the worst part is that they usually do that to children's media. if a child comes across this type of shit and has other people telling them that it's ok, they'll gradually learn that the type of behavior displayed in proships is "normal" and "shouldn't be a problem", leading to them either becoming the next victim or the next abuser, or even both. fiction *does* affect reality; if you display something and treat it a certain way, there are people who are going to start thinking that way because of that. one good example that comes off the top of my head is representation of autism in media: most known autistic characters are portrayed a certain way and therefore most people now think that autistic people are either completely dependant or are Sheldons. the point is, proshipping is actively harmful and leads to more victims.
Children shouldn’t be in online spaces unsupervised to begin with. Fiction isn’t a babysitter, it’s the responsibility of the parents and guardians to educate their children on what is and isn’t appropriate nor acceptable. If a kid kills baby animals because they Minecraft never told them it was unacceptable, that’d be the responsibility of the parents, not the game.

Children being unwillingly exposed and influenced by the media is a concept rarely discussed in these circles. Rule 34 as a whole is an issue, even with adult-aged kids' cartoon characters, in that case, and many antishippers would disagree, some even supporting ABDL (which is also about pretend children). Ero ethics are complicated, and violent media and pornography are registered in separate neurological pathways, but primal desires are simple and all-encompassing. I feel like THAT is why everything is such a mess and nobody can agree on where to draw the line.

Releasing your trauma in fiction can be healthy IF DONE RIGHT. You will not heal from portraying what has hurt you in a positive, fetishy light. It will only hurt you more. Portraying your trauma as what it is, bad and horrible, can help you process whats happened to you. Writing a fic where someone is in love and happy with someone who is abusing them will not help you process your abuse. I understand people fresh out of trauma may not understand immediatly that its harmful, which is why its so important to educate people on what is healthy as a coping mechanism.
on the topic of coping mechanisms, just because something is a coping mechanism doesn't mean it's inherently healthy or that it won't have a negative impact on other people. for example - drinking can be used as a coping mechanism, but obviously alcohol is an addictive substance and overindulgence can lead to alcoholism, which can have adverse affects on a person's overall health and put strain on their relationships. when it comes to art as a coping mechanism, i don't think it's harmful on its own as long as the artists adds the appropriate warnings beforehand - in fact i think art is one of the healthier ways to vent one's feelings. my main issue with the proship community is the frequent romanticization of the subject matter of the art itself. of course it's common and for therapists to recommend expressing emotion through art, but if someone was making art of an adult grooming a child and then making that kind of dynamic out to be desirable, to me that would be a cause for concern and i don't think it should be shared online. the proship community's fixation on romanticizing grooming or other abusive actions as a coping mechanism is also alarming to me because they don't seem to want to look any deeper than that - they never ask themselves why they specifically need to romanticize abuse in order to feel better, they just do it, and as you explain in the video fiction does affect reality. it affects reality in different ways depending on the person, but desensitization is a real concern when someone is constantly reinforcing the idea that abuse is attractive to themselves (or others, if it's shared online) over and over.

As a rehabilitated proshipper(for reasons), plz do not send death threats (or any kinds of threats in genera) to them, no matter what they ship!! Ofc proshipping is VERY harmful and disgusting, but that doesn’t warrant things like “go kys” or “I’m going to kill you”! I’ve never posted my stuff online but definitely have gotten threats to people I’ve told and it did NOT help me quit, so plz politely ask them to DNI, in my case I give them helplines/help websites once I find out they’re a proshipper, and I don’t interact with them in general :)

