I had 2 dart frogs in my early 20’s which was about 6-7 years ago! I loved them very fun to build a live vivarium. I have always been a plant person so it came second nature to me, reason I don’t have them anymore my partner and I broke up many years ago and she decided to keep them. But I am very interested in having my own and can’t wait to start designing their environment. I like to get a vivarium started for about 1-3 months before putting live critters in them however that’s not necessary it’s more of a quality control for me! But to anyone looking to have a little slice of the rainforest in your home please do! It’s a massive conversation piece, I used to spend hours just looking at the plants and the frogs. So beautiful!
Love your absolutely awesome videos. I’ve recently jumped into the hobby and just can’t get enough of them. Thanks for sharing all your very helpful information and have a wonderful day. Keep up the great work!😊
Aaah, this is so helpfull! Thank you! I was in total doubt if i had everything set up correctly to keep humidity and temperatures at a constant level.. I have fans running on a humidity sensor to keep it constant.. Humidity rises very quickly and i was worrying about it a little --> Turns out i can leave everything off most part of the day. haha Thank you 😃
Excellent video. I've been thinking about trying my hand at keeping some dart frogs for some time, just wasn't sure how much time and energy I needed to put into it. I used to have a couple of green tree frogs, and it doesn't sound like it will be any more involved than they were. I've also got a reef aquarium, and it really won't be nearly as involved as that is now.
Nice Jay, didn't know you're a frog guy. I see that smile. I got some bull frogs, but the tank is set up much different. Basically pond muck and they stink.
im starting to build one in 3 days for dart frogs , thanks for making these vids as i just came across ur page today . I will be getting the Frog & co dart frog tank 18x18x24
I just got two blue dart frogs today. I love them! Now building the terrarium. I have fruit fly’s, isopods and springtails but still have to learn how to produce my own. Question: how many springtails and isopods needed for a 24x24x24 enclosure? And how often do you replenish?
Are usually supplement it couple times a month with the springtails just because the frogs will eat them as well. Are usually put a full culture of springtails if not 2 inside of a viviarium to start
I'm planning on creating a vivarium and keeping dart frogs in a few years. In the meantime, I'm going to make a bioactive enclosure for my ball python and enjoy learning everything I can about dart frogs :)
I have been battling with root rot in my plants because their soil won’t drain. What kind of substrate mix do you use to keep your plants as happy as they are?
I am setting up a dart frog and mourning gecko communal tank soon. I just got an 18x18x24 tank and already have bought a ton of plants. I am going to do a whole homemade naturalistic back ground and have the whole bioactive with the drainage layer and abg mix for substrate. My only thing that I'm not sure about, is what I should use for my drainage layer. I have gone back a forth about what I should use and decided that I think I am going to do lava rocks. What do you think about using them? Also what do you use for your drainage layer?
I had dart frogs for awhile and they're relatively easy keepers....but the thing that caused me to move on was the constant keeping and culturing the fruit flies. The fruit flies aren't even hard to culture....I just got tired of doing it...lol. I had the green and black, Oelemari and the Citronella. They're definitely a cool critter to keep....as long as you keep the fly cultures going. BTW....I found new homes for my frogs.
I find it really simple to culture. I’ve got about 7 cultures running at once and when the first one gets old, I hose it out and drop a couple of flies into it from other cultures. I literally do 5 minutes of maintenance a month and have constant thriving cultures
@@brockmosher8863 it is very simple to culture them....I just got tired of having fly cultures all over and finding little flies hopping around my kitchen....lol
Just got my first two frogs last weekend, and two geckos! 18x18x24 via Josh's Frogs recommendations, and I'm super happy with it! Now, just brushing up on care and maintenance - I appreciate the tips! Question - can I OVERFEED them? It looked like a lot of flies in your video, but maybe I'm not using enough?
I have two whites tree frogs and they are on eco earth coco fiber mixed with real soil and live springtails. I pick up any visible poop at least every other day and check for any uneaten food. However in the last few days it has started to smell..not just an earthy smell but stinky like poop smell. I just took everything out (fake plants and hides) and cleaned it and turned the soil about a week ago. I stopped misting for a few days thinking that maybe the humidity was too high but my gauge says 50% most of the time. Any tips? Should I throw out my substrate and get more even though I have springtails in it? Are my springtails still living? Do springtails make a gross smell? I don’t have a drainage layer (hydro balls or stones) beneath my substrate could this be the issue?
@@Leahweahbeah ooooh ok I thought you said you didn’t have a drainage layer LOL. And it still had a bad smell? Are you draining water from the drainage layer every so often?
@@Leahweahbeah maybe it’s the dirt itself, you could try switching to an ABG mix. That’s the best substrate in my opinion when it comes to bio active and what most people use. You could look into it and see if it’s something you want to use
I want to have like 4 dart frogs and a mourning gecko I have a few questions/concerns maybe you can clear up for me first what do I do about breeding as I don't want them to breed, do I just get males? Also I heard that a mourning gecko can lay eggs without a partner so how do I go about not having babies? Also can I have different color darts that are the same species? Like I noticed that theres the Dendrobates Tinctorius in different colors are those ok together?
All 4 darts the same. If you get them small typically you won’t sex them. Do not provide water standing and no tadpoles would happen. Mourning geckos are cool but the babies are unlikely.
I'm wanting to get dart frogs. Do I need to change the sheet moss at all? Can I buy any type of plants? Also I noticed you have funkos. I'm a collector as well. I have a luke with yoda in a back pack on dagoba. Have you ever incorporated a funko in a enclosure? Would it be ok to?
My girlfriend and I are thinking of making a vivarium for dart frogs. I want dart frogs because I feel they are very misunderstood. They're also cute and very pretty.
Nice video Jay, thanks for all the info! I'm going to do some more research and might decide on setting up a vivarium. Just a question: is it also possible to feed the frogs dried/non-living food? Convincing my girlfriend to have a huge vivarium in the living room is one thing, convincing her that I also need to grow some gross-looking insects is another. Thanks!
Dendrobates Tinctorius are mostly terrestrial, however, they will occasionally climb. It really depends on the individual. An 18x18x12 will be just fine.
I have just started my research into getting dart frogs and you had mentioned you cant mix color frogs. Is there a reason why you cant? I was really hoping for a mixed vivarium since I can only get one enclosure.
Do not keep your dart frogs at 100% humidity, 85% is a really nice sweet spot for your frogs and the plants inside the vivarium. As long as it doesn't drop below 80% you're good.
I shoot for 100% most of the time never really staying there it fluctuates from 85% - 95% most of the time. Seems to do real well for the frogs I keep.
Im sorry did you honestly say you can keep 4 frogs in an 18x18x18..... maybe with luecs but should not do so with Tinc species. Females can show aggression to each other best to keep in 1.1 pairs or a 2.1 trio
Not quite accurate. Keeping at 100% humidity is not ideal. Usually that means the air is stagnant. You want some airflow or else you are inviting bacterial infections. 80% is more ideal.
Love you videos Jay!! Yes, I am making a Bioactive vivarium in the next few weeks! It will be for my mourning geckos and I want a trio of dart frogs

How many frogs could be in like a 40gal long ?Ik it depends on species but for like general ones that can be in groups
5-6
