I’d argue waiting even a bit longer to use it in 1v1, as you can drive the market down first, then use paper money. Using it early let’s your opponent potentially use the market when at 45. That way you use the market and get more than your opponent, then you use paper money and have another little surge of gold over your opponent.
I'm curious how the 256x mod changes things here, since it converts Paper Money from a middling one-shot ability to a food:gold resource engine at 8:3.
Grayscale Plaid, food is the only resource that cannot be collected fast in 256x games, because farms have no collection rate boni and fish traps (which have Gillnets in the expansions) cannot be queued, are even more vulnerable to ranged units and require water on the map. Having to renew them constantly is the main dealbreaker, IMO. So do not bother unless you are Malay (infinite fish traps). And as you cannot get food fast, you are better off without such conversion outside of really specific circumstances.
Only slightly valuable in forest nothing 256, being able to get literal tons of wood to sell at the market kinda undervalues it still. Food being slowest resource to collect doesn't make a good case for paper money 256. But what we all are forgetting is that paper money uses a castle! having it not produce trebs and rattan archers. this really hurts in 1v1's.
TheHaighus that was my thought. Malay having it's fishing boats boosted, then fishtraps, then providing food for Vietnamese ally. Of course a lot of gold has to be available in the beginning.
I was thinking along those lines too. Re-researchable with a longer research time than it currently has. Maybe also make it a bit cheaper but also lower the amount of gold the players get out of it. Having a vietnamese ally would give you some added +gold in the lategame without having to rely on the vulnerable trading carts. Maybe remove the cold cost of the tech altogether and have an inflation effect each time you research the tech until it's only barely more than you can get out of a market.
@@McToast1337 i think their lategame and team bonus (reveal enemy location at start, access to imp skirms, paper money) is good. For sure their biggest weakness is early game. They have no eco bonus, and the archer xtra Hp is not that great. Another interesting bonus i think could boost this civ: gets conscription at start game

Paper Money is priced wrongly. It should be based on the number of allies, and cost much less for 1v1. Maybe 400 food 100 gold in 1v1, and +100 food +50 gold for each ally in game.
I think it's ok being fixed since it's such a specialized civilization, it helps dilute slightly the pain of someone almost certainly taking your hard counter in bigger games.
One way this tech allows interesting strategies, is if you play team games like 4v4, and 3 allies sling the 4th player (vietnamese) to imperial age, who then gets Paper money which boosts everyone else to imp as well with a lot less gold being mined overall. It can either give each player extra military while advancing, or a greater eco compared to normal. Otherwise I guess it is quite situational with this tech

In Definitive Edition, the cost has been changed to 500 food and 300 wood to get 500 gold, making Paper Money much more useful regardless of whether you have allies.
I don't even play Age of Empires but as someone who enjoys strategy games in general, I find the mathematical/strategic analysis entertaining and interesting. Some of it does also apply to games that I do play, especially Age of Mythology.

There is also another reason you didn't mention why it is better to sell your food through the market than to research paper money. Because when you sell your food through the market it means that the amount of gold you get per 100 food lowers for you AND your opponent. Therefore your opponent can get less gold for their food when they want to sell their food and you still have the research paper money. This means that it could actually be more beneficial to use the market for a longer amount of time then the time that has been showed in this video. I'm not sure if this tactic is a buff or nerf for the research, i think it's a nerf.

But it's not as likely that someone in the imperial age would use gold to buy food and if he has to do that, that means that your economy is probably better balanced and you're more likely to win the game.

Something not mentioned in the video is the power spike this potentially offers. In late imp, its assumed that all players will be trading, but gifting you allies 500 gold right as they you hit imp in late castle/ early imp seems like where this would be the most powerful

Apparently the technology is based on the reforms of the emperor Ho Quy Ly. He began a bunch of economic reforms, one of which was the use of banknotes. However, "Series of Economic and Monetary Reforms" is a bad name for a tech. "Paper Money" sacrifices a bit of meaning to sound a lot catchier.
In 1396, Ho Quy Ly convinced Tran Emperor to issue paper money and withdraw all the coin money. Ho Quy Ly ordered to fuse coins into raw material like iron, copper and use those resources to make cannons. At that time, using or stockpiling coins was forbidden. So, Viet Nam is one of the earliest country that use only paper money.
Also, the government’s exchange rate is 12 paper “dong” for 10 coin “dong”, and if someone try to stockpile coin, that is death sentence, same as making counterfeit money. Using coin money also is exile sentence.
I think there are many situations in wich this tech could be useful, for example on teams game when your trade is being attacked. Or if you are playing a team game with a low population limit, in which case that ammount of gold could mean way more than in a 200 pop game.
Hey Spirit, just saw a weird thing in the game. If you put the speed at x8 (and only x8), castles seems to shoot far less accurately. Do you know why ? I just destroyed the castle in the first scenario of the cid with villagers and monks
I think the best use in a team game would be when you and your allies are running out of gold but you haven't been able to get your trade built up yet, so you use it to just keep your team going just a tiny bit longer while trade builds up

I Think it is a good tech. You just have to use it right. Only get it when the market price is low and wood and food are running out. Your teamates will benefit more but it allows your team to keep producing gold units when everyone is using trash.
All i know about aoe2 tactics: have 25 villager, five at build, five at gold, five at food, five at stone, five at wood, the makes 175 pop sized troops, build the empire so big that you have 5 town center, and make 50 villager for the jobs again, make troops again till the max 400 population. Attack the enemies, betray the allies, conquer the whole map, and to keep playing, lock an enemy villager in a wall

I keep thinking that having only HP without defensive bonuses makes the buildings almost the same or even less defensive. Or fighting infantry/cavalry (or any other unit) has any difference in attack speed calculations? Like get reduced 40% attack speed if you fight cavalry (doesn't apply to animation speed)

Maybe its not the topic but i wish they would add Timurids as a civ to the game too. They are the Empire that half turk half mongol and has the worlds strongest elephant army back in the day. Its may be posible to make them by a mod? Replace Mongols with Timurid Elephant unique unit (Aka Fast Elephant). It sounds crazy and used to hitrun and trample the enemies. ^^

anonymous person the decision would probably be to have one repair and the others attack. The one repairing villager will repair at 2x the rate of any other vils you add, so the others are going to be more useful killing the ram than repairing

Maybe its not the topic but i wish they would add Timurids as a civ to the game too. They are the Empire that half turk half mongol and has the worlds strongest elephant army back in the day. Its may be posible to make them by a mod? Replace Mongols with Timurid Elephant unique unit (Aka Fast Elephant). It sounds crazy and used to hitrun and trample the enemies. ^^

Factors to consider: health of castle, number of rams/villagers, whether you are Spanish...
anonymous person the decision would probably be to have one repair and the others attack. The one repairing villager will repair at 2x the rate of any other vils you add, so the others are going to be more useful killing the ram than repairing

Pretty late to this video tho, but what about under the circumstance that both teams have lost ALL of their trade and there's no gold to re boom the trade? Would then be better to have it as a safeline to trade again? with the vietnamese selling a little resources for everyone to get enough gold for 10 trade carts 🤔

Interesting tech, it would be a better tech to get if it costs less, but its effect is better with allies in the game.