But asides from this, there really isn’t a reason to romanticize it. ✔️It’s done tastefully. It’s not there for shock value. The author has put in research or is a victim themselves. My point is, you CAN write about dark topics as long as you do it respectfully. i havent watched the video yet but all i've seen is ragebait proshippers, only actual proshippers i've met are geniunely nice people, and are in horrible situations. they are just trying to project their trauma onto their comforts which is bad, but apparantly certain therapists suggest it more than actual physical harm etc. i've had a friend who did their research with proshippers and usually whenever they do get the help they need, they aren't killed with rocks by professional therapists or anything like that, its actually suggested by them due to it being fictional and not harming them. even tho fiction can have an effect on reality it is more safe for proshippers to proship in a PRIVATE and safe space, harrassing them or them harrassing others will not let them heal, everyone is for letting sa or grooming victims heal until they project it out into tabboo fiction, harrassment from any side will not make anything better, dni goes both ways. it’s better to leave them alone cuz either way if it is ragebait ur just giving them attention, instead of makimg a whole video abt it

imo you should be allowed to depict disturbing topics like this as long as you don’t romanticize them and make it very clear that it’s horrible, show how traumatic it is for the characters involved, etc. having characters you can relate to is super comforting and lets you know you’re not alone
Yeah I agree. It's not like you CAN'T depict bad topics, but they would have to be researched. Not glorified, romanticized, or justified. Many people are able to relate to these topics, and it's good to be able to raise awareness on how they affect people (or anything else depending on what it is.)

There used to be a "trend" in my fandom to write smut about an (sometimes) aged up 7 year old and his 20-something brother in law. At one point, a young teenager caught wind of this and started drawing sexually explicit photos of this child NOT EVEN AGED UP as a "coping mechanism." The comments were ALL "omg this is so hot, please make more!" Babes, that isn't a coping mechanism. You are literally just giving pedophiles their food. You are a child so traumatized and chronically online that you think it's okay to do that because you don't have any other choice. I can't even be mad at them, I'm just so, so sad.

Pro ship means exactly that, "for shipping" (hence the pro- prefix). It's anti harassment in terms of shipping. Supporting and not judging any and all ships no matter if you dislike them or not as long as they stay in the bounds of fiction.

FYI, if you’re on art twitter, Japanese artists and mangaka (regardless of whether or not they post shipping content controversial or otherwise) are blocking accounts with “proship/proshippers DNI” in their bio in masses. To avoid being harassed by antis/american feeings yakuza (as Japanese artists call them) and were informed about the true meaning of “proship” (support of shipping without harassment) So you might either want to remove it and/or put “darkship DNI” or “problematic DNI instead”. Then again, if you GENUINELY believed that proship=real life endorsement of abuse, then you wouldn't do that just to see some anime art.

It's so weird how people act like fiction doesn't affect reality. Fiction can, and does, affect it. It spreads characters, stories, legends, messages, dynamics, symbols, etc. that we are very likely able to see in real life, even if it's not exaggerated to the extent it does in fiction. This ties in to the coping mechanism argument too. You can't say "Oh, it's just fictional. It's not like it's real or anything." when you quite literally intend for it to affect something that is. Also, enjoying something doesn't automatically make it a healthy way to cope. It just means you enjoy it and that's it - you can't conflate it with a term just so you're able to justify your actions. And no therapist would recommend letting out intrusive thoughts because the whole point of an intrusive thought is that they force their way in there - they're the thoughts you DON'T want to have yet have anyways.

