All I expected was a fun, goofy film and that's exactly what I got. I think it is quite good. It's a guilty pleasure. Main reason I felt like watching it was because of Johnny Depp who is my favourite actor.
Another reason of it's failure at the box office is the fact that it was released at the same time as Despicable Me 2. Like, seriously, why do you release your movie the same time as the sequel to a popular film? Ask that to Alvin.
+Rob Bob Let's be honest there's other reasons Alvin is dying at the box-office besides Star Wars. And to be fair it did manage to sell out at least one show yesterday at the theater I work at (it being a pitifully small theater of about 101 seats but still).
+deathsdoor07 Ya but star wars is an all ages, all demographics film though. I'm sure lots of folks were dragging their kids to SW. Even a little little kid can enjoy space battles and light sabers and the main hero is a female in the new SW. It was just a really silly Idea to release it the same day lol Honestly it probably would have done just fine in January.
+supervideomaker9136 Me too, I try to see this movie not only as a western, but as a comicbook-western hybrid, and that makes me really enjoy this movie
I loved the film. Often find I like films most hate, and hate films most love. The musical score by Hans Zimmer was some of his best. And the fact they used real trains as well as CGI trains is cool. Also love that they went to real places to shoot this, instead of all being sound stages with green screen back drops.
I thought this film was pretty good. Probably not in my top 10, but its definitely a good family-ish film and worth a watch. I wasn't all that interested in watching the film due to the subject (never been a fan of the whole western genre) but i'm glad I did. Will probably watch again at some point. I think the biggest problem was that alot of people weren't familiar with the source material. It was *supposed* to be a little campy and have a 50's 'good guy always wins in a way no one could have anticipated' feel to it, almost like the adam west batman, but with cowboys.. I do agree that it was a *little* long although I'm not sure what exactly could be cut, which is unusual for a long film because none of it really felt like filler to me. I thought all the acting was pretty strong by everyone (again, considering the nature of the film they were making) and surprisingly I thought johnny depp did a really good job as tonto, both in look and in accent. I don't care what the movie critics say, I thought it was a good film and people should give it a chance.
+fux yews The sheer number of people who disagree with Doug in the comments on just about all his reviews makes me think that the majority of his fanbase have complete opposite tastes as NC does lol.
+fux yews Honestly, I think a lot of people hate it because it's the popular thing to do and that does a disservice to the movie and the effort that went into making it. I've noticed that the people who speak their hate for it the loudest haven't even seen it, and I don't understand how that works. How can you hate something so much when you know next to nothing about it? My opinion is that it's not a great movie but I don't regret seeing. Some of the action scenes were entertaining and I even bought the DVD just so I can see the ending train scene again because that was a lot of fun.

I swear people are so fking nit picky with what they want that HONESTLY they don't know what they truly want. It's annoying. This was probably the last movie i liked with Johnny Depp in it. The poor man just went & wasted himself. I'm too terrified of Pirates 5 knowing that Depp has been having a problem with his relationship & drinking....Don't get me started on Pirates 4. I really wish Verbinski was back. Q_Q
"...knowing that Depp has been having a problem with his relationship & drinking..." Boy, hasn't that aspect of his life blown up since you made that comment?
One of the most poorly paced, oddly edited, tonally imbalanced films I've ever seen. And yet, for some reason, I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed myself watching this film. And if anything, it's all worth it for that magnificent train scene at the end.
+ElTomo There is something weirdly hypnotic about this movie. Even as you realize how bad it is you can't stop watching. Maybe it will be one of those that develop a cult following many years from now and join the ranks of the so-bad-it's-oddly-good kind of films. I think it's worth watching just for the train scene alone. Honestly, I think a lot of people hate it because it's the popular thing to do and that does a disservice to the effort that went into making the movie.
This_is_a_Conundrum Maybe. I actually liked some of the more surreal parts of the movie, and that train scene (where the Lone Ranger *finally* starts to feel like a Lone Ranger movie) at the end really did make up for most of the movie's shortcomings. Yes it is unbearably long, and yes it is oddly paced, but I still enjoyed it for the most part.
