The first mandatory boss of the DLC mirrors the first mandatory boss of the base game. While Gascoigne goes from man to beast, Ludwig goes from beast to man.
I'd say that even with the sword, he's still a beast, unless he's willfully trying to keep out the hunter. After his head comes off, he seems glad that you beat him and he isn't mad at the hunter. Absolutely. My two favourite games have my two favourite soundtracks, Hollow Knight (like a calm eargasm or mildly intense one) and Bloodborne (a fear-drived intense BDSM on crack and steroids eargasm).
Ludwig's design is so incredible. He looks like this absolutely horrid monster that looks like a horse and a man in halfway finished with being painfully fused together, which makes him bewildering in the first half and sickening overall. But when the second half of the fight starts and he regains even some of his sense and takes up the Moonlight Greatsword, the way he stands upright makes him look vaguely like a gallant swordsman riding a horse. Still putrid looking, and nothing's changed but the posture and him talking; but that small change allows you to see even just a small glimpse of how majestic he must have been in life as a human.
And one of the best boss fights(My top 1 personally tho) in the entire Soulsborne series. Honestly, majority of the bosses in the vanilla Bloodborne were flat out boring as bosses but amazing design and OST but the DLC made me jizz in my pants.
3:42 THIS is how real horror feels like. Just a music that tells You something TERRIBLE is coming after You right now. This has to be the best song FromSoftware has ever created.

