  • This is the first Work in Progress gameplay video for my remaster of Truth and Reconciliation! There is still a lot of work to be done, the only playable section currently is the fight to the Gravity Lift. As some of you may have noticed I've switched the Campaign over to Halo 3: ODST's engine! The engine offers many improvements over 3 such as AI, support for Firefight (which will be coming to the mod soon!), no janky work arounds for Health Packs, VISR Mode, the TacMap and much more. I know not everyone is going to like VISR Mode but I personally find it so much more fitting for a super soldier like Masterchief instead of a flashlight.
    I've made some changes from the original such as the ODSTs, in the book "First Strike" it's said that ODSTs helped Chief coordinate an Assault on the Truth & Reconciliation so I replaced the first marines with ODSTs and gave them a below 50% chance to carry a Silenced SMG. This ensures that If you want to stick to the vanilla CE sandbox you'll have the option to not trade weapons with the ODSTs. All Marine reinforcements in the missions will be regular Marines only wielding an Assault Rifle.
    There are a few known issues with this build that I would like to adress:
    Some dialogue, most notably the intro cutscene and dialogue later in the misison fail to play sometimes in MCC (works fine in mod tools)
    Some scripts, most notably the marine reinforcements before entering the gravity lift fail to run in MCC (also works fine in mod tools)
    Dialogue and Music volumes are badly mixed and is way too loud.
    Some view models for Centered Crosshairs are way too high up
    Shade Turrets often flip over when a Grunt enters them
    Skybox clouds near the bottom are too bright, especially in VISR mode
    Sniper Rifle starting ammo is incorrect
    Players respawn with the starting loadout rather than a Assault Rifle and Plasma Pistol
    It's been really fun remastering this level and I can't wait to have this out later this year! This mission both graphically and technically is one I've put my all into and it really shows, this blows the initial version from May last year AND my ""remaster" of Keyes out of the water.

    Based on feedback I see that people's main issue is VISR mode, I will look into ways to let people customize what they carry so you can have a choice between VISR mode or flashlight. :)

      I feel like the original level was also far darker, which made the flashlights more useful

      @@ChasterProductions This video was recorded at a Gamma of 6 instead of the default 5, even then this is slightly darker than CE.

      @@Kashiiera You should try to see if you can get the level as dark as mombasa streets when you had visr off. Then, like in ODST when you have the visr on, it's brighter.
      also, it would be cool if you ported the halo 2a silenced SMG

    I really love the idea of adapting H3 ODST engine / gameplay into CE since it's has similar health and gameplay mechanic to CE. However the Elite's minimal AI behavior still apparent due to Halo 3's Blam engine reduced Elite AI in favor of Brutes.

      If i'm not wrong, H3 Blam engine and coding structure are be basically CE right? since Halo 3 Blam was built up from CE Blam
      But i'm really afraid that some of the codes for AI behavior has been updated a lot for H3 which makes re-implement codes from legacy CE Blam much more vigorous.

    I absolutely love what you've done with this mission, my only complaint is that it's a bit too bright. If it were darker the atmosphere would feel more impactful and there would be a reason to use the night vision/ VISR.

      This was played on a Gamma of 6 instead of the default 5, it's darker but I didn't want TH-cam to compress the video more than it already does lol

    Instantly subbed. You are doing the lord's work. And as for VISR mode, this was intended for Halo CE at one point anyway, iirc. Probably only scrapped due to time and tech constraints.

    That's cool mixing the ODSTs in there (because in the book there was ODSTs on the pillar of autumn) and the addition of the visor mode and silenced SMG is kinda cool too. Graphics are more what I was expecting Halo CEA to look like

      @@alvzcizzler Which is why I expect to see Fireteam Raven to appear in this mod including seeing the side battle in The Maw since that coincided with Master Chief’s mission to go and detonate the Pillar of Autumn.

      @@alvzcizzler No, they made it Canon with the book The Flood, a retelling of Halo CE with some additional details that came out years before 343 took over the franchise from Bungie

    Impressive work as always! Making the jump to ODST seems logical, especially with CEs health system. However, the one concern I have is the absence of the motion tracker. Will you be reimplementing that in a future build? I'm not sure how I feel about substituting it with ODSTs map system.
    EDIT: nevermind, read the other comments lol unfortunate but I guess sacrifices must be made. Besides, I can always pretend I'm playing with Fog on :P

    Really like that you're showing this off with co-op. I feel like most other modders don't really show off WIP co-op gameplay
    And safe to say, looking good so far. Real interested in seeing how you handle Captain Keyes later on in the level, given he was prone to blowing himself up with his Needler

    Good work! Speaking of ODSTs, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Fireteam Raven also being featured in this mod because they were also involved in the Battle of Installation 04 and most certainly, the level, The Maw would be having the side battle scene that Fireteam Raven were involved in. There exists the Scarab in the files of Halo 3 ODST.

      Motion tracker sadly isn't possible in ODST because Bungie stripped the code for it :(

      @@Kashiiera So it's not possible to re-engineer the motion tracker by copying the code and UI elements over from Halo 3 over to ODST and put them back where they ought to be? Seeing as they are basically the same game on the same engine, it sounds logical (At least to me) as to how this should work but I know nothing about this sort of thing.
      Still, this mod is looking very nice and I'm looking forward to trying it out once it's completed.

