Well done everyone -dancers and orchestra! Couldn't stop my feet tapping along with the rhythm. Excellent. 7 years ago, I don't know if anyone will see this comment, but hope my remarks will reach all concerned.

I have to add -- #1 tossed her head gear beautifully when it was plain it wasn't cooperating. Wonderful composure!

This was pretty darn cool, love the dresses, I have seen similar ones for such performers in photos of the time. The only things that would improve it would for the girls to have the Gibson girl hairstyles and big hats that were in the original photos. Love the dance moves too.

Very nice for both ears and eyes!
I particularly like the dancer who stages secondly. Love the way she dances and her facial expression. She is the best!

Cute way to present one of Joplin's most popular rags.

This one's a cakewalk. But yes; this is how it should be presented. It also stops performers playing the music far too fast and ruining it.
It's worth noting that Joplin composed and played music for brothels, and that a number of his most famous pieces were named for various women who worked in that profession. Sadly, he died, quite young, from syphilis, which was a result of his 'sampling the merchandise'. It would have been interesting to know how his music would have changed, if he had lived for another 30 years.

Historic photos show the cakewalk performed as a dignified high strut, a black gentleman in tails and a top hat and canr with his wife on his arm. It was probably performed much more slowly. It was part of a competition, like today's slams.

In the 1920s, the dancing usually looked to be faster than here. But this is from the 1910s I believe

OK, I'm a blabbermouth. Can't help it. Ever notice how much more fun it is to watch enthusiastic amateur dancers (occasionally out of step) than pros who are perfect? (perfectly boring!) And kudos to the wonderful bandsmen and women.

At the time of ragtime these women would have caused a scandal, because we can see their knees! Indecent!

  • @Doug19752533

i personally think the tempo is a little too fast. after all the score does say "Slow" and because cakewalks have complicated dance steps and the high kicks, its slower then the typical ragtime two step. i simply listen to this at .75 speed and its PERFECT!
other then that the orchestration is great, the girls are wonderful. i watch this and imagine im back in say 1900 - 1905ish at a club having a beer enjoying the atmosphere. Also remember that Arthur Marshall wrote most of this work. Joplin wrote the third section, edited the work, and arranged its publishing. if Arthur were sitting in the audience (even at the age of 135!!, he was born in 1881 and died in 1968) he would of been very proud of this performance.

Thanks for your kind reply. Yes a slower tempo would probably work, too. This tempo was requested by our dancers and we aim to make the ladies happy. I actually prefer the more forward "walking" feel of the 100 beats per minute, which is what "slow" march tempo was considered during the era. I think things got considerably slower than originally intended during some of the revivals. Joplin's "not to fast" instructions are over interpreted to some degree, in my opinion. Glad you enjoyed the performance! Cheers!
