One small improvement: colored labels. Gives a nice visual separation for different parts and and easy way to know if something is back in the wrong place. Other than that insanely jealous.

I started sorting my haberdashery in boxes with coloured lids and five sizes 😎😍
Perhaps add a piece of wood to the bottom exposed portion of frame to keep dropped parts from falling/rolling underneath

and one of the item glued to that label. Good for small parts, especially in bad lighting, screws and nuts positioned so you can quickly test sizes.

I love how at around 13 minutes the video was like a nature documentary.. the cameraman can see how the subject "struggles" but doesn't intervene XD
as a guy who has worked in shops and warehouses and seeing people do this, it is just better to stay out of the way. simply because the person moving said object has a plan on how they wanna do it and no matter how they explain it to you , you can never fully do exactly what they want
As a joiner, I can agree. I wouldn't want anyone to grab a hold of anything unless I specifically asked them to. The camera movement just looked like the guy behind it wanted to help.
Also the cameraman would have to put down that expensive camera rig to be able to help.

Your sorting is exactly how we have our bins where I work in Aviation. A couple pointers I would add:
1) we have mounted an example item on the front edge of where you have the plywood strip. This signifies what’s in the compartment for easy identification, especially items not at eye height, empty boxes for restocking, or if you remove the compartment for the workbench and then return it. This helps a lot when searching for a piece of hardware that visual is a better fit to a problem. Also this helps a lot where you have a bunch of miscellaneous items, say a compartment of roll pins, beside a compartment of hitch pins.
2) often helpful to place the label from the packaging to the back wall of the compartment for proper identification when re ordering stock.
3) the tilt you gave the compartments will be a headache when rolling the stand over any transitions. The hardware will vibrate out the front. A slight tilt in the other direction (aft down) would keep all hardware in compartments and also allows more to fit in the bins. Tilted down in the front is great on a bench or wall, but in motion no so much.

would even help to have the NSN on the label so even if the manufacturer changes you'll still be able to get the exact same spec item.

ecoheliguy I used to set up the blue steel 40-hole bolt bins. We would have set it up a little differently.
We would have gone to “eye level minus 1 row” and put the nuts and washers. Fender washers would go in a drawer to give you 4 more spots.
Then below the nuts and washers, start with the shortest bolts and go longer until you are out of room.
Then start back from the top down to the nuts with the longest few (least used) sizes.
That might not be best for Adam’s situation, but it was our default when space was at a premium.
Wonder if he could just spin it around and load things in from the back? ie take all the bins out and flip them 180 degrees that way the opening is higher than the back end

52 years and still a great role model to many, and still bringing smiles along even after mythbusters ended. A true legend.
When I see his shop I’m not envious of the tools. I’m envious that he always has whatever it is he needs and never makes three trips to the store.
I want a staff person to help me in my workshop. Thats what I'm envious about.

@@fionafiona1146 yeah, shouldn't be breathing in that metal dust from grinding, the arc burn from welding, the hearing loss from bandsawing, drilling, and grinding. Even some basic sound reducing ear plugs that drop the ambient noise by 10-15 do would help.

These "shop infrastructure" builds are my favorite! There's something about these videos that are so satisfying, just making a shop even easier to use.
I agree. This is the same reason why I have probably watched every DIY workbench build video on youtube. I get more ideas for improving my own!
Me too. I don't even have a shop yet, but it's in the medium-term plan and I've got a list of things to build that will help it be organized.

@@Crazee108 because when they wear down (which will happen) he will be forced to cut them off without damaging the rest of the structure, instead of just screwing the old ones off and new ones on.
Replacement isn’t as bad as y’all are implying. If tacked on extra well (without a full bead), they are easily ground off. They won’t come loose and it’s a lot easier and cheaper. I came here to see a rack get built, not to hear a bunch of safety Sally’s and armchair fabricators. Go to your shop and build something.
How much rolling you think he’s going to be doing in that little shop? 100 foot a year?

I'd love to see a "Time on tools" clock total at the end of all the one day build videos. Sometimes it's really hard to tell whether it's 3 hours spread out across a weekend due to drying etc. or if it's an 8 hour build in one day with everything beautifully knurled and assembly line assembled.

