It is a shame season 26 of Dr Who ended classic Dr Who, but it sadly happened the way it did. I also think that this series, was starting to get Dr Who back on its feet and back on track

this guide has been a life saver ive been curious about classic who for years and watched random stories with no real order and couldnt get much into it but thanks to your great descriptions and reviewing ive been able to find episodes i love and your suggestion of new viewers to start with ace and 7 is great im fully hooked and loved their stories as well as the second doctor adventures you have recommended

    Best story: Survival.
Worst story: Erm... er... Ghost Light, I guess.
    Must see: All of them.

I think just the sheer amount of missing puzzle pieces made me throw over Ghost Light in favour of Battlefield. Plus by now you really had an idea this this Doctor actually could stop a battle by raising his voice... sure, the Knights see him as Merlin, but damn do you buy that this Doctor is someone to never, ever piss off (unlike when Matt Smith tried it and needed a busload of friends for backup... like you said, McCoy would have had the Time War licked in an afternoon of Lexx-level loss of of planets, star systems and life). Oh, and Lethbridge-Stewart pulling a Macready on The Destroyer "I just do the best I can." Beautiful. You can tell it's probably my favorite, can't you?
Plus Ace demonstrating she's turning into a woman in much more obvious ways in Curse of Fenric and having gateway furry lesbian tendencies... Who was breaking mad barriers in the McCoy era. It really was a high note to go out on - and I'm old enough to have grown up with the show from Tom Baker's day (just about). He really was more than just a simple Time Lord, bless him.

A favourite? Rightly so. I can only agree with anyone saying S26 is arguably one of (if not THE) best seasons of Who, fullstop.

If Doctor Who never came back after this season, at least we got a damn good final season. But I am glad it did return eventually XD

I'm kinda bugged by how Ainley's Master started the tradition/bad habit of the Master being blatantly killed off only to return with no good explanation for it. He's still a Great Master mind you, I just wish they hadn't tried to kill him off so often, or at least hadn't made his apparent ends seem so final & inescapable, since now we can't even take the notion of the Master dying seriously, you KNOW he's always gonna come back (for better or worse depending on who's playing him, the New Who Masters haven't been all that great unfortunately). I prefer how Delgado's Master always slipped away before the Doctor could catch him, barring that one instance when they actually DID catch him, only for him to not only orchestrate his escape, but also enact a plan for global domination involving turtle people! That right there is going beyond the call of duty to the forces of magnificent bastardry >;3
Great reviews Diamanda, really informative and fun! Out of curiosity, who are your favorite Doctor Who vampires? I tend to favor the Great Vampires & their lineage/offshoots because of their awesome history with the Time Lords (wish the modern show would bring them back), but the Haemovores are really visually interesting (and way better than the CGI fish vamps from Vampires in Venice to me lol).

