      The good thing is now i can hopefully keep it running now i roughly know how it works, seems like alot of garden machinery use the honda engine or knockoffs like ours does, i've been looking at buying a rotivator and they often have the same style engine, so i'm more inclined to buy another non runner to save money.

    You can buy a ladder roof hook. You attach it to your ladder so it will be able to hook on to the ridge.
    Then set your scaffold up and put the ladder over the ridge. Climb from the scaffold onto the ladder, fit ridge caps, slide the ladder / move the scaffold over to the next bit and carry on.
    Roof is quite small to the ladder will be rather short :)
    PS I am not a roofer so this is not a professional advice. I am a DIYer and this is how I'd do it

    Fitting the ridge, use your scaffold or a ladder to get onto the ridge at the gable end. Then straddle the ridge with your legs. You’ll feel quite secure doing that. Then fit the ridge as per instructions.

    • @CampOutWest
      @CampOutWest  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      But how do you not wreck the roof ridge flashing if you sit on it? I (Jon) am no lightweight by any stretch 😂

      @@CampOutWest I'm not very light either and have done it 🙂 but if you stand on the roofing nails/screw heads, they provide a lot of grip. Also, if you are not feeling confident, you can get a safety harness and secure it so if the worst happens you have a bit of backup. Obviously, not good to do first thing in the morning or on rainy days, and totally understand you feeling hesitant on it, it doesn't feel natural but you do get used to it!

      @@CampOutWest if you put all your weight on a single foot or knee, you may well make a dent. But when you straddle the ridge (like a horse), think of all your weight spread down each leg either side….

    • @acidlumin
      @acidlumin 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      if you get/hire a roof ladder, it will hook over the ridge. the ladder will then spread your weight over the width of the roof.
      ideally i think there would be a counter batten running either side of the ridge to pick up the ends of your sheets, giving some support to them (allowing you to straddle the ridge while to work on it) and something to fix the ridge too. but as theres no batten to screw the ridge to, i think youll need to use stitching screws, just to attach the metal ridge to the sheets
      in short, use a roof ladder to get up to the ridge, and stitching screws to attach the ridge to the sheets 👍

    • @CampOutWest
      @CampOutWest  21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    I am not a builder with lots of equipment like a ridge ladder. So as I needed to access my ridge of my 1.5 storey property, I propped my ladder up on the gable end so I could climb onto the ridge in a seating position. I straddled the ridge and inches my way along it, you could do the same with your ridge panel edging backwards. As to working or being at heights, just don't look down straightway, look at the horizon. Become orientated and then it will not be an obstacle.

    When I lived in Austia, only part of any grass land was cut, the rest was left fallow. So you could just cut the bits you need, and access channels in the rest. You can leave it fallow and spread lots of wildflower seeds for the spring. It's great for the bees and other animals, and will look beautiful in spring and summer. Or if you get livestock, you can leave it fallow until late summer, then mow and use it for winter fodder (just be care about what wildflowers are sown or near it).

    • @CampOutWest
      @CampOutWest  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      Hi, big issue we have here that i want to remedy is the soft rushes, they are quite invasive on poor wet soil thats been left for a long time and the seeds can last up to 70 years in the soil. They out compete grasses and wold flower so i want to get rid of them so we can sow more wildflower and wild grasses. I've had a farmer here recently to chat and he said i need to start adding lime and gypsum to the ground once i've done a PH test as he says the soil is highly alkaline here which favours the soft rush, we need to get it closer to just above neutral PH which will give the other plants a chance to out compete the soft rushes the PH improvement along with the land drains we've done will hopefully improve the soil conditions for our trees aswell.

One thing to do before you use a rope or a laddler is make sure it is safe and you feel at easy when using it. You and Emilie are doing a very nice job in building your home and taking a few breaks to enjoy your new projects. Have fun and take Maggie with you when you can: she loves beign with you, too. The garden fruits are super and remember you have to walk before you can run. But all in all, you two must be very proud of what you two are accomplishing. Three or four alpacas will keep your grass in check too, though you will need to build a field shelter and buy in hay and a supplementary feed!
    Goats are OK, but they are ninja escape artists! Alpacas don't challenge boundaries and the fleece is a valuable commodity and - surprisingly - so is the pooh!
    Keep up the good work.

    Get a work position lanyard, use the rope you already are using and as you climb up you keep pulling the rope on the work position and you can’t go back or could you use a hen walk ladder?

    • @CampOutWest
      @CampOutWest  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The rope system i have has a work position mechanism on it, i find i can't really lean into it as where i clip it on is the side of the harness, i think a rock climbing harness where you attach it on the front to the carabiner might be a better option. I've ordered a roofing ladder adapter to add to one of my ladders that might help too, great suggestions.

    Been a subscriber for a while now and watched your videos you're both doing a great job on the property, Can i give you a tip, when you use your flail mower is not to use E10 petrol as it goes off quick and leaves a varnish in the carb and tank, use E5 as it lasts a little bit longer or purchase some 4 stroke Aspen fuel it has a long life on it and can be left in the machine without going off

    John, the ridge fitting is difficult, although technically not challenging. Ping your chalk line either side to guide placement because once you are up there it's really difficult to see if you are doing it correctly and you will inevitably nudge it, so a guide is important. You need to extend your tower,and gain access to the roof from the gable end,ideally stepping from the platform directly onto the ridge line. Straddle the ridge line in a hunched type stance and ensure you wear good comfy trainers. Align the ridge and fix as you go, but above all try and relax up there, you will feel better balanced when relaxed. Good luck and you will ache at the end of it. P.s. don't use a hooked ladder, it will scratch the roof and dent the corrugated on the point load areas

    • @CampOutWest
      @CampOutWest  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I think getting an extra section for the platform is a good idea, my uncle came up and said i need the guard rail on it higher, at least 1 meter above the platform on top. The idea of straddling the ridge cap scares the hell out of me 😂

    • @pauldixon4810
      @pauldixon4810 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @CampOutWest if its genuinely a serious issue for you getting on the ridge then you must engage a metal roof guy to do that bit for you. The nervous person will always have the inevitable accident, the wooden posture and reactivate movement is the danger. A few hundred quid is much cheaper than 6 months on crutches jon, it's not worth the risk. Fear of heights is dangerous at height
