Which EV Charging Network Has the Fastest Handshake?

  • Since we have a Chevy Bolt and a Tesla Model 3, we thought it would be good to get time on the handshake ant different charging networks. The handshake is the time that it takes for charging to initialize. We compared Electrify America, EVGo, and a Tesla Supercharger with the Magic Dock.

Ford Plug & Charge on Tesla Superchargers is about 12 seconds for the handshake. Fastest handshake I've ever seen as a CCS driver. It proves all the other CCS stations just waste our time.

It would be interesting to test the handshake time for CCS charging the Tesla,
and also L2 public charging such as ChargePoint.

Why would a Tesla want to charge at a CCS charger… just sayin.. I have never had to charge at anything other than a supercharger.. and it’s instantaneous for my model S.. and superchargers are so plentiful….

Very interesting, thanks for sharing that. I've owned an EV for 2 years and never really timed at different chargers.

When you design new systems there's usually a rush to get them implemented and out of the door. Once they're live the developers can then go to work chasing out the latencies, a second here, 500 ms there, maybe a problem with DNS, maybe congestion, maybe bad routing. Who knows? Long way of saying we're in the early days and still getting rid of the bugs. Tesla's in an enviable position of having designed a ground-up, soup-to-nuts, homogeneous system, and having got there first.

So, how fast is the handshake of the Tesla on any of the CCS networks?

    • @SpinnerEV
      @SpinnerEV  หลายเดือนก่อน

Couldn’t test that yet. Don’t have the right adapter. I might be timing the handshake on level 2 plugs though.

Activation time isn't a big deal to me. What is irritating is the charging time of the car. The Bolt charging speeds are tolerable for regional trips where you only have to stop one or two times to charge, but longer distances you start to chew up too much time and in the winter it is much worse. That is really the key differentiator. The reason to use the Tesla superchargers if you are in a CCS car is just knowing they are going to work and there will likely be enough stalls for you to get a charge and not wait around. I only plan to use the Tesla chargers as a plan b fall back should I get in a bind with charger issues. This past winter was a real eye opener for me trying to road trip the Bolt. I may have to give up some efficiency to get the charging speeds, and battery preconditioning with another EV. This time of the year things are fine. Have a regional trip in a few weeks and the Bolt is great for that while the temps are good. That same trip this past winter the range suffers horribly and so did the already slow charging speeds.
That Tesla is going to seem like a dream on your road trip this year. While the charging curve isn't great it still can get you the charge you need in about 30 minutes or less in most cases. You are going to have an awesome trip.

The new EVGo stations using Delta hardware take about as long as the Tesla supercharger when activating Autocharge on my Bolt EUV. So that older ABB unit is actually better

You should do one more Electrify America handshake time measurement. You should start the charger first by swiping in the app before plugging in. That way you can measure handshake time the same way you did with EVgo and Tesla.

I have a bad leg and require assistive devices. Navigating the charging obstructions are difficult enough and get tiresome. The quicker the handshake the better.

I agree that those seconds matter.

One annoying thing is that every EV network and vendor seems to have different orders of swiping cards, tapping an app, selecting the screen, plugging in. They should standardise. Doesnt matter what order but if the order was the same at all, would be so much simpler.

@@Joe-lb8qn Or just go to Plug and Charge. So much more convenient. (I hate faffing with apps, even though I did that with gasoline fueling with a previous car to save money. I've gotten so used to just plugging in, waiting a few seconds, and walking away.)

@@bearcubdaycare unfortunately few cars and CPOs support this at present but yes hopefully that will become much more widespread

Y'all EV owners have a lot of time & patience when it comes to recharging a car. ICE owners are in & out in less than 10 mins.

Nahhh. I mean, if you have a tesla and that is what you are accustomed to at a fast charger, then charge a Chevy Bolt at EA station, you are likely to notice. But if you a IoniQ5 owner as I am and the time it takes to initialize a charge is >< 20 seconds, it's not abnormal. It is what we expect, and we are good with that. Have you had your tesla charge at 200KW before? Anyway, thanks for the video. All the best.

@jacobmaz8157 mine is a base model with the LFP battery. It maxes out at 170 kWh. Coming from a Bolt that would max at 55kWh, the 170 was a huge step up.