Ive been with Xbox for close to 15 years, mainly because that's where all my close friends are but a few weeks back I bought a PS5 aswell, because I wanted to play a few games on it, including ofc Bloodborne since Souls games is one of my favorite game series. I went into this game legit not knowing anything, I genuinely knew nothing about the game. Finished it just 2 days ago and what a masterpiece it is. Now earlier tonight I started the DLC and its safe to say the goosebumps I got from the 4:49 bit made me lose focus and die, fine by me though since that's just another go at fighting this amazing boss and hearing the beautiful soundtrack. No idea if anyone is gonna see this or even read it for that matter, but lets all continue supporting FromSoft and their incredible talent at making games.
During my encounter with Ludwig his sword attacks synced with choir singing and so I was in tune with everything going on I felt as if I was dancing with him, not just fighting. Needless to say that’s my favorite boss encounter in all soulsborne games so far
It's kind of like Midir's rampage or Placidusax's fire breath in that they're designed to sync perfectly with the score for a killer cinematic moment. Very memorable and it adds a lot to the fights imo.
Quite literally the only context I have of Bloodborne, is this song, and someone pointed out to me that if you switch around the last 3 letters you get Bloodboner.
@@josephbrown6623 well he's kinda not and kinda is When you first fight him it's "ludwig the accursed" , then when he gets his blade he becomes "Ludwig the Holy blade"
You've heard stories of Ludwig, The Hunter of the Church. He was a hero, a legend echoed across the tales of every generation of Hunters. When you meet what remains of him, he is nothing but a beast, a monster like any other to be put down. The monster is savage, ruthless, brutal, and merciless. It gnashes and claws towards you, its bloodlust driving itself to kill you. Finally, the monster falls. It lies still in the pool of blood in its chamber. A faint, green glow in the shape of a sword then emanates beside the fallen beast in the darkness. It looks upon the blade. And then it speaks. "Ah, you were at my side, all along." It picks up the sword, observing its cosmic splendor. "My true mentor...my guiding moonlight..." And it stands upright, looking down at you. You are not facing a beast anymore. You now face Ludwig.
But anyway, what you said is true. When I was fighting Ludwig the Acursed, his attacks were completely random and he doesn't make sense, but when he got to the second phase, dear Lord, he was dancing withe the Moonlight Greatsword, and his patterns of attacks completely changed and the feeling that I get was that I was dancing with him in a prom night, a prom where one of the two was not getting out alive (sorry if I wrote something wrong, I don't speak english very well).
IgnusIncubus No, that was good English. And yeah, I felt the same way. It felt so sad, terrifying, and uplifting at the same time, seeing Ludwig retain his humanity for a few minutes to fight you. It's like I fought Ludwig and not a beast at that point.
Watch an analysis of this, this song has a lot of depth. Near the end, it goes higher to be more heroic, but also switches to strings. It has falling and rising tones with cymbal crashes, suggesting madness even though ludwig had this big revelation that he was still a hunter. apparently, the beats resemble a waltz, meaning that this song is not only about ludwig standing up into humanity, but also about his dance with madness.
+Vincent Lee Has nothing to do with fanboyism. This track is objectively amazing, and if you think otherwise, well, even if it's your opinion, it's an awful one at that. That's why I tell you to get out.
How the hell did this game not win any awards for the soundtrack? Let alone get mention? I've been gaming for 30 years and this is the best boss theme I ever heard
That feel when you tried so hard to kill a cockroach in your house, and then you finally managed to hit it with the cockroach spray. You thought it died, but then it raises up with its wings.
*Virgin Father Gascoigne:* -goes to beast from man -uses a lame weapon you get at the start -is a sociopath -killed his wife _VS_ *Chad Ludwig:* -regains his sanity to fight you -has his guiding moonlight -killed everyone inside the area you fight him -is insane at first, but clings to his humanity like a legend
It is quite likely Gascoine went full beast BECAUSE his wife was killed, since we find her on a roof seeminlgy dead from falling. It's possible some beasts cornered her and Gascoine seeing her die was what pushed him to fully be consumed.
i didn't realise the parallel actually that Gascoigne goes more insane during the fight while Ludwig regains his sanity, and they are the first bosses of the main game/DLC respectively
Ludwig is the pinnacle of Souls games. A man who has been to his lowest point and literally has no hope of returneing to his most glorious days. A man that is no longer a man. But when he must fight for his life, he remembers what he can do, who he really is. And then he lifts his sword...
@@Kdarco. slave knight gael is more about Dark Souls only. A man on a mission yo change the world. He is more like the chosen undead, rather than the world of the game.
Ludwig may be many things but the top spot would always belong to Gael. He is such a huge character in from soft games. He travelled to the end of the world and time itself to accomplish what he was doing. Ludwig fell early. He is more like Artorias from DS1.
@@Kdarco. gael is not a fallen man given a last chance of redemption. He is more like the player. The world however is in ruins. It is past its former glory and now awaits for its end. My dear friend, As I write this letter, I am struggling to hold onto my humanity. The blood of the beasts courses through my veins and I can feel the transformation taking hold of me. I fear that soon I will lose myself completely to the darkness. But even as I succumb to this curse, I wanted to write to you one last time, to express my deepest apologies for the pain and suffering I have caused. I never meant for things to end this way, but I fear that it is too late to turn back now. I remember when I first picked up the Holy Blade, filled with the conviction that it was my destiny to rid the world of the plague of beasts. But as I swung the blade, cutting down one beast after another, I began to realize that the line between man and monster was not as clear as I had thought. And in the end, it was I who became the very thing I had sworn to destroy. I am so sorry for the harm I have caused, and for the shame that I have brought upon our order. But even now, as the beast within me grows stronger, I hold onto the hope that somehow, someway, my actions can be redeemed. So I beg of you, do not give up on me just yet. I know that I am beyond saving, but if there is even the slightest chance that I can be of use in the fight against the darkness that plagues this world, then I beg you to let me serve. Farewell, my friend. May the Good Blood guide you always. Your friend, Ludwig, the Holy Blade