I would of put the heaviest/least used on the bottom, and my most used at eye level. It is cool that he can just move them where ever.
@@arayapokey I can see why you wouldn't do this after thinking about the exact same comment. If you put your most used size in the middle of a vertical stack you wind up without a meaningful order for the remainder. Going with the system Adam finishes with is probably the better of all the options for his case without redesigning the wheel.
He won't be moving the shelf (generally speaking). But it does have wheels just in case.
I was thinking it being heavier up top makes it top heavy. But it's not like he's wheeling around sharp corners at 20 kilometres an hour.
You want them at the top. It's easy to keep and use a small step ladder. It becomes harder and harder to bend down as you get older. It will also be easier to read the labels at the top.
Séan Brown Yeah and also having a lower center of gravity will prevent tip overs. These should be as low as possible
When I worked at Caterpillar, I learned that they had done the research and found that split washers didn't do any good, and actually made some joints loosen QUICKER than with no washer. They had purged them from their parts catalogs. Save your space and money, and don't use them, unless you're working on a restoration or duplication of a machine that had them originally.

They have a place, but they certainly don't do what they claim. (If you don't what it to come loose, nord-lock)
I’m personally convinced that someone made a bad batch of washers, and rather than losing their job, they simply claimed that they invented something new!
Worked as a Mechanic...hated split washers. Id make it a point to toss these and are replace them with a lock or just a flat if i came across something i was working on.
And even if you are restoring, rebuilding or duplicating, you should avoid the split washers if you can. 90% of the time they wouldn't be visible anyway

Watching this makes me appreciate my local hardware store even more. What a concept. Nice chaps helping you find just the right hardware. Decent lunch spots along the way. A good excuse to venture out from the man cave for that rare breath of fresh air and a bit of sunshine.
Living next to a hardware store would be awesomE. One of the maker spaces had an interior door to Lowe's which stocked acrylic for the laser cutter and special ply for the cnc. It was like pay as you use!

I absolutely love having a decent inventory of hardware on hand in my shop. At this point when I need something I don't have I generally buy a bulk supply of it so I know I'll have plenty of it in the future when I need it. It's so satisfying when I need a fastener for a project to just go to the appropriate bin and grab it.

That's Savage.
My grandfather used to weld everything which caused plenty of problems on the farm. We had two hay wagons with all the wheels welded on, which was a pain in the ass when the tires needed to be replaced after 20 years of mostly sitting in the grass.

@@thinfourth If you ever need to replace them (or remove them to reuse them on something else), it's definitely harder if they're welded on... even if you have a plasma cutter. The fact that I can mount/unmount the casters with the same 2 hand tools (and that they are tools that most people are likely to have) is much easier than permanently connecting them and then trying to cut them apart and retain usability. For a relevant example, what if 6 casters wound up being not quite enough and Adam decided that 8 was the right number? If he figured that out after bolting them on he'd just need to drill some new holes, but after welding he'd have to cut them off and then grind them down to be level enough to use again...
That said, casters really are one of those things that generally live on the item forever after you put them on, so it's certainly not outrageous to weld them on.
Is he not also welding Zinc/Galvanized steel too? Talk about noxious especially in a small space with no ventilation. I love Adam, but I worry he's going to poison himself one of these days.

Only Adam Savage could take an organization system that is already more ingenious than anything I'd ever come up with and scrap the whole thing to make something even better.
I love watching workshop organization. I've got a rather small and cramped shop, so seeing how people organize their work spaces is as therapeutic, as it is something that you might take away and apply to your own. Thanks Adam.
Cool rig! Thougt it was funny that during a project of replacing 1 giant hardware fixture with another one, Adam still had to buy a box of screws for the project. And he whacked split-washers! Hooray!

@@MitchFromSyd The same reason the rest of the Maker community does. Why promote the brand if the don't help keep the lights on? Jimmy Diresta was the first one I noticed doing it. Back in the NYC shop, almost all of his tools were painted white with his logo on them. Somewhere he stated he won't take just the tools (props) there has to be a monetary exchange as well. now he has a big deal with DeWalt.
I think a nice little project would be to make a stack of sticky labels to place on products during filming. "Savage Cola" a sister company to Mythbusters branded items 😁

Watching a Maker work through a long time issue, experiencing the excitement and joy as everything coalesces into reality fills me with awe and a sort of pride for a fellow Maker. Plus a bonus of seeing someone with so much experience and raw talent not only ask someone else their opinion as a means of talking it out with himself but also humbly listening to and accepting their input is astounding.
I work in a manufacturing plant, and for our bolt bins we use Lista cabinets with Schaller corporation bin cups. Adam would absolutely love it. I’m slowly creating my own version in a snap on box I have. It makes retrieving exactly what you want so quick, and you can fit so much in a small footprint.

