Someone finally said it! Bolt action 5.7x28 for the win. I’m dying for one. I want to see Ruger make one on their 77/22 action with an 18” or 20” barrel. I’d buy one as soon as it hits the market. They could make one with a walnut stock and blued steel and then another in a synthetic stock and stainless steel. Threaded from the factory, 6-8 round rotary magazine. It would be amazing.
@6point5x55 discarding the "armor defeating" pitch entirely it would make a remarkable ranch gun. Better performance than .22WMR and a fraction of the percussion of a .223.
I carried my Ruger P85 for decades. Been eyeing the FN pistol in this caliber since it arrived, but the expense just didn't seem worth it. THEN Ruger introduced the Ruger 57, and I jumped on it! Been EDC'ing it for four years now, zero complaints (ONE minor hiccup with ONE magazine, which was replaced free of charge), and NOW have this lovely 'LC Carbine' to accompany it! For me it does everything 'I' need an EDC pkg. to do, and it is wonderful seeing the price for ammo continuing to drop! Great video gentlemen! Thank you!
Love you guys and all you do. I especially appreciated Mark this episode, incessantly asking why, why, why to Jimmy's statements in the beginning. I feel like those ended up being missed opportunities for a lot of great discussion on both the 5.7 and the pistol's reasonings and best applications. Keep up the 30min 10min talks! ❤
I'm with you guys. I have always wanted one in a bolt gun. Something like a Howa mini. If Savage would make one in an action size of like the model 93.
I do keep a PS 90, in my go bag I take with me all the time. I also picked up a 5.7 ruger pistol a couple years ago. It's very finiky to reload, the polymer coated cases get stuck, in the dies. I've reloaded thousands of rounds, had maybe 2 cases get stuck in all other cals I've reloaded. With the 5.7, I've had around a dozen with about 2k reloaded. I think it's just the polymer coating on the case. Which was a design feature to keep the case inside the chamber just long enough for the pressure to drop. The cleaning of the cases is also a special process over just regular tumbling.
I like my FN Browning better, it's an "early" Hi power made at the FNH factory in Belgium that Browning had partnered with to make and sell product over there and the Germans captured it and put it in service for them and then my grandfather removed it from a Nazi officer that didn't need it anymore! Of course it didn't get fired for decades since it was hard to get 9mm in America prior to the late seventies!
Its odd how little info and review of Ruger LC charger are available on TH-cam. I think most people waiting for PSA 5.7 (MP7 at home) don't even realized that the charger version of Ruger LC exists.
Well, they did take a concept of the pdw and turn it into a rifle sized carbine, that totally makes the cartridge worthless. So unless you throw a bunch of money to take it down to a pdw size it's does nothing better then an ar at the same sizeish
Yeah. This is because people got caught up with the Ruger 57 and PSA rock 57. The Ruger 57 got released around same time. Its only been out for about 5 years or less u believe. The X5.7 is what we've been looking for
The carbine came before the Charger, with Ruger seeing value in a handy in-between cartridge. The cartridge “worth” would be less to someone parked in the “he hates everything “ lane of Life, and even less to someone who didn’t know that typical 5.56 velocity is less out of a 10” barrel than 5.7 out of 16”
I have the LC Carbine. No recoil, great accuracy, and really fun. It’s also compact when folded and fits in a bag easily. Some claim that the safety is confused with the mag release but I do not understand that. I’ve never had anything close to that situation happen. Sig Romeo red dot and magnifier and a Strike Industries hand stop.
30:13 This very much, with a couple modifications: (1) CZ shouldn't use their 600 platform as-is, instead they should scale the action down for PCC-only use (perhaps a downsized 600 Trail) no need for the added weight; and (2) reimplement the swappable bolt-face/barrel functionality on this PCC action (along with mag-well adapters) to allow hot-swapping to other pistol calibers (9mm, 45 acp, 10mm, 357 mag, etc). Though CZ couldn't get the barrel swaps to work with the full-power rifle cartridges safely, they did for their rimfires in the 457. Query whether a PCC version would be more like the latter than the former.
I love my M&P 5.7 Runs like a dream It is silly how far you can accurately hit targets repeatedly I think 5.7 is having a renaissance. It just makes SO MUCH SENSE in a handgun when it comes to recoil and shots on target. I REALLY want to see a copper hot load like a Black Dragon Fang on that bear skull you all tested! If a 9mm is viable for bear defense... would a hot monolithic copper projectile do the job? Consider the fact of just how many rounds you can put on target at a farther distance. I think it needs to be tested!