The Smoking Skull I grew up watching the original Lone Ranger with my grandpa so Depp's Tanto made me cringe a lot, but I have to admit his take on the character did fit the style this movie was going for. I don't have any real regrets watching the movie though I do wish they had streamlined the story a bit better, gotten rid of some of the dross, and maybe took a less stereotypical route to the various character personalities and actions. Still, I was entertained and sometimes that's all anyone can ask for.
My issue with it was that it could not decide whether it wanted to be a serious cowboy movie (there are plenty of "neo-western" tropes there, and a really grim, underlying plot with the miners) or a funny action-movie. There are elements that run counter to the seriousness of the rest. So I liked the two thirds that wanted to be a serious western, and wanted the funny parts to be moved into a movie that didn't.
I've got to admit ... I liked this film. Is it an instant classic? No. Are some bits really weird, never explained or just pointless? Yes. But it's insanely quotable, has some entertaining action, both train scenes are amazing, actually not a half bad villain (not the cannibal, the other guy) and is a lot of fun. It has the same tongue in cheek lack of seriousness as the Marvel films, Pirates of the Caribbean or the Princess Bride and that's actually quite refreshing in a western, with the likes of the True Grit remake taking themselves far too seriously of late. Maybe I just have no taste in films, but I quite liked it and even trot the DVD out again on occasions.
When I was 6, I begged my father that I could watch it. He said it was too violent for me. I watched it yesterday night with him (being 14). I waited literally half, HALF of my lifetime to watch this movie and I absolutely loved every second of it.
Very unpopular opinion but....I actually kinda like this movie....I'm sorry but as soon as the Lone Ranger theme kicked on I was grinning like a little kid. I think this film could have worked if it was 90 minutes instead of 2 and a half hours, a lot of the unnecessary fluff was cut out so it was just the Lone Ranger and Tonto go after william fichtner's character.
"as soon as the Lone Ranger theme kicked on I was grinning like a little kid" Doesn't that happen in the last ten minutes of this 2 and half hour film? I don't hate Lone Ranger, but it is definitely a big problem that the movie takes long to become about what it is supposed to be.
I loved it. I never understood the hate. It's not amazing, but literally 80-90% of big budget films these days are exactly the same quality. So why the hate for this one specifically?
That's dumb. They chose Johnny Depp because he's Johnny Depp, not based on race. The film likely would not have been made without his name attached. Plus, isn't he at least part Native American? I dunno. I don't LIKE that Hollywood requires big names on films like these, which stops up and coming actors of all races from getting the parts, but they need money and names bring that money. Right now, there's not a lot of names that can sell a film, maybe 10-20? And 2/3 of the list happens to be white unfortunately.
Johnny Depp has some obscure bit of Native American heritage, but it's not like he grew up on a reservation or actually knows anything about Native American culture. If they'd made him The Lone Ranger and picked someone who grew up surrounded by Native American culture as Tonto, there probably wouldn't have been as much controversy about that. And they did hire people who did know Native American culture, gave them minor bits to do, and largely ignored their input. That's kind of weird, almost as if it was specifically intended to create racial controversy. I can understand Native Americans' frustration at seeing their culture depicted as some kind of exotic magic brought in to spice up a surreal action adventure, especially since it's about the millionth time it's happened and there are so few counter-examples of films showing Native American culture accurately and respectfully. It would be like if every white American in every Anime had a cowboy hat, a Brooklyn accent, and Goth makeup. It'd be funny about the first hundred times, then it would start to get really annoying.
But... that IS what every single anime does to American characters. And what Japanese cinema does to American actors and characters. 100%. And I just laugh it off. And honestly, most Native Americans don't get upset over this kind of thing. It's usually people getting offended FOR them, just like with most controversy nowadays... Media and people trying to be allies or whatever they call themselves now. It's just a fun movie. It was enjoyable. It didn't hurt anything or anyone honestly. If anything, I'd think people would get offended that the real-life man the Lone Ranger was based on was actually black, one of the few and first black lawmen, not to mention one of the best, but none of the stories mention that (until a recent time-travel series, very good). And the name Tanto means stupid or crazy in spanish. Those 2 issues are FAR more racially insensitive than any other bullshit in this film. But since it isn't mentioned by anyone, I'm guessing no one would be offended if the media didn't stir this up into something bigger than it should have been.
