How to Build a Cabinet for Organizer Box Storage Containers with Additive Woodworking Cabinetmaking

  • Parts organizer boxes are great storage solutions, and it's a best to store them in a cabinet so you can access each one easily without having to unstack several to get to the one you're looking for. This cabinet is designed using "additive" woodworking techniques instead of cutting dados for the organizer box supports with a table saw or a router.
    This cabinet is designed with support strips to hold each storage container separately. It's slightly wider than the HDX and Someline organizer boxes I'm using. The cabinet has 2 sides made of 1/2 inch plywood and a top and bottom made of 3/4 inch plywood. The sides will get another 1/4 inch piece of plywood attached to it so the cabinet edges are the same width all around. To understand how to build cabinet boxes, watch our previous video in this series • Video
    With the sides, back, top, bottom, and nailer strips cut, the next step is to make the spacers between the organizer box support strips and the support strips. I cut the support strips on an angle on the front.
    Attaching the the supports and spacers to the cabinet sides can be tricky as all the parts will have glue on them. To make it easier, I use CA glue and an activator spray to instantly glue the front edge (it takes 5-10 seconds). That way it's held in place while the rest of the parts are drying from the PVA glue (aka carpenter's glue).
    After the sides are glued up, I drive in screws from the cabinet side, into the support strips for added strength. These storage box containers can get heavy with metal fasteners, so strength is important.
    I then add iron-on veneer edging the Cabinet Sides to conceal the face of the plywood edge.
    The rest of the cabinet goes together like a traditional cabinet. Screw the top and bottom to one side. Slide in the back. Screw on the second cabinet side, and then install the nailers on the back.
    As a finishing touch, I also add a sheet of maple veneer to the side of the cabinet that will be visible. I use contact cement to make a strong and permanent bond.

    Thank you so much for this video. I need to make a storage cabinet for craft cases and although the measurements are not the same this tutorial is a huge help! I don't feel so overwhelmed about it now.

    Your cabinets are nice. I made my parts cabinet out of solid pine. Jointed and edge glued, used dove tails for the carcass. I used a small amount of glue only to secure it together, no screws.

    Thank you, I love these projects where you don’t need all the fancy tools but still get a great functional result.

    My advice is: if you make the case big enough for additional boxes in the future... buy the boxes now as they may be "new and improved" and no longer fit your case in the future. 💖🌞🌵😷

      That's a good point. I tried to purchase a second SOMELINE case last week but they're currently not available... I hope they become available again as I really like it!

    Might be a bit too fancy for my shop but some great tips. BTW, those "too short" nailers would never show.

    Nice work! Question: Why use nailers instead of a french cleat system? Not just on this cabinet, but all of them?

    • @HomeImprovementWoodworking
      @HomeImprovementWoodworking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! While a French cleat is a neat idea, in practice, I find it adds more work for the installation process. With nailers, I just hold the cabinet in place and drive in the screw. That's my preference. Scott

    Hello from New Brunswick. I was wondering what you think of water based contact cement.

    • @HomeImprovementWoodworking
      @HomeImprovementWoodworking  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer water-based contact cement, but it's not something you can use one every material. This veneer will swell and cause issues with water-based contact cement. I hope that answers your question. Scott

    Why did you leave the lids on? It adds three steps to retrieve a part (2 catches and a lid) and another 3 to put the tray away. Six movements extra. They also take height. And they serve no purpose. Would you have a drawer with a lid?

    • @HomeImprovementWoodworking
      @HomeImprovementWoodworking  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The kids are important. They no only make the cases mobile for work outside the workshop, the also prevent spilling. Could you imagine the mess if one of these tipped over? I like the function of the lids. Scott

      @@HomeImprovementWoodworking If you are going to leave the lids on, you do not need to store them horizontally. Stored vertically takes less space and you do not need the supports.