I ran into these three years ago when a local gun store got a PS90 to sell, I was interested but, very unknowing about the 5.7 so researched it a little and was interested but not enough to spend $1350 at the gun store five miles across s state line from so I went to an in state store and bought a Ruger57 and really liked the pistol and was very impressed with the round so I went back and got the PS90, it was rapidly gaining popularity and had jumped to $1475 and I hurried up and snagged it, the guy I was dealing with told me I came just in time as he was supposed to up it again to $1600!
I would like to see a cartridge comparison of the 17 HMR and the 5.7x28mm both fired from a rifle. It seems like the 5.7 could be a good small game and varmet round out to 125-150 yards. Add that a recoil sensitive shooter might gain interest shooting, and it is chambered in available pistols...please do this cartridge talk.
I have been wanting a 5.7x28 micro bolt action for several years. Something the size of the Savage rascal with a micro chassis that uses a folding stock. A 10" - 12" sbr model would be good too.
28:25 I am pretty sure the MP7 is chambered in 4.6x30. Sorry to correct you, good sir. I enjoy listening to your podcasts and #10MinuteTalks here on this platform
Thanks for another fun video guys! I love the idea of a 5.7 bolt gun too* with a caveat. Personally, I find the increasing trend of switchbarrel systems beyond ARs tremendous. Idea: A 5.7 bolt gun (or any action) with an additional 9mm barrel and requisite magazine adapter.
Might be worth looking into the Ruger LC Carbine. It has the 16 inch barrel with the full length handguard. I'm curious if there is any cross compatibility with the handguards or if it would be possible to chop down that handguard.
The hand guard ; Same fitment on the carbine but to cut it, the holes don’t line up. It will end up looking like a hack job. In fact, I think that one anti-gun gun magazine did a piece on making an MP7 out of the LC Carbine, and it looked like they cut it with a hatchet. The barrel; This barrel length is nom. 200fps slower than the LC Carbine. The velocity loss happens to be at a critical node of punched hole terminal ballistic transitioning to “wound channel” terminal ballistic. Reloading; presently getting 2,900 fps out a 16” barrel with Longshot and 35gr bullets. Going to turn my own solids because LeHigh doesn’t market XTreme Penetrator bullets in the caliber. Magazines; The grip is too short for a man anyway, the Tandemcross extensions afford good purchase and a few more rounds. On Earth and carpeted floor, they do not come apart when dropped loaded. I will not try to break one on a hard floor. Other; Tandemcross trigger is okay. Sig MCX stock is far better in every way than Ruger’s stock. The gun is a tad heavy but the added barrel length and cleanliness is so much better feeding through the grip, for this caliber there is no other way. S&W’s roller delay system is superior if they end up making a carbine. Blood does not easily come out of the grip (you must wash it) and the grip makes your hand raw when shooting a lot.
Addition possibility for longer handguard is to get the handguard for the LC Carbine and cut it down. I can't image they mount different. Biggest thing would be photo comparison of where the mlok slots fall and how that would align with a cut.
I like the idea of having a pistol in 5.7 because I can use the same bore tools as my AR. Been doing a lot of thinking on 5.7. I'm waiting for PSA to release the x5.7 before I buy either the lc charger or the x5.7.
I would be interested in seeing a 10 minute talk on the Hornady Superformance line. I hunt with a Rem 700 Classic from 1988 chambered in 35 Whelen. I believe it has a 22 inch barrel and I’m wondering if there is an advantage to shooting superformance ammo? Are they able to produce faster speeds by using slower burning powder that peaks longer compared to Nosler, Remington, and Barnes?
I got this same format with the collapsible brace 6 months ago----- It is the only 5.7 pistol that actually makes sense---as it gives you soft armor penetration out to 10 meters with FN correct ammo----anything in a shorter barrel acts like a 9 against armor
At 1 point in time, savage did make a model 25 in 5.7 by 28. Unfortunately, it's been discontinued. I think if they were made it it would kill the twenty two hornet
So much potential. A bolt varmint gun would be awesome. I think the only reason Savage Bolt gun in the past did not succeed, was the (at that time) cost and availability of ammunition. That is better and getting better. Manufacturers are you listening???