part of what made his transition from beast to man so memorable was probably how well he was animated. his eye turned from emotionless and unaware to suddenly being filled with wonder and sentience. and when he held the sword up to his face, his eye showed conviction.
That's as right as it gets. The first phase of the song has you yearn for more and then, especially when the chorus kicks in in the second phase, it blows your mind and ears away! Kinda like Ludwig himself: the first phase feels like suppressed potential, just another crazy beast dude, but when he goes second phase and you read the changed name at the bottom, you just want to say "More like the *holy shit*!" That's what makes Ludwig so incredible. Alone, each of these bosses would still be fairly highly rated bosses. @@Popirnot Yeah, I don't mind at all. Honestly, I found most DS3 bosses to be disappointingly easy anyway. I want more of the soul crushing difficulty that Malenia had than the toned down relatively simple stuff from the earlier Souls entries. It's so good.)
I find his sword form way harder because he's much more aggressive. I've basically learned the fight to perfection because it's my favourite fight ever but even than, the second phase still screws me up sometimes even to this day. It's much harder to fully learn the second phase.
@@adamkhan6898 No. His first form is way more aggressive and unpredictable. His attacks are very telegraphed in his second phase and gives you lots of time to think.
I honestly don't think Ludwig the Accursed's theme gets enough love. The dissonance and chaos of the theme shows how far into beasthood he's gone, and it makes his second phase all the more impactful. It shows the bond Ludwig has with the Blade, and how even with how far gone he is, it still has the strength to lift him from the darkness. edit: I am talking about the first phase boss theme, gawd damn.
????? ????? If you find the patterns and dodge alot, you're pretty good, but both jump attacks are utter horseshit though, they feel like chance survivals
Ludwig is probably the most well designed boss fight I've ever seen in a video game. Not a big gamer anymore, but Bloodborne has me blood drunk still and Ludwig is the pinnacle of it. He has the lore that you keep seeing and read about over and over again wondering if you'll actually see him until you do for the first time. He has in my opinion the most unique visual design of any boss in the game. He has this music that fits more perfectly into the fight than with any other boss in any game that I can think of. He's difficult without being overly difficult and is so fun and intense. Best boss Fromsoft has put out to this day.
@@rasedmohammad4632 I sadly don't. Like I said, I'm just not really a big enough gamer anymore to justify the $60. A friend of mine brought it over a couple of weeks ago and I played a little bit. I thought it would've been interesting to meet him and greet him, In his human form I was guessing... And here they did it, Made him a giant beast and even gave him my favourite boss theme and cutscene in all of Gaming, Thank you Fromsoft!
Since the game tells us that Ludwig found the sword. And other games have stated, the sword is sentient. Leads me too believe the sword is itself a great old one, that chose Ludwig too be its weilder. Giving an honorable death too its champion. Once Ludwig is defeated we can pick up the weapon. Implying we are the swords new champion
The whole Bloodborne Score beats every Hollywood Score that came out the last 10 years. This track alone might be the greatest Horror Music I have ever heard.
The way the music is layered is perfection. Starts off with slow, dark twisted atmosphere representative of the beast youre fighting. Then, second phase. The choir quietly kicks in. Ludwigs tired head lifts, as though hearing the choir within the HMB. And he picks it up, the music becomes a reminder that youre fighting one of the great old hunters. And one of the true masters of the holy moonlight greatsword.
William See he's the only true master of the holy moonlight blade he was the only one to use it to it's fullest potential we as players simply imitate his power seriously could you imagine having to dodge his slam attack in PvP uhh how bout no if someone catches you in a hall your boned
I feel like it also is somewhat like, originally you're just fighting a beast, like always, so it's more linear and calm because you kill beasts all the time, and then the second phase starts and it's like, this is another hunter, he hunts beasts, hes a challenge, not that beast you fought. Edit: and so, the music is wilder, more exciting because you're fighting someone of similar nature to yourself
According to the Soulsborne lore, there are only two masters of the Moonlight sword. One of them, Bito the Moonlight Knight, died with his blood sucked by giant leeches in his search for Saint Astraea, and his sword can be found hanging from the rocks in the poisonous swamp in the Valley of Defilement. While the other kept it even as he became a beast, and used it again when he recovered his humanity, using it's full potential and showing us it's true power, as one of the great old hunters, and as the true master of the Moonlight sword: Ludwig, the Holy Blade.
Tbh, one of the reason why i love this OST so much, along with Gherman, the First Hunter is that, usually whenever i'm fighting a boss. At times i can't feel the soundtrack due to the adrenaline and intensity of the occuring boss fight. But this? I just felt hype and intensity man. Such an unforgettable moment.
ABSOLUTELY!!! I have to say that in caps because I agree 100% 100%! especially this song. Phase 1 is really cool and kinda creepy, like a predator (which kinda fits how he behaves) but as soon as phase 2 transitions into a waltz he song accompanies the battle perfectly. Gehrman's theme is amazing and also fits the fight so well, due to the general tone of that fight too. It feels like a climax, but not the kind of climax you were expecting (like, against a great one or something). you feel melancholic and the song fits it so well.
After all these years today, i was finally able to fight him at last. After watching other Hunters fight him an listening to this masterpiece of a song so many times. It was glorious, it was bloody and i loved it just as much as i tought i would. My face during the battle and especially on the transition was of a boy that was wittnessing somthing amazing. Thank you FromSoftware, with all my heart.
Lets be real. This is easily one of the greatest composed tracks ever made, atleast in gaming. They must of blown the roof off in the studio with this.
It's amazing how much you don't notice the song, like at all; when you have a 32 foot horse monster trying to practice his new proctology license on you using nothing but his equally enormous blue glowing Popsicle made out of the frozen tears he's gathered from the player. Seriously, all those corpses in the room? Those were the culmination of me trying to kill him for 4 god damn hours.

