There's something genuinely horrifying in realizing that she's in the basement of the same cathedral you fought Amelia in, and that the Celestial Garden is right upstairs on the second floor. The people would most likely coming to this church on a daily or weekly basis and here you were, fighting some werewolf when those horrors from an outer world were right there all around and none was the wiser. As simple as that design choice is, I think it's one of those aspects that best embody the ''ignorance is bliss'' aspect of cosmic horror, that all these terrible truths can be right next door and you could live your whole life without knowing anything about it.
Also the name ‘The Choir’ for the highest rank of the healing church is so freaking good. In real cathedral’s/churches the choir is usually just barely hidden from sight. But their voice has a huge impact on the orchestra. Just like the balcony we walk on top of which overviews the arena in which we fight Amelia. It’s like that’s where the choir would be, watching everyone and pulling the strings from the balcony above. None of us being all the wiser. Probably my favorite bit of symbolism in the entire game.

Then humans all abuse it, turns into beasts and eldritch abominations, and she is left alone yet again, until some hunter comes in and starts to attack her for no reason. 0:34 to 1:01 is by far the best part of this song. It would have been so cool if as the fight progressed, the walls would just melt away until you're fighting Ebrietas on a floating platform in the middle of the cosmos with the stars dancing around you.
The Crimson King I find it pretty easy. Don't lock on, and just sprint straight right when you see her start the charge and then jump when she's close.

The item description for his clothes says that the title "Father" is not apart of the Healing Church, but from some foreign place where that title is used...Boletaria. Unfortunately that line of dialogue was cut out, probably because people glitched their way to find it. But still, that in itself is a pretty obvious hint.
Nero Noctis I'd say too they are rather easter eggs/references. I mean, in Demon's Souls, they were clearly demons, coming from the Old One, who slumbered outside of matter and time, below the nexus. Great Ones are... apparently, extraterrestial god-like creatures... who also happen to hail from outside of matter and time. There is also a Dark Souls reference too. You know these witch hat wearing pyromancers in chalice dungeons? Their equipment description mentions some "forgotten sin" or along those lines. Pyromancy? Forgotten sin? Ringin' any bells?
I was so happy when I finally beat her. I was a lot less happy when I realized that she had used that laser move right before I killed her. The "You died" sign ended up being my trophy screenshot.

when miyazaki was creating this title, it's said he literally read descriptions of certain things from HP. Lovecraft's books and had the artists try to render it to the best of their ability. so this guy was literally channeling lovecraft when he made this game. if i had a ps4, i would play the shit outta this game, but for now the only thing I can do is watch from a distance and clap in appreciation, this game looks like a genuine masterpiece, both in its art direction and themes.

Just notice it, out of all the Great Ones in the game, she's the only one with a translucent body. Unless you count the Celestial Emissary, but then again *Celestial* Emissary pretty much says it all.
They’re not actually stars, she’s lined with eyeballs against a fleshy background on her inside, but it gives the illusion that she’s filled with the cosmos itself
This is my favorite track in the game, hands down. It retains the heavy religious Gothic influence, but infuses it with a full sense of celestial wonder. It's almost as though you've pulled the curtain away and now see the full picture of madness.

This theme is pure bliss, as is this boss fight. I _can't_ do this boss while listening to my own playlists-- I must turn my playlist off and re-enable the game music, it would be disrespectful otherwise. Ebrietas is my favorite "character" in Bloodborne. She's so exclusive and hidden away, and _so challenging_ a fight, even if I can beat nearly all the other bosses without batting an eye, Ebrietas _always_ pushes me to my limit. It's a magical moment every single time I get a character to her, see her back turned to me in the huge secret altar room, waiting there. She always gets a Pebble toss, then a Hunter's Salutation, then a true battle with every fiber of my attention and reflexes devoted. It is our special little ritual together. I've still never aced her on the first try before.
A pebble toss?? That's a great idea. I didn't think it'd be enough to aggro her. I kinda feel kinda bad crudely hitting her unprovoked, so I've been postponing the fight in my current playthrough. I'll definitely try it in my next session!

