Yeah, because he's right! We're in the 21st century now. In my opinion, the Republican Commonwealth of England and monarchy protocols at this time are total nonsense!

Loads of people may mock at the monarchy but it doesn’t take away that the Queen was a remarkable woman who stood by a promise made more than 60 years ago to the people. She is a beloved person and many people are actually mourning for her. To disrespect her death is to disrespect the people and disrespecting his own self for being a disrespectful duck.

@@playnicechannel I agree with your "alleged" but it would have changed the joke too much. I think there's a 90% chance they stuck her with a needle of coke and morphine, as they did for her predecessors, (and is quite well known, nothing "alleged" about it) in order to get the timing right and "ease her suffering" as she was surely done for. Frankly nothing wrong with that except everyone should get the same dignity and free drugs, not just benevolent dictators. I expect in 5 or 10 years it will come out in the news to the shock of only the most naive. Okinawa is technically part of Japan but the native Okinawans suffered greatly through the years under Japanese's rule.

smart? yes, but he does struggles to get out of his bubble and line of thinking. funny? arguable, he tries far too hard and has got an Americanised sense of humour and . decent? well, he is a "left"-wing convicted "republican" for whom tradition and monarchy are "outdated" and thus need to be banned and replaced, HOWEVER for tens of million of British, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand people did loss a symbol of political and institution constancy, tradition and someone who was always indirectly present in their lives for 96 years. Young and old. Rich and poor. Upper or Lower class. Educated and uneducated. By the way, he misrepresented the class system. EVERY country has an undeclared class system. In fact, the USA is a far more unequal and elitist country than the UK is. The UK just kept the class system for mostly ceremonial purposes...

Ah, the two entertainers whose jokes got me through the pandemic 🥰 thank you both for being funny and pissed off at the same time without making me circle around back to depressed
That's why, among other things, I love John. He's one of the few people that doesn't revere to the British monarchy. I am tired of the media coverage of billionaire monarchs. Monarchy is anachronistic.
Correlation is not causation but it is noticeable that most of the countries regularly ranked highest for happiness, freedom, democracy etc are constitutional monarchies. Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands plus of course New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the UK. Having a figurehead head of state separate from politics may well result in a greater willingness to demand more from the politicians. In countries like the USA the President is revered and there is a tendency to view criticism of the POTUS and criticism of the country. In a constitutional monarchy we can freely criticise our political leaders without that worry. The USA has an elected President/head of state. The UK has a powerless King but has universal healthcare, gun control, the right to abortion, birth control, gay marriage etc. Given the choice I'm happy I live in the UK.
@@karlbassett8485 As you say, correlation does not equal causation, because I would assume the main cause of what you're describing is that nations with constitutional monarchies tend to be very old, and have generations of stealing other nation's wealth to create stability. That absolutely includes the US, which does not have healthcare etc., I certainly wish we did. But I think there are more pertinent differences between the US and the other nations you list than it not being a constitutional monarchy, such as the US's huge population and the population's diversity, financial and otherwise. It's hard to get the US to agree to much of anything, largely because of our culture's focus on individualism which I'm not a huge fan of, but I also think it's worth remembering how many people are in the US compared to those other countries. 331 million people cannot really compare to the other countries on your list.

Seriously such a treat when you two are together. It is simply “Seth / John hang out. Oh, there’s an audience”. Two great hosts who understand the power of people and engaging with their audience …. Hang on… Day drinking with John Oliver … … Make it so, pleeeeease
Johnny O is my favorite!! And I love the way Seth says “John Oliver” instead of how everyone else pronounces it “Jah Noliver”. Good on you both great gents!
The Mulaney thing was the line because everyone in the audience knows that John Mulaney has really gone downhill, it first became apparent on this show, and Seth is presumably good friends with him so it feels like an ooooh moment, but not because of the queen 😅
That didn't click to me at first but thanks for this; it's a shame practically everything leading to the rehab and out messed Mulaney up and I haven't been back to following him since. Seems likely American comedians' shelf lives are getting shorter and shorter.

John Oliver is hilarious, but as I have heard him say on more than one occasion, the other late night hosts have to hit the ground running on Mondays, coming up with multiple segments and interviews several days a week, and sometimes, they have to change something practically last minute. That does make a difference. I think it would be fun if John and Seth switched, with John doing one of the nights ACL is on and Seth doing one of John’s shows. Then, they could do a short meet up on one of Seth’s shows and spend some time laughing about the experience.
The best thing to happen to American Late Night shows is John Oliver. Why you ask? It's that humour from a British person is far more digestible when it comes to real news topics. There is a natural cynicism mixed with self-deprecation, and a necessary, albeit, blunt delivery from Brits that American humorists don't have. They don't need to be loved like American hosts. They will tell you the truth regardless. They can go from funny to serious on a penny (or dime) and not lose pace or attention with the audience. Love from Australia, John! 🇦🇺

Part of the sadness people in the UK are feeling is, in losing a public figure who has been there for so many years, a reminder that the current tory 'goverment' are stripping away basic things like a functioning health service or quality schools or "luxuries" like not having raw sewage pumped into rivers and onto beaches or the right to protest. Did any viewers of this show know that the tories recently changed the law so that (and I cannot stress this enough: this REALLY is true) they can strip you of citizenship and without you even being informed? Basic tenets of the basic decencies and standards of, what Brits used to feel was, a free democracy. So many things have been undone or weakened and attacked by these right-wing, corporation loving hoo-rahs. (And) the passing of Queen Liz 2 highlights how the UK is being undermined and things that were valued for much of her time and now under real threat. It's.......sad to see. 🤷♂️
So y’all are seeing the right wing take away what you thought was permanent, too? That’s how it is here. No longer just a difference of opinion. Our rights are being taken away and our Supreme Court is leading the charge thanks to Trump. I just didn’t really understand our countries had that In common. I’m so sorry.
That correlation seems so....off. Her death is what's undermining the UK? Not the wall to wall coverage letting the new prime minister off the hook to answer for current issues affecting people? Maybe it's a symbol of an end for ppl, but that doesnt make sense as an equal comparison. Also what was her staying alive going to do for democracy?
The Tories are indeed shredding the country and abusing the people but the royals are the epitome of the wealthy elite they serve and protect. No inheritance tax on a multi-billion pound estate? Don’t like a law but get to write in an exemption for Oneself? No marketable skills leads to poverty, homelessness, even death for ordinary Brits because welfare is wrong while the inbred and undergifted Family live on the people’s charity and the ill-gotten proceeds of colonialism? You’re defending the wrong people to make that argument. Edit: what has any of them done, since Thatcher on, to protect Their Subjects from these predators and ghouls?

I think there's a 90% chance they stuck her with a needle of coke and morphine, as they did for her predecessors, (and is quite well known, nothing "alleged" about it) in order to get the timing right and "ease her suffering" as she was surely done for. Frankly nothing wrong with that except everyone should get the same dignity and free drugs, not just benevolent dictators. I expect in 5 or 10 years it will come out in the news to the shock of only the most naive. Why is an OBE not desirable? From context clues, I’m assuming it’s because it somehow endorses the class system. But I thought this was largely ceremonial, like getting the Presidential Medal of Freedom here in the US. Now I’m wondering if being knighted has the same connotations as the OBE.