There is a difference as to why proshipping is bad, and also why gaming or any media representing dark topics isnt. Proshipping ROMANTICIZES incest, r*pe, pedophilia, along with zoophilia and such. It treats it as something good, NEVER something bad. Other media, typically represents this in the dark light its meant to be shown in. If the media doesn't bother to do so, it's considered bad media. It also matters because these people could be making creators of the source material uncomfortable aswell, and even if the creators somehow *weren't* uncomfortable, they'd still be giving the role of perpetrator to some characters who are constantly depicted in a good light, as well as making 'cute' edits of the actions they headcannon happened. Now, you may argue that violence is constantly depicted in video games in a good light, but that's because violence, in itself, is typically done because humans are predators in nature. We eat meat. We have fight or flight instincts. We fight each other. We want to punch each other. Violence in games can also be an outlet to let out anger issues, a healthy one too. Violence yes, can trigger someone, but that's why it's usually always behind games, movies or other media with ratings to tell you the game is violent. Violence is also an inherently negative thing. Never is it used in a positive way unless between consenting adults. Even jokes, typically make violence up to be a punishment or a bad thing for the person who went through it. Proshipping, on the other hand, has no excuse. It can't be a joke, because if it is it makes fun of a topic that is already treated completely unseriously by the media, it can't be depicted in a negative light because again, shipping is WANTING A ROMANTIC/SEXUAL/QUEERPLATONIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TWO OR MORE CHARACTERS. It is WANTING to see them together in a positive light. Proshipping also actively harms the people who practice it by breaking their head and telling them that what they went through or what others went through, is okay. It rarely comes with a warning that is beyond 2-6 seconds, it is always beyond a headcannon that projects trauma onto a character (which you can do, you can hc a character as a sa/r*pe/other survivor), and once again, I repeat, takes characters depicted in a positive light most of the time in their media and gives them horrible actions to do to the headcannoned victim, depicting a RAPIST, a GROOMER, in a positive light constantly, is not okay. Neither is the reverse, depicting a good character as a rapist, etc. A better coping mechanism, is like writing about the trauma the character you headcannoned went through. You typically shouldn't post it, but if you do I wouldn't judge as long as it's not romanticizing it. You can portray the horrifying reality of it, but you shouldn't call it cute, nice, good, etc.

I used to proship, a lot, I don't know why because besides my ex gf there is no trauma to be held (I used to proship before the event, which happened when I was 15). I just think I was hypersexual and slowly fell out of it due to the trauma, so I'm not proshippy anymore. I feel incredibly ashamed for it, for protecting my thoughts about it and how anyone should love anyone, but I suppose I didn't realize that kids really cannot consent to those things, since I was a myself a kid who thought I consented to a sexual relationship, while as a matter of a fact, I really had no idea what I was saying and feel disgusted with myself. Hopefully those kids grow out of this phase, too.

I am not a pro shipper myself but I did have a license therapist and told her about these people posting on social media since it was everywhere and they would say it’s a coping mechanism so I asked her if it is a good coping mechanism and I was shocked when she told me yes IF used the right way because when she has a victim of sa/🍇 they will give them toys to play with to show what happened to them and that’s what they are doing with these children tv shows basically telling their stories yes I do agree they should KEEP IT PRIVATE so we don’t have to get triggered by any of these videos

fiction *does* affect reality; if you display something and treat it a certain way, there are people who are going to start thinking that way because of that. one good example that comes off the top of my head is representation of autism in media: most known autistic characters are portrayed a certain way and therefore most people now think that autistic people are either completely dependant or are Sheldons.

Fiction isn’t a babysitter, it’s the responsibility of the parents and guardians to educate their children on what is and isn’t appropriate nor acceptable. Children being unwillingly exposed and influenced by the media is a concept rarely discussed in these circles. Rule 34 as a whole is an issue, even with adult-aged kids' cartoon characters, in that case, and many antishippers would disagree, some even supporting ABDL (which is also about pretend children). Ero ethics are complicated, and violent media and pornography are registered in separate neurological pathways, but primal desires are simple and all-encompassing. I feel like THAT is why everything is such a mess and nobody can agree on where to draw the line.