@Alâ Ebrietas is my top one, followed by Cleric Beast, Gascoigne, Lady Maria and Laurence in no particular order. I like Ludwig, especially when the brass kicks in in the second phase, it's very bombastic and quite fantastic. I just like all those others more. None of it is bad though, that's for sure!

This game still continues to linger in my thoughts, even five years after platinuming it. I'll never forget being 15, eager to play this game everyday while uncovering its dark secrets. Ebrietas will always be my favourite boss from this game. She is so challenging, so hidden and so tragic. This music really makes you feel like you're fighting a cosmic and godly creature from another dimension, beyond the human mind's perception.
Amygdala seems at least visually a little more closer to "traditional" portrayals of Cthulhu but with more slender spiderlike qualities than this big hulking thing(so...more Xinlurgash?), but Ebrietas looks like some horrendous thing from the ocean and the implied lore around it seems to suggest it more, but then it's hard for me to imagine something being Cthulhu's equivalent that's not insanely huge. There's probably no one "equivalent" of the Eldritch horrors from Lovecraft, just the general concepts borrowed by FROM to make their own heavilly Lovecraft influenced lore, although imo Ebrietas is probably the closest to being Cthulhu's equivalent more in concept. Though there's always the possibility they could release DLC with a *massive* boss thats much more its equivalent in future.
Kiyosuki well I think Ebrietas looks quite like Azathoth, because she is this "mash", basically. I don't think anyone in Bloodborne looks like Cthulhu. Just because they are humanoid and Cthulhu is humanoid... Well. And I do believe DLC will come. There is a door in Cathedral Ward that is unopenable even in NG+, it just says "closed".
This fight was hard. Y'know what was harder? The Brainsuckers you had to fight to get here. There are 6 in the orphanage building. Fuck. That. I went into there with 43 insight, came out with 28. Thanks FromSoft. :)

The first part of the song is looped in the first half of the fight. Gets intense towards the end of the track when Ebrietas's health is low and attacks come rapidly.

If Lovecraft were alive today and were to view Bloodborne as an interpretation of cosmic horror, I think he would like it to an extent. Literature is not the best form of media to get across the ideas he had, and I think he would appreciate the design of these monstrosities. I’m sure he also would admire the frenzy mechanic. The thing I’m sure he would dislike though is that the player can physically kill Great Ones. Sure, they’ll still be around in spirit, but they’ll be physically gone. Finally, his work finely detailed that the Great Ones (apart from Nyarlathotep) did not at all take interest in humans. This is completely opposed in Bloodborne. Apart from that, I’m sure he’d love it.
I think as a fellow writer he'll understand FromSoft portrayed his ideas under some artistic license. Lovecraft also put a twist to gods and ideas from other works and mythologies in his stories. He might like it even more for it. Bloodborne was much more thoughtful to his work than some other stories Cough* Nyaruko-Chan*Cough that he would easily scoff at. The only other stories I've seen that came close to Lovecrafts visions are Adventure Time (it's very wacky, but often dives deep into the cosmic horror like you wouldn't believe) and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. If he were alive I'm sure he would appreciate these two.

This music is so wondrous, really signifies the true awe of Ebrietas. A magnificent creature of the Cosmos. She is truly a sight to behold. Kitamura is truly one of my fav composers and I look forward to her work in Elden Ring if she is apart of it.

She appeared at Byrgenwerth and then communed with the healing church to give them power by letting them synthesize her blood in exchange for helping try to get back "home". SO, if it wasn't for her, the plague of beasts wouldn't have ever begun in the first place.

