    Gut gemacht;-)) Die SX-70 in der edlen Alu/Leder-Version gehört auch zu meinen Favoriten: very savvy, sophisticated, dazu eine echte SLR, mit Vorsatzlinse bis 1:1 lifesize! Meine sonstige Auswahl ist freilich eine andere - DE GUSTIBUS NON EST DISPUTANDUM (everybody has his own taste)

    Unfortunately like so many vices they are addictive to the point you can't stop yourself.....i class this vice as mechanoptically therapeutic.... from the loading of the desired film type.....composing and taking the shot.....to developing and seeing the fruits of your labors whether they be good or not so good.....it is a hobby i will never give up as long film is available......i have Digital cameras that give highly sharp photo's and won't knock them but if you want dramatically dynamic black and white master pieces use film where possible . In closing i think it was a nice presentation that gave us a lovely insight to a brilliant hobby.

    Pentax MX a jewel of a camera..it was in the running as a candidate for my first film SLR camera back in 1980. I ended up buying a Nikon FM instead because my brother in law had a Nikomat (Japanese market Nikkormat) FT2 and talked me into Nikon. (no regrets..Nikon FM is a great camera). Since then I acquired the camera collecting bug and now have seven cameras (small collection by collector standards): Nikon F, Nikon FM, Nikkormat FT2, Nikon FG, Pentax Spotmatic, Olympus OM-10, and Fujifilm X100F digital. The Nikkormat, Pentax, and Olympus I picked up for cheap at flea markets. Nikon F and FG via online used camera dealers. The only cameras I've bought brand new at full retail price are the Nikon FM and Fujifilm X100F. Love using all my cameras my favorite film cameras are the Nikon F and FM. The Fujifilm is my 'grab and go/travel' camera.

    My first camera was a Premier 35mm, almost a no brand one, almost a toy, but I learned a lot, like not to buy crap! On the side I was learning by myself the tricks of the trade, developing, printing, I even built an Enlarger, and it looked and worked pretty good, my friend heard about that and came over to see what kind of garbage I came up with, but when he lookd at it, he went serious and said: I came to make fun of you, but you left me speechless! 😅 So, when I grew up a little we gather some cash and bought a Pentax ME, which I loved despite the fact that it didn't have aperture control, I had to trick it with Ev + or - ... After that got a Canon AE1... A Yashica-D medium format camera and then I jumped to Digital, with a basic 40D, Nikon d50 and a 7D... After all these years I learned that I had to focus on the final product, not the means... I keep trying, learning, and still don't feel comfortable showing off my pictures, although I get good reviews when I do...

    Zorki-4K is a very good Soviet rangefinder. The viewfinder is light, there is a diopter correction. One bad thing is that the viewfinder is round and it's a bit difficult to build a frame.

    Karin,
    Love seeing & hearing about your collection. I have a smaller collection, but I have used a qualified camera tech to give them a Clean, Lube and Adjust (CLA). Any analog camera is like a fine watch and about every 6 to 10 years (depending on use & storage) they need a servicing. That Pentax MX came out in the early 1980s because there was a trend to make cameras lighter & easier to handle. The grinding you hear just says find a good tech for a clean & lube. What about cost? Fine cameras need occasional service, things get dry and wear. The labor cost in my opinion is not cheap but worth it if you plan to keep & use the gear. Fungus can be removed with mild dilution of water and very little hydrogen peroxide. Most people tend to use gear until it is worn and beyond repair, and there is choice on what to do. But looking at your collection, finding a good tech is a worthwhile investment. Love what you do and your sample images.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment and an insight into your experience! The hint with the CLA is also pretty useful, I think it's important to give cameras a good maintenance. For most of the cameras in my collection I am not sure though if the price is worth it, especially with cameras like the Pentax MX that are not as high in value. I have been to a mechanic to get my M6 CLAed, but luckily it was not necessary since everything was working perfectly fine. I might look into a CLA for my Nikon F3 though and check out prices.

    • @normandong4479
      @normandong4479 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KarinMajoka Karin, I also have a Pentax Spotmatic SPII, which is not worth that much on the retail market. But I liked the quality, handling and superb Takumar lenses enough to have it overhauled. Yes, technical work by qualified people (and they are becoming rare) is not cheap, but I intend to keep & use this Pentax Spotmatic. I have a Leica M3, which also had a CLA, and it might be easier to defend this cost because it is a Leica with its superb Elmer lens. I just purchased a refurbished Minolta SRT202, a tank of a camera but the quality and superb Rokkor lenses tell me the investment was worth it. I shoot with a Nikon FM2, Mamiya 645 and Nikon D90, sometimes in the past with my studio lights and backdrops to raise money for schools. Whatever the goal, there is something about capturing that image, mood and moment. Film-which relies on us and not a microchip-is especially good at capturing these moments. We all have different goals and ways to value our gear, but reliability and long term use are my chief valuations.
      Best wishes and best regards to your shooting. As one photo instructor once taught me: “When you can paint with light what Rembrandt did with a brush, you are good shooter.”