A fantastic final season, and I'm one of those who is glad that the series ended here. There's always the danger of lingering too long, outstaying one's welcome, seeing once fresh ideas turn stale. It's best to go out on top. The idea of breaking up the McCoy-Aldred duo in Season 27 just seems blasphemous, like splitting up Batman & Robin or Kirk & Spock. They had such great chemistry together and the Doctor-Ace relationship had real purpose, a real narrative drive and focus. Breaking that up just to introduce yet another round of interchangeable sidekicks would just wreck everything. See Also: Deep Purple Mk 3/4, Van Halen Mk 3, Audioslave.
My father was a big fan of Battlefield, mostly because he liked UNIT and the Brigadier but also because of the King Arthur setting, as well as the idea that Dr. Who was Merlin the Wizard. The monster looked terrific, the outdoor settings are great, there's a lot of great scenery and characters. And McCoy looks terrific with his new darker coat and overcoat. He's fully embraced his manipulative William Hartnell side.
The Curse of Fenric is another all-time classic, widely regarded as the best of the McCoy era. Be sure to see the extended DVD edition instead of the original broadcast serial, which adds several minutes and enhancements. This is a great instance of fusing multiple genres: World War 2, vampires, ancient Celtic deities and the chessmaster Doctor at his best. Aldred's Ace really gets to shine and grow and it's remarkable that it took this show a quarter century to realize that sidekicks could actually have character development. See, they can do more than ask Mr. Wizard stupid questions and scream at cheesy monsters!
Ghost Light works wonderfully for me because its density of plot and character, the very things that keep many viewers away. The plot is slightly obtuse and convoluted, but I enjoy it. I definitely love the stagebound setting, and we are reminded that the BBC can do a fantastic job with period dramas. I do wish there were more such episodes of this show instead of so many alien invasions and bases under siege. Again, we have the ongoing story threads of Ace's personal traumas and a father figure (Dr. Who) is simultaneously aims to help and manipulate her. He shows an abusive, controlling streak that could threaten to one day destroy their relationship. Which, to be honest, is probably how their relationship should have eventually ended. No going away to college.
Survival was one that I didn't get to see until the Eccleston Doctor Who was on the air, thanks to the Minneaplis PBS station being so inconsistent with playing old episodes. Once I was finally able to watch, I loved the hell out of it. Its tone is lighter than Fenric and Ghost Light and that's a very welcome thing. Rona Munro's script brings a very strong feminist perspective to this serial that is refreshing, welcome and very long overdue. There are a lot of subtexts that remind me of the classic film Cat People, and I wouldn't at all be surprised if it was an inspiration. I wish Munro and others like her had been writing Dr. Who episodes from the beginning. Also, kudos for finally allowing Anthony Ainley a chance to play The Master the way he wanted, just as McCoy had done for Dr. Who. See how easy it is? Just turn down the camp and stop shouting to the rafters! Stop treating this program like it's The Banana Splits! Amazing how nobody could figure this out.
The only reason the McCoy era was allowed to flourish is because the show was left for dead, and a new creative team was allowed to go into new directions. Again, the tone of Doctor Who moved from '80s glam and camp to '80s punk and alternative. It didn't always work perfectly, but they very largely succeeded in modernizing the program. That's one of the greatest secrets of Doctor Who: despite all the talk of constant change and evolution, the brutal truth is that this remained a 1960s monster serial for over two decades. By 1987, it was woefully out of date. McCoy, Aldred and Cartmel dragged this series kicking and screaming into the modern era and effectively set the stage for its comeback under Russel T. Davies and Steven Moffat. There's no way you get to New Who with Colin Baker, Peter Davison or even Tom Baker. They're too far back in the past, stuck in their own Sixties cultural time warp and Seventies nostalgia trip. No, if you want to make Doctor Who relevant in the new century, there's only one pathway, and it's through Sylvester McCoy.
End of rant. Can I have a grant now?

I do say that in Battlefield the last onscreen appearance of Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart , in the original script of Battlefield the Brigadier was to be killed off by the Destroyer but they chickened out of killing off a popular and iconic character that had been in the show for 21 years and they felt fandom would go ballistic if Lethbridge-Stewart was killed off .

    • @JamesTobiasStewart
      @JamesTobiasStewart 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Personally I'd find it interesting to see him playing the Hatter or a (seemingly) more Silver Age take on the Penguin. Show a seemingly goofy little man with a strange theme. Then you discover that the surface level silliness is so you don't notice what he has going on in the background until it's almost too late.
I mean if 7 lacked the conscience the Doctor generally has, he could have manipulated him way into ruling a pretty sizable chunk of the universe.

I always think the McCoy era novelisations are even better than the actual episodes. Stripped of the cheap-looking video photography/special effects/costumes and the cheap-sounding synth scores and also the occasionally lousy performances and augmented by additional scenes in classic Target fashion (before Terrance Dicks took over almost the entire range and knocked them out over a weekend), they really shone. Marc Platt”s Battlefield was excellent.