There’s something so deeply affecting about this song to me. The choir in phase 1 is in awe of Ebrietas, almost introducing the player to her magnificence. It mirrors what must’ve been the reaction of the Healing Church upon first discovering Ebrietas, an almost joyous celebratory theme, with small hints of her true cosmic origin. And then phase 2 begins…and the celebration abruptly switches to abject horror. You hear the void, the threads woven between space and time and all of reality as we known it come undone, and the truth is revealed. What once seemed like an opportunity for mankind to broaden our knowledge of realities deemed far beyond possible, turns into the greatest nightmare to threaten our very humanity itself, and even the knowledge of its existence is terrifying. You hear the vastness of the cosmos, the eldritch wisdom of beings far beyond our comprehension, and you hear the end.

Amazing soundtrack for this mysterious being. This was by far the hardest boss in the game for me, thank god the lamp is just a short walk away from the boss area. I got tired of that little blue guy falling to his death while I went down that elevator xD.
For being the boss in the game that happens to be a direct reference to Chtulhu, she sure not only has a challenging boss fight, but also an impressive theme song. If I were H.P Lovecraft, I would be very proud upon seeing this.

I haven’t played bloodborne (although I’d like to) and know next to nothing about the lore, but this theme, I understand that it is a boss theme, yet it does not sound like a battle. It sounds like a massacre. A disaster, a tragedy, not a battle.
Agreed. Listening to that really made it feel like you were fighting somekind of godlike being. Not to say the rest is bad, but it just doesn't give the same vibe.
I love how this theme really sounds like the whole universe is opening up right above you with gazillion of stars and galaxies right at your grasp. The melody is hopeful and curious in a way, especially in the beginning, and I guess the longer you peer into the abyss the more deranged and intense the music becomes.

It's as though you're witnessing the true majesty of this daughter of the cosmos, as she gives it her all to end your life.
This theme is pure bliss, as is this boss fight. I _can't_ do this boss while listening to my own playlists-- I must turn my playlist off and re-enable the game music, it would be disrespectful otherwise.
Ebrietas is my favorite "character" in Bloodborne. She's so exclusive and hidden away, and _so challenging_ a fight, even if I can beat nearly all the other bosses without batting an eye, Ebrietas _always_ pushes me to my limit. It's a magical moment every single time I get a character to her, see her back turned to me in the huge secret altar room, waiting there. She always gets a Pebble toss, then a Hunter's Salutation, then a true battle with every fiber of my attention and reflexes devoted. It is our special little ritual together.
I've still never aced her on the first try before.

@Alâ Ebrietas is my top one, followed by Cleric Beast, Gascoigne, Lady Maria and Laurence in no particular order. I like Ludwig, especially when the brass kicks in in the second phase, it's very bombastic and quite fantastic. I just like all those others more. None of it is bad though, that's for sure!
@Alâ But more than half of the Dark Souls 3 (and DLC) OST I rate even higher than Bloodborne's, except maybe for Ebrietas... whatever gripes you can have with DS3 you cannot knock the soundtrack. It's the peak of video game music for me

6 years later and this track, especially the last minute, is one of the most underrated tracks in video games soundtrack history in my opinion.

This game still continues to linger in my thoughts, even five years after platinuming it. I'll never forget being 15, eager to play this game everyday while uncovering its dark secrets. Ebrietas will always be my favourite boss from this game. She is so challenging, so hidden and so tragic. This music really makes you feel like you're fighting a cosmic and godly creature from another dimension, beyond the human mind's perception.
I feel the same way. Would find it even more blatant if you had implemented someone's idea in the comments regarding the arena / cave.

Amygdala seems at least visually a little more closer to "traditional" portrayals of Cthulhu but with more slender spiderlike qualities than this big hulking thing(so...more Xinlurgash?), but Ebrietas looks like some horrendous thing from the ocean and the implied lore around it seems to suggest it more, but then it's hard for me to imagine something being Cthulhu's equivalent that's not insanely huge.
There's probably no one "equivalent" of the Eldritch horrors from Lovecraft, just the general concepts borrowed by FROM to make their own heavilly Lovecraft influenced lore, although imo Ebrietas is probably the closest to being Cthulhu's equivalent more in concept.
Though there's always the possibility they could release DLC with a *massive* boss thats much more its equivalent in future.

