So sad to hear him remembering Jeremy with them saving up money to buy the DD-5 together... I still wish Mr. Ward was around. The few times they do, Cedric and Omar always talk highly of him. Could only imagine how he would've affected their careers/musical dynamic if he were still around.
Un artista humilde y genial, uno de mis guitarristas favoritos. Y me encanta ver que tenemos todos los latinoamericanos algo en común: ¡genes místicos de la juventud perpetua! 😉
He's so cool. Humble. Talented. I'm also amazed (superficially) at how young (and good) he always looks. He was 39 when this was recorded. That's a good 39.
"Oh yes, Earthquake Devices - The Rainbow Machine....simply because the name is so cute." If that's all he wants to say, I'm fine with it (and it managed to actually make me laugh out loud). Peeps need to quit bitching because "he doesn't seem excited." The video is under 5 minutes, did you really expect him to elaborate on every detail of all his equipment he's being rushed to show? I can see how certain behaviors/attitudes turn people away from artists, but he's being so chill and I don't sense a wink of him being diskish or anything. Plus, there are a few vids of his setup that are pretty cool. In the end though, he's just an artist and doesn't owe you shit.
Ya know, for being a filmmaker, an actor, and musician, Omar is pretty awkward around a camera. Ha, gotta Love that. Anyway, I really appreciate the video Total Guitar! Really awesome, thank you!
I'm surprised he didn't mention this, the Ibanez he's playing now is a recreation of a guitar he bought before the first Bosnian Rainbows tour, he just switched over to the Ibanez this year, it was all the original on the 2012 tours.
I don’t think he said it in order. There are other photos you can see that he just said bottom to top. I thought the same for a while but yea it’s alittle more intricate
I think that the reason why he's not willing to say much about pedals and gear is that he s trying to sort of wash off his mars volta image, where he used to go all geek in interviews about gear ahah
2:40 Omar's open dislike for Jim Ward never ceases to make me laugh. Any time Jim is mentioned or involved in any way he just can't seem to help himself. 😂
Hi . Does anyone have an idea how he makes this beautiful background in Morning Sickness verses ? I guess that is this empress superdelay but I want to know exactly what pedals he used then ? Id appreciate any advice :)
@hueynewt1 Thank you for your reply. I'm a bit confused... Where did I mention TMV? I don't know why all of you attack me. Because I have my own opinion which doesn't support yours. I'm supporting Omar, but I have the right not to like everything he does. If someone wants a normal conversation, just pm me. I bet we could agree on some topics. :-)
@unb77 Nah it aint about me. I just think its silly people like you come in to complain because others are doing better than you. That their choices upset you makes me happy. Thank you.
How so? Did you think The Mars Volta were gonna be like the rolling stones and be playing together at 70 years old. Omar and Cedric were together for 20 years. They moved on. You should too.
And my comment wasn't about me but you still trying to tell me I'm worse than anybody. Your words won't touch me. But you can call me silly, if you're happier then :-). You're welcome. But you're only making your own soul dirtier. Think about it. God bless you.
You mad he's not making music for you bro? All you folks complaining need to make your own music or just listen to old shit. Human being evolve. Not everyone is afraid of change. Remember that when you get nowhere in life.
I think it's stupid to question the motives of such a talented and accomplished artists like omar. i'll admit, i'm not a fan of gender-benders style of vocals, and i wish could jus have the instrumental version of the album--which would be sick--but i cant knock his decisions because he is obviously trying to appeal to something larger than myself
i love omar's guitar work but i dont understand why he was just acting like he didnt want to be there, if you didnt want to do it then dont, but its only meant for your fans like me who actually want to see your gear, was a bit unprofessional in my opinion
Dude, I definitely get you and I've felt the same in other interviews with him but this is not the case, he was all chill and even smiling, and it seemed to me that it was the people interviewing him the ones pointing out what they wanted him to say or talk about and he's just there not knowing what else to say, like well, these are my guitar and pedals, I have them because I like how they sound...