I like how metric is 10 based so it is very easy, but I love using imperial. I wouldn't mind if the US switched to metric (for the second time....) but I would still use imperial on my own time. Something about it just feels right, which probably comes with growing up with it.
Yeah that label-system alone is reason enough to switch to metric :D
Here in Canada, we're on Metric...but we still have Imperial fasteners! We also have the Metric ones, but they're surprisingly hard to get.

I've been welding for years, and one tip I've found out is that if your casters on one end of the rack is fixed then it tends to be easier to move around. However I know since your dealing with space why you would want them like you do. But if you move it a long distance then its a little harder. Thanks for all the wonderful videos over the years.

Yeah... cutting the steel looked a bit sketchy to me. And the shop looked a bit messy to have sparks from the welding flying around.

It's not really any different. It's shaft diameter and thread pitch, followed by shaft length. Not every metric bolt has the same thread pitch.
And he isn't even marking thread pitch, so it's just diameter and length, along with head type. Metric shelves would look identical.

1/4 20 is so darn common, but years ago I started replacing all my hardware with metric and have not regretted it for a second. Now I just regret my leftover SAE hardware.

@@snaplash Was thinking the same, screw the uv-radiation burn. Welding galvanized stuff without grinding it off before can be seriously harmful. You don't want to breathe those fumes.

@@Jump2218 I noticed. My stepfather was a welder for 20 years taught me everything he knew, except how to weld aluminum because the supplies are too expensive.
He always said "Never weld something with moving parts. Moving parts break first, and if it is welded on it is too much work to replace."

the way he organized it at the end is really satisfying, search for the head type by column, and then size by row
the other thing that I love about the design, is that it's open at the back and uses transparent bins, so it's really well lit, so it'll be easy to see into the bins. it lets the light completely through.
Imagine winning as a prize a full week in this shop - with all these tools and materials - to make whatever you want. What a dream that would be

I was thinking about the mess when the Hayward fault is activated.
I think it would be wise to have wall hooks to secure the top, bottom and maybe middle area to a wall.
He even said that he's putting the heaviest bits at the TOP! The center of mass on this mobile platform, on a self admittedly soft floor.... Somewhere an OSHA employee is having nightmares on a daily basis because of stuff like this

@@themanissam1 it doesn't really matter. It's just a rule of life. You could be working in a warehouse, stocking shelves in a store, or just organizing your own workshop. You DO NOT put the heaviest objects (no matter what they are or the quantity) on the top shelf. Even if it's just a single 1 inch bolt. It's gonna hurt a lot more from 6 feet up than it would 6 inches from the floor if you drop one

I would always choose to bolt the casters on.
You never know if you might want to change the casters in the future.

@@ntw3394 I own a similar Omega Planet Ocean and the lume is super easy to charge this brightly, even with just a 10s blast of a phone LED. It does fade down quickly though unless given a good long exposure to sunlight/UV

Yeah, having accidentally received some pretty nasty UV burns from welding myself, my skin was crawling watching that. He goes through the trouble of putting on a jacket, but completely neglects gloves .
@@stevek5988 im sure he does know better. But he still isnt wearing ppe. Knowing the right way to do something and actually doing it that way are very different things. Adam himself confessed he is impatient and impatience can lead to unsafe work practices.
I wish my grandfather was alive to see this series about your workshop- he was a master stone mason, a master gunsmith, a master clock maker, and a pretty good wood carver. He would go HAM- watching this and rebuilding his shop, and taking your ideas and transposing them.
I had a flash back to my summers in high school watching the end of this video. My Dad was the bolt rep for the South East for an Auto parts company. I used to help him install, and sort new bolt cabinets.
It would be nice to list exactly how many hours spent on each one day build.

I had a double sided storage trolley just like yours. Was difficult to move around and rotate. Took the handles off it and fitted salvaged bicycle handlebars to it - made it so much easier to manoeuvre. Was like having a new trolley.