I understand the 5.7x28 for Jimmy’s situation where nuisance critters around a farm need killin’. I was going to (and still will) suggest the relatively new Ruger LC 45 as a good, general purpose PCC option, especially if you are thinking subsonic. 230 grain 45 ACP is subsonic almost by definition. If you are going subsonic, a .452” diameter that weighs 230 grains is “better” than any 9mm or 5.7 projectile moving the same speed. The ammo is relatively cheap and available everywhere. The handguard is long enough to give you room for your support hand forward of the charging handle. (An angled fore grip helps me be consistent with where my left hand goes.) Glock 21 mags also are cheap and ubiquitous. The 16” barrel does make it longer, but it also eliminates regulatory uncertainties. Plus .45 ACP can benefit from the longer barrel. Recoil for the LC 45 is noticeable and a bit odd. It’s not “hard” but the bolt needed for .45 ACP blowback operation (especially +P which the LC 45 can handle) really is a chunky monkey. The initial push back is followed by the clunk of the bolt returning to battery. I just got mine so am not used to shooting it; however, it takes me longer to get back on target compared to a very lightweight AR-15. Still, it’s a hoot to shoot.
Shooting with a folded stock: if a gun is marketed or used as a PDW then it has to do PDW things. One thing PDWs are good for is being deployed in a vehicle or quickly deployed from a bag. If deployed from a bag a concern is how quickly the gun can get into action, can you draw the gun as a reaction to a threat and fire it quickly or is there some assembly required. Inside a vehicle its nice to have the stock folded as it helps one manuver and carry one. If the gun can only fire with the stock deployed then it offers little benefit over a compact AR in that regard.
I wonder if someone could make a replacement charging handle that has almost like a cantilever to move the handle itself rearward or upward like a kagworks raised glock slide release.
That's not how those numbers work. When you see 5.7x28, 5.7mm is the caliber (diameter) of the bullet and 28mm is the effective length of the case. A 5.56x45 is actually smaller in caliber, but with a longer case: 45mm
It's called .22 TCM and it does work. In fact it works in 9mm if you make it slightly shorter (.22TCM9R). I wish that was more popular because it has better potential than 5.7 and can use 5.56 bolt heads in a rifle/PDW.
The ARMSCOR/RIA 22TCM would have been competion for the 5.7x28 if ARMSCOR/RIA had not kept the 22TCM proprietary... RIA made their own 1911 22TCM/9mm combo using the 9mm magazine for both, a Glock conversion kit which uses the 9mm magazine and RIA made a 22TCM bolt action rifle. ARMSCOR/RIA made an unwise business decision to keep it proprietary and not release the specs to SAAMI. The 5.7x28 is now gaining in availability and poularity! I would love to see more pistol and rifle offerings for 5.7x28!
I would like a 16" "preferably shorter FUatf" 5.7 bolt action! Why isn't there one out there?! 😂 I'm not a 5.7 fan boy but if I seen one in a bolt action I would buy one for an awesome critter gitter!
This is a level 3a armor defeater and thats about it, other wise its fun to shot, but in a pistol its not at its greatest in my personal opinion, its should be in a pcc configuration for its most usefulness. Diamond back seems to be the best so far, the twin piston aids in delay so the shoulder doesnt blow a 1/16 to an 1/8 inch forward so reloading is better, plus you can lose the coating and the diamond back still runs it just fine.
I won’t compare the 5.7x28 on paper to the 22 WMR and act like there aren’t differences in velocity exc, but functionally they fill a similar role: A marginal defensive round (but a big step up from a 22lr), and a fun low recoil ranch gun that gives you performance out to about 125-150 yards. The big advantage the 5.7 has is better centerfire reliability and better velocity from shorter barrels. Its varmint and small game performance for me has not been good though for me, at least with the common loads available. The 27gr green tip zips through rabbits and coyotes without doing anything, leaving me with a wounded animal that isn’t dead, and unless you are at a pretty close range with the 40gr blue ballistics tip that loses velocity so quickly that it doesn’t fragment or expand beyond around 75-100 yards, in my experience.