SirToez Omar's kind of a weird dude anyway, definitely an introvert but I see your point. If it was MTV asking him about The Widow and why their songs are so long I'd want him to burn down the interview, but you're right: it's just us guitar nerds watching this. Still, he handled it ok.
i agree with your post but disagree (IN MY OWN OPINION OF COURSE) that his new music is "evolved" or great. i dont really buy into it no more. mars volta had something but burned out and was done i believe in 2006 or 2004 (dpending on who u ask) but i believe 2006 was the end and the last 3-4 albums were not good. they had nice moments but the spirit or ghost was gone and its funny cus they wrote about death of friends and deloused had julio and frances i believe had jeremy spirits. now its w/e
Great artists are humble and they differ from most stuck up artists.. Omar is a great artists
i know you said this 4 years ago, but that will always apply
@@mattgirouard49 I know you said this 4years ago, but this will always apply.
I honestly had no idea that Omar had this personality. He seems so relaxed and easygoing in this interview.
So sad to hear him remembering Jeremy with them saving up money to buy the DD-5 together... I still wish Mr. Ward was around. The few times they do, Cedric and Omar always talk highly of him. Could only imagine how he would've affected their careers/musical dynamic if he were still around.
"Catalina Bread"
Love it
Give us a slice of that Omar!
Un artista humilde y genial, uno de mis guitarristas favoritos. Y me encanta ver que tenemos todos los latinoamericanos algo en común: ¡genes místicos de la juventud perpetua! 😉
Hahaha I started busting out at 1:15 He looks like he's having a lot of fun nowadays and I'm really happy for him.
He's so cool. Humble. Talented. I'm also amazed (superficially) at how young (and good) he always looks. He was 39 when this was recorded. That's a good 39.
Wow, hes had that Boss delay pedal since at the drive in. his commentary throughout this is hilarious
He's looked about 21 for about 21 years, how come?
Indigenous men of this hemisphere age incredibly well.
Omar Rodríguez-López from At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta and some new band Bosnian Rainbows
I love how he is just joking around.
"Oh yes, Earthquake Devices - The Rainbow Machine....simply because the name is so cute."
If that's all he wants to say, I'm fine with it (and it managed to actually make me laugh out loud). Peeps need to quit bitching because "he doesn't seem excited." Tropical Caterpillar if he didn't like it it wouldn't be on his board ffs haha
this is a sort of character omar does you can find videos of him acting like this with his friends he isnt being a jerk lol
loved this. always funny and interesting when he agrees to talk into cameras for people.
I wish we coulda gotten a production version of that Supro-inspired Ibanez. That thing looked cool as fuck.
He is awesome person, and super guitar player/composer!
Ya know, for being a filmmaker, an actor, and musician, Omar is pretty awkward around a camera. Ha, gotta Love that.
Anyway, I really appreciate the video Total Guitar! Really awesome, thank you!

He kinda gives off that review brah vibe and I fucking love it.
I carry your guitar pic in my wallet from when you payed with At The Drive In tour in Nashville. Being over 40 it makes me feel a little cool.
Nice video. The pedal chain order is very unusual and interesting (delay first, early reverb, fuzz almost at the end). Forgot to mention the DL4 haha.
I don’t think he said it in order. There are other photos you can see that he just said bottom to top. I thought the same for a while but yea it’s alittle more intricate
saw BR from 5 feet away.. at times he was dancing on his pedals.. Brilliant
When I saw The Mars Volta live a month ago, I snapped a pretty cool pic of him standing on the pedalboard. Awesome image
But mentioned Jeremy not Jim. How is this a shot at Jim ? When he’s talking about Jim’s cousin ?
Is that guitar on production or just the previous model?
Yep, his guitar, the ORM1, was created in the same vein as the Jet King series.
Yeah it was a 1960s Supro 3/4 scale, and he use the same amp as in TMV : Orange AD30TC or a Vox AC30 (but i'm not sure for this one).
Didn't know it was a custome guitar, been wondering since I saw BR in nottingham last year! also, YAY, i was at this 100 club gig, twas badass :D
AHA!! I thought the writing on the headstock looked different...thanks for the info :)
I need some of that Catalina Bread. A little butter and Marmite and it'll taste great.
why you cut the xplanation for the delay canadian company..== why
Fred Armisen?
Super cool guy
Where can Ibuy the atomic amps studio devil? Id appreciate any help!