Absolutely. My two favourite games have my two favourite soundtracks, Hollow Knight (like a calm eargasm or mildly intense one) and Bloodborne (a fear-drived intense BDSM on crack and steroids eargasm).

Souls game OST's in general allow me to ASCEND
Ludwig's design is so incredible.
He looks like this absolutely horrid monster that looks like a horse and a man in halfway finished with being painfully fused together, which makes him bewildering in the first half and sickening overall.
But when the second half of the fight starts and he regains even some of his sense and takes up the Moonlight Greatsword, the way he stands upright makes him look vaguely like a gallant swordsman riding a horse. Still putrid looking, and nothing's changed but the posture and him talking; but that small change allows you to see even just a small glimpse of how majestic he must have been in life as a human.
+Kiyosuki His face changes and the body also slightly.
+luckyman212 It doesn't. He's showing a different side of his face, that looks more human. Both forms use the same 3D model.
And one of the best boss fights(My top 1 personally tho) in the entire Soulsborne series.

"My true mentor...my guiding moonlight..."
And it stands upright, looking down at you. You are not facing a beast anymore. You now face Ludwig.
Good one, Vaativydia 2.0!
+IgnusIncubus You know, I never thought I would get a comment like that. Thank you! :D
+ZeroReaper42 You're welcome!
I see you saw Alex Moukala's Analisys for this piece... Good content creator
Well, it does appear to be in 3/4 but I wouldnt say a waltz per se

And you also engage him in his last dance

My dear friend,
As I write this letter, I am struggling to hold onto my humanity.
I know that I am beyond saving, but if there is even the slightest chance that I can be of use in the fight against the darkness that plagues this world, then I beg you to let me serve.

part of what made his transition from beast to man so memorable was probably how well he was animated. his eye turned from emotionless and unaware to suddenly being filled with wonder and sentience. and when he held the sword up to his face, his eye showed conviction.

@Cryonic I fully endorse that Hyper Light Drifter pick. That game has damn masterful music
Imma say it. If the first phase didn't exist, the second phase wouldn't be as impactful
Its the lore impact that was so striking. In first phase you face just another beast that you must hunt. In 2nd phase, you face Ludwig himself.
That's as right as it gets. The first phase of the song has you yearn for more and then, especially when the chorus kicks in in the second phase, it blows your mind and ears away! Kinda like Ludwig himself: the first phase feels like suppressed potential, just another crazy beast dude, but when he goes second phase and you read the changed name at the bottom, you just want to say "More like the *holy shit*!" Oh, this ost just matches the boss so well, in every fucking way possible. Gives me an orchestra-boner every time I think about it!
@@Raidon484 I read Ludwig's lore before facing him (cuz the Ludwig's great sword of the shop), when i heard the corpse saying "Ludwig, the accursed" i was like "Holy shit is fucking him", and when the 2nd phase came after that cinematic i was emotional, almost teared up
That's what makes Ludwig so incredible. Alone, each of these bosses would still be fairly highly rated bosses. But the fact that these two fights are one in the same, have a huge story reason, and have the best cutscene in the series to show the transformation, that's what makes Ludwig the best boss in the series and possibly all of gaming
@@NinjaPickle if you go to him after beating him with church attaire he will ask if the church was successful in saving people and if all his fighting for the church was worth it and you were given option to say "yes" and "no" little did he know who he was fighting for. Poor guy.
I can't wait for Shadow of The Erdtree just so we can get another absolute banger like this.