    Regarding your SLRs, particularly the Nikons: I note that you are concerned, rightly, with breakage. Here's a solution: find a Barnack Leica (iiif for example.) It is a fraction of the size and weight of an SLR, you can use it to drive nails, it will not break, and as far as image quality is concerned, it has a Leitz lens. Nuff said. Happy shooting!

    That's a great collection! It's not about 'need' - it's about passion! I currently have 4 film cameras - medium formats Bronica SQ-A and Yashica LM, a 35mm Olympus OM2n and a Pentax Epsio 928 point and shoot. They all have different uses and all get used! It's all about aesthetics, history, the sound and of course the image. I love the 'clunk' of my Bronica - and yes it's my favourite but don't tell the others! Do I need anymore? No. Do I want anymore? Yes! My medium formats are both 6x6 so I want a 6x7! I want to try pinhole photography. The lure of the Leica is strong. I hanker for a Hasselblad 500. And who doesn't love instant! Keep up the fabulous work and beware those frame limes!! Happy New year :)

    All cameras have their “personality”, some are just fun to shoot with and with the huge amount of different kind of films (thanks Lomography) it’s really great to pick up a film and try to figure out what camera that goes with fish ... 32 ASA b/w film, I mean.
    I started out with Soviet cameras and have 7 different kinds (two are really bad though). As for medium size cameras, I found that 9x6 frames are GREAT (Zeiss Ikon Nettar 517/2).
    I also have to admire you for bringing your Leica out. Over here (Sweden), people pay crazy prices for an old Leica and lock in a glass cabinet so it can be looked upon and maybe photographed. It’s here the FEDs, Zorkis and other Soviet made copies comes in ....

      Love the sentence that all cameras have their own personality - could not agree more! I mean, everybody can do what they like, but I don't really see the point in buying a camera to leave it in a cabinet forever. For me cameras are tools that were meant to be used for shooting, therefore none of my cameras are handles like raw eggs, but they get to see some daylight :)

      @@KarinMajoka Some of my cameras are really not good, like the Kiev 35 (Minox copy) or the two 4x4 medium format cameras (and the LOMO 135M). So, some cameras have been used just once. Else I am very much into the Golden Rules of Lomography but try to find a good balance between planning thoroughly (sometimes even use a tripod and a cable release) and "just shoot", being fully aware that whatever is captured on the film was exactly what was meant to be captured.

    Hi Karin,
    Confession time. Should I feel guilt? I have about 15 film cameras (Pentax MX ME, Nikon F, FTn, FE and F3, Olympus OM1, OM2 (black and chrome), 35 RD, XA, XA2, film Pen F, Rolleiflex T, and Canon P. The only digital camera I would mention here is my Fuji XE-1 which feels to me like a film camera. The only camera here that I bought new was my black MX in 1982. This is still pretty much like new. However, in the past I have sold cameras and now regret selling any of them (mint Yashicamat 124G, mint Pentax ME, MX, and Yashica T4. I bought my 124G in 1992 when I had just been made redundant. I intended to start my own photo library and this camera represented a new future for me and my young family. I saw it advertised in a photo magazine and realised that the telephone number given was incorrect. I somehow deduced what was the correct number and found myself sitting in the owners Flat 100 miles away holding a mint copy which had only had a few rolls put through it. I kick myself regularly for selling this about 15 years later when I thought that digital photography was the only way forward. I had to buy my mint Rolleiflex T to make up for this but it still hurts because of the emotional connection with my family.
    I had told my wife that my film collection was complete. However...................I have told myself that a Leica is not tooooooo expensive and the hunt for a 111g is underway. After that there could only be the M3, or 111f? Help!

    • @KarinMajoka

      Oh oh, that sounds like a classical case of GAS - gear acquisition syndrome. But fear not, most of the (analog?) photographers suffer from it, including me haha. Don't punish yourself for selling it, who could have thought that film cameras would experience such a revival? Hope you enjoy your camera collection and find some more that make you happy! :)

    I also found great joy when I lent one of my cameras to my friend when he's interested in analog photography. and that's how I started it actually because my friend gave me a film camera. it's great to pass that torch around :-) random question Karin - if you are going on a trip for say two weeks in Iceland, what cameras would you bring with you?