@@WadeTheWilsonTV I definitely agree the biggest race controversies people rarely bring up. Like, why not make the Lone Ranger black? Why not change Tonto's name to be something less offensive? But I do disagree on the anime "Japanese people make fun of Americans and I don't care thing." You don't care because your race has (probably) never really caused an issue for you. Native Americans kinda have gotten the short end of the stick since the beginning and STILL do because of their religion, stereotypes, and race. I think a better example is if a movie was made with a guy who was 1/200000th percent Jewish putting on a fake large nose and trying to steal your money. Then excused it by saying, "It's just a joke! Plus he's part Jewish so it's okay now!" Not only is the stereotype way overused and not funny anymore, it's also pretty insensitive given the history of the people you're representing.
I don't really like how Doug says "what your supposed to be" the movie isn't supposed to be anything it can be whatever the writers and directors want it to be.
I absolutely love this movie. The more I see it, more I love it. You see a movie for what it is not to always compare it with other stuff. Depp and Hammer are absolutely fantastic.
I saw this twice in the theatre and it was so much fun, I grew up watching the original show. If this had came out when I was younger this would have been my favorite movie but Mask of Zorro took that place. Personally this is was very nostalgic for me and I enjoyed it a lot.
It was fun at the best of times, but those times were few and far between. I also liked the surrealism of the film, but again, only at the few times it worked.
I like this film and can understand that it is too long at times. But I do enjoy it, especially for the entire ending battle. It’s really good. So I definitely would recommend people to watch it.
I loved this movie it felt like an old western with a modern touch to it. It also had some really funny parts that I enjoyed. I loved the horse jokes. Oh and the train scene at the end was great.
I love this film. It’s so underrated. The story, the landscape, the cinematography, the action, the music are great. And it’s also funny. Yes it’s quite extreme for some people like killing a tribe just for silver, or eating a ranger’s heart, but that actually true about the wild west. And that were the reasons Tonto and John Reid ride together for justice.
I saw this in theatres on a whim while waiting for another one. Honestly I enjoyed it, I was surprised at the absolute seething hatred it got when I heard others talk about it.
I think that this film is underrated. Who's seen the Legend of the Lone Ranger from the 80s? This takes multiple plot elements from that and improves upon them. It's just enough to be recognisable, but also has enough new in order to feel fresh.
I really enjoy this movie and that's only because of the train scene! It's worth watching it for the scenes where trains crash and I loved both the ones in the beginning and at the end.
I disagree on the villain thing. William Fichtner as Butch Cavendish (as well as the last ten minutes of the film) made the movie for me. A very memorable villain, even if this interpretation was different from "classic" Lone Ranger. They should have done more with him and had him stay as the "main" villain, rather than throw in the complicated plot with Cole as the "real" villain and the railroad (spoiler for an almost 4 year old movie).
If it did release before Pirates of the Caribbean, though, it would likely draw comparisons with Wild Wild West. That one was criticized for being far too goofy, and this one likely would have been as well.
I think Tonto's ghost was living in a wax statue in the museum. His body wasn't really there, and he made his was self come to life. I think that's what they were trying to convey.
Tonto was on display because that's literally the sort of thing that they sometimes did in the late 19th, early 20th centuries. Usually more in the form of live performances of "cowboys and indians" type shows, though.
Well, when it came out I loved it. Granted when I was like 9-12 I had a sort of Chester A Bum sort of mind set. Dad: "So, what did you think?" Me: "OH MY GOD!!! THAT WAS THE GREATEST MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!!!!!" And now even after 5 years of watching movie reviews and forming my own opinion I STILL love this movie. Well, like most people, the train scene with the Lone Ranger theme is what made me love this movie. Because any movie that can put a massive grin on my face just by playing a song, is WELL worth my time.
Tarantino said this about the movie: “The first forty-five minutes are excellent... the next forty-five minutes are a little soporific. It was a bad idea to split the bad guys in two groups; it takes hours to explain and nobody cares. Then comes the train scene-incredible! When I saw it, I kept thinking, ‘What, that’s the film that everybody says is crap? Seriously?’" I tend to agree.. I actually really liked this movie… the acting is silly and over the top, but the action sequences are amazing… the problem is that middle 3rd…
Even though this movie has got ALOT of hatred, imagine how much more hatred this movie COULD OF get IF this was known to be Johnny Depp's last movie to star in...What I mean by that is there was a scene where Johnny was riding a horse and the saddle on that horse was starting to slip off which also means that Johnny fall off his horse AND the horse's hooves JUST BARELY missed Johnny's head. So basically, if he got kicked in the head, he could've died.
