Be careful that you don't sound like a socialist, now. That's like saying that all children should have healthcare and tuition-free education, too. In all seriousness, the same people who pushed tooth and nail for abortion bans here in the states will never support any enhancements to existing support for the impoverished (who are waaaaaay more likely to have many children compared to the wealthy).

  • @buttercxpdraws8101

It is wonderful that you have been able to experience the joy a woman should feel when she has a child, and that your mum can enjoy being a grandma, and ‘spoiling’ her grandson the way I’m sure she wishes she could have spoiled her children. I believe your son will never want for anything, especially love, and that he is a light who illuminates the darkness in which you and your mum have both suffered.

@Dinesh Truth Its wonderful to be able to express your thoughts without fear of retribution isn’t it? Freedom of speech or expression is a luxury everybody doesn’t get to have in this world. Actually, there’s a little bit of democracy left here even tho half the population wants to throw it to the wayside for an authoritarian dictator, but that’s another story. Understanding human rights requires compassion & unfortunately many people lack that quality. Compassion is something that can be learned tho, practice it sometime it’s fun

I made a comment a couple months back asking for how women in North Korea endured pregnancy/birth. Your videos are so insightful and give us a glimpse of what life is like in a modern dictatorship.
My water broke at 33 weeks. I went to the hospital and was given such amazing treatment by both Drs and staff. The story of the women who gave birth next to your mother who’s water broke really rocked me to the core.

Unimaginable. I do know that many women in the world still don’t have access to modern medical care and many give birth to healthy babies because the village women make sure that pregnant mothers are fed well, pregnant women in many cultures get the most sacred foods with highest density nutrients, like meat, organ meats, certain fish.
but the malnourishment, the extreme poverty, the (compulsory) work that women have to perform in NK I can only imagine makes motherhood and pregnancy so dangerous for them. What a disaster. How extremely sad.

  • @skirtedfancy

So horrible 😭. I had such a difficult delivery with my son, I can’t imagine the agony some of these women endure. I have an unrelated question (and I’m pretty sure I know the answer). Is there any kind of legal system in NK? Do lawyers exist there? Do the people have any recourse if someone wrongs them?

There was a guy that was an expat in NK that did a video of groceries in the elite neighbourhood of the capital city on youtube . It is not the best like in US but they have access to everything maybe at the level of a middleclass person in China.

A lot of things we take for granted here in other countries, especially the United States. Healthcare, housing, food, hygienic products, and I remember you stating in another video and other North Korean defectors said too is warm water; especially warm running water in our houses. It’s just shocking but I know stuff like this happens in North Korea. Still hearing it and so much more is just shocking and the babies having to suffer along with the mother is just awful. Babies come into this world innocent, to see a mother fight to try to feed her little bundle of joy and hear about fathers begging for milk because the mother passed away is just heartbreaking. And we just look at it like it’s a normal everyday thing cause we are free.. for now. Keep spreading the word, Yeonmi! A lot of American’s need to have their eyes opened too, just to see how lucky they really are. 🙂 I have family in South Korea, so they/we know how lucky we really are, we listen to our elders pass on what really goes on in the North.

🌼Dear Yeomni. It is very easy for many people to assume that now you are away from NK that all is well with you. This, of course, cannot be true 😔 Only those who have been through trauma in childhood that continues through adolescence into adulthood; can possibly understand how these experiences have shaped and affected you as an adult woman. Your courage is astonishing; I shall ALWAYS have in my mind your face and the sound of your voice as you fought to prevent yourself from weeping, in your first speech at the UN. I could hear your heart breaking 💔 I wept myself. I just wanted to hold you and console the broken and traumatised young girl that you were as anyone with a heart would want to. Since that time, those years ago I have tried to bring attention to the plight of the North Korean people. Each time I do I STILL hear your little voice, on that stage; pleading for help for your people. That broken little voice will always be part of you, protected and hidden away inside of you. Now you have a STRONG and loud voice that speaks and protects the little girl inside. I send much love to that little girl and the young woman she's become. I continue to wish you courage and strength Yeomni for the phenomenal task you have set yourself. Each day, know that people DO care for the courageous downtrodden people in NK and the plight of every starving, innocent child you fight for; because many of us, too, have our young selves, safely hidden within 😔❤️🌼

This video was so shocking on so many levels. From back street back abortions, to no medication, no painkillers, not even formula milk. Such a simple thing but formula milk could save so many.
How can the regime ban abortion yet not even provide food for the mothers or formula milk for the babies? No point in trying to force women to breed a bigger population if most babies will die of starvation.
Even though I myself will never have children I'm grateful my family is all in the UK and my nephews had good childhoods.

Hi Yeonmi! Thank you for the content I love learning about North Korea, even if it makes me sad. But I’d like to bring something up, there’s a commenter here who is hearing impaired and wants to be able to enjoy your videos. But he can’t because you don’t have captions on. Can you look into that?

I think the captions automatically show up after the video has been online for a few hours (which means not quite yet).

Thank you for telling these stories. The world needs to hear it. It must be surreal for you to come from that to the way things are in the West. As a mother and grandmother, it hurts my soul to think of those mothers. No mother should have to choose between children like that. No mother should have to watch her baby starve because SHE'S starving. It's an abomination.

It's awkward to ask this over and over again, but the only way that hearing impaired people can understand your videos is for you to turn on automatic captions. Every time I ask for this I get a flood of nasty comments telling me to turn them on, but that's not possible until you turn them on. Thank you.

Using the Yt app, clicking the [CC] icon brings up an autogenerated message "No Captions available for this video".