Ok 5.7 was not just a trend or Fad cartridge that died. I think the patent finally ran out on the 5.7 under FN. For decades the 5.7 was only available from FN as were guns, to my knowledge. It was always astronomically priced ammo, and guns were expensive as well imho. Now that its out in the wild, we have Ruger, Palmetto, S&W, FN, etc all making 5.7 and many ammo makers now making ammo. All in just a couple years! I researched 5.7 and 22TCM years ago and bought the 22TCM doublestack 1911 pistol because it is USA brass cased, a 223 Remington based case, same 40 grain bullet, and MUCH lower cost. It was 2000-2100 fps! (a bit faster than the 5.7) for pennies a round. Unfortunately RIA has held onto 22TCM just like FN did with 5.7 for 45 years, and they wont even get it SAMMI certified, so the only source for cases or ammo is Armsor. Yes, they make nice brass or nickel plated rounds and its cheap! However there wont be other gun makers or ammo suppliers. Both are great, but it just shows what poor business decisions have affected both of these similar rounds and kept them bottled up for decades until recently. This is why monopolies suck for consumers! BTW, RIA makes a couple different 22TCM Bolt guns! Also a United States patent application for the 5.7's projectile design used in the SS90 was filed by FN's Jean-Paul Denis and Marc Neuforge in 1989. U.S. Patent 5,012,743 ("High-Performance Projectile") was received in 1991. I believe that is the naughty projectile that we citizens are not allowed to have in the US (which is also ridiculous.)
My fellows be careful reloading that lil jewel, clean it by hand with mild soap so you dont knock the coating off, and lube the crap out of it when you size it, and 3 to 4 loads then throw it out. Powder specs are like 0.5 grain difference, not alot of room to play with.
I have a Ruger 57, which I love, but I can’t see the point of the LC. It’s basically a 57 with longer barrel and stock slapped on it. 5.7x28 is a great pistol cartridge in my opinion, but if you’re using a carbine or rifle you may as well just get something in 556. More powerful cartridge, more availability and much cheaper to shoot.
@ if having a 4lb carbine is the goal then I guess it fits the bill. I never thought the AR was a heavy platform, but I have seen a lot of guys get theirs to 4 and a half pounds.
@TheSfoil That, and the ammo is lighter too. Ounces are pounds, and pounds are pain, especially if you put it in the context of having to walk great distances. And with ammo that can reach 2,500+ FPS from a 10" barrel, it'll be more effective than your average handgun, while still having less recoil than something in 5.56. Granted, 5.56 will be more effective.
IMHO, we the American gun market are REALLY blowing it on this. The 5.7 is not enough to be a useful swiss army knife. The 10mm, 357 mag and the 30 carbine are MUCH closer to being truly useful. Perhaps the 30 supercarry, 7.62x25 and 7.5 fk brno would be a decent alternatives, but are either too rare or slightly inadequate. IMHO, an up-pressured 30 carbine with a shoulder and 6mm bullet would be GREAT. Or the 9x25 dillon. Or a sliggtly shortened 300 blk case with smaller bullets, maybe 7mm. A true PDW round that isnt just meant to pen 90s soft armor in 50 round mags with full auto... but a versatile semi auto round that shines in 6-10" bbls, and has real a$$ behind it, but the mag fits in the grip.
@@MattWaller04 I agree. But if I wanted a short and handy bolt action rifle that has no recoil and could be used for various small critters I’d either use a 223 or my 6.5 Grendel. The 5.7 in a bolt action wouldn’t do anything that I don’t already have a rifle for between 22mag, 223, and 6.5 Grendel

I would love to see a Howa Mini Action in one.
howa mini action seems like a good choice
Howa Mini or a CZ 527 in (bear with me) 5.7x28 necked down to .17. Either way now you have a modernized .17 Hornet
I can't be the only one to think that a compact, lightweight, accurate bolt rifle in 5.7x28 would make the ultimate
"Armor defeating" garden gun, sounds kewl ngl! ❤
@6point5x55 discarding the "armor defeating" pitch entirely it would make a remarkable ranch gun. Better performance than .22WMR and a fraction of the percussion of a .223.
Maybe, but its always going to be lighter and slower than a 223
@@galenpedersen4755 i like this idea! Bolt action or action suggestions? Short and handy.

So much potential. A bolt varmint gun would be awesome. I think the only reason Savage Bolt gun in the past did not succeed, was the (at that time) cost and availability of ammunition. That is better and getting better. Manufacturers are you listening???
5.7 needs a bolt action format & a compact/subcompact pistol
Pretty cool little blaster
Handguards 1 inch shorter than the barrel are king ❤😂
I wonder if someone could make a replacement charging handle that has almost like a cantilever to move the handle itself rearward or upward like a kagworks raised glock slide release.
Video request: Big bore Revolvers such 460s&w mag
hunting , scopes, 460s&w, practicality, possible truck gun might i say?
Mark you crack me up! 😂
I would love to see a 5.7 Ruger 10/22 for survival/truck/ATV/hiking gun
Kns precision has a extended hand stop that just snaps in front for 30 bucks made all the difference on mine
What are the current length requirements for braced pistols listed? I can't find anything recent about measuring one.
no
I got one of the ar57 uppers and it is thumpy, fun round to rip on minus one mag being 30 bucks...