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's awesome, spread that analog love! :) I sometimes pick up point and shoot or simple SLRs from flea markets even though they might not be worth much, just to have some camera in stock I can gift to friends as well!
      Puuh, that Iceland question is a tricky one! I have been to Iceland (only for 5 nights) a couple of years ago and made the "mistake" to only bring a digital camera. The trip was rather spontaneous and I was living in an area where I could not easily grab film, which is why I did not bother and just went digital, though regret this decision a lot. Nowadays I would probably bring a medium format camera with a normal focal length (in my case a Bronica ETRSi, but something even lighter would be awesome) plus a SLR with a wide angle and a tele lens, as well as something light for hikes (probably my Yashica t4). Most of the sights in Iceland are by the road but not all. What do you plan on bringing to your trip? :)

    Was mich bei Pentax ebenso wie bei Olympus stört: Jede einzelne, die ich hatte, war irgendwann defekt. Schade, weil beide über hervorragende Objektive verfügten (Pentax 3.5/15 zum halben Preis des Nikkor 3.5/15!). Heute sind Pentax-Objektive außerhalb der Normalo-Reihe weit teurer als Nikon, weil seltener zu haben: das superbe 1.8/85 zum Beispiel, das dem Nikkor 1.8/85 ebenbürtig ist, wegen anderer Farb-Charakteristik jedoch einen speziellen Reiz hat, ist heute doppelt so teuer wie ein Nikkor - eben wegen der geringen Verbreitung. Daher habe ich meiner Spotmatic nur das Pentax 2.8/105mm spendiert.

    I am a photographer,, not a camera collector. My wife goes to estate auctions and garage sales, sees a camera and says to herself, "It's cheap and Michael likes cameras!" So now I have a camera collection but only because I'm not sure what to do with broken cameras. Can't sell it and I only know how to drive these things, I don't know what makes them go. So they sit in boxes in the basement. Literally. She went to an estate auction once that did not advertise that they had cameras, so none of the collectors were there. They had a garage full of boxes of cameras, lenses, Flashes, accessories of all shapes and sizes. Everything from half-frame cameras to an 8x10 monorail with four lenses. She filled the car floor to ceiling with boxes of camera stuff and proudly brought it home! It took a while but I sold most of it. (Kept the Rolleiflex New Standard, though.) Say it with me: I am not a camera collector. I do not have a camera collection. I am a photographer and the cameras I own I shoot with. Not all of them every year, true, but I mean to get back to that Petri rangefinder Real Soon Now.
    Good luck. It's a slippery slope you're on. 😉

    Oh, too bad. My Zeiss Contax IIIa is one of my favorite shooters. The finish is absolutely the best of any camera. The 50mm f1.5 Zeiss Sonnar is incredible, and I really like focusing with the side wheel. It seems so much more convenient than focusing on the lens with your left hand. Also, the focus, shutter speed, film advance, and shutter release are all in one place. I guess it is a matter of taste. I on the other hand have never been able to warm up to the over hyped, ridiculously over-priced, doesn't take any better photos Leicas.

    I’ve always wondered if having a collection is a downfall. Reason why i say that is because the collection i have now a lot of cameras don’t get used for a long time or i don’t spend enough time to learn a camera and use it to the fullest. I’ve always wanted to downsize but i can’t lolz i love film cameras and love talking about them when friends ask about them. I’m glad I’m not the only one that like to keep more than 4 cameras lol

    • @KarinMajoka

      I feel you, it’s hard to let some of the babies go! I think it can be both, an advantage and a disadvantage to have a (huge) collection. I think actually one camera of every „category“ (35mm rangefinder, point and shoot, SLR and same for medium format) should actually be enough. But some cameras have a sentimental or collectors value, which easily makes the collection grow. As long as they bring some happiness all is good I think :)

      @@KarinMajoka practice with your medium format and make every shot count. Then your ready , if your already developing your own negatives, with a Paterson tank, there is information on adapting that to 4x5 film. Germany is such a lovely country. I was stationed there 1983 -1992 USAF and live in Eisenburg im Pfalz for 5 yrs. and Bruggen, near the Dutch border for 4yrs. I was so amazed , by the old villages, I started photographing everything in 35mm, then moved to medium format , finally buying a 4x5 the last 2 yrs there. Of course , film and developing costs were cheaper. I still have all those negs and scan them , print for my home. After retiring , the shot weddings and moved to digital. Just recently , I got out my old 35mm cameras, serviced my hassalblad, and tested my 4x5. Currently , I'm shooting 35mm and 6x6, developing the film and scanning to PC .Once I'm comfortable with medium format, and Spring is finally here, ill get the 4x5 out. I live in Massachusetts.