Releasing your trauma in fiction can be healthy IF DONE RIGHT. You will not heal from portraying what has hurt you in a positive, fetishy light. It will only hurt you more. Portraying your trauma as what it is, bad and horrible, can help you process whats happened to you.
Writing a fic where someone is in love and happy with someone who is abusing them will not help you process your abuse.
I understand people fresh out of trauma may not understand immediatly that its harmful, which is why its so important to educate people on what is healthy as a coping mechanism.

on the topic of coping mechanisms, just because something is a coping mechanism doesn't mean it's inherently healthy or that it won't have a negative impact on other people. for example - drinking can be used as a coping mechanism, but obviously alcohol is an addictive substance and overindulgence can lead to alcoholism, which can have adverse affects on a person's overall health and put strain on their relationships.
when it comes to art as a coping mechanism, i don't think it's harmful on its own as long as the artists adds the appropriate warnings beforehand - in fact i think art is one of the healthier ways to vent one's feelings. my main issue with the proship community is the frequent romanticization of the subject matter of the art itself. of course it's common and for therapists to recommend expressing emotion through art, but if someone was making art of an adult grooming a child and then making that kind of dynamic out to be desirable, to me that would be a cause for concern and i don't think it should be shared online. the proship community's fixation on romanticizing grooming or other abusive actions as a coping mechanism is also alarming to me because they don't seem to want to look any deeper than that - they never ask themselves why they specifically need to romanticize abuse in order to feel better, they just do it, and as you explain in the video fiction does affect reality. it affects reality in different ways depending on the person, but desensitization is a real concern when someone is constantly reinforcing the idea that abuse is attractive to themselves (or others, if it's shared online) over and over.

Me personally, I don’t consider it proship if:
✔️The narrative makes it clear it’s wrong
✔️The victim/victims are shown to be uncomfortable with the abuse. If they aren’t uncomfortable as a trauma response, that needs to be made clear as well.
✔️The abuse isn’t there for the purpose of fetish/kink/just romanticizing etc. If we are reading the perspective of a victim who’s used to abusive behavior, or reading through the eyes of an abuser who doesn’t believe they’re doing anything wrong, then the romanticizing could be used as an unreliable narrator theme. But asides from this, there really isn’t a reason to romanticize it.
✔️It’s done tastefully. It’s not there for shock value. The author has put in research or is a victim themselves.

Pro ship means exactly that, "for shipping" (hence the pro- prefix). It's anti harassment in terms of shipping. Supporting and not judging any and all ships no matter if you dislike them or not as long as they stay in the bounds of fiction.
Another thing I'd like to point out is how this is especially harmful when it's characters popular with children (ex: mlp) which leads to children being exposed to it and possibly thinking its okay/romanticizing it or maybe even interacting with other proshippers and p3dos in the comments.

FYI, if you’re on art twitter, Japanese artists and mangaka (regardless of whether or not they post shipping content controversial or otherwise) are blocking accounts with “proship/proshippers DNI” in their bio in masses.
To avoid being harassed by antis/american feeings yakuza (as Japanese artists call them) and were informed about the true meaning of “proship” (support of shipping without harassment)
So you might either want to remove it and/or put “darkship DNI” or “problematic DNI instead”. Then again, if you GENUINELY believed that proship=real life endorsement of abuse, then you wouldn't do that just to see some anime art.

This is the most relatable thing ever. Especially ships like Bakudeku from MHA actually affected the author since the shippers literally sent DEATH threats to the author for not making it canon.
It's so weird how people act like fiction doesn't affect reality. Fiction can, and does, affect it. It spreads characters, stories, legends, messages, dynamics, symbols, etc. that we are very likely able to see in real life, even if it's not exaggerated to the extent it does in fiction. This ties in to the coping mechanism argument too. You can't say "Oh, it's just fictional. It's not like it's real or anything." when you quite literally intend for it to affect something that is. Also, enjoying something doesn't automatically make it a healthy way to cope. It just means you enjoy it and that's it - you can't conflate it with a term just so you're able to justify your actions. And no therapist would recommend letting out intrusive thoughts because the whole point of an intrusive thought is that they force their way in there - they're the thoughts you DON'T want to have yet have anyways.