The first part of the song is looped in the first half of the fight. Gets intense towards the end of the track when Ebrietas's health is low and attacks come rapidly.

If Lovecraft were alive today and were to view Bloodborne as an interpretation of cosmic horror, I think he would like it to an extent.
Literature is not the best form of media to get across the ideas he had, and I think he would appreciate the design of these monstrosities. I’m sure he also would admire the frenzy mechanic.
The thing I’m sure he would dislike though is that the player can physically kill Great Ones. Sure, they’ll still be around in spirit, but they’ll be physically gone.
Finally, his work finely detailed that the Great Ones (apart from Nyarlathotep) did not at all take interest in humans. This is completely opposed in Bloodborne.
Apart from that, I’m sure he’d love it.
I think as a fellow writer he'll understand FromSoft portrayed his ideas under some artistic license. Lovecraft also put a twist to gods and ideas from other works and mythologies in his stories. He might like it even more for it.
Bloodborne was much more thoughtful to his work than some other stories Cough* Nyaruko-Chan*Cough that he would easily scoff at. The only other stories I've seen that came close to Lovecrafts visions are Adventure Time (it's very wacky, but often dives deep into the cosmic horror like you wouldn't believe) and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. If he were alive I'm sure he would appreciate these two.

This music is so wondrous, really signifies the true awe of Ebrietas. A magnificent creature of the Cosmos. She is truly a sight to behold. Kitamura is truly one of my fav composers and I look forward to her work in Elden Ring if she is apart of it.

She appeared at Byrgenwerth and then communed with the healing church to give them power by letting them synthesize her blood in exchange for helping try to get back "home". SO, if it wasn't for her, the plague of beasts wouldn't have ever begun in the first place.

There’s something so deeply affecting about this song to me. The choir in phase 1 is in awe of Ebrietas, almost introducing the player to her magnificence. It mirrors what must’ve been the reaction of the Healing Church upon first discovering Ebrietas, an almost joyous celebratory theme, with small hints of her true cosmic origin.
And then phase 2 begins…and the celebration abruptly switches to abject horror. You hear the void, the threads woven between space and time and all of reality as we known it come undone, and the truth is revealed. What once seemed like an opportunity for mankind to broaden our knowledge of realities deemed far beyond possible, turns into the greatest nightmare to threaten our very humanity itself, and even the knowledge of its existence is terrifying. You hear the vastness of the cosmos, the eldritch wisdom of beings far beyond our comprehension, and you hear the end.

I love the OST in this game. This is seriously the type of style I was looking for in the Souls series. It feels right in place! It has that very Gothy, Cathedraly, Orchestral sound to it that I was hoping it would. I'm in love with this game!

Amazing soundtrack for this mysterious being. This was by far the hardest boss in the game for me, thank god the lamp is just a short walk away from the boss area. I got tired of that little blue guy falling to his death while I went down that elevator xD.

I haven’t played bloodborne (although I’d like to) and know next to nothing about the lore, but this theme, I understand that it is a boss theme, yet it does not sound like a battle. It sounds like a massacre. A disaster, a tragedy, not a battle.
I love how this track carries a Spielbergian uplifting tone of the cosmos, but the boss is basically a giant space abortion.

I love how this theme really sounds like the whole universe is opening up right above you with gazillion of stars and galaxies right at your grasp. The melody is hopeful and curious in a way, especially in the beginning, and I guess the longer you peer into the abyss the more deranged and intense the music becomes.
As a music nerd, I cannot get over the breathtakingly atonal nature of this piece. It is just jaw-dropping how risky it is, and how powerful it is.