@@Popirnoteh it'll be fine. I want harder bosses and levels anyway.
@common_undead are you sure because midir was a lot harder than the nameless king, so the dlc will have a fight a lot more bullshit than milania
@@Popirnot Yeah, I don't mind at all. Honestly, I found most DS3 bosses to be disappointingly easy anyway. Like I died more to curse rotted greatwood because I didn't understand the gimmick initially than I died to Friede, Gael and Demon Princes combined. Gael went down in a single attempt and I had like 6 flasks still left. I want more of the soul crushing difficulty that Malenia had than the toned down relatively simple stuff from the earlier Souls entries.
(haven't played Bloodborne yet because I'm not on PS, so don't really know anything about the bosses, but I found this track playing in the background of a video and just had to find it lol. It's so good.)
_The moonlit part was actually way easier than the crazy horse clusterfuck_
*Change my damn mind*
Same
actually it is!
His sword form is very predictable.
100% agree
The beautiful cello is amazing in the first part of the fight.

The fact that every single console seller exclusive eventually getting a PC port and Bloodborne having to sit in the shadows is beyond inexcusable.
This is the wrong version. After 20 seconds, there's supposed to be a REALLY loud screeching noise, and then the music cuts out.
haha
Gregory of Astora I feel you Bro xDDD
chcoman123 LMAO TRUE THATS THE VERSION I KNOW fun fact if you do it on bl4 it cuts out in 3.5 seconds instead of 3.... if you're lucky
hes not a hard boss... if you can dodge
Best boss Fromsoft has put out to this day.
its 2022 and i still love this game and the rest of soulsborne series, so do you play elden ring bro?
@@rasedmohammad4632 I sadly don't. Like I said, I'm just not really a big enough gamer anymore to justify the $60. A friend of mine brought it over a couple of weeks ago and I played a little bit. Seems fun, but it would take something insane to knock bloodborne off its pedestal as far as from soft games go.
@@cashcash8365 i see its okay bro, i hope you would try when the elden rings got the discount, like i did at other souls game, even for bloodborne i bought a secondhand physical copy (i bet the last owner rage quiting or something, because it was very cheap tho around $15 😂)
Edit : yes it is one reason why im buying PS4 to play bloodborne, btw its good to see a bloodborne lover, have a good day bro 😁
One of the things that i like the most about this fight is that his name changes from "ludwig the accursed" To "ludwig, the holy blade"
@@cashcash8365hmu I will buy it for you, can’t let that hunter inside perish.
I was actually hoping Ludwig was in the dlc before it came out as I always got dialogue from mostly Gehrman talking about him.

Seriously. From has great OST’s
Blade Runner 2049 soundtrack is better imo

@@mum-your tf kinda movies you watching? Most have very middling soundtracks, with actual standouts being incredibly rare.
@@mum-your bro listen to more bloodborne ost if you think that
The way the music is layered is perfection.
This comment sums up the emotions perfectly.
William See he's the only true master of the holy moonlight blade he was the only one to use it to it's fullest potential we as players simply imitate his power seriously could you imagine having to dodge his slam attack in PvP uhh how bout no if someone catches you in a hall your boned
I cannot agree more 😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤
I feel like it also is somewhat like, originally you're just fighting a beast, like always, so it's more linear and calm because you kill beasts all the time, and then the second phase starts and it's like, this is another hunter, he hunts beasts, hes a challenge, not that beast you fought.
Quit anime pfp

After all these years today, i was finally able to fight him at last. After watching other Hunters fight him an listening to this masterpiece of a song so many times. It was glorious, it was bloody and i loved it just as much as i tought i would. My face during the battle and especially on the transition was of a boy that was wittnessing somthing amazing. Thank you FromSoftware, with all my heart.
Lets be real. This is easily one of the greatest composed tracks ever made, atleast in gaming. They must of blown the roof off in the studio with this.
Absolute masterpiece.
Nayden ha not even close
Shikazu Okari what would you suggest then? I haven't played Bloodborne but I agree this is one of the greatest pieces ever made.
There are too many good tracks in Fromsoft games like this one though
Even though I love this I think Gehrman's ost is slightly better.
I wish this beauty was available on spotify, but as long as I can hear ludwig regain his sanity through perfectly crafted music, I am satisfied.