This was the time where Disney was TOO confident to think this movie would succeed all because of Johnny Depp and a long movie length. He's a great actor but that doesn't mean the movie will be great and long movies will make people fall asleep in the theater. Long movies need good pacing to leave us wanting more from those huge minutes. This movie didn't do that.
I don’t care what anyone says I loved seeing this movie in theaters and am happy I own the Blu-ray of it. Plus that climax was spectacular to see and hear!! Also I really enjoy the Fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film On Stranger Tides! It was funny, had some cool action, a great climax, the Spainard was an awesome supporting character reminded my of Boba Fett not in the film a lot, but when he was there was so suave and cool!! To name a few of many things!!!!
Yeah I remember talking to my friends about this after its release, and you're right. They despised it. I would hear no end about how shit it was, and I'd even get into an argument when I responded "I think you're being a little too hard on it..." Guess this is a guilty pleasure of mine. Sure, it is just a Pirates of the Caribbean set in the wild west. But maybe I wanted to see that! Maybe I'm not yet tried of Johnny Depp's performance as Jack Sparrow. Maybe I kinda enjoy either being a little enthralled or at least laughing at the bizarre choices in this movie. It's not good, but I like it.
Never liked westerns, but I liked this for the visuals and the sheer bizarreness of it. I have also never seen the original Lone Ranger, so if that's what you're looking for, I'm going to guess that you'll probably hate it. Nostalgia rose coloured glasses and whatnot.
I don't know if I'll be able to watch this movie. I've seen the original Lone Ranger when I was a kid with my grandma. The main reason I don't want to watch it because they got Johnny Depp playing Tanto. Not saying he's a bad actor, but he just doesn't fit the part.
+nealiodealio I grew up watching the originals with my grandpa so I had my doubts too. I won't lie, Depp's Tanto made me cringe a lot, but he also fits the overall style of the movie itself. It's not the best or the worst movie. I have no real regrets seeing it and the final train scene was very entertaining.
it's actually a fairly entertaining movie in a lot of the parts (if you ignore some of the negatives). it's a guilty pleasure for A LOT of people lol. And everyone admits that the climax with the train is really fantastic, so maybe just give that a shot 👌

I saw this when I was 9 years old. And I enjoyed it. It kept me out of my parent's hair for a few hours. I liked the darkness and the cowboys and Indians. I was a little bit disturbed by the cannibalism parts, but other than that it kept me entertained. It was imbalanced and weird and terribly long, but it was visually and genuinely interesting. I would definitely call it a guilty pleasure movie for me now that Im older. Its not awful for a western. If you want a good western to watch, watch Django Unchained.
Dr.CookiesNeedLoveLikeEverthingDoes I didn't find anything bad about it, like I said it's one of my favorite movies and I clearly seemed surprised that people thought it was bad. So yeah, I personally didn't notice/find any flaws while watching.
Dr.CookiesNeedLoveLikeEverthingDoes That's rather rude of you to say. Just because I favor a critically poor movie and turn a blind eye to its flaws, doesn't mean that I do not look critically at each movie I watch. But anyways, have a good day or something.
Dr.CookiesNeedLoveLikeEverthingDoes It's shit like that I meant, you're just being unnecessarily argumentative. It was my mistake of course for even replying to you. But I'm sorry for not choosing to think critically of one fun movie that I watched with my friends. Have a good day, babe
I feel like I experienced more of what the Lone Ranger is suppose to be like with Disney Infinity When I got the game for Christmas my aunt also gave me a set of the Lone Ranger and Tanto characters for the game. It also came with place for the Lone Ranger world where got could travel to the old west and do side missions and stuff like that. Basically a game within a game. My sister and I had a blast with them. Just running around shooting bad guys, throwing tomahawks, riding horses, jumping on the train that circle the town endlessly, it was a blast. I feel like tho do. If the move had just been shorter, taken itself less seriously, gotten rid of the disgusting jokes and stuff like the heart eating, then it could have just been a fun adventure flick. But as is, it’s not that great or even good
To boldly flee had many characters with different stories occurring and like the other anniversary films, were split into multiple parts. You at least knew to keep it somewhat condensed despite being 3 and a half hours on the whole.