      @@Kernowparadise You risk breaking the new code that was written if you do that. This is an INSANELY rudimentary explanation, but basically since ODST had things stripped out and had new things added, if you then add older stuff (or anything at all, really) unless it’s properly debugged, it’s going to cause tons of issues.
      People smarter than me can give you a better explanation but the base answer is, coding does weird shit sometimes. It has to go through a whole vetting process to make sure it works (that’s where game testers come in) and deadlines are a thing, so it’s not as simple as “bring it back if it worked before”.

    This is a godsend, I love seeing progress on the Halo 3 CE remake. I can't wait to get my hands on this! I hope one day we will see the elite AI be more aggressive in nature, that's the only nitpick I have, but nothing I can be upset about with how awesome this looks. Keep up the amazing work! :D

    Awesome! When I suggested you check out SPV3's version of this level, VISR and ODSTs were exactly what I was talking about.
    Another nice touch was that they gave the Spirit dropships spotlights mounted on their swiveling gun, just like the phantoms in ODST. It looks like the spirits need some work to make their turrets functional, maybe a searchlight effect could be added to them around the same time?

    I think the switch to ODST is the next logical step for the mod, even if our poor little motion tracker gets sacrificed in the process. Any plans to make use of the tacmap, or will that just be for displaying mission information, if used at all? Because I know making use of that may or may not be a pain in the ass. And it might be fun to let co-op players be Marines/ODSTs, since the stamina system gives them natural shields anyways. I loved how Halo 3 set each additional partner as someone different

    This is amazing! Just a couple of points:
    Make it for the camouflage to instantly take action when you pick it up
    Put the golden hunter version of H3 ODST since they fire like the OG ones

      Sadly not possible since Bungie changed the way power ups work, activating on pickup is a Multiplayer only feature

    We're getting there, the Assault Rifle does handle properly now, but there is no possible outlook where it will replace Anniversary out of principle. Still doesn't hurt to have options, IMO this is better than entirety of HALO 3 itself

      4 Player Splitscreen CAMPAIGN Existed on CE since early XBOX days, there is now a public project for it, sorry to burst your bubble ;)

      @@lfesky Except it didn't. You have to mod it in. There are no spawn points set for player 3 and 4 and in general the game isn't set for more than 2 players eith its weapon and vehicle spawns on top of that. It's why CEA and Halo 2 anniversary don't have 4 player co-op either. The only way to get 4 player co-op is through modding which is a much harder thing to do on the original Xbox and last I checked wasn't even fully stable yet on that platform. .
      Also, being condescending for no reason doesn't make you look good.

    The remastered levels are superb but I feel like halo 3s neutered elite AI will make H3CE far too easy, the omission of the motion tracker is also a shame

    Looks amazing, but the only things I'm conflicted on is VISR mode for more than just the sniper scope, the gravity lift for the shift just being a ring and the effect isn't completely on the platform, all the H2A models for the different enemies, no motion tracker, and the Halo 3 ODST surpressed weapons

    The addition of Tac Map is really cool! Will the original motion tracker still be added later though?
    Losing one in favor of the other kinda hurts, especially going from a tool that you can view with your peripherals to make snap decisions vs one where you have to open an entirely new menu and lose all combat capability.
    Aside from that, I'm really glad you've made all of this possible

    The only thing ]I would complain is that the skybox is to bright, despite being illuminated, original mission had one of the prettiest night environments in halo

    Interesting....
    Motion tracker will be missed ngl but besides that, have you considered "nerfing" visr?
    I personally always though back in odst there was no reason to turn off visor when playing as the rookie as it allowed spoting the enemies way too easy (even the cloaked ones)
    I really liked what they did in SPV3 where visr needs to recharge so it can't be spammed, making you rethink when and how to apporach certain encounters,

    You know, the leaked Halo movie script had ODSTs instead of Marines boarding the Truth and Reconciliation as well. It would have had true stealth with them using silenced weapons and knives to take out as many covenant patrols as covertly as possible.
    So seeing this makes me happy.

    I couldn't get a good shot of Johnson from the video but I'm curious. Are you able to use his ODST model from H3 ODST firefight? That'd be a sweet touch to have him better blend in with the ODSTs in the level

    Hey Kiera are you going to keep the ability for the sniper rifle ammo count to temporarily be at 64 for ammo reserve? Because thats how it was in the original, especially on 2 player coop. Also are you going to go back to Keyes and port the mission from 3 to ODST now?

      It not being 64 is a bug. And yeah probably but not for the forseeable future, that mission will be staying on Halo 3 because I need to redo everything for it to work in ODST.

      @@Kashiiera So how are you going to develop the rest of the campaign now? Realistically we should play all the missions on one Halo game for a remake but if your saying your not going to re-develop Keyes again, it will have to be done in the future once again. I assume you want to take a break from that for now. But you will need to make your intentions clear on which missions all of your campaign remake is going to be on is all.

      Every mission will be on Halo 3: ODST, just not Keyes for the time being because moving it to ODST requires a complete rework of the AI and scripting which i'm not interested in doing, would much rather get other missions and Multiplayer maps done instead of doing Keyes again for the third time.

    I think the ODST engine is better for quality of life. The VISR is much more useful than the flashlight, the compass and map make navigating the more confusing levels much easier (I personally have enough experience not to get lost but not everyone does, 343 Guilty Spark and the second mission, Halo, are easy for most to get turned around in), and of course it's the same engine as Halo 3, with extra assets and improvements on top

    Do you plan to change the sound to the original or leave the H3 ones? The CE Elites and Grunts are so iconic

      For grunts they'll be mixed in with 3's grunts so there is variety and for Elites I'm not sure, I want them to speak English so maybe they'll be replaced by 2s Elite dialogue
