's another story. I know there are some bad Hornby models, they just haven't come my way. I'm pushing my luck now that I have said it. Steven.

I haven't bought anything for years now, it's all becoming too expensive. Your Merchant Navy loco does look stunning, and appears to run wonderfully, that is one huge flywheel they put in that thing, but is one great loco enough to say that Hornby have turned a corner? Have a look at the reviews, there are many of the Thompson A2/2, there was a whole list of issues with those. Anyway, out of the two, I still prefer the rebuilt version. All the best and thanks Dave.

    • @ModelRailwaysUnlimited
      @ModelRailwaysUnlimited  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Dave, yes a good point, but I feel if they can do it, then why don't they consistently do it? Keep hearing about different factories doing the work for them, surely they can just switch to the one that does a good job thus avoiding all this angst?

Delighted you're impressed. I was saddened to be honest when many years ago, they transferred their production to China, and I want to be their biggest fan because I kind of feel you should support a British (legacy) company. I feel that they kind of lost their way, and failed to react when other competitors started to produce better quality models. All you want it is a relatively faithful reproduction, but decent performance is the most important thing. I've seen some of Sam's Trains' blogs, and it seems that the likes of Bachmann can't even get performance correct. Hornby should just do their homework and produce detail but with good performance and quality built-in. If you want stupid-money kit, then you buy custom or build your own. Hornby is still relatively good value for money, and they will keep custom, if, as you alude to here, performance of the models is good enough. Get the basics right.

Gorgeous to look at and see moving. That flywheel is brilliant as I was wondering how they were so smooth running until you opened the can. Only problem for a Bulleid fan is modelling in N and no space or time to upscale. So I’ll console myself saying, ‘They are just too darn’ squeaky clean!’ Thanks for showing!

A lovely model to be sure, having handled one at the shop - admittedly we have had a couple of broken detail issues, though nothing especially major or even notable.
Hornby do surprise us sometimes with nice models but, as much as I hate being a downer... how often is it that the quality remains long term? I guess only time will tell, but if Hornby does happen to hold up, I’ll certainly be astonished and will eat my words!

Love it, absolutely stunning loco - And nice to hear your enthuse over this model - "Absolutely nothing wrong with it" you said - Thing is Mike, there shouldn't be anything wrong with it or any of their models for that matter, it's not like they're "giving" them away... they cost a small fortune. No it was not for streamlining that is a very common misconception they were like this to allow the locomotive with its train the ability to be taken through a carriage wash they were built during the war and there wasn’t the time to clean them by hand so they built them all smooth so they wouldn’t damage the carriage wash which a regular steam engine would do if they were washed like that.