I don't know, somehow for some reason I'm very open to seeing Disney's Lone Ranger team-up with Disney's Zorro, even though that will never happen in a million years,
As a kid I was a big fan of the show and when I heard they were making a movie I was excited! But even as a kid that enjoyed the transformer sequels even after seeing it I was like “why did I watch that?”
This movie is one of my guilty pleasures pretty much for the stupid jokes like, When the lone ranger gets shot in the shoulder with an arrow and in a split second screams and falls down or when Him and Tonto are following a horse across the desert and it stops and flat out dies.
I actually loved this movie.
+LoneWolf same here :o

Plus he's part Jewish so it's okay now!"
Not only is the stereotype way overused and not funny anymore, it's also pretty insensitive given the history of the people you're representing.
I thought this movie was not thaaaaaaaaaaaaat bad
I agree
am I the only one that found this to be a perfectly acceptable film? was a good evening film when I had nothing else to see
Coming from someone who has never seen the original Lone Ranger, I liked this movie.
I don't really like how Doug says "what your supposed to be" the movie isn't supposed to be anything it can be whatever the writers and directors want it to be.
I actually just saw this movie for the first time and I really liked it.
I still don't understand why people don't like this film.
Because is is poorly paced, why everyone dosen't like this?
The comedy doesn't work.
@@bluedonkey9963 but I laugh at the jokes of this movie. For me The Comedy works
@@slytheringuy0529 this is just my opinion, but if the movie was darker and didn't have comedy, like the watchmen, then it would work
@@slytheringuy0529 but a movie like that would never happen as long as it's being made by Disney.
I went to the theater when I was about ten or eleven and I loved it, I still like to watch it now.
I love the lone ranger. I found it hilarious and I loved that it was long. I will watch it again and again for the rest of my life.
I absolutely love this movie. The more I see it, more I love it. You see a movie for what it is not to always compare it with other stuff. Depp and Hammer are absolutely fantastic.
"Pirates of the Old West"
I now really want to see what someone could do with that
I liked it. Actually, I liked it alot.
About a century ago, museums WOULD hire Indians to just stand around and answer questions. I thought it was a neat historical detail.
Wait, SERIOUSLY?
really
1:04 That's El Topo. Masterpiece.
all the scenes shown make this movie look really cool honestly
One of my favorite live action film from Disney... like top 3 easily.
I think it's a great movie and everyone I asked liked it too.
That train fight at the end was incredible.
Yes, Tonto should NOT be played by Johnny Depp, and it is kinda too long. But I think it's a pretty good flick, even with all it's flaws...
You can't have a movie without a few flaws
Exactly
My fiance and I really liked this movie. I don't know why people hate it so much.
I saw this twice in the theatre and it was so much fun, I grew up watching the original show. If this had came out when I was younger this would have been my favorite movie but Mask of Zorro took that place. Personally this is was very nostalgic for me and I enjoyed it a lot.
My grandpa who is a big fan of the original lone ranger actually liked it, so yeah
This movie is underappreciated at best.
It was fun at the best of times, but those times were few and far between. I also liked the surrealism of the film, but again, only at the few times it worked.
This movie was great bro! I have no clue why people say it's bad
I like this film and can understand that it is too long at times. But I do enjoy it, especially for the entire ending battle. It’s really good. So I definitely would recommend people to watch it.
The climatic action scene is amazing
I always feel guilty that I laugh at certain parts in this movie. But I always crack up at the arrow part!
I loved this movie it felt like an old western with a modern touch to it. It also had some really funny parts that I enjoyed. I loved the horse jokes. Oh and the train scene at the end was great.
I actually really LOVED this movie.....
When it got to the heart-eating scene, I was nearly spat out my drink and said, "Did they just turn Lone Ranger into PG-13 Ravenous?"
I remember really liking this
I love this film.
This movie is actually a masterpiece in action and visual storytelling.
The film had it's problems, but I honestly enjoyed it. Especially the part when the Lone Ranger holds up the bank
I saw this in theatres on a whim while waiting for another one. Honestly I enjoyed it, I was surprised at the absolute seething hatred it got when I heard others talk about it.