There is a difference as to why proshipping is bad, and also why gaming or any media representing dark topics isnt.
Proshipping ROMANTICIZES incest, r*pe, pedophilia, along with zoophilia and such. It treats it as something good, NEVER something bad.
Other media, typically represents this in the dark light its meant to be shown in. If the media doesn't bother to do so, it's considered bad media.
It also matters because these people could be making creators of the source material uncomfortable aswell, and even if the creators somehow *weren't* uncomfortable, they'd still be giving the role of perpetrator to some characters who are constantly depicted in a good light, as well as making 'cute' edits of the actions they headcannon happened.
Now, you may argue that violence is constantly depicted in video games in a good light, but that's because violence, in itself, is typically done because humans are predators in nature. We eat meat. We have fight or flight instincts. We fight each other. We want to punch each other. Violence in games can also be an outlet to let out anger issues, a healthy one too. Violence yes, can trigger someone, but that's why it's usually always behind games, movies or other media with ratings to tell you the game is violent. Violence is also an inherently negative thing. Never is it used in a positive way unless between consenting adults. Even jokes, typically make violence up to be a punishment or a bad thing for the person who went through it.
Proshipping, on the other hand, has no excuse. It can't be a joke, because if it is it makes fun of a topic that is already treated completely unseriously by the media, it can't be depicted in a negative light because again, shipping is WANTING A ROMANTIC/SEXUAL/QUEERPLATONIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TWO OR MORE CHARACTERS. It is WANTING to see them together in a positive light. Proshipping also actively harms the people who practice it by breaking their head and telling them that what they went through or what others went through, is okay. It rarely comes with a warning that is beyond 2-6 seconds, it is always beyond a headcannon that projects trauma onto a character (which you can do, you can hc a character as a sa/r*pe/other survivor), and once again, I repeat, takes characters depicted in a positive light most of the time in their media and gives them horrible actions to do to the headcannoned victim, depicting a RAPIST, a GROOMER, in a positive light constantly, is not okay. Neither is the reverse, depicting a good character as a rapist, etc.
A better coping mechanism, is like writing about the trauma the character you headcannoned went through. You typically shouldn't post it, but if you do I wouldn't judge as long as it's not romanticizing it. You can portray the horrifying reality of it, but you shouldn't call it cute, nice, good, etc.

I used to proship, a lot, I don't know why because besides my ex gf there is no trauma to be held (I used to proship before the event, which happened when I was 15). The saddest part is that many minors who are proshippers might actually be stuck in unhealthy online spaces or echo chambers, where they’re led to think this is normal. Some might even be genuinely being groomed into believing it’s a good thing. I really hope they grow out of it.
If proshippers refuse to see that what they’re doing is wrong and unhealthy, they should AT LEAST keep it private instead of normalizing it as something "cute" "quirky" or "harmless".

okay so - i DO MULTIship and often get mistaken as a proshipper, so what i would like to say, they are not even similiar. multishippers ship one person or character with multiple other characters! these can be problematic, but aslong as you arent shipping shit like pet x human or adult x minor, YOURE GOOD! and what a proshipper is you definetly know :)

Another thing is that proshippers claim to be anti-harassment and “Wanting to be left alone” by “antishippers” yet they will attack anyone who they think is an “Antishipper” I got harassed by proshippers on tumblr because I explained to someone what proshipping meant and said it was gross. I am not a pro shipper myself but I did have a license therapist and told her about these people posting on social media since it was everywhere and they would say it’s a coping mechanism so I asked her if it is a good coping mechanism and I was shocked when she told me yes IF used the right way because when she has a victim of sa/🍇 they will give them toys to play with to show what happened to them and that’s what they are doing with these children tv shows basically telling their stories yes I do agree they should KEEP IT PRIVATE so we don’t have to get triggered by any of these videos

As someone who was groomed by proshippers (and was manipulated into being one when I was younger), I just wish for them to get professional help… I get it can be a coping mechanism but it’s not a healthy one.. just like SH is a coping mechanism that isn’t healthy.