That kns hand guard works well
How would the 5.7 compare to the 22 Hornet?
I would like to see a 556 necked down to 556x28 and to see how it works and what do y'all think of doing something like this ??????
That's not how those numbers work. When you see 5.7x28, 5.7mm is the caliber (diameter) of the bullet and 28mm is the effective length of the case. A 5.56x45 is actually smaller in caliber, but with a longer case: 45mm
@BjCmeadows I see just really learning this numbers and get them mixed up.
@@BjCmeadows 5.56x45 and 5.7x28 are both .224 projectiles
It's called .22 TCM and it does work. In fact it works in 9mm if you make it slightly shorter (.22TCM9R). I wish that was more popular because it has better potential than 5.7 and can use 5.56 bolt heads in a rifle/PDW.
Could Ruger build a 5.7 version of the 10/22M?
Doing get me wrong- I LOVE my 5.7 but, seems to me, like it’s the center fired big brother to the .17wsm rimfire. lol
How has everyone forgot about the 22 TCM?
Hand stop ? Or slant pistol grip sense it can't be 90° with out the AFT shooting your pouch
Jim is thinking of it as a handy anti-vermin gun and that is probably the most sensible role. (We can’t get the good ammo for defensive purposes.)
5.5 grains blue dot under 40 grain vmax yields almost factory velocities in my ps 90
Very cool Ruger! Why don’t manufacturers offer bolt-action rifles chambered in 5.7?
Savage did in their model 25 a few years ago.
Didn't Savage make a bolt gun in 5.7x28?
2:44
the "baby 5.56" is the 221 fireball.
Will you do a 45 colt review??
Bullpup bolt action PCC?
I've deliberating that same gun for the same purpose. Why did you chose the pistol over the carbine?
Probably the good ol' Nuttnfancy size and weight constraints
So Lead Ballon on .22 TCM?
I added a rail section on the bottom and a magpul AFG which gave me a better purchase.
Isn’t the recent growth in popularity of chamberings and ammunition production due to some patents by FN expiring?
Tell Ryan that there is a rem 7600 carbine 30-06 at little crow. I know hes mentioned that model on podcasts in the past.
5.7 is a cool round, but on the next 10 minute talk the best cartridge, the almighty 340 weatheby magnum
I think ruger hit a home run with the lc charger in 5.7x28 it's been said before its an American mp7
Does anyone know if the trigger is similar to the 10/22? As in the mechanism/sear that catches the bolt?
No, it's their 5.7 pistol frame
Who makes that brace?
Lc carbine in 30 carbine would be cool
I'm upset they didn't introduce us to the puppers wandering around the studio
"It's getting longer" 🤣 that's what she said
Giggity
My fellows be careful reloading that lil jewel, clean it by hand with mild soap so you dont knock the coating off, and lube the crap out of it when you size it, and 3 to 4 loads then throw it out. Powder specs are like 0.5 grain difference, not alot of room to play with.
Please do 6.5 grendel vs 6arc.....
I dunno, I have yet to see an AR that's 4 pounds, and as short as an LC charger. The Charger can also have 30 round mags as well.
Savage made a bolt gun in 5.7. They quit a few years ago
We need a cartridge talk for the 6.8x51 vs 277 fury, and what lead balloon would be perfect to get a hybrid metal case upgrade.
Probably shortened to prevent unlawful installment of a vertical hand grip as pistols cannot have one without being nfa registered
Thats not Rugers job.
there is an mlok slot on the bottom, vfg would bolt straight on.
What would be even cooler is if ruger would chamber the 77/357 bolt gun in 256 win mag. Twisted for the 75gr vmax
Think they call that paddle release sparky ..
I thought about a 5.7 bolt gun. It took me about 10 seconds before I said, "I already have a 6.5 Grendel"
5.7x28 and 6.5 Grendel are not even remotely similar though... I don't understand
@@Drakehilt okay I see what you're saying. Yeah it might fill a very small niche, but I agree.
HERES A COMPARISON - its a 9mm in a pcc that defeats some body armor
That is the singular reason for this to exist.
I’ve heard, haven’t tried, that this is a real hard cartridge to reload for. If that’s true it is a real hard sell to me.
Interesting. The fact that it is cheap to fire would be the only reason for me to own one.
That is a tiny bottlenecked case.
SBR it and then you can have the vertical grip.
Mount a black shoe horn to the underside of the rail. 😁