Hi . Does anyone have an idea how he makes this beautiful background in Morning Sickness verses ? I guess that is this empress superdelay but I want to know exactly what pedals he used then ? Id appreciate any advice :)
he is funny
i think hes just humoring the idea that hes talking about something as trivial to him as his gear.
You're right. t'was an old Supro Guitar. same sort of setup: Neck Humbucker, volume and tone, and I imagine fat neck and 20 frets.
he still uses Orange amps, just as he did in ATDI and TMV
does anyone exactly know every pedal's ordet he put ?
ex.boss tu3--> superdelay -->and??
Plz help me to figure out!
No wonder his chords cut through the distortion......Massive neck for massive strings and they're flat wounds WOW.
nuke97 he uses massive strings because the scale is so short
love the fact he didnt even mention his line 6 dl4 pedal like literally inches away hahhah
Fernando Gomez he expects you to know what it is and why he uses it
I have so much things to ask him
Quite a few guitarists prefer thicker necks. I know Ian Thornley has talked about him preferring those guitars as well. They just feel better.
That rainbow pedal is fucken cute lol
what about the amp?
we all know who he is, it just sounds as if he was common guitar player
Anyone know what tuning Omar uses with those 13 gauge strings?
Lemonpi3 I think standard
The Puertorican Beast Jonathan Ayala Thanks ive been trying to find any info and its scarce for some reason
I suggest you dont use 13 the tonal difference is very minimal
His guitar is a short scale (24" I believe) so it has less tension than other guitars with longer scale lengths.
How mad is Catalinbread that he's saying their name wrong?
Eh, it's great info to know.
No soy troll pero a Omar le gusta tocar un chingo con pedalera multi efectos.
Wat is Bosnian Rainbows?
@unb77 Nah it aint about me. I just think its silly people like you come in to complain because others are doing better than you. That their choices upset you makes me happy. Thank you.
You mad, I'm not making comments for you bro?
Rainbow Machine. 🌈
thats a HUGE neck!!!
How so? Did you think The Mars Volta were gonna be like the rolling stones and be playing together at 70 years old. Omar and Cedric were together for 20 years. They moved on. You should too.
i just got a line 6 dl4 and i'm so excited about it, and he just ignore it .....xd
He only uses the looping function on the DL4. Probably why he didn't feel the need to talk about it. Or maybe he forgot :)
Jon Emerson it’s a nice pedal. Mine still works I’ve had it like 15 years. Hope you have been enjoying yours. This comment is 5 years old. Lol.
hahah omar is a crackup
For someone who's been known for using a lot of effects he doesn't really seem to know much about his pedals.
That's really harsh given how little unb77 said, jeez, haha.
Everyone wanna have a dl4 and just act like it’s not there :/
I never realised how small the neck is fuck
1:15 I think I just heard Omar make a joke.
The fact that he keeps mispronouncing Catalinbread is so funny
And my comment wasn't about me but you still trying to tell me I'm worse than anybody. Your words won't touch me. But you can call me silly, if you're happier then :-). You're welcome. But you're only making your own soul dirtier. Think about it. God bless you.
He needs to clean his shit lol
joker king
CataliN bread, not catalinA bread dick... :P
lol
Catalinabread lol
Todo Portlandia. lol 🌈
You mad he's not making music for you bro? All you folks complaining need to make your own music or just listen to old shit. Human being evolve. Not everyone is afraid of change. Remember that when you get nowhere in life.
ORL from BR. Pretty sad
I think it's stupid to question the motives of such a talented and accomplished artists like omar. i'll admit, i'm not a fan of gender-benders style of vocals, and i wish could jus have the instrumental version of the album--which would be sick--but i cant knock his decisions because he is obviously trying to appeal to something larger than myself
i find it to be a waste of good tunes because of her vocals.
i love omar's guitar work but i dont understand why he was just acting like he didnt want to be there, if you didnt want to do it then dont, but its only meant for your fans like me who actually want to see your gear, was a bit unprofessional in my opinion
that's pretty much how this dude acts all the time though
I dunno, he seemed pretty chill to me.
This is like the 3rd video I've seen about this particular pedalboard setup.

Well that was an annoying interview.......
Why? He’s hilarious

PLAY THE GUITAR FFS
That was terrible