I love this movie, almost entirely because Depp makes me smile by just breathing.
I actually really liked it, glad I see others in the comments think the same.
it had some cool stunts and the jack sparrow way of nonchalantly ,handling dangerous, situations
I loved this movie
I think Tonto's ghost was living in a wax statue in the museum. His body wasn't really there, and he made his was self come to life. I think that's what they were trying to convey.
This is Doug Walker, everyone.
Movies that suck: Meh, they're not that bad
Movies that everyone loves: I don't like it/It's just okay
Tonto was on display because that's literally the sort of thing that they sometimes did in the late 19th, early 20th centuries. Usually more in the form of live performances of "cowboys and indians" type shows, though.
I've never seen it, but despite your review, the visuals this video shows make me want to watch this movie and love it.
I remember a lot of people were livid with Depp's character.
I honestly loved this movie
This was one of those movies you see trailers for and somehow just know it's going to bomb. John Carter was the same thing.
I actually enjoyed this movie quite a bit I love over-the-top movies like this, so it was a given.
I really liked this movie, the hate really confused me back then still don't get it.
It was the first Lone Ranger film in 32 years since 1981
Tarantino said this about the movie:
“The first forty-five minutes are excellent... the next forty-five minutes are a little soporific. It was a bad idea to split the bad guys in two groups; it takes hours to explain and nobody cares. Then comes the train scene-incredible! When I saw it, I kept thinking, ‘What, that’s the film that everybody says is crap? Seriously?’"
I tend to agree..
So basically, if he got kicked in the head, he could've died.
why do I keep rewatching this review
I would hear no end about how shit it was, and I'd even get into an argument when I responded "I think you're being a little too hard on it..."
Guess this is a guilty pleasure of mine.
Short review: watch Rango instead
I really liked this!
The prop trains have scattered across the country at this point
The train scene was pretty cool
I actually liked this movie.
Especially when you've seen films like Garbage Pail Kids, Son of the Mask, Fan4stic, and Biodome.
Never liked westerns, but I liked this for the visuals and the sheer bizarreness of it. I have also never seen the original Lone Ranger, so if that's what you're looking for, I'm going to guess that you'll probably hate it. Nostalgia rose coloured glasses and whatnot.
I loved the film
The longer a movie is, the more likely it is to get an Oscar.
I'm kinda surprised. I thought we'd at least get a positive comment on the triumphant playing of the theme as our hero becomes the hero of legend.
the saving grace of the film is the climax on the train, you show it a lot in your review, but you never talk about it.
I don't know if I'll be able to watch this movie. I've seen the original Lone Ranger when I was a kid with my grandma. The main reason I don't want to watch it because they got Johnny Depp playing Tanto. Not saying he's a bad actor, but he just doesn't fit the part.
+nealiodealio
He did a pretty good job, imo
+nealiodealio You should probably give it a shot, definitely worth seeing at least once.
I'm so glad I didn't see this movie
+MegaSoulhero Same Here.
it's actually a fairly entertaining movie in a lot of the parts (if you ignore some of the negatives). it's a guilty pleasure for A LOT of people lol.

Aww I didn't know it got such hate! This is one of my all time favorite movies! That's too bad, I'm happy I got to see it, it was a lot of fun for me
Dr.CookiesNeedLoveLikeEverthingDoes Or I just personally love this movie and find it funny.
I feel like I experienced more of what the Lone Ranger is suppose to be like with Disney Infinity
When I got the game for Christmas my aunt also gave me a set of the Lone Ranger and Tanto characters for the game.
But as is, it’s not that great or even good
I love this movie because it involves trains and gun fights and gun fights on train chases and crash
To boldly flee had many characters with different stories occurring and like the other anniversary films, were split into multiple parts. You at least knew to keep it somewhat condensed despite being 3 and a half hours on the whole.
5:18 Oh look it's live action Watership Down!
Except that last train scene, everyone has to check that out
I have to say that it is a good looking Movie.
This movie is one of my guilty pleasures pretty much for the stupid jokes like, When the lone ranger gets shot in the shoulder with an arrow and in a split second screams and falls down or when Him and Tonto are following a horse across the desert and it stops and flat out dies.
