Fun fact; on the thing about the Doctor knowing Chairman Mao, if you take the Unbound audio drama "Sympathy for the Devil" as kind of canon he gets chastised about that by the Master and he responds that he knew Mao before when he was a librarian. Makes it slightly less problematic anyway.

People always think of Jo as an airhead. She studied codebreaking, and after having been hypnotized by the Master once, she took precautions to make sure that she could never be caught the same way again.

and getting out of knots and other fun espionage strategies. She was supposed to be about 20 and thrust into a crazy world that would confound most people, where she was resilient and empathetic. Jo was definitely not an airhead.

It was a shame this season of Dr Who no longer featured Liz Shaw, but there we are and also to have the TARDIS go off planet again a least once.

At least the 90s Doom novels turned the alien influence trope around so that the aliens visited earth in the 15th century and the aliens then designed their troops after our then current fears and nightmares. Man those were great weird little books.

Despite her air-headed nature, and generic-ness, Jo is actually my third favorite companion. I read somewhere the Jon Pertwee and Katy Manning had a phenomenal working relationship, and it really shows. That’s what puts her over the top for me; I think the Third and Jo have the best Doctor/companion relationship

SirJedi Sentinel I loved jo and never really saw her as stupid, she seemed less book smart and less classically educated than her predecessor, but she had plenty of eagerness, curiosity, a certain degree of cleverness, gumption and also a girl next door quality that is simply wonderful.

My head cannon is that the War Chief is The Master, he survived the end of the War Games and regenerated from Edward Brayshaw into Robert Delgado’s Master.
Then he found out that the Doctor was exiled on earth in the year 1970 (or 1969, or any when between 1970-1981), and traveled to earth for revenge for the Second Doctor’s ruining of his scheme from the War Games, essentially to finish the job from then.

I find it amusing that The Master Regenerations mostly look similar (black suit, slick black or greying black hair, and and a gotee.) At least until the 1996 movie.

08:51 - Granted in this story there are multiple demon’s while in that story there was just one, huge demon. Always good to know your details/specifics.

Thank you so much for explaining the color restoration. I was watching these for the first time earlier this month, and I thought there was something wrong with my tv and was trying to fix it. If gave up eventually and watched the washed out episodes. Then I thought my TV had fixed itself when the color balance came back. My family is going to laugh when I tell them what happened.

"Claws of Axos" was my very first Dr Who story!!! I saw it in 1978 or 1979 on WTTW channel 11 in Chicago. I was in 7th or 8th grade. They broadcast Doctor Who daily after school. I love watching Classic Who that way. It gives you cliffhangers but you don't have to wait a week.
I also love the Classic Who on film.
BTW my mnemonic for the Spanish word for "Thin" is this: The Master has a very slim chance of defeating the Doctor. Roger Delgado is the Master and "delgado" means thin.

Is it just me or is the Mind of Evil kind of like a DW version of A Clockwork Orange?

Seeing Roger Del Gado's Master....really makes me hate the New Who's Masters, except Derek Jacobi because he's Derek Jacobi and that awesome of an actor. Kinda wish Derek Jacobi got another chance to play the master..but I hear he's in a Big Finish audio

Also, as a total newbie with no clue and no interest in trying to add in books and comic books, I just assumed the Master was the War Chief and didn't even guess there would be some controversy. There has been nothing to say they aren't and plenty to suggest they are. Mainly they have the same goals, efforts and ways of interacting with the Doctor. When the weird time lord floats in the air to warn the Doctor about the Master it definitely has a he is back type of feel and the Doctor's struggling with half his memory. And different Doctors have such different personalities and different memories--every Doctor I have watched so far has some kind of memory problems, it is hardly surprising that Patrick Thoughton wasn't all like oh ho ho old friend and the charmer John Pertwee is more inclined to pal around. Pertwee has much more motivation to be friendly, his Tardis is restricted, getting on at least in part with the Master is a decent option for getting back to sea as it were. Thoughton didn't really need the War Chief at any point and so he wouldn't be focused on memories from the old days. Anyways, thank you for being on the side of common sense :)

HEY Hagan if the new series had the master plotting evil while running metal night clubs and being executive for a record label would that be better then the master during the ten error?
